I personally find Zoos to be helpful to our society and the the animals.
MOST Zoos take in rescude and abandoned animals and nurses them to health and gives those that cannot live in the wild a home forever, while at the same time, gives the humans who visit a clearer view on hated and not-so hated animals and helps them better understand them.

Some Zoos let you interact with trained animals to show just how benificial and not-scary they are. I can't tell you how many friends i'd just like to take somwhere to show them snakes aren't scary. Geebus.

I realize some underclass Zoos are the exact opposite of this, but I'm talking about the general idea behind the design of the Zoo.

What do you think?

If you've ever read "Life of Pi" (which I recommend for animal lovers) the general animal lover's idea of zoos as a confining space for animals will probably change. Animals in zoos are regulated and taken care of quite well in most cases, since they are a valued investment.

I like zoos, most, anyways. I'm sure there are zoos that don't take care of animals properly.

I like general idea's of Zoo taking care of the animals, and help preserve them. But unfortunately there's many zoo's that don't take proper care of the them. I've been to places where the animals are locked into small cages, and the public are allowed to bring their dogs. This makes many animals upset; I witnessed an incident when wolves became frustrated and angry because a dog was standing outside the cage, barking at them.

But fortuantely, there's also places where the animals are well tended, and I'm all for that. Like the zoo in Kristiansand, Norway. Most of the animals there have huge spaces, and run around in the forest. It's nice when they have a few spots where they can withdraw from the public's eyes whenever they want some peace and quiet. Many people doesn't like that though, since you just get to see the most shy animals around feeding time.

My opinion on zoos always depends on the space and quality of the animals' cages. I also feel they should have large enough areas to walk around, with some objects to hide in/behind, items to play with, et cetera.

There is something I've heard of in a zoo or two that gives the animals privacy while letting the visitors see them. One zoo made a tinted one-way window for their red wolf exhibit. The people can see the wolves, but the wolves can't see the people.

Ya I'm gonna have to agree with all of you so far. The concept behind Zoo's is fantastic. A well run zoo not only is pleasent for the animals but it also allows people to see and come in contact with animals they never would have a chance to. This not only expands their knowledge, but it also builds an appreciation of our fuzzy friends.

I hate to be the negitive one but I dont agree with this. At lest not in the context that I've seen. Handaling snakes and things of that nature (things that you would find at least a cusin in your own back yard) is ok. But I've seen zoos that lead "trained" big-cats around and alow people to pet them. Though part of me says "OMG THATS SO COOL! I WANT TO PET THE BABY TIGER!!!" the part of me that is a total animal advocate says its wrong. Becuse it teaches people that the animals can be turned into pets. A tiger or a lion has its beauty is because its wild. I dont think its right to say "hay, this animal cant harm you. Its just like your house cat" They are not. Though my house cat shows some wild tendencys, he is nothing like a big-cat. I dont think its right for zoos to say they are.
I also dont like the "captive breeding" thing. But thats a whole other story.
All in all though, I think zoos are a good way for people to learn about wild animals and for injered or abandoned animals to have a place to go. And their I went and ranted again. Sorry.

I don't think walking animals like tigers shows that they're domesticated. It just shows that those being walked are used to human contact. People need to stop being so gullible and closed-minded and need to realize that a wild animal is a wild animal. Even if that tiger is able to be walked, it could kill or severely injure someone instantly if it wanted to. In fact, they're only walked when they're in the mood for it. If the tiger seems irritable, it stays behind. I saw a video of a tiger that leapt onto a trainer during a demonstration and injured him...and it was just playing. Had the tiger really been acting aggressively, it would have killed him.

The whole purpose of walking animals like tigers is to promote the fact that they are not insane animals who will kill anything and everything just because they can. I've never seen a zoo promote keeping them as pets. In fact, if you watch them feed tigers meals (not the whole feed-them-milk-from-a-bottle-as-a-treat. A real meal), you'll notice that they never, never go in the cage with them. Or come within contact distance. Tigers are extremely possessive when it comes to their food. People who only pay attention to the tiger being walked really need to talk to one of the animal's zookeepers.

Okay, so there's my rant for the day. xd

There is a Zoo i think that need to either send the big animals to a diffrent bigger zoo or make the zoo bigger and that is the licoln park zoo in Chicago. I was just there not too long agoa and the african wilddogs hardly had any space to run around and if they were to run around they would fall off the grass down into the pit that makes sure they cant escap. But zoos like brook feild or the australia zoo are good because they are big and they work to release animals back into the wild.

I do agree that some zoos need way more space for their animals. I grew up going to the Columbus Zoo, but I didn't like it when I got older, moved away, and visited teh Indianapolis Zoo. Though some of their animal cages were small, Columbus' were worse. However, the Columbus Zoo has been working to create new enclosures for the animals that really needed it, and they brought in new animals like rescued manatees. Overall, I'm becoming more and more satisfied with their exibits.

I've only seen African WIid Dogs in the Indianapolis Zoo. I don't know how difficult it would be to contain them once they start running, but I wonder if that's a reason why they're restricted. The Indianapolis Zoo didn't have the largest exhibit for them, but they had space to do a little running back and forth. I do know that keeping animals like cheetahs can be difficult. They can actually dig under fences up to 3 feet underground. eek

If the zoo is treating the animals well, giving them companions and a decent amount of space, then I don't mind them.

I hate the ones that put the animals in cages or very small spaces, or leave them alone without a companion.

I like the general idea of zoos. Yes, it does give rescued and hurt animals a place to stay and be nursed to health. And its a great place for humans to learn about them :3

mixed feelings on zoos

Sure, the ideals are nice, but zoos don't always do what they say they do. "They save animals!" is the general idea, but in reality, zoos are basically places for animals you always see in Noah's ark picture books. Lions, tigers, rhinos, and other big, popular animals. Everybody loves them, so why keep them in enclosures much smaller than their normal habitats against their obvious will? It's just sick to do so unless that is their best habitat. The endangered species which need to be replenished shouldn't be kept in enclosures, they should be kept in parks, or sanctuaries. Now, I don't even think endangered species should be saved unless it was human's fault. Humans endanger many species, but if a species starts dying out due to natural selection, than it's just stupid to keep alive all the moronic, clumsy, and weak animals in place of the animals that can survive as the fittest.

I personally like zoos having worked in one. the animals are treated very well and though there are some shows most are going on what tigrs could or would do in the wild to give the audiance a view of natural behavious of animals and durring the shows they continuously say how dangerous and wild the animals are and how there not domestic animals and should not become one.

The breeding program is also a way t keep endangers species up i mean there are species that have only afew hundred in the wild and are loosing them so fast thell be gone in 10 years. zoos are the only chance our grandchildren will ever get to see them.

Pluss alot of zoo's no longer have the cartoon style box with metal bars with barely any room a lot of zoo's give a large area to the animals like the Bronx zoo and bush gardens.
