Hey everyone c: I'm new to this guild so let me introduce myself.
My name is Shelby, I'm 17 and just graduated high school and going on to college in the fall. I live in Maryland in the US. I think it's pretty obvious that I speak English lol, but I took 3 years of high school Spanish and decided that I wanted to start learning French instead, it is a beautiful language and I can't believe I spent all those years learning Spanish instead of French haha. But they are a little bit similar so it is easier for me to catch on to the grammar and other rules of French more quickly :p so right now I am learning French through the Rosetta Stone program and even though I have been working on it continuously for a couple of months now I am still learning on level 1 because it teaches at a slow pace because it repeats the lessons so many times so that it is easier to remember and recall. So hopefully soon I will be able to communicate with you guys better in French and maybe you can help me to learn and teach me a few things! I really want to get to know some of you guys that speak French, I think it would be cool to be friends with people in other places in the world C: so what's up let's chat! biggrin

Hello So Cute The Sun ! Welcome to this guild ! :p Yes, French and Spanish are very similar because of their origins but I don't know if French is harder than Spanish, but if you said not... Bienvenue en tout cas :p Different...Very. Bienvenue!

Diffy, yes I understood most of it and the couple of things that I wasn't sure of I figured out with the help of google translator redface haha
Antios, honestly so far I think Spanish was easier but I can't judge the same way since I am learning French through Rosetta Stone whereas I was learning Spanish in a classroom setting. I am taking French this coming fall in college but that will still be a couple of months lol wink but in Spanish it's easier to look at words and be able to read them aloud, because in Spanish letters and combinations of letters always make the same sounds, and French (like English) is not a phonetic language the way Spanish is. Also, French has many more accents, including the thing with two dots and triangle thing (I think they are called an umlaut and diacritic but I may be wrong haha) those for me are kind of hard to remember when they're used :p but I am constantly learning and things become easier for me cool
Sorry I would have written all of this in French if I had known how!
Also, I learned how to say this today:
Je parle l'anglais, mais j'etudie le francais biggrin

Yes, accents are the ennemies of almost everyone, but keep learning !
The ^ is the "accent circonflexe", the umlaut is in German (wich looks like a tréma). This "¨", in French, is a "tréma".
I think I can't really explain when they are used because I don't have all the words to explain it x)
Don't worry, I think poeple will understand you can't write in French right now :p

Alors, "etude" ... c'est un nom? "etudie" c'est la conjugaison? Ou "etude" n'est pas un mot? x)
Et, j'ai commence' etudier francais quand j'[avais?] 10 ans. C'est douze ans. Comment dit-on?
And Sun, I'd say you think Spanish is easier because you've had a longer time studying it. I consider it confusing that they have more than 26 letters in the alphabet, lol. I think French is easier. wink

"J'ai commencé à étudié le français", ensuite, ça dépend de ce que tu veux dire en anglais : si tu veux dire que tu étudies l'anglais depuis 10 ans, ou si tu l'as étudié quand tu avais 10 ans.
C'est douze ans. Tu veux dire par "I was 12" ? Dans ce cas, on dit "j'avais 12 ans". :]

Rosetta Stone is a computer program that teaches you a secondary language, but their method is a little different than a class would be, they don't translate words from English to French but instead they will show you a picture and give you a word or sentence for it. The more you learn the more complicated the sentences get. Like they will show you pictures of a boy with the word 'garcon'. Then they might show you a picture of a guy running and it will say 'Il court.' Then eventually it might show a picture of a boy running and say 'Le garcon court.' So you start putting things together and learn how to make sentences. The example I gave you is some of the first stuff it starts off teaching you. smile
And I'm glad I am not the only one who thinks accents are confusing haha :p
But I try to do some French lessons every day so maybe soon I can chat with you guys in French biggrin
And Diffy that is probably at least part of the reason that I think Spanish is easier haha and I have had really good teachers to help me, this time I'm pretty much just learning on my own until August lol. I guess only time will let me give a fairer judgment haha

Well, most of the poeple I know don't like accents, and even some words like "maître" are now accepted to be written "maitre" ...

Haha I would use accents if I knew how to type them in on the keyboard whee
But I guess it doesn't matter since I can't really say many things anyway lol. I promise I'm working on it yesterday I put a library book on hold that helps with learning everyday French. biggrin And actually today I had to visit my college for an orientation day to get my upcoming freshman year sorted out and of course I signed up for French smile smile smile but the only class they have for it is 3 days a week at 9 in the morning, and it is a class that I have to drive to a separate campus for to take the class confused that is gonna be so tough. Haha I am really excited though 3nodding

Haha I think they have options in the control panel that lets you switch to an international keyboard with accents. That's probably a simpler way if you don't want to spend a lot of time copying and pasting accent marks :p
I'm going to definitely take French in the fall though I'm not going to drop the class, but I'm sure it's going to be a little hard for me to find the motivation to wake up early enough for class some days lol. But I absolutely still want to do it mrgreen
