[title comes from this song]It was an hour or two past the normal midday meal when greenrider E'lai found himself getting the chance to sneak off to the Weyr's mess hall slash kitchens--the morning had been filled with harness repairs and oiling Eltimioth and the time had simply gotten away from him. Being after the usual prepared meal, E'lai was mostly left to fend for himself. He wasn't half a bad cook, especially as he'd spent more time in the kitchens than most of the other chores a weyrbrat had the "option" of taking. Still, he was drawing an absolute blank as he glanced around the preparatory area with pursed lips and a pensive face.

Gabriel had taken the initiative today to finish both her morning and afternoon chores as soon as possible and as such had worked straight through the normal lunch hour. She didn't particularly mind though, for now her work was done for the day and she had the opportunity to fool around in the kitchen and make her own meal.
She was in the middle of slicing herself some wherry meat to prepare for cooking when the greenrider entered the kitchen. She had seen him around many times, but thus far the chance to actually speak with the feminine male had eluded her. "Hello there," she greeted with a bright smile. "You're Eltimioth's rider, right? My name's Gabriel." The young teen had heard plenty of his unusually chatty green, and found the concept of a dragon that liked to talk to others to be rather awesome. Not everyone shared her opinion it seemed, but should the opportunity ever arise she wouldn't mind talking to the green herself. Of course, she didn't know of her restriction against talking to Candidates just yet.

E'lai was rather startled to be randomly addressed, but upon closer examination he thought he maybe recognized the girl's face from around the weyr. She was a Candidate, right? Weyrborn too, he was pretty sure...
"Ah, my name's E'lai, and, yes, Eltimioth's my dragon," he hurriedly said with a slight tentative smile of his own. "Nice to meet you, Gabriel. I see you're getting a late lunch as well," he added, gesturing vaguely to the girl's partially prepared meal. And unlike him, she looked to have made a decision about what to have.

"E'lai? That's a neat name. Nice to meet you too." She noticed that he had seemed rather surprised when she first addressed him. Was he not spoken to that much, or had he just not noticed her presence in the kitchen? Well, no matter. Either way they were conversing now. "Yeah, I spent the morning doing chores and ended up working through lunch. I've decided to try roasting myself some wherry. What were you plannin on gettin?"

He faintly flushed at the compliment; he was well aware his vowel-heavy name was a bit unusual amongst riders but he'd much preferred that variant to his other options (E'san? No thanks!). "That's very industrious of you," he noted, remembering more often than not he'd have done the same--except then he'd go on and help the others too. "I've no idea actually; if you don't mind, perhaps I'll just have what you're having." She looked like she knew what she was doing.

"Sure thing," Gabriel replied, picking back up the carving knife and getting more meat. "Just a warning though, I like to experiment with the seasonings, so no guarantee that this will turn out well." Leaving the sliced meat on the carving block, the teen wandered over to where the seasons were to 'pick her poison' as it were. "So, I hear that Eltimioth likes to talk a lot? What's that like compared to the others?"

"I'll trust you not to off me--but I don't mind strange combinations and at the worst, I'll know what not to try next time," the greenrider said agreeably. As Gabriel continued, he had to wince--even the Candidates now knew about Eltimioth's blabbermouthed tendencies? Well, she was weyrbred...maybe it hadn't passed to the Searched ones yet. He might retain a shred of dignity yet.
"I can't say exactly because I've never had the experience of having a unchatty dragon," E'lai started ruefully, "but in the end, it's not too different. She, uh, has just had to be encouraged a bit in the proper direction. The senior riders think she might work well on Search eventually, but she's...not quite ready for that kind of duty." Meaning she wasn't to the point where she wouldn't embarrass and/or tarnish the name of Trine Weyr on such matters, but eventually...

Gabriel had to laugh at his remark. "I wouldn't try to off you, silly. Besides, that would be such a tragedy to lose a dragon like that over food poisoning." The teen listened to the rest of E'lai's reply with interest. "Ooo, a Search dragon? That could be fun. Wouldn't mind doing that someday." It would be nice to visit different places during a Search.
Just then a small flitter popped into the kitchen, giving a pathetic cry as she landed onto Gabriel's shoulder with whirling red eyes. "Aw, poor baby, did you miss lunch too?" she asked, cutting off a piece of her meat to feed to the young firelizard. "I'm sorry, I thought you'd have eaten." The green gobbled down the wherry meat eagerly, letting out a happy chirp before asking for more. "I suppose I should introduce you to my own green. This here is Mossy. She's still just a baby, so she has a big appetite."

"That's why I said you wouldn't," the greenrider protested, worried he'd been taken too seriously. She didn't seem too concerned about it as she went on, and she did seem interested. Gabriel did seem a nice enough sort--hmm, probably about the same age as he'd been when he'd Impressed Eltimioth. She had plenty of time to Impress a dragon of her own.
E'lai recoiled again slightly in surprise at the combination of flit appearance and its cries, though he really should've been used to it by now. They did tend to appear everywhere. He'd never managed to get one of the little firelizards before Impressing Eltimioth, and then taking care of her kept him so busy he hadn't thought of acquiring one in a long time. But they were cute enough, and he wondered if Eltimioth's possessive streak would allow him even a firelizard. "She's lovely--hello, Mossy," he said with a smile as he leaned in slightly to inspect her. "Congratulations, then, you must've gotten her recently."

E'lai's concerns of being taken too seriously were rather ill-founded, for Gabriel enjoyed the joking banter. "Mhm~ Found her egg near one of the lakes. My friend got a silver one at the same time."
The green chittered a friendly greeting back to the rider before nudging Gabriel for more food. She was still hungry!
The teen giggled before feeding the flit more meat. "Her stomach is a bottomless pit, I swear. Oi, you're going to eat all of my lunch at this rate you silly flit."
The firelizard seemed wholly unconcerned with her human's remark and cuddled close against her neck. She was feeling much better now with food in her belly.
Gabriel smiled and pet the back of the cooing flit. "You're too damn cute, I swear."

E'lai had to smile at the dynamic between Gabriel and the flit's interactions--it reminded him a little of when he'd been a weyrling. "Now just multiply Mossy by about a hundred, and you have the vaguest idea of what it's like to tend to a young dragon," the greenrider said with the slightest hint of a grin. "Bottomless pits come with draconic nature. Still, it's worth it in the end, be the result a healthy adult dragon or a healthy adult firelizard."

"I can only imagine what a baby dragon's appetite would be like," Gabriel said with a laugh. "I look forward to finding out. I doubt the wherries will be nearly as enthusiastic however."
"Hey, do you mind holding her for a few minutes while I make our lunch? She's adorable for certain, but I don't want to accidentally mess up the food because she's tickling me." The teen carefully removed the young flitter from her neck (with some protest) and transfered the female over to E'lai's shoulder.
Mossy quickly made due with the new slightly wider perch and settled comfortably against the crook of the older teen's neck, burying herself under his dirty blond locks and curling her tail around his neck for extra support. She let out a small chirp of approval, her small face peeking out from beneath the hair.
"I think she likes you," Gabriel remarked with a grin before returning to preparing the meat.

"You may rue those words," E'lai said with a chuckle, though he was sure Gabriel, like any other Candidate, actually meant it. The benefits of being a dragonrider far outweighed the negatives--at least, wasn't that why Candidates chose to stand for Impression?
He was a little unsure at the transfer, but the flit didn't seem to be too anxious about leaving her human and perhaps even a little enthused at getting a wider perch on E'lai's broader shoulders. Tentatively he reached up with a finger to stroke the little green's neck. "I think she's probably not very hard to please if she likes me," E'lai said sheepishly. He rather did like the little creature though; he would have to pursue getting an egg of his own more from now on.

"I highly doubt it," Gabriel replied with a confident smile, finishing seasoning the meat before placing the slices in the hearth to roast.
"And why wouldn't she like you? You're a nice guy, and clearly you have an affinity for greens," she said jokingly, referring of course to the fact that his dragon was also a green. "Although I won't deny that she is an attention hog. What sounds good as a side for the meat? Salad? Roasted veggies?"
Mossy responded favorably to the petting, cuddling closer against his neck. This was a nice and warm perch. She approved.

"Affinity for attention hog greens--that sounds about right," E'lai said, with a shake of the head. He continued to pet the little green flit as he contemplated lunch. "Roasted veggies sounds fine--are you sure you don't want me to help?" He felt a bit guilty making Gabriel do all the work. Sure, he was serving as a firelizard perch, but that was hardly an inconvenience...
