Well things had certainly changed since the pups had been born. Terreis hadn't been happy about being pregnant to begin it but the arrival of five sons seemed to have pushed her off the cliff of civility altogether. She barely payed them any attention - and sure they hadn't had the kindest of relationships to begin with...but there was a whole new venom in her voice when she yelled at him now. Something she seemed to do with increasing frequency. And now she was nowhere to be found - Derecho was pretty sure she'd run off to that feathered queen of hers - and a part of him wanted to chase after her, talk her into coming back but a larger part had decided that such a thing would need to be her decision. So he let her go. The bright spot to all of this of course were the pups - Derecho loved them with a ferocity that bordered on obsession. He doted on them, watching them while they played, while they slept, while they ate - the five bundles of fluff could do no wrong in his proud eyes, and maybe he lavished them with so much attention in an attempt to make up for their mothers apathy but he didn't know any other way to deal with this particular situation. They were sleeping at the moment and Derecho was lamenting his inner thoughts outside the den, head laying sulkily on his paws as he contemplated the way things were going.

Many things had changed in YMCA lately. Both Derecho and Merrill had pups running around that needed to be looked after, Corvus' pups were growing but still seemed to be afraid of most members and Aleu still hadn't managed to get Verse to stay still long enough for them to have a serious talk. Tomorrow, she told herself, though she knew it probably wouldn't happen, but she just couldn't give up just yet.
Having finished a recent border patrol Aleu found herself back at the dens, she could use a bit of a rest but with so many pups roaming around that was a sometimes impossible task. Spotting Derecho laying outside of his den Aleu moved to sit beside her brother. She knew Terreris had left for Antianeira - again, and who knows if or when she would come back this time. "You okay?" She asked as her tail curled around her paws looking down at her brother.

Derecho heaved a sigh as Aleu came to sit beside him, uncharacteristically of the typically proud and strong wolf Derecho found himself just wanting to bury his head in her shoulder and whine in a completely pitiful fashion. But that would be giving in to his fears, fears about Terreis and if she'd ever come back and fears about being a terrible father as his pups grew.
Of course if anyone would forgive him this breakdown it would be Aleu. Derecho himself however would never be able to forgive himself and so her merely flattened his ears and closed his eyes for a moment before replying "Have I made a mistake Aleu?" Of course as soon as the words were uttered he felt terrible for saying them and cast a glance towards the den to make sure the pups were still sleeping. "No...I got them out of the deal and they are perfect, I won't ever consider them a mistake" H stated firmly.

Aleu choose not to answer his question right away, as she honestly was taken a bit back by it. She would have never imagined Derecho asking such a question even given the situation he was in. Of course in that pause he himself answered his own question. Glancing back into the den as well Aleu looked upon the pile of sleeping pups, each of which showed a good deal of both their parents in the pelts. "No mistake there." She said she her attention returned to Derecho.
"Sometimes things don't go the way we planned or hoped, but no matter what happens there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel." Lowering herself down to lay beside Derecho she wasn't really sure what to say to make him feel better. "The most important thing is that you love them and that you are here for them...we all are."

"Really? you think so?" He asked his sister in a somewhat sarcastic tone - which he realized he shouldn't direct at her, she was only trying to make him feel better and it wasn't her fault he was in this situation. Softening his tone slightly he laid his head back down on his paws before speaking "What I mean to say is...look at our family, we turned out fine - bu we were raised by our mother...look what happened to our siblings who had the bad luck of being raised by our father? Clearly something went wrong there. What is pups just aren't meant to be raised by males?" He asked her in a slightly fearful tone.
Derecho would do his best by the pups, but he was only one wolf and there were some things he was worried were out of his hands.

Had that tone come from anyone but her brother Aleu would have been all over them returning an equal attitude. But she knew he was under a lot of stress and didn't mean to take it out on her. She could understand his concerns about the pups being raised at him, especially after what happened with their two siblings. Of course they had been raised away from the pack, away from helping paw and even now no one seemed to know just quite where they went or what had happened to them, only that they had returned quite changed.
"Father raised them away from the pack. You don't know what they did or saw that caused them all to come back the way they did." She let out a sigh. The situation revolving around all the current YMCA pups was a bit depressing. Corvus had his brood dropped off by an uncaring mother and they were struggling to live normal lives. Merrill was on her own raising her four pups as Tierehl had up and left after their birth. And Derecho was doing his best to take care of his five pups since Terreis didn't show up all that often. Must be something in that Antianeira blood she thought as all the pups had blood ties to that pack.
"Whether they were meant to raise pups or not you are doing the best you can. And there are plenty of females in the pack to help out." "Mommommommom!" Mavican yelled happily as she ran about the dens looking for her mother. She had found the coolest looking shiny thing ever and just had to show Merrill it. Had she been thinking she would have brought the shiny thing with her but in her excitement Mav had left it back in the trees. Now if only she could remember which den was the one she shared with her mother. She knew it was around here somewhere but the exact location eluded her memory.
Spotting two adults up ahead Mav ran towards them, a happy spring in her step. It was only after she got close to them that she realized the one looked very unhappy. Oh! She could help cheer them up! Tag wagging happily Mav bounded over to Derecho, stopping a few inches from him and bend her head down to look in his eyes, butt raised in the air. "Hey there Mr. grumpy face." She said in a tone similar to when some adults spoke to pups like they were too young to understand a normal tone of voice. "You know what make you happy again? Just wag your tail!" Glancing back at her own tail as it wagged swiftly back and forth before looking back at Derecho. "Happy tail make happy wolf! You try it, you'll see."

Derecho knew what his sister said did have some sense to it - I mean surely it wasn't just being raised by a male that made his siblings turn out so very wrong. Of course that was mostly assumption - and while he felt bad for hoping they had gone through some traumatic experience to make them that way he did so. Derecho didn't think he could bare watching his own sons turn out so angry and anti-social.
"Perhaps your.." He started to answer his sister when Merrill's purple blur came dashing in and starting yipping at him. Derecho lifted his head up and eyed the pup for a few moments..moons but she was a bouncy little thing and he was pretty sure if she wagged her tail any harder it might just fall off, it was practically making her entire butt shake - which despite his depressed state Derecho found somewhat amusing. "I forgot how to wag my tail" He told her in an earnest voice, as though he was desperately wanting to fix this wrong. "I fear I shall never be happy again unless...someone..." and he looked pointedly at the purple wolf "Teaches me how again.." Giving the pup a sad look he ticked gaze to his sister for a moment "Aleu has been trying..but she's not a very good teacher unless she' teaching you to sing" He added solemnly..because he knew it would irritate her.

Aleu's attention was drawn away by the sudden appearance of one of Merrill's pups. She wasn't sure how Derecho would react to the bubbly little puppy. Lifting her head up a bit she watched Mavican do her best to cheer Derecho up. It was quite a cute little display and Aleu couldn't help but chuckle at the pup. At Derecho's comment about Aleu being a bad teacher Aleu's eyes narrowed ever so slightly. "Perhaps you are just a bad student."
Aha! She knew she could help out. And when the big male asked her to show him how to wag his tail she jumped with joy - quite literally. Bouncing for a few moments Mavican had to force herself to focus on the task at hand. So coming to a stop she looked back at Derecho. "I show you how! I'm good teacher!" Puffing her chest out a bit she looked the two adults proudly. "Here what you do..." Turning so that she faced away from the pair so that they could more clearly see her tail Mavican was so excited to be helpful.
Oh look a butterfly! Suddenly forgetting that she was supposed to be teaching Derecho how to wag his tail she began to chase after the small insect leaping into the air trying to catch it. Tail wagged ferociously as she did so. Landing after another unsuccessful attempt to catch the butterfly Mavican frowned slightly. She just wanted to play with the little thing. Eyes scanned the area until they landed on two adult wolves. Hey! Maybe they could play with her. Bounding over to where they lay Mavican jumped up onto Derecho's back. "Why you so sad?" She asked as she hung off his shoulder trying to look into his eyes.

"Me?!?" He scoffed at his sister as though the very thought of him being anything but great at anything was absurd. He was well aware that this more then mot things tended to annoy Aleu - who was nearly or maybe even just as strong minded and willed as he was. It seemed to be a trait that ran in their family. Derecho wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing, moons only knew what he would do if all five of his sons turned out to be just as hard headed, stubborn and dominant as he was, given that Terreis was their mother - there was a pretty good chance that they would.
But on the other hand he could be thankful that forgetfulness did not run in his family he thought to himself as the pup ran off after being distracted by a butterfly. "Moon's she's worse then Merrill isn't she?" He remarked to his sister as the little beast came scurrying towards them, letting out a small 'oof' a she jumped on his back. "I just miss someone is all' He told the pup - it's not like she would understand the more complicated reasons behind his feelings.

Aleu rolled her eyes at Derecho. "Yes you." But her attention was more focused on the purple patchy pup who had forgotten what she was supposed to do and was now trying to catch a butterfly. "She is, but at least she seems to be happy about it." When Mavican came leaping onto Derecho's back Aleu let out a chuckle. The pup may be forgetful but she certainly made things fun and interesting when she was around.
Rolling off of Derecho's back Mav lay beside him for a few minutes considering his words. He missed someone huh? Well she had been here, and then left to play with the butterfly - so maybe he had missed her. With her tail wagging she stood up balancing on her back paws, one of her front paws resting on his shoulder. "I back now, so you don't need to be sad anymore!" Tipping her head she looked around Derecho at Aleu with a smile slathered across her maw, but her attention turned back to Derecho cause she was pretty sure he would be happy now that she had returned. "Hi!" She barked cheerfully at him as if this was the first time she had seen him. "I'm Mavican, who you?"

"I suppose" He remarked - and he did have to admit he had yet to see the little pup frown. How on earth was she going to function a an adult if she had such a short attention span though? Perhaps it would get better as she grew older...he hoped so as he pitied the wolf who had to try and teach her to hunt, or remain focused enough to do boarder patrols.
She's still a pups yet he reminded himself as she flung herself off his back and jumped up to proclaim that she had returned, chuckling slightly as he bumped the pup playfully in the chest. "And a good thing too" He told her "I was awfully tired of missing you" To which she replied with introducing herself. Derecho sighed slightly, she was a cute thing but after a while..tiring. "Yes we know your name Mav...and I'm Derecho and that's Aleu" He told her patiently.

Oh lord, Aleu wasn't sure how much longer Derecho could handle Mavican's presence. The pup was cute and funny, and as much as she knew Derecho loved pups she wasn't sure if he wished Mav to be around for much longer. And honestly Merrill was probably wondering where he scatter brained daughter was. "Where is your mother Mav?" She asked, hoping that the pup would at least remember that important detail.
Mavican let out a happy squeal when Derecho bumped her chest lightly. He was playing with her! Lowering herself down Mavican laid down between Derecho's front paws, lying on her back looking up at him. She let out a laugh and her tail wagged even faster now. "Of course you know my name, how could you miss someone you didn't know?" That was just a silly idea. As the other spoke Mav turned her direction to the one that had been introduced at Aleu. Where was mother? "I don't know." Her eyes ticked to Derecho and then back to Aleu. "Maybe she doesn't want to be sad like umm..." what was his name again? "...Verego." Yeah that name sounded right. And maybe if one wolf was sad than any other wolf around them could get sad.
