Lily sat looking over her sister, watching her rather intently. She looked so serene sleeping in the bed. The monitor showed a constant heartbeat and everything on the screen should no underlying reason for her to be in a coma. None of the new coma cases seems to have any reason to be in a coma. Some of the teenagers came in with the odd bump or bruise, but otherwise seemed in perfect health, aside from sleep deprivation, but the entire city had been suffering that hadn't they.
Lily turned looking too the other patients in the room, there was at least two coma patients to every room, more if they could fit. Lily frowned watching them sleep silently. It was so eerie, too peaceful, for a world turn upside-down in a matter of hours.
She turned to see a nurse come in, giving a small hello, before picking up the clipboard at the first bed and taking down notes, while looking at the machines and not the patient. It made Lily slightly angry. Even if they could not talk back or if they could not here her, Lily felt as though she should speak to them.
Lily could feel the tears brimming on her eyelids at the situation. There were so many coma patients, really the nurses hadn't time to speak with every sleeping patient. Lily knew that and still she could feel her heart breaking.
Her mind screams at her, 'What if they never wake up? Then what,' and her tears rolled down her cheeks.
Her minds continued to scream at her, 'It them, you know it is. It's their fault! Do you care! Do something! They did this!'
A soft hand on her shoulder startled her and she jumped from her thought, refocusing her eyes on the nurse, who just smiled softly at her.
Lily looked away for a moment before looking back to her sister.
"Rose," she said softly although her voice was shaky. "Rose," she said again, "the nurse is here Rose. Just taking a quick look over to make sure everything is okay. You hear me Rose, so far everything seems okay. You're going to be okay Rose. You will."
The nurse left the room though Lily hardly noticed; she slumped over her sister's covered legs. She cried loud, hiccupping sobs.
"I'm sorry Rose! I'm so sorry," she repeated again and again.
Another hand was placed on her shoulder before she was pulled from her sister and enveloped in a pair of strong arms. “Hush, Lily blossom,” said Aaron holding his daughter close. It’s not your fault my little one. Rose was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ssshhhh Lily, go to sleep my dear, you’ve had a long day.”
She could feel her mother’s hand running up and down her back while her father held her close. She could only cry harder, feeling somehow it was her fault. That she should have been there, that she should be doing something to save her sister. She cried for some time, before nothing.
Aaron and Alyssa looked between their two daughters, watching the pair. One they were unsure as to whether she would wake and the other they were unsure as to whether she could handle such tragedy. They both wanted to cry, break things, blame the world for their misfortune, but they needed to be strong for their family. Silently they sat holding hands, and keeping vigiliant watch over there dear ones.
