He couldn't believe his luck. Gods, he couldn't believe it had actually been a real number.
Smiling, he looked down at the woman on his arm, a light blush coloring his cheeks beneath his fur. She was radiant, and beautiful, and he was taking her home. They had gone on a date. One of many, actually.
It had actually been a real number.

He'd been revelling in that fact for a few weeks now, after two weeks of hiding under paperwork at the precinct in horrid denial. He had been so sure that it was a fake number. It wasn't like he'd had a date in...well, as much as he hated to admit it, it had been a whole year since he'd even had coffee with someone that wasn't from work...
But now he was on a date.

'In your face, Samson.' He thought smugly. The man was always first to laugh at Theo's ineptitude with women. He'd been the loudest, in the beginning.

And, looking back, Theo supposed it was rather pathetic. His desk, right by the window, had a perfect view of the street. And, he had noticed, a perfect view of passers by. Particularily an Impling woman who worked down the street. He'd watched her, trying to muster up the courage to go out and speak with her. But how creepy was that? Just walking up to someone on the street. She couldn't have known he existed. Sure, gold fur was kind of flashy, and she may have seen it from the window, but he was still a stranger.
And, of course, his daily gazes were caught on to, by Samson; just his luck. The large man had laughed and weedled and teased until one day Theo did go outside, waiting for the woman to show up.

Figures, it had been the one day she hadn't. She'd been gone for a whole week, actually. Holidays, Samson had assured him, but Theo was so miserable at his failure that he hadn't even looked at her when she'd returned to her usual schedule.

So, he wallowed in his misery, enduring MORE teasing from Samson for being 'a weenie', as he put it, until he had been unable to bear it and took off down the street. There was a bakery, there; 'Sweet Swirls', or something like that. He was a regular. His sweet tooth was something to be reckoned with. Aislynn, the owner, had smiled and busied away to get some cinnamon buns, and looked absolutely mortified when she didn't have any left. Before he could tell her he'd just change his order, the scatterbrained woman had charged off to bake more.

So, he waited. Better to stay than to return to Samson.

He sat at one of the tables, aimlessly reading a magazine that was left there...and she had walked in. He'd nearly choked on his tongue.
She was here. Oh, gods, she was in the same room as him. Samsons' voice, depsite the fact that he wasn't even THERE (He'd suspected schizophrenia at first) had risen and needled and pushed until he'd stumbled from the table and struck up a conversation. Somehow, she hadn't turned away; somehow, he'd ended up walking with her as far as the precinct, leaving his cinnamon buns behind; and, somehow, he'd gotten her number.

Which was when the fearful simpering started. What if it was a fake number? It had happened before. He didn't think he was ugly, no. He was muscular, well groomed, and women usually came to him before he worked up the nerve to walk up to them. He just had luck when it came to ill-humored harpies.

It took two weeks- two weeks! -for him to call it. He'd been so excited when she'd picked up, that he shouted "It's real!!" before realizing what he'd done, and hanging up on her.
Mortified, he called back (on a different phone) and had pretended it never happened.

And they'd gone on a date. And another. And more, until this one.

AND HE WAS WALKING HER HOME.

Needless to say, Theo was positively giddy.

"This was fun," he smiled as they stopped at the door that was hers. "We should do it again sometime."

Before meeting him at the shop, Luna had only seen passing glances of Theo. Usually, it had been in a flash of blond fur in the precinct window, and that hadn't been near enough for her to see anything more of him. So, she'd gone on her usual route to work every day without thinking much about it.

Then they'd met at the bakery. Luna had been going to pick up some chocolate donuts for Shade (they were his favorite), as well as to speak to Aislynn about how her son was doing at work with her, when she'd been approached by the golden-furred impling. Upon first glance, she'd admitted that he was very attractive - handsome face, well-built, nicely groomed...she hadn't seen anyone like him in a while. They'd gotten to chatting, and she'd quickly found that he was quite pleasant to talk with.

He'd walked out of the shop with her and they'd parted ways at the precinct...though, not before Luna had given him her number. She'd then headed back to work, hoping that she'd eventually get a call from him.
For two weeks, she hadn't. For two weeks, she'd heard nothing from Theo and, for a while, she'd begun to wonder if he would call at all. Not that she'd had much time to dwell on it - she had to work, she had to look after her son and the Essentic that was becoming more and more like a daughter to her every day, as well as so many other things to juggle throughout her days.

Finally, he'd called her again, only to hear a cry of 'it's real' from the other end of the phone before she'd been hung up on. Theo had called back again later, but she'd still been left rather confused at first. That had quickly changed when he'd asked her out. She'd agreed, and they'd gone out on their first date.

That had been followed by another, and another...eventually, Luna found herself wondering if Theo was turning into the first boyfriend she'd had in years. The last man she'd been with had been Shade's father, and he wasn't exactly on her list of best men in the world. Theo though...Theo was the exact opposite of him.

Now, the only thing she had to worry about was introducing him to Shade. Hopefully, that wouldn't be too much of a problem.

"Definitely." She smiled up at him as they paused in front of her door. She turned to open her door and paused again before looking back to him. "Would you like to come in for a bit?"

Shade was meanwhile on the couch, Nyx on his lap as the two of them watched some little kid's show...Max and Ruby or something to that effect. The boy's ears twitched as he heard the sound of his mother's voice...as well as that of another's. A man? Quickly, Shade picked up the proto in his lap and hid her in the pocket of his hoodie, not wanting her to be seen by a stranger - that would be bad.

Carefully, the boy peeked up over the back of the couch and almost died of shock when he saw what was going on. His mother was talking to...to a GUY! And not just in a friendly way; he knew the looks that people got on their faces when they were dating someone, and both she and the guy both had that...lovey-dovey look.

His mother smiled at him as she came inside, quickly introducing the man to him. "Shade, this is Theo...Theo, this is my son, Shade."

"H...Hi..." The boy gave Theo a weak smile - good lord, they hadn't had a man in here - unless Shade counted - in...well, years! Needless to say, the boy was a little bit shocked, not to mention a little timid.

"I would love to. Thanks." He grinned as he was invited in, smothering a swoon. This was great. If he wasn't so sure Samson would tease him into oblivion, he'd have planned to tell him all about it later.
Still smiling, he followed her inside, looking at the boy she introduced as her son. He'd seen him before, in the bakery; and he assumed the boy would recognize him. He went in there often enough! His sweet tooth was infamous, and Aislynn often said he funded the business and bought her new stoves.

"Hey, Shade." He seemed...timid. Fearful. He hoped he wasn't an imposing presence or threatening, in any way, to the child. He loved children! He didn't want to scare them.
"Nice to meet you. Officially, anyways." He laughed a bit. "I've seen you before, in the shop. Recognize me? I recon I fund some of your paychecks." He winked, grinning at the boy. Looking past him, he took vague notice of the TV. Max and Ruby?
Samson's children, aged four and six respectively, watched it. Wasn't it a little kid show?
But, he shrugged it off. He still watched saturday morning cartoons. Everybody had their oddities. Maybe he liked to watch toddler TV, or something. Who was he to judge?

It took Shade a moment to place the man's face, but he quickly realized who he was - it was true, the boy had often seen him come into the bakery, though he'd said much to him. At the shop, it had always been a worker-customer relationship. It was strange, how his mother was dating a guy that Shade had been serving sweets to just a few days ago, and yet he'd never thought anything more of it.

"Yeah..." The teenager's timidness seemed to ease up a little at the mention of this. An embarrassed look came over his face though as he seemed to remember something. "Um...sorry about that time I spilled your order on you..." He'd apologized profusely when it had happened, but he still felt the need to do it again.

Suddenly, he remembered what was currently playing on the TV and quickly turned, grabbing the remote before switching it off. Great, now his Mom's boyfriend probably thought that he watched little kid shows; that was just terrific. Well, he supposed that he could just tell them that he'd been channel surfing, and that had just been the channel he'd ended up on when they'd walked in.

Next to Theo, Luna smiled; so far, things were going well. Or at least, as well as things went when it came to Shade. She wasn't so much worried about him being okay with her dating as she was worried about how he'd adjust to having someone like Theo around. True, they were still only just dating right now, but the last man she'd been with had left a less than pleasant effect on her son. She had no doubt that it would take a fair bit of time for Shade to get used to it.

"I'll go put some coffee on, alright?" She leaned over and gave Theo a light kiss on the cheek before heading off to the apartment's kitchen, wondering if she should get out some cookies as well. She'd quite quickly learned of Theo's love of anything sweet, but she wasn't sure if bringing them out would be a good idea or a bad one.

"So...um..." Shade scratched the back of his head, hoping that Nyx would remember to keep still as he kept her hidden in his pocket - Mom's boyfriend or not, he couldn't just go around showing her to everyone he met. The impling boy especially didn't want to risk something like that when he didn't know what Theo's opinions on Essentics were yet. "How long have you and Mom been going out...?"

Theo grinned goofily as Luna walked away, his cheek still warm from where she'd kissed him. It took a moment for him to realize that Shade was talking, and he blinked, whipping his head around. He bit back a 'huh?', trying not to look stupid as he worked out what had been said in his head. He managed, after a few confused moments, and hoped the kid didn't think him slow. He wasn't stupid. Just...distracted.

"Not long. Three weeks, though technically it's been about a month and a bit..." He wasn't going to go into details about his cowardice. It wasn't something he announced to the general public; and, he thought defensively, it was only with women. Which wasn't exactly his fault. He'd grown up in what may as well have been a monastary. There hadn't been women there, and when women DID visit, they had been nuns.

Of course, he had left, ages ago. So he didn't really have an excuse why he hadn't 'acclimated' to women by now, except that he was a work-aholic.
Which was as bad as being female-phobic.

It was best if he kept his mouth shut.

"How is work going, anyways? Things have been busy there, right?" He hoped Shade didn't mind idle small-talk. He didn't really know him, and couldn't think of anything better to talk about than absolutely nothing of importance. Like the weather. And work.

He felt adequately lame, to say the least.

Despite his nervousness, Shade couldn't help but feel a little amused by Theo's reaction to his mother's simple kiss. He knew that people tended to act weird when they were dating but good lord, he couldn't remember ever seeing a man get a look quite like that on their face before!

'A month...' The impling boy found himself wondering why he hadn't noticed sooner. Then again, this was probably the first time that his mother had actually brought Theo home, so the boy couldn't have known...all the same, he felt rather oblivious. He should've figured it out! It certainly explained why his mother had been so cheerful lately - not that she wasn't normally, she'd just been more-so as of late.

"Work? Oh, um...work's been good." Shade was relieved to say that he'd been getting better at it. Like most new employees, he'd made his fair share of first-timer mistakes, but now he'd gotten the hand of talking to customers and taking orders - he never had any problems with doing the occasional repair to any equipment the bakery had, being the little tinkerer that he was. "Aislynn said that she might start teaching me to help her bake soon..." Which, admittedly, left him nervous. He'd never been particularly well-known for his cooking skills...

Actually, he wasn't allowed anywhere near the stove. Pizza pops and instant noodles were what his and Nyx's meals usually consisted of when Luna wasn't home to cook. A question came to mind as Shade talked about his job. "Where...do you work, anyway? I never got to ask at the bakery."

"Coffee's on." Luna smiled as she came out of the kitchen. "Why don't we all sit at the table? I'm sure that we'll all be more comfortable in there." She'd finally decided that she would set out some cookies. Hopefully, Theo's sweet-tooth wouldn't get the best of him.

"If you ever learn the recipe for those cinnamon buns of hers, tell me." He winked co-conspiratorily with the boy, chuckling.
"My job? Well, I'm a..." he chose a title. "Cop, would do the trick. Right now, I'm specifically on...investigations." But he doubted the boy would know anything about it.
"It's actually not all that interesting." He shook his head, grinning. "Nothing any kid wants to stick their nose in."
Because really, he was beginning to think he WAS crazy. Maybe all of the Essentics were gone.

He looked up as Luna spoke, then smiled, nodding. Sitting at the table sounded nice. He followed her over, pulling her chair out for her and gently pushing it in for her as she sat down. Then, he took a place beside her, restraining himself when he saw the cookies and only taking two. The cookies also gave him an excuse to stay silent. He wasn't sure what to say... Did Shade like him? Hate him? Approve, or not? He was so quiet. It was hard to read him.

Well, Theo was certainly friendly; maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. A small smile came over his face and he nodded a bit as the adult brought up the cinnamon buns - he remembered that Theo often got those when he came to the bakery. Maybe they were his favorite.

Wait, he was a cop? The impling suddenly had to force himself to remain calm. ********, his mother was dating a COP! Last year, this wouldn't have been a problem. Now, however, he had an Essentic, AND he was dating a guy 6 years older than him (the latter his mother had no idea about). 's**t, s**t, s**t, <********> Now he'd have to be even more careful!!!!
"Sounds hard..." This was not the time to start freaking out. That would just make him suspicious, right? Just chill out and everything would be fine...

Shade couldn't help but feel relieved when Luna called them into the kitchen. The boy climbed over the back of the couch and headed after his mother and Theo, suddenly finding himself smiling a little as Theo pulled the chair out for his mother. Cop or not, he seemed that a decent guy...maybe this would go alright, so long as he was careful.

Luna smiled up at Theo as he pushed her chair in for her and glanced to her son before back to the golden impling. "Did you two have a nice talk?" Shade nodded in response and took two cookies, starting to munch on the one. He waited until he was sure that Theo wasn't paying attention before sneaking the second cookie into his hoodie's pocket so that Nyx could have it. He figured that it was bad enough that she had to hide - he might as well give her something sweet to nibble on while she was stuck in his pocket.

"Yeah, we talked a bit about work..." The boy smiled again, his tail flicking behind him. "Sounds like Theo must do some cool work." Honestly, personal worries aside, Shade couldn't help but admire someone who could do a job like that, even if Theo said that it wasn't that interesting. The boy scratched the back of his head, trying not to look too shy; he hated that he always seemed to get like this around new people, no matter how hard he tried.
PostPosted: Sat Jul 03, 2010 9:19 am

Theo smiled at Shade's compliment.
"Maybe I could show you sometime. Convince you that it's really not." He chuckled, stirring his coffee. "As long as it's not too busy at the station, nobody would mind. Samson brings his kids in when he can't get a babysitter...usually locks them in the holding cell, though. They think it's hilarious. Entertained all day." He grinned at Shade. "Probably shouldn't stick you in there, though."
He was shy. Theo could tell. But he wasn't about to make it awkward by pointing it out or making it obvious.

Shade couldn't help but let his ears perk up a little at Theo's offer. He'd want to take him to work with him? Really? The boy couldn't help but be a little excited by that idea. He looked to his mother as if to ask if it were alright; Luna smiled and nodded a bit.

"It's fine with me, if you want to." Actually, she was quite happy to see that her son seemed to be taking to Theo quite well, despite his shyness. "But it would have to be on a day when you have no school, alright?" Shade nodded in agreement; he would've liked to miss a day of school, but hey, he couldn't complain as long as he got to go.

"Well...I'd like to, if you ever get the time..."
