Our teeny Guard is down to about 7 members. Nobody really notices us, or they just plain make fun of us. sad Oy! Does anyone have any tip son getting more members for us? We've only recruited about two people. So please help! (I'm sorry for begging. But I really like doing what I do, and most of the other girls do too. We really don't want the to cancel the guard program!)

Definately. Put posters up and ask for announcements. Tell EVERYONE about guard and don't limit guard to just females. Males can do a lot of stuff the females can't. =]
That's how our guard went from 12 members last year, to 36 members for next year.

when you post flyers, make sure you post them at lower schools. like if your a HS guard, put flyers up at MSs. we had almost the same problem (except we also had to figure out how to keep the actual guard class...yeah that was interesting) but we didn't let it faze us. you just have to take advantage of being small, and be beasty anyways smile

There are some really good ideas here!
The guard I was on last year was only 5 people. o.o
One of things they did to get members though was they occasionally performed at school pep rallies or assemblies of both the highschool and middle school.

We have the opposite problem. sweatdrop I don't know the exact size of our guard, maybe 30-40 girls, but it's getting so big that drama and cliques are everywhere. Every year the incoming freshmen are almost doubling the guard and so there's always a big rift between the freshmen and the upperclassmen (or the varsity and junior varsity teams, really). So feel lucky that's not you're problem. But what we do (and you have to get permission) is during the end of the school year, our instructors and one of our band directors take some of the best girls on the guard and they visit a nearby middle school. I went last year and we stayed there all day, performing parts of our winterguard show to the 8th grade girls during their gym classes. Then we taught them how to do drop spins and took down names and emails of the girls who were interested. Ask your band director about it, especially if he wants the band to look good during marching season. biggrin

Being on a small guard isn't all that bad. my guard only has 3 people in it.

We once had a guard of 8, and I loved it. We didn't even have a captain, so when it came retreat time, we just picked at random. Everyone loved our show, too.

Hey no hard feelings, my school just got CG back after about four years and we only have four members. (Me being the Captain) And you just need to prove that CG is more fun then people think it is! And they only make fun because they weren't cool enough to try out =P They are the losers!!

My guard dirctor recruits like crazy. Here are some tips: During tryout season make tons of posters. Talk to your non-guard friends and ask if they'd be interested. Go to the middle school that feeds into your high school to recruit the upcoming freshmen. In fact, my guard even has 7th and 8th graders. Bring your little siblings to practice so they might want to join. Try to get as much publicity as possible. Perform at the pep rallies, try to get in the school newspaper, etc.

argella1300 Being on a small guard isn't all that bad. my guard only has 3 people in it. Unless your school district is cutting jobs. Then your director is number one on the chopping block. And the lower your numbers, the more likely he/she will get cut. For example, they wouldn't cut a band or choir director, because that would effect so many kids, because there are a lot of people in band and choir.
