The sun shone down brightly in the sky as soft fluffy white clouds passed like wisps. Helki stood in a sun speckled clearing near her den. Fea pecked away among the grasses. Helki snorted and trotted off towards the beach on her island home and stretched upon the beach.
As the waves lapped gently at her hooves she looked out towards the main land wondering if she dare venture there again. The emptiness of her former mate's departure and her offspring from the nest was still fresh and even the companionship of the feathered creature called Fea could not fill that void.
Helki unfurled her wings a bit as she pondered the pros and cons of venturing forth to find a new someone to fill her life with laughter, love, and happiness again...or even just an adventure. Her vivid pink eyes took in the sights along the far beach and in a blink of an eye her wings swung out. In a gust she was airborne and soring over the whitecapped waves of the salty sea heading towards the mainland and whatever waited there...

Zephyr twitched his colorful wings as he browsed in a forest clearing near to where his family lived and near to the beach. Beside him, Miltiades was doing his very best to sit tight and do nothing to remind Zephyr of the disappearance of Justice, Zephyr's first love. They hadn't been together long, but it didn't change the fact that Zephyr had had feelings for her. The unexplained disappearance would have been difficult for anyone to deal with, and at least the family had done their best to look for her, to no avail.
Zephyr sighed softly as he chewed, trying to block out his few memories of Justice. She had disappeared two full seasons ago, and it was high time he moved on, even if the rest of the world was being careful about even reminding him of her. He swallowed his current mouthful and walked in the direction of the beach, lifting his white hooves carefully over the plants and through the pale, hot sand of a summer's day. He took some care to lift his delicate peacock tail carefully so that he wouldn't have to clean all the sand and grit from it later. And his tail was so delicate and cleaning a tail like his when it had gotten sandy was a real pain that he didn't want to deal with later. Justice would have helped if she were still....
Zephyr tossed his head wildly. No. He needed to stop thinking of her and move on. Casting his gaze up and over the waters of the sea, he glimpsed a pale, shining figure skimming the surface of the water. So transfixed by what brightness and beauty he could discern at this great distance that he didn't notice Miltiades padding after him to sit in the sand next to his forefeet.

It wasn't long that she heard the wing beats of Fea pursuing her and she smiled to herself. But then her eyes took in the fast approaching beach and she faltered a bit. There stood a magnificent winged stallion with striking coloring and plumage, at his feet something brown and furring sat. This made her slightly unnerved and at the last second she turned to coast down the beach. With her great wings out she flapped and put her delicated gold hooves out to land in the white sand.
She tossed out her mane and glanced out to the sea. The orange and purple plumage of Fea was clear as she coasted the updrafts of the wind and landed gracefully on Helki's back. With Fea out of the sky, Helki's attention was once again back on the stallion up the beach from her. She tilted her head in subtle curiosity, but a sudden unsure shyness came over her and she lowered her head and pawed at the sand.
She had too many issues with stallions. After her terrible accident from the storm several months ago and the journey she took to find home again......and what she endured....Now she felt foolish for having left the safety of her island home.
Helki pondering just taking off again to her island but the stallion had wings too. She glanced towards the treeline of the main land and pondered what would happen. Another look at the stallion caused her curiosity to rise again and she took a step towards him...

Zephyr continued to watch, cocking his head. The mare down the beach from him was absolutely a marvel to behold, white, gold, and a misty blue with two pairs of wings, crystal antlers, and a tail he'd never seen the likes of in his whole life, which was almost five seasons by now.
After standing transfixed for five whole minutes, he slowly and in an awed fashion strolled down the beach toward her. "Hello there, my Lady," he said awkwardly, knowing as he said this that this was not what his male relatives would class as a good pick-up line. In fact, it was all he could get out of his mouth at this point.
Some part of himself was hiding in the thickest thicket he knew of to hide his embarrassment at being so tongue-tied, another part was too amazed to do anything but stare, and a third part was attempting to sound like a cognitive, coherent, polite adult kirin. Obviously, it wasn't having much luck.
Miltiades was indeed fascinated by the pretty mare, but he was much more curious about the strange bird with the mare. He wanted to inspect it, but had a feeling both the mare and Zephyr would object to excessive curiosity, so he settled for scampering up onto Zephyr's head to watch the mare and the bird.

Helki had watched the stallion approach with slight apprehension. She wasn't sure of him yet and why should she be. He was a complete stranger. But he seemed at a loss for words when he finally spoke to her and she couldn't help but smile at him.
"Hello," she said to him in a rather melodious voice that it would seem only angels would have.
A movement near his hooves caught her eye as she watched the strange furry thing climb up to his head. It peered at her and at Fea, who ruffled her feathers at him and simpled stared back.
Looking back at the stallion who seemed in a bit of a daze, Helki raised her brows and cleared her thoat. "Well....my name is Helki and this is Fea. We live on that island just there," she said gazing out over the waves to the beautiful island.
Her eyes gazed at Zephyr once again and she gave herself the chance to look over him at close range. Handsome and colorful. He didn't seem violent or prone to negative behaviors...well in the short few minutes they have had contact anyway.

"I'm Zephyr," Zephyr responded, the part that was trying to sound mature finally coaxing the awed part of his mind into a cognitive state. "The kitsu on my back is Miltiades. We live with my family deeper into the forest," he said, inclining toward the forest with his head.
A few awkward minutes of silence passed while he attempted to find the next right words. Unfortunately, all that successfully came out was, "I'm sorry I'm staring at you. It's just that you're so beautiful, and even though I've seen winged kirin before, like my family, I've never seen anyone with more than one pair and I've never seen anyone with glass antlers like you."
Smooooooth. Reeeaaalll smooth. He could just hear Clifton and Vinny's sniggers, and his dad's barely suppressed laugh in his mind's ears. He'd never hear the end of this, even if they were gobsmacked in seeing her themselves.

Helki smiled at him and nodded a hello to Miltiades. So he had a family that lived in this forest. Hadn't come across any kirin that looked like him, but she wasn't one to wander off into unknown territory. Especially after he left. She now kept to herself on the semi large island with no one else but a feathered creature she had found.
Fea chortled and bobbed her head, tilting it to one side and eyeing the strangers.
Helki shifted uncomfortably as he began to blabber about her overall appearance. She looked down and pawed lightly at the sand. She blushed at him calling her beautiful. She hadn't heard kind words in a long while.
"Well...thank you. I have not seen others like myself either except for my son. And my parents...well I look nothing like them." She looked up at him. "I've never seen a kirin like you. Your so vibrant in color and your tail....I've only seen birds with tails as flamboyant as that....Anyway....I don't meet many others. I haven't even seen my children in a long while...Do you have children?"

Zephyr ducked his head. So she had kids. Shards. So she probably had a mate. "Uhhh, no, I don't have kids." He looked away up the beach. "My mate disappeared from my family's small herd a couple seasons ago, and I haven't seen her since."
He was very quiet for some time, trying to force his memories of the brief time he'd known Justice to go away. He missed her, but it hurt more that she'd disappeared on him than the pain of missing her, if that made sense. He felt abandoned and lonely more than heartbroken, since he had known Justice for about a season before she'd disappeared.
He finally said, "As for my tail, all members of my family except for one of my nieces has a bird tail, though not all of them have this kind of tail," he added with a shrug. He liked the bit about how flamboyant his tail was and how vibrant his coloration...but the whole matter of having kids kind of stung.

She watched him with curiosity, taking in everything. Some say she was quite observant. Helki tilted her head and looked him over some more. He was handsome but it was always what was inside that counted first and foremost. "I'm sorry to hear about that...I can understand."
It was her turn to be silent for a moment. Her eyes stared at him but saw through him for a moment, as if she wasn't seeing him but something else. The moment passed and the expression cleared. She looked down. The reality was hard to face. "My mate left me. He didn't wait after a storm caught me and tossed me far away. My children where just foals then too. Now who knows what has become of them all."
Fea chorttled to Helki in a soothing sound and preened her peacock-like feathers.
