The door to the wagon opened with barely a sound and Mikaril stepped out into what was considered in the Underdark to be the cool night air. In his arms he held a bundle of soft, pink cloth, and from it's wrappings a tiny head poked out, crowned with white hair. Under normal circumstances, one might have been able to see the two pink eyes of little Mikkyila, but they were currently squeezed shut as she was crying, the edges dotted with tiny tears. Try as they might, neither Mikaril or Kyil had been able to get her to sleep tonight; she had just continued to cry and even flailed her tiny arms when any attempts were made. Poor Kyil had insisted on being he one to settle her down night after night, and Mikaril couldn't help but notice the haggard look on his poor friend's face as the nights went on. Which was why tonight, when Mikkyila showed no signs of settling down for the night, he himself had violunteered to hold the little one and sooth her to sleep while Kyil got some much-needed rest.
But as he shut the door behind him, the click barely audible as Mikky's cries continued, he wondered if he might have offered too hastily. Being the youngest in his family, he had had no previous experience with babies, or what to do if they cried. He wished he had watched Kyil a little more closely to see how he had calmed her. He had heard him singing to her on occasions, but growing up in a house whose walls echoed with chants and screams, song was still a foreign sound. He could hum a little, but even that was something he felt he needed more practice in, and he doubted that his small sounds would carry past poor Mikky's cries anyway. Looking down at his crying daughter, he gently bounced his arms up and down ,the way he had seen Kyil do on occasions. "Shh, it's okay Mikky. It's okay; Daddy's here."

Babies simply fussed at times. Mikky though fussed every night. Sometimes all she needed was a bottle of warm milk. Other times her belly was uncomfortable with gas and needed to be patted on the back. Some nights she fussed because she simply did not wish to sleep. Tonight happened to be one of those nights. Mikky did not wish to sleep. She did not wish for the time of quiet and aloneness to occur. If she continued to cry, she was not alone. Though it was always the mommy that carried her and soothed her. Having Mikaril, someone whom she was not too familiar with in this aspect, caused her little wails to grow sharer in her dismay. She wanted the familiar soft and sure hands to hold her. She wanted the familiar gentle voice that made pretty sounds whispering to her. Mikarils voice was not a stranger, but he was not the 'usual' in her lif. With her little hands fisted, she struggled to wave one above her head. Her little legs scrunched up against her belly and she tried to kick at the soft pink cloth wrapped around her. "Waaaaaaaah. Oooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaa. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!"

Had Mikaril had more knowledge of babies, he might have known something about milk heated just right and dispersing gas pain. But he did know that babies slept a lot, and concluded that they needed all of that sleep. The thought that little Mikky just didn't feel like sleeping seemed downright inconceivable. He swore to himself that if he ever succeeded in getting the little one to sleep, he would drill Kyil in the morning and absorb everything he could about caring for these tiny, beautiful creatures.
But right now, the tiny beautiful creature was determined not to be sated, and it was all Mikaril could do to keep from dropping her as she flailed and kicked in her little pink blanket. He adjusted his arms, trying to get Mikky into a firmer position in his arms without hurting her or giving her that impression. He wanted so badly to please her, to turn her tears into smiles, to have those beautiful pink eyes staring up at him with the same innocent and undeserved adoration that her 'mother' always showed him. It seemed like no matter where he was in his walk in life, he would always be seeking to please a female. Well, at least this one had the potential to love him back.
"Hey, come on Mikky; please don't cry." He bounced her gently in his arms. "Hey, I know; I can't sing like Kyil, but how about if I tell you a story?" He lowered his voice, trying to make it sound as soothing as though he were singing, like Kyil. "What about a story about how Mommy and Daddy pulled our first job together?"

Fussing was a tiring event. All the kicking and waving and face scrunching crying always took it's toll on her little bundle of energy. Mikkyila slowed her struggles as Mikaril did his best to cradle the small form he held. Her tears and cries did not abate right away either. Though they did have a pause when he whispered to her. She may not have understood the words Mikaril spoke, but she could hear the softness of his words. She could see the expression on his face. These things that she could almost grasp caught her attention and for a brief moment gave Mikaril a period of quieter peace.

((Indeed! ^_^))
As he both saw the tears begin to diminish and hear the anguished cries slow and almost cease altogether, Mikaril found himself seizing onto a thread of hope that he may yet be able to calm Mikky down and maybe even help her to drift off to sleep. He decided to wait until she had stopped crying enough so that he wouldn't have to shout the story at her, and even ventured to bring up a corner of the blanket and wipe the tear tracks from her round little cheeks.
"Well," he began, pacing back and forth in front of the wagon, thinking perhaps that the repetitive motion would be more helpful than his rocking her with just his arms. "That night I was supposed to be helping Kyil learn how to be a good thief. After all, you had to do something to put bread on the table. Your 'mother' has good hands, but you can't put those to good use on the street without getting yourself in one big mess of trouble. So together, we planned to rob a magic store." He shifted his grip on Mikky a little so that he could raise one hand and carefully blow onto it before waving it in her field of vision, allowing the slightly intensified heat signature to trail behind and form patterns and shapes that lasted for barely a second. "All sorts of pretties in the shop. Lots of big shiny jewels, with necklaces to hang them on, and big books with gold letters and nice soft covers. But it was guarded by a big, scary wizard, and he didn't want to share his pretty things with us. So we decided one night to sneak in there and take them for ourselves."

Mikky's pink eyes latched onto Mikarils face with that blank innocent gaze. Her cheeks were now dry, the faint warm flush of them glowing slightly in the darkness. Mikaril's soft voice kept her ears turned to him, rather the peering out around her where the flutter of movement could be seen around corners. Though her nose wrinkled, a beginning sign of another bout of tears, Mikky's face relaxed when Mikaril began to pace. The motion was a familiar one without a doubt. Kyil had paced with her so often, that it was easy for the girl to flop her head against Mikaril's shoulder.
The soothing flow of Mikaris voice and the gentle motion calmed her fussy nature. When Mikaril shifted her and blew on his fingers, Mikky's eyes followed the faint trail he drew. One of her chubby little hands reached up and grabbed at the trail of light. "Ah." She murmured in a soft voice.

Seeing that the pacing seemed to be helping Mikky to stay calmer, Mikaril made certain to continue as he went on with his story. He could almost feel his insides melt as he saw her reaching up curiously at the little patterns of light that faded like smoke with his words. "First we waited until everyone had gone home to sleep. Then we snuck over to the wizard's door." He moved his fingers in a walking motion after blowing on them, smiling at the pretty pattern they left at the quick motion. "He had a really big door with all sorts of beautiful patterns on it; symbols, pictures, even gemstones so big, you could see your face in them. Just think; if he put such things on his door, what would be waiting for us inside?"
Grinning, Miakril reached out and lightly touched Mikky's nose with his fingers, then pulling them back as though to pull something away from her face. "Kyil sucked all of the bad magic out of the door, and in we walked. There were all the treasures we had dreamed of, and more. So many books with gold pages and jewel-encrusted covers, lots of magic wands with anything on them from jewels to feathers to hair and even mithril all along the edges. So much jewelry, you could put it on and be the envy of the Underdark. I went right to the jewelry, and Kyil went over to the robes and garments. They were soft like the foam on a good mug of beer, and some so strong that if you hit it, you might hurt your hand. There were lots of magical herbs and spices, and they filled the air with a pretty smell!" He made his fingers dance along, making little patterns of wisps, much like he imagined a scent would look like if one could see it.
"But of course, as we filled our bags, we had to be careful not to wake the wizard. Because if we did, and he came down and saw us taking all of his magical things, he would turn us into fish and then eat us for his supper!" He mimiced a small fish with his hands, working fast to try and give them impression of two.

Mikkyila's pink eyes remained open fairly wide as she saw the trailing glow in the air. It disappeared before she could grab it, but that did not stop her from trying. Her head moved in curious little twitches, as she had not quiet gotten the hang of just moving her eyes to follow movement yet. "Nah!" She exclaimed loudly as Mikaril walked his fingers in the air. Her small hands fisted and she waved them at her sides as a expression of her excitement.
Those eyes finally did move on their own though. They crossed to look at her nose tip as Mikaril lightly tapped it. For a comical moment, her small little lips formed a O of surprise. Her hands reached out, and smacked over her nose. Though not hard enough to actually cause her harm. She held her nose and managed to uncross her eyes in time to watch the dancing of his fingers in the air again. "Amnabbahbaa!" She babbled in response to the movement, and she again reached out to try and catch the fading trail of heat in the air. Mikaril's hand moved so quickly then, leaving Mikky looking like she was in a stunned state. Kyil had sung to her, pet her and rocked her. But he had never done something like this before!

Mikaril looked startled at the sudden torrent of babble that came from Mikkyila as she sought to grasp at his heat apparitions, but he thought that her curious little voice was one of the most beautiful things he had ever heard in all of his life. And thank goodness, she wasn't crying anymore. He much preferred her babble and wide eyes to her cries and tears. He was just hoping that he could keep it up and not have her crying again by accident; with his luck.....but he mustn't think such things. This little one deserved a proper story, and ill luck be damned; he would give her one!
"And so we filled our bags up to the very top, and were just getting ready to leave when suddenly....." He paused for emphasis and made as though to look around in a state of alertness. "Suddenly we heard a strange noise. Because even though we had opened the wizard's door, we didn't know that the wizard had created a monster to guard around his shop. And as we were heading out the door, we could hear it just outside, ready to rush in and grab us! We could see it lurking just in front of the shop's window; it was a big, hulking thing, covered in armor so dark that if you put a candle to it, it wouldn't even shine." He moved his fingers about to imitate a big shape vaguely resembling a person, moving his hand up and down a little to simulate heavy breathing.
"And so there were two things Kyil and I could do; we could either stay there and let the wizard wake up and catch us, or we could face the monster, and run away with all of our pretty things."

She was drawn in now. Thoroughly occupied by the soft voice, the expressions upon his face, and the manner in which Mikaril moved his hands. Mikky could not possibly understand the story being told, but there was enough stimulation to keep her attention. Her little hands opened when Mikaril made the image of a big shape with his hand and made it mock breath. Her little face was filled with wonder and interest. Those darling pink eyes fixed on his face with rapt attention. She liked the movements and the sounds. She liked the attention. Her woes from before were all forgotten. Any desire to fuss and cry were gone, replaced by the wonder of this story.

"And so," continued Mikaril, "The big monster kept coming, and we couldn't hide. He filled the doorway with his presence, big scary eyes peering at us." He breathed on his two fingers and held them up, hoping they would pass for a pair of eyes. "We stood there, frozen in place, not knowing what it would do. It could have shouted and raised the alarm, but it just stood there, scaring us to pieces. So I pulled out my dagger, and just as the monster saw it and started charging, I threw it at the beast and hit it right on the mouth!" He mimed hurling a dagger and made a heated motion of the monster falling, making a silly noise as it hit the ground.
"I hit it in the mouth so hard, that it's teeth were all broken and it couldn't talk." Mikaril made a goofy face, like a stunned person, and hid his teeth with his lips, as though he had no teeth. "Muh....muh.....oaaahh....pop peefs!" Licking his mouth, he continued. "While the monster was sitting there, not talking right, Kyil and I dashed right past him and out of the shop!" Moving his fingers to imitate two running drow, he smiled and winked at Mikkyila. "And so we escaped from thr wizard. But if we thought that was going to be the end of our adventure......it wasn't."

Mikkyila's attention was so caught up in Mikaril. His movements and sounds had her rapt with attention. When he made the motion of throwing the dagger and something falling, it almost seemed too much for the baby. Her little hands fisted up by her face and they shook in small excited trembles. Her eyes remained impossibly wide and her mouth opened into a larger O. "Ahahahahahahah!" She babbled excitedly as she shook with over excitement. In the next moment though, she released a high pitched squeal of laughter. The silly noises bade by Mikaril when he pulled his lips over his teeth was so amused to her!
"WEEEHEEHEEE!" She squealed. Her legs kicked wildly to either side and the awed expression squished up with one of laughter. The wink caught her attention, and her hands reached up in an attempt to grab the fingers that had just been walking along in the air. "Ahnum!" She declared cheerfully.

Mikaril thought he would never again hear a sound as sweet as Mikkyila's laughter as she repsonded to his silly noises. She really did seem to be loving his story; she reacted better than any person his own age ever could. Of course, she was still so sweet and innocent; things such as this were not yet commonplace to her. Already he found himself contemplating how sad the day would be when she would grow tired of his stories, and he would then recollect this day, when she heard her first.
He smiled for a moment as he let Mikkyila grasp his fingers before continuing. "We ran deep into the city where the wizard or his monster would never ever find us. We had just stopped for one little moment to rest, when suddenly, we looked around and there were eyes all around us!" He freed his hand in order to make the little dots for eyes. "And then we were surrounded on all sides by......big scary trolls! They had drool all over their faces and their teeth were sticking out like sharp rocks." He stuck his two fingers out beneath his chin to indicate fangs, then started dotting his face. "They had pimples the size of craters, and they carried huge clubs! They surrounded us and told us that if we didn't hand over ALL of our loot, they would sit on us one by one and squish us!"

Mikkyila attempted to nom fiercely on Mikarils fingers in her excitement. The story had surely riled her up with all the sounds and motions that Mikaril had made for her. When Mikaril took his hand away from her, she turned her pink eyes up to peer at him curiously. Her hands lifted and grasped at the little dots he was making to distract her. "Nahm!" She called out in her delight and clapped her hands together quickly.

Wondering too late if he was riling her up enough to keep awake instead of put to sleep, Mikaril went on with his story. "And so the trolls surrounded us on all sides, and we didn't know what to do. Kyil was in front of me and I was behind, not because I was scared, but I wanted to make sure none of the big brutes snuck up on us. Suddenly, I remembered that we had a whole sackful of magical things right there with us!" He chuckled, remembering full well how silly they had been to not realize that sooner.
"I reached into the bag and pulled out a pretty wand." Mikaril warmed up his index finger and held it aloft, as though holding a wand. "I already had my dagger, so I gave the wand to Kyil. Just as the trolls were closing in, Kyil bravely held up the wand...." He held out his finger as though brandishing it, "And then he squirted out TONS of sticky webbing, and all the trolls got stuck!" Already having one arm full of swaddled baby, Mikaril put two of his fingers together like legs and pantomimed a hop that indicated the legs were all stuck together. "They all fell down and wiggled there, like big ugly worms, and we dashed right past them. Kyil was so clever, he left the wand right there as we ran by, so that when the wizard finally caught up, he thought the trolls had done the robbing all along! Of course, the monster couldn't say it was us because all of his teeth were gone. As for me and Kyil, we ran all the way home with our loot and lived happily ever after."
Mikaril smiled and looked down at Mikky. "And that's the end of the story. Did you like it?"
