Much better than I expected! Originally, I thought "Oh no, another 'Unicorn and the Wasp', another boring historical filler episode, but no I found it really enjoyable.

I absolutely loved this episode. Did anyone else think the alien resembled a chicken?

I thought it was excellent. Next to Girl in the Fireplace, it's probably one of my favorite episodes to date. The scene with them all in the grass looking up at the night sky gave me shivers. And when they take Vincent back to the museum in the future, oh man. I had tears. idc, I was moved.

And the "ultimate gingers" thing made me laugh foreverrrr. rofl

I also wish they would have waited and given Bill Nighy something more spectacular to do in the show. I love him.

[Absolutly beautiful, with a little bit of Angst and a whole lot of fun. Really it was great, I nearly cried when the doctor said "Right Amy, Rory." And Amy was all like "Who?" And the Doctor was like, "I mean Vincent." and then I was like sad ]

There's a message for the Doctor, and it rests upon a work...

Absolutely great episode. Probably my #1 favorite historical based episode, narrowly beating out Girl in the Fireplace. The Doctor was so funny, especially with that quirky device. The scene with them all looking up at the sky was awesome, and I teared up when the curator was talking about Vincent. I loved the "ultimate ginger" comment, that was cute. And the soundtrack/scoring to the episode was great! Genuinely really loved this episode.

Does anyone know what the song was [or who was singing] when they took Vincent to the exhibit?

{{I thought it was fantastic, probably my favorite S5 episode so far, just above 'Amy's Choice'.

I thought the ending was terribly sad, even though we all knew that would happen. Still, Amy's expression when she realized that nothing had changed broke my heart. And when the gallery guide was praising Van Gogh and Van Gogh started crying.

I'm getting the sense that Rory might be returning later on...After all, Amy seems to be showing signs of not remembering Rory, but feeling as if something is missing in her life. Like when Van Gogh pointed out that she was crying, and she didn't even notice.

Anyways. Brilliant episode, I really enjoyed it. Although Bill Nighy needed a bigger role... I love that man.}}

Wow, everyone really enjoyed this episode so now I feel terrible for not-quite-as-enjoying-it :/

I *did* really like how no attempt was made to play down Vincent's mental issues for the sake of keeping him family-friendly (-cough- cuddly Churchill -cough-) and they really didn't waste the premise of having on the show. But, at the same time, neither did they really do anything spectacular with him, either. I don't think there was enough time to adequately serve both the plots they were trying to run and so neither was really finished off well. The space rhino just sort of dies and so so does Vincent, apparently.

So much for progress >.>

Richard Curtis did a good job of writing the episode but to tell the truth I didn't like this episode much either and while it had it's good points, that was lost in the 16mins deleted scenes thanks to the 45min cap off time.

I found that I would have liked it but I have grown to hate that there is never any build up. The Dr just sort of turns up and is always in the thick of things from the get go, giving everything a rushed feel.

The low budget crap really pisses me off and Moffat himself said that after Richard Curtis wrote everything down, He told him that the monster needs to be invissible and the green blood needs to be taken out and replaced by a one time shot of water. It can't be a bright yellow paint monster that covers everyone in sticky goo because it cost too much.
Richard Curtis said that Moffat sat down and re-wrote his ideas from the Dr being absorbed into a painting and fighting the yellow paint monster to just going to visit some church. Richard Curtis also said, if he knew he was going to ruin his story then he would never have wrote it in the first place.
So, this may be the last story we ever get from Richard Curtis.

So you think that because there were no fancy special effects, the episode was bad? That didn't stop 26 seasons of Doctor Who from 1963-1989. Doctor Who has always been about great story telling and great characters which make you forget about the silly rubber suits they were wearing.

@knightofthe21stcentury
I did like the episode in parts. For example it didn't play down any part of Vincent and stuck you in his frame of mind given how the town itself felt. I liked how it wasn't always fake and the doctor sat down to talk to Amy, Vincent, Buy an apple and take in some of the life like a normal perosn would, but this was all cut.

As for special effects? I didn't say I wanted them. I know a few writers and I know when you spend time writing you get into the mind of the people you write about and it takes you on a journey. Writing anything is an art and I think any writer would tell you this. A writer looks on his work as something of perfection, they may never come close but they work hard to come close to something they can live with. And when they are given this job to write an episode that everyone will see, it is their child to begin with but this adds preasure and I can fully understand why Richard Curtis got so mad over someone coming in at the end and re-writing his story after telling him to go wild. It must of felt like it had been stolen and the poor reasons for low budget was just another way of kicking him in the teeth. I find it very unfair to Curtis and stand by him when he says it feels like a stab in the back. for him, Low buget crap was just a rip off. Bob Rogers never re-worked Vincent's paintings for example.

As for special effects though. The whole series has been riddled in bad CGI and the production team can't seem to go 5 seconds with your standard plastic stuff without adding some form of CGI to it. I found this episode made a nice break from it but I still feel this was unfair to the writer. I have no idea why the show is so low buget but we have yet to go to another planet that doesn't look like earth. (We did go to another planet just once before this episode but low buget means we won't be going to other planets much anymore) Actually stand in a dalek ship without it looking like wall-marts storage room or using some proper effects without it all being done by cheap CGI.

And your a little wrong. 1963-1989 did have plenty of special effects and they was all fancy for their time. Gorwing a Robot to 8ft for example, in todays terms that is the same as Avatar. Sure it was all bad but at the time it wasn't. Now this isn't 1963-1989 anymore and bad CGI just doesn't cut it when a story has a fish monster in it. What happened to a studio mock up of latex and clay? Moffat was handed the same funds as RTD and yet we still had decent CGI, we had proper full scale latex models and full body cast's. The costumes for Blink was made to 8 people even though 3 only got used. we seen new planets with 5ft wide background paintings and full scale prop mock ups of flying cars and alien ships.
But now, with the same amount of funding, we have students as the production team. We have the exact same costumes used for stone angels that was baught in Blink. They can't even make a Dalek ship room look Dalek-eee anymore.
So, no. I do not think the show needs special effects to make it good but I do think that when the show is trying to push something then it needs to be as real as possible because this isn't 1963 anymore and it's not like they don't have the money to do it. I have no idea why they are saving so much money because they must have enough to make a Who Movie by now.

Hasn't doctor who always been about the fancy special over the top effects? I am sure I watched the same old shows as everyone else here. And your right! where are all the alien planets?

I liked the episode and seeing how Vince lived his life. It was very sad though.
