Kai was not having a good day.
He had awoken early, before his companion had risen from sleep, and crept away quietly -- hoping not to wake her, as he knew her insomnia made every moment of sleep precious. He had slipped away into the forest, hoping to bring back a pair of rabbits, to surprise Mon with.
Instead, he had collided with a beast -- a vicious, enormous red devil that had attacked him without mercy, and he had barely escaped with his life.
Kai had managed escape by leaping into the river, and he had drifted there for a time, fading in and out of consciousness, weak with bloodloss and his limbs trembling with retreating adrenaline. After awhile, he had found himself in the shallows, and -- with immense effort -- rose to his paws. He hoped he hadn't drifted too far from where they had stopped to camp for the night...
His legs wobbling beneath him, the blue wolf painfully made his way up the bank, sniffing for his companion's scent on the air. Both flanks were heavily torn, and blood still oozed from the edges of the wounds; he held a hindpaw gingerly, as well. He swayed, on the spot, and took a slow step forward, nearly falling on his face.
Oh, this was a mess, he thought, moving very slowly toward where he hoped Mon would be....

She had woken up to no sounds of shuffling around like she was used too. For once, Monaeka woke up feeling rested. It was an odd sensation, which meant her latest findings in mixing leaves together was a success. One she would have to keep on remembering. The wolfess had stretched out and gone about her morning collecting more leaves and logging more data away in her brain.
Kai not being here made her a bit uneasy; he always seemed to get into some kind of trouble when he wandered by himself. With a slow wind blowing toward her, Mon turned her head to it and took a deep breath, only to smell the coppery, metallic smell of blood. And soon she spotted why. Her blue companion was limping, bloody, probably had a concussion. She saw him fall and ran, just broke out in a run, toward him.
"Kai?!" Her voice took on concern, then her faced warped with pain as she skidded to a stop near him. Oh, he was bleeding heavily. He didn't look good at all. "You lay down. Do NOT go to sleep. I'll be right back." Luckily, she had the pain leaves near their sleeping spot, and she had an idea how to stop the bleeding.

"Wouldn't get up for the world," he said, shooting her a sheepish grin. He allowed his legs to give out beneath him and flopped rather ungracefully to the ground, sprawling on his belly. The wounds were along his side, digging deeply into both flanks, and seemed crusted now with mud and drying blood, though the blood seeped and oozed and stained his lovely pelt.
He set his muzzle down upon his forepaws, watching after her with curious eyes. At least she knew what to do, he thought, his eyes half-lidded, ears half-flopping to either side of his head. At least she was on top of things...if he was alone, he...well, he didn't know what he would have done.
His eyelids began to creep down, and he jolted himself awake. Don't sleep -- that's what she'd told him. So he'd better not, although he didn't know why...he was, after all, exhausted...

Mon hurried back with several big leaves dangling from her mouth, pouches of smaller leaves and some pastes. Quickly she set to work applying the past with the tip of her nose to every one of his wounds. It would numb and cool any pain and burning sensation he would feel. Then, she applied several leaves to them; to staunch the bleeding. She knew the paste wouldn't kill all the pain, so she made him something to chew on.
"This will not taste good, but it'll help for the pain, too." She shoved a smelly wad of grass into his maw, not caring if he fought back against her or not. The whole process took several hours, because she liked to check the rest of him for any other kinds of wounds. And she had him flop over to the side to get the other side.
Finally she sat back on her haunches and gave a heavy sigh. He was her biggest project yet. She whined when she looked at him, all battered and bruised and bit her tongue. No, she would save the tongue lashing for when he had enough energy to listen to her. Going off by himself and getting this injured. He was very lucky she knew and studied plants. Monaeka knew he could die from all of this.

He remained silent -- half afraid she might beat him a little more if he said anything, judging from the gleam in her eye -- and quietly consented to her treatment. It felt better immediately, and though he was still weak and shaky, as much from adrenaline as from blood loss, he felt himself beginning to relax. Dutifully, he chewed on the grass that was given to him, grimacing at the bitter taste in his mouth.
At length, as she pulled away, he supposed she was done for now, and ventured to speak. "I caught you a rabbit," he said, with the air of a pup expecting to be chastised. "But...ah...I had to leave it behind."

Mon had to grit her teeth to keep from snapping at him. Injured patients did not want to hear their doctor screaming at them the moment they're done with fixing them. "We'll talk about you venturing off by yourself some other time." Her voice held the promise that he wouldn't enjoy this in the least bit. "But thank you, for trying to hunt for me. You could have waited."
Honestly, she liked hunting with the blue male. There was just so many things she liked about being with him. One was she actually slept. Despite not sleeping next to, or against him, she slept knowing someone was there for her in the morning quite well. ...When she did sleep, anyway. But now she would change her sleeping pattern up to stay up to make sure he wouldn't die on her at night. Which meant she had to take short power naps and hunt for two by herself for a bit.
"Kai.. You know I have no problems doctoring you up, but there's a certain extent you can get yourself bloodied. I don't know everything about these plants yet. I'm still learning. So just... go to sleep if you're tired and let me know if it starts hurting. When I change the leaves, I have to wash your wounds. So you'll have to walk to the river. I'll help as much as I can with that, but you're too heavy!"

"I think I'm okay," he said, glancing back over his haunches, surveying her handiwork. He swallowed, hard, trying to keep down the leaves he had been chewing, and hoped afterward that he wasn't supposed to have spit them out. He attempted to shift his weight to one haunch. "I think it looks...ah..." he winced, and decided against moving, "...A bit worse than it is."
He wished he could have told her he had at least taken a chunk out of the other wolf, that he'd held his own or managed to retain even a shred of his dignity. But he couldn't really lie to her.
"I...I do really appreciate it," he said, at length, trying to meet her eyes. His sheepish smile didn't leave his maw. "I don't really know what I'd do if I were alone out here, right now."

The pale wolfess sighed heavily and pushed him back down. "Don't move. Just sleep now, Kai. Seriously..." She gave him a fond sort of smile, though it seemed tired. Laying down in front of him, she touched her nose with his own and then pulled away for a yawn. "Spit those leaves out whenever the pain dies down. I'll make a new batch whenever you hurt. It's a good thing you didn't swallow them. Probably make you sick."
Monaeka knew she was being just plain mean now.

"Yes ma'am," he said, without a touch of irony in his tone, obediently laying his maw upon his forepaws. Then, at her last words, he practically paled -- his ears flopped down and his eyes looked rather dejected. "...You don't say," he said, and looked decidedly uncomfortable.

She laughed at that and scooted closer, nuzzling his muzzle. "No. I don't say. It was a joke, and a mean one at that. Either way, they won't make you sick or anything. The leaves are harmless; it's the juice that numbs pain by getting in your blood." She scooted back once more and closed her eyes. "Now.. we'll both get a nap and I'll check on you when I wake up." Mon didn't know how much longer she could stay awake; being all hyped up to help someone, then crashing like this? It was usual for her.

"....oh." He eyed her warily. For the time he'd known Monaeka, he couldn't think of a single incident where she'd ever actually cracked a joke. But he smiled uncertainly and nuzzled her back before allowing his eyes to droop closed. A nap did sound quite nice, now that she mentioned it...yes indeed.
Allowing himself to relax, he felt the last of the tension escape his muscles and, now that he was no longer flooded with anxiety, found himself to be exhausted.
He drifted quickly to sleep, interrupted only by the occasional whimper and paw twitch as recent memories invaded his nightmares.

He had managed to drift before her, which was fine with the oddly marked wolfess. With tired eyes, she scanned the parameter once more to make sure there weren't other wolves who would come up and attack them while one was hurt and the other didn't know how to fight. No, in all reality, all Monaeka knew how to do was hunt. Fighting and killing other wolves wasn't high on her list of things to learn when she was a pup. Finally laying her head down, sleep claimed her fairly quickly. It wrapped around her like a warm summer's day.
