You know, I don't get why they don't name it "Kung Fu Kid".
I mean really? Filmed in China. In the movie the kid moves to China. And the master is a Kung Fu Master. So how in the world did they not, in some point in their filming change the name to "Kung Fu Kid"?

I was wondering the same thing. They keep talking about kung fu in the movie (or what I've seen of it through previews) and yet it's still The Karate Kid. I wonder if it's ignorance on their part or if it's simply because it is a remake of the original Karate Kid. Either way, I'll still go see it because I love Jackie Chan and Will Smith (and so Will's kid by default! lol).

They could have done a slightly different idea that still had to do with Kung Fu. crying It's just off when you have Karate Kid with Kung Fu instead.

...We are all granted wings... I agree. I didn't quite notice it until you mentioned it... but it really makes no sense. I think that maybe the producers are trying to ride the success of Karate kid with the title, but really if it has Kung-fu then that make little sense. :/ I love Jackie Chan, but even I think this is going to be a huge mistake. There's no way he can surpass Pat Morita in my opinion. It's just not the same. ...But we must wait for the opportunity to fly...

I totally agree. I was wondering why the remake is set in China, labelled "Karate Kid", stars Jackie Chan, and Will Smith's kid is learning "Kung fu" instead of "Karate".
Better name should just Kung fu kid and make it sort of a homage to Karate Kid.

ll flash ll It is called Kung fu kid in china,America just named it karate and ruined it. I think they are doing it to appease fans of the original Karate Kid series and try to lure them into the theaters.

They're doing it for the same reason they make any other remake: They have no other ideas. So they make a remake of an older movie, keep the title, and edit the story a little to make it more "modern" or something. But yes, they are hoping to get the old fans back in for this one.

It's called "Karate Kid" because the kid initially knows Karate but too little to defend himself. So he begins to learn Kung Fu.
I also thought the same thing, as to why the movie was called Karate Kid, but when I found out the kid actually knew at least little Karate, then it was okay. I don't think the producers would have been that stupid.

I agree! If they want to "remake" the Karate kid, it should be with the original concept.
I am glad some others feel the same way! heart
