Unzu was too new in the pride to have his proper name yet, though honestly he was so new that he could hardly believe that he'd be changing his name. Though he and Akinyi had volunteered to join the pride together, pleased at the prospect of a place to settle down, it was an alien culture, one that he had never ascribed to, full of superstitions. But the dark lion was patient and sought to understand.
And he knew he would settle into the way of life around here. Currently he meandered the territory somewhat alone, almost out of earshot of the main common grounds, used to the terrain. He had not been born here but he had grown up in lands near here, very similar to this place. Moving about and hunting was natural to him as breathing the air. Still, there was something different about the place. In this place, they wanted his name. They wanted to make him theirs entirely and give him a new name that meant something in relation to them.
It blew Unzu's mind a bit, wondering what they would call him. If he were arrogant, would they give him an unkind name? He would have to be careful.

Hal-shikasta, once called Jitimai, had only recently returned home, and had done so with some measure of reluctance. Life outside of the swamp held a certain appeal in that she could be as far away from others as she could ever want...but not as close to. There was no one to run to out there, none of the security that came with being part of a pride.
It was annoying, needing other lions when she didn't want them. So here she was, home but avoiding others as much as she reasonably could - family included. Especially family.
As a result, Shika spent most of her time just wandering. Unfortunately, she wasn't the only one currently doing so. There was some newcomer out and about, too. Great. That was practically as bad as running into family. The young lioness tried to pretend she wasn't paying attention and hadn't seen him; maybe he'd buy it and leave her alone.

Unzu jerked his head up as he spotted something white in the dull tones of the swamp, but didn't pull up short, continuing on, traveling at a path to intercept her. She was young, he realized, around the age where the lions of this pride seemed to disappear. A rare breed, more mysterious to the dark-pelted rogue than the rest of their ilk, though one presumed, by the time they returned as matured adults, they would be prepared to take up the helm and soon become dedicated members of the pride. To think, he had just stumbled upon them! These young creatures were forced to leave and then to return. The life of this pride was very strange to him. Yet he decided to grow used to it, and he would force himself to interact. Yes, that'd help both of them, him to integrate, her to reintegrate, into whatever this pride was.
She either hadn't seen him or was ignoring him, so Unzu grinned and stepped up parallel to her, continuing at her pace. If there was a hint there, he was going to pretend he hadn't seen or was ignoring. That would even up the game now, wouldn't it?
"Hey there," he greeted her, inclining his head at her, quirking his brow. He couldn't resist but to ask, a little teasingly, "How is the adventuring going?"

Dammit. He just had to be a jerk and notice her, didn't he? Clearly, she needed to go for a good swim and make herself less white. Not that that was really likely to be completely amazing camouflage, but it was worth a try. She'd definitely give it a shot once she got out of this.
Shika refused to look at him, practically sticking her nose up in the air, and said in an accusing tone, "It was going just fine."
'Was' being the key word.

The dark lion would have been stupid not to notice that Shika was angry that he had come up to her. Unzu's grin wavered and he looked away, pressing on, not breaking away from her. He knew he'd come upon her at perhaps a bad time, but he didn't think she had to snap at him. Still, he didn't let her ruffle his feathers. She was young.
"Well, sorry to bother you. Why are you so snippy?" he asked, his voice lacking a hard edge, as though he were honestly curious. He knew that the youths had to change their names upon their return, and that they were in much the same position as himself, sort of.
"Did they take your name?"

Ugh, and he had the gall to call her on being 'snippy.' If he were actually sorry to bother her, he'd have gone away once he'd apologized! Not kept bothering her. Her ears flattened irritably. "Because I am."
Shika wasn't just being contrary with that answer, either - it was the truth. She wasn't snippy because of some mood she was in or something that had happened, she just was. Disagreeable was, more or less, her constant state of being.
"No." What a stupid question! She'd have asked him why he'd ask something so ridiculous, but that would have invited further conversation. Although with her luck, he'd keep right on pestering her anyway.

Unzu was not, in fact, sorry to bother her. He knew she was pissed, but he was persistent. Her shortness persisted as well, though that didn't surprise him, and he laid back his own ears, glancing over at her, his bright green eyes flicking over her, then looking back ahead. For a time he did not say anything, quietly keeping pace with her, deciding on another angle to approach her.
"What are you doing out here alone?" he asked, looking around them, then at her again. He had his own reasons, but he didn't offer them up immediately, his tone cavalier, though he was a little surreptitious. She was acting like a surly youth. Which, he decided, she pretty much was. But he'd had to deal with as much with his mate, so he felt he was up to the challenge.

He was awfully persistent about being annoying, wasn't he? The dark lion pbviously wasn't clueless, as he'd already noted that she was being snippy. She might have been slightly more lenient if he were just one of those oblivious sorts of individuals - although they were their own special brand of annoying - but that was clearly not the case.
"Being alone," she grumbled. "Now is there something you actually need, or do you just not have anything better to do?"

This kid wasn't being very cute at all. Unzu's frown deepened and he quirked an eyebrow at the lioness he was walking with. He didn't think he quite deserved the acerbity, but he didn't want to argue and alienate her, so he decided to back off marginally.
"You know, it doesn't hurt to be friendly sometimes," the dark-furred lion shrugged at her. "I thought perhaps we might understand each other a bit." He didn't venture anything further, wondering if he should just toss in the towel and leave her be, since she clearly didn't want to speak with him. So he didn't make it necessary for her to, yet he didn't put any further distance between them, waiting but not waiting for her response. He just happened to be going the same way as her.

"So? I don't want to be." Hal-shikasta laughed. Like he or anyone else would ever understand! What a stupid thing for him to say. Who'd let him in, anyway? They needed some kind of idiot test.

Unzu looked away as she laughed at him, flicking his ears back, pinning them to his skull. He went on for some time without saying anything, apparently thinking, keeping pace with her, and looked up, not even looking at her.
"Are you never lonely?" he asked her, glancing over at the youthful lioness. He quirked an eyebrow at her, wondering how she would respond.

The pale lioness snorted derisively. "No. And even if I did, it wouldn't be any of your business."
She'd rather be a little cold when she slept than be constantly bothered by lions like this one.

"You're telling me you never feel lonely?" Unzu snorted derisively, tossing his head. "I think you are a liar. Or perhaps you are just young and foolish. You would not have come back if you did not feel loneliness," he accused her, then fell silent, his face falling into a neutral expression, his eyes flashing, navigating the swamp by feel, his full attention on the lioness beside him.

"Well I think you're mistaken," Shika snapped back, lip curling the reveal her fangs. "You don't have any idea who I am, and you shouldn't pretend like you do." She'd had enough of this, thank you very much! At the very limit of her very limited patience, the white lioness turned and dashed off.
((Sorry, I fail. ;; A wrap post for you, finally.))
