Well, I just saw Hostel today. I think my expectations might have been a bit too high. Well, the movie was allright but it could've been better.

1. There was too much sex. They could have easily cut down on the sex scenes and added more to the rest of the movie.

2. Some things just bothered me, such as a girl walking down the street with her eye gauged out and no one seemed to car. What the hell?

The idea of the movie was good though. Basically, there is a building full of rooms and each room has a chair and a person tied to the chair. Then, whever comes to pay can fill their torturous desires and torture whoever is tied to the chair.

My favorite scene is where the guy (I don't remember any of their names) is talking to the guy who is about to torture someone and they have a discussion on the best ways to torture people and how they feel about it.

Well, if anyone else has seen it, post what you thought.

I've played a comedian while talking about the movie in MySpace groups long enough, and I believe I'm ready to be serious.....

Just to refer to a few issues brought up in the original post, and yes, this does contain major spoilers:

1.) The excessive nudity and sex in the first half of the movie is present to mirror the excessive violence and torture in the second half. The three backpackers paying to do whatever they want with the prostitutes in private rooms at a brothel in Holland is simply a much less harmful version of everything the businessmen are doing in the Slovakian hell; however, both institutions have been established to provide visitors the chance to fulfill their desires. I also find it interesting that, in your own opinion, the sexual content is insignificant. There's nothing wrong with that; it's just that I found it funny that "the American businessman" (the evil character you were referring to in your favorite scene, and yes, that is what the character is credited as) was mentioning how he finds sex to be unmemorable and meaningless and how much more important it is to torture and kill a person.

2.) If you pay close attention to the scenes with the deformed girl after she and Paxton escape from the "prison," nobody ever looks at this character. It's not that they don't notice her, it's just that nobody turns around to look at her. However, to be fair, surrounding people do take note of this character after she jumps in front of a train to provide Paxton with the neccessary distraction his character requires to reach safety. The character was hardly even given anything that resembled personality and is, basically, the equivalent of a James Bond gadget that doesn't come into use until the protagonist needs it to achieve a goal. Even during the moments where she and Paxton come across the bubble gum gang or Natalya, Svetlana, and Alex at the film's climax, the camera focuses only on Paxton and the obstacles. Besides, even if they did notice the wounded girl, the bubble gum gang is only interested in....well, bubble gum, and Natalya, Svetlana, and Alex are killed before they can do anything about it.

Probably not; it's a pretty intense film...and the fun gratuitous sex and nudity just makes the already twisted violence much more dark.

Well, some scenes were good in comparison to mirror the second half. Such as the building with lots of rooms with the women to have sex with. I really liked that comparison to later in the film. But, what I mean is the scenes such as where he has sex with Natalya. I thought that scene could have been a little bit shorter. I have no problem with sex at all. It's just I felt they went on a little too long in certain scenes.

I liked the movie. I thought it was pretty good, but I did think it could have been better.

The sex scenes with the backpackers and the girls at the hostel are just there to further create a contrast between the world inside the "art exhibit." The young men who are just view women as means of achieving pleasure really do not care about their sex partner's personality or well-being; however, the tables are turned when Natalya, who reveals having the same sentiment, takes advantage of Paxton when he discovers the horrors awaiting him inside the death factory (remember when she calls him her b***h). To be fair though, this plot piece could have been better illustrated had Natalya taken on a greater role as one of the torturers.

On the comercial (Sp?) it said that paramedics had to be called because people fainted and things like that. Is it really that scary? Here's to hoping!!

I'm fairly certain Quentin Tarantino just felt like echoing William Castle (the big horror franchise personality in the 50's and 60's who would offer a large sum of money to accomodate the families of loved ones who are, literally, scared to death while watching his films) for the promotional phase for the film he helped finance and find distribution. I thought it was cute because I haven't heard of a film being promoted in that fashion....well, ever since I came across an ancient film review penned by Roger Ebert which made note of a woman passing out during Re-Animator.

If Lion's Gate actually paid for an ambulance to be waiting outside every theater where it was playing, however......man, that would have made for the greatest promotional stunt.....since about 1979 when cops in the Mid-West region had to stand guard at theaters showing The Warriors to make sure fights didn't break out.

All I got was managers at a United Artists theater refusing anyone under 21 to buy more than one ticket to a single viewing and tight security to make sure that nobody that bought a ticket to see (I swear to God) a midnight showing for Bloodrayne sneaks into the theater. I still say they should've gone with placing parametics on call right in the parking lot.

Did Quentin have anything to do with the making of the film or did he just back it?

I seem to remember that he offered to produce Sin City if they let him be a guest director, and I LOVE his style, so I wanted to know if I should look for his influence.

Tarantino is only credited as an executive producer, but the film does include some more than obvious references to his original works.

I saw it on opening night. It wasent as good as I thought it would be. I was expecting more violence but it seemed like their was more sex. All in all it was still a good movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but some reviews I have read paint Slovakia (the whole damn country mind you, not just the Hostel) as some sort of freakishly capitalistic greedy wasteland where "anything and everything is for sale". rofl

*shrug* I will snag the DVD and view with open mind and empty stomach

I know I probably shouldn't have read this, since I have intentions of seeing it this weekend and there were a FEW spoilers >.> but I was really questioning myself wether or not this movie would be worth the $9.50 to go and see ... and, it seems like it'd be my kind of movie. The feedback here are way better than just reading synopsis and reviews by critics.

I guess I'll have more feedback once I actually SEE the movie, lol ^_^'

I may have to give it a while to see, but I think Hostel may have turned me off Horror movies. Or at least, the realistic ones.

*shudders* That film was every bit as horrific as I thought it would, and in some places, even worse.

I can say anything positive about the movie except that it was original.

Hostel is unbelievably brutal, even for the hardest of the hard-core Horror fans (like myself; I avoid the Last Summer and Jeepers Creepers type Horror flicks and go for the hard stuff like Italian Horror and Saw).

I said to my friend, that in Hostel there was no worst part; the whole movie was the worst part. I still can't the most horrible scenes out of my head.

Also, as a gay guy, I didn't appreciate having to stare at tits for half the movie but that's a moot point. xd
