xxx TAG BATTLE

It is set in a random field, where there is vegetation dotted across it. There isn't too many hiding places one can hide in and it is mainly a battle for one's skills, not their ability to camouflage themselves.

Shizuka entered the area, moving to the center of the field and standing there, her eyes closed. She had been intending to test out the new strength of her 3rd Seat and help him train, thus she had invited him to come to practice with her for a little bit. While usually she was rather energetic, the last few late nights had taken its toll and she was tired. It would be hard for her to use her full complete power of her Bankai, most likely she’d only be able to get to the first few stages. Standing completely motionless, she muttered, “Linuen Frost, I wonder where you are.” She didn’t really want to have to chase after him or figure out where he was, so she might as well rest her eyes a little after all that reading she had been doing. He would come, most likely because she knew training would be good for him and he would want to train.

There was a brief ringing sound and Linuen Frost was now standing before his captain, Shizuka Hatomi. He smiled at her and then made another soft skip and he was now closer. The charm that was attached to his right ear gave off another soft ring, like a chime. He felt it for a second and then turned to Shizuka, giving her an apologetic look. "I'm sorry; it's my charm. A former captain of the Gotei 13 gave this to me as a remembrance of him." Linuen said, scratching his head and then turning a blush a pink. "I'm Linuen Frost, Shizuka-Taichou! I'm a new member of your squad, reporting!"

He smiled at her and then felt a rush of wind pass by him. He felt it deeply and thought it would not end by alas, they all pass by. He snapped out of his senses again when he realized that he was drifting again to nothingness; he was like this often since his death. But whatever happens now, he must maintain his focus. He had been distracted many times in countless trainings about the memories of his Sensei and he didn't like it at all. But could he blame himself? He truly loved that person and the sudden news shocked him.

He smiled again at Shizuka, blushing.

Shizuka lazily opened one eye and looked at Linuen. The ringing sound had alerted her to his appearance and she raised an eyebrow at the charm on his right ear. She had only seen that charm…and from what she knew, the man who owned that charm was…unfortunately dead. However, as he explained it, she nodded in comprehension. Her face was thoughtful as if interested by something. She appraised him, taking in his stance and noting the fact that he was blushing a little. Hmm. Fascinating. He seemed to be drifting in and out of things, snapping out of his senses when he realized that he had been drifting. Silence descended on the area for a while, as she remained motionless, barely moving a muscle. Finally, she seemed to suddenly come alive, her gaze directly trained on Linuen.

Slowly, she walked around in a big long circle around Linuen, as she spoke, “Linuen Frost. 18 years of age, weighs 64 kg and 180 cm tall. Shikai and Bankai have not been achieved yet. The academy results marked you as being your excellent marksmanship and skills in swordplay, although your Kido’s slightly below average. Luckily, Kido’s not something that is entirely necessary in Squad.” Her lips curved into a rare smile as she suddenly came to a halt, turning to face him. Her extra sense was telling her that everything she had learnt, from his information sheet that had been handed to her, was correct. “Unfortunately, Kido is not entirely something that I can help you with, since I’m not exactly too good at Kido myself. I’m sure that if you take the time to ask another Captain, they will be willing to assist you in that.”

She paused deliberately, catching her breath for a bit. “I am Shizuka Hatomi, which I am sure you already know by now, and I will be training you for now, honing and reinforcing your sword skills, hopefully maybe you might be able to achieve Shikai, and cultivating a strong mind. Most Shinigami neglect the idea of mental strength for the idea of physical strength and it is this that often leads to an enemy being able to overpower them easily.” In one deft movement, she deliberately drew her zanpakuto, letting the sun’s brilliant rays reflect off the shiny surface. With her other hand, she gestured towards Linuen for him to attack first, her hand automatically gripping her zanpakuto’s handle harder. An impish grin appeared on her face as she inclined her head slightly.

“Now…let’s see what you can do, shall we?”

Linuen looked at her with utmost anxiety as she said his physical and academy information; she certainly knew well. Heck, she might've memorized his information sheet with a glance. Anyways, he had nothing to hide to her and he was slightly taken aback when he felt she knew his Sensei from before; he was quite confounded by this for he knew that Shizuka was rather recent in the captains. Anyways, this did not stop her from being familiar with his Sensei. He loved him dearly and maybe he would ask her about it. However, he wondered if she knew him well.

He listened for her at a moment, nodding to her words in agreement. He knew that she was the best in Kido however she was going to train him in both physical and mental strength; he felt excited. But the moment Shizuka unsheathed her Zanpakutou, Linuen shivered in fear. He was overwhelmed by her presence in a snap and felt like she was going to dice him to pieces. But that did not stop him from drawing his sword too. He closed his eyes for a moment and asked for strength from his Sensei; he will guide him in this training and he knows it.

She gestured for him to make the first attack. "Yes, I understand, Shizuka-Taichou. I will try to attack you with the best of my strength." He exclaimed and then with a strong sprint, he was beside Shizuka. He drew back his sword for more momentum for his attack and then with a strong pull of strength, he slashed from her shoulders and downward with overwhelming strength.

Shizuka nodded vaguely, taking notes as he attacked her. He was not too bad, much better than she had expected. Then again, his scores from the Academy had been very good, so that was a reflection of his skills. His agility was pretty good, as far as she could tell. As he slashed from her shoulders and downwards with overwhelming strength, she used shunpo, arriving a short distance away. There was a cut down her shoulders, which was bleeding a little but it didn’t pose too much of a problem at the moment. Not bad. He was certainly not scared of hurting the opponent. There was no point in delaying any further if she wanted to drag his spirit out. “Rise, Getsuei,” she whispered under her breath. Her blade morphed, shifting so that it was invisible, except for a faint luminosity of the blade. She inclined her head slightly in Linuen’s direction, a smile hovering on her lips. “Now, Linuen, I’d advise you to try and drag out your spirit or else this battle is going to get nasty really quickly,” she told him. In an instant, it would seem to Linuen as if she completely disappeared as she had shifted to her own dimension. Running quickly, she shifted back to the normal dimension, appearing behind Linuen and slashing from the shoulders downwards, rather like his own attack on her.

Linuen's eyes widened with shock when in a blink of an eye, Shizuka was gone from his sight. He was sure that the blade touched her even though it was an extremely brief moment. Within another blink of an eye, she was now standing several feet away looking at him. His face was filled with frustration thinking about what he should do. He never really experienced fighting a person before using the skill called Shunpo. His Sensei used that often as he had the habit of appearing behind Linuen but he did not teach his student that claiming he was yet "too immature" to use it; Linuen was disappointed by this. Anyways, he had to focus on how he will attack Shizuka because she was obviously a captain and not to mention all captains know how to use Shunpo. This fight was going to be difficult just as he thought it would be.

He was deep in his thoughts thinking about what he would do when Shizuka activated her Shikai. Linuen was taken aback by this and was filled with astonishment. Why would a captain used her Shikai in such a short time?! Linuen will surely die. And above all else, he didn't get her words about 'dragging out his spirit' and how he will do it. Did she mean his Zanpakutou? How? Didn't getting a Zanpakutou is organized in the inner world? Oh, Linuen sure is in trouble.

But before he could think of another thought, he felt a brief presence behind him. He was able to gasp out for a single moment before Shizuka's blade slashed his shoulders and downwards. Because of the intensity of her attack, Linuen was blown several feet away from her and landed at the ground with a dull thud. He immediately screamed in pain and clutched his shoulders as it bled continuously. What will he do now?!

She darted away, wincing slightly as he screamed in pain. Why wasn’t he calling his zanpakuto spirit out? Oh. A thought struck her. Maybe he didn’t know about the zanpakuto spirits…since that wasn’t exactly a topic that they really taught there. For heaven’s sake, people didn’t even need to achieve Shikai to pass. That in itself was a rather annoying task, since she had to go through the process of teaching all of her new squad members every single time. Ah well. It was good practice for her anyway, to use her sword skills every once in a while. Tipping her sword upside down, she leaned on the hilt, the tip of her sword digging into the ground. Maybe it was time for a little impromptu lesson.
“Knowing your zanpakuto spirit is essential for achieving Shikai and Bankai. It is what makes each and every zanpakuto unique and different in abilities.” she informed him in a quiet voice, “And you can only achieve your Shikai, if your zanpakuto spirit chooses to give it to you when he/she reveals himself. That is when you will learn the first name of your zanpakuto. It can be achieved if the zanpakuto feels it is time, you need support in a very emotional time for you.”

“Or if there’s the possibility of you dying. You’d know all about that, wouldn’t you, Shizuka?” a different voice chimed in, cutting across Shizuka’s voice. A girl had materialized next to Shizuka, standing slightly shorter and with white-haired curls bouncing around madly. This girl’s lips curved into a mischievous smile as she appraised Linuen. Shizuka sighed, rubbing her eyes in frustration. Gesturing at the girl which had appeared, she said in an exasperated tone, “And this is my zanpakuto spirit, Getsuei.” Getsuei waved and raised an eyebrow in Shizuka’s direction, speaking softly but loudly enough for Linuen to hear, “Wow, he’s not bad, Shizuka. From what I can see, he’s got quite a bit of potential.” Shizuka nodded in agreement, “Hmm…Uh-huh, he does, but unfortunately, it seems like his zanpakuto spirit is a little bit stubborn. I could always injure him to the near-state of death, but that would take him a while to recover and there’s always the possibility that I might make a mistake and actually kill him. Could you see if you can drag his zanpakuto spirit out or tell her/him to drag him into his inner world, so that he can at least communicate with his zanpakuto spirit? Or I’ll have to take the first option.” Getsuei inclined her head slightly, and floated over to where Linuen was, stopping several metres before. She spoke in a voice, knowing full well that Linuen’s zanpakuto spirit would be able to hear her words, “Linuen’s zanpakuto spirit, whoever or whatever you are, I’d advise you to come out around now. You’ve most likely seen what Shizuka just did and trust me, that’s only a small bit of the power that she has. Unless you want your master to die and you also, maybe it would be a good time to materialize, m’kay?”

Linuen stared at Shizuka with utmost interest when she began to discuss about the properties of a Zanpakutou, its Shikai and Bankai. He was taken aback by this and of course he wanted to know his Zanpakutou's name and skills but he never thought he would be learning this early. If he couldn't keep up with his captain's standards, he might die training. No, Linuen must not die for his Sensei. If he died right now in just attempting to get a Shikai, then he'd die a second time in shame; he will not be able to face his Sensei in heaven if he were to die early. Linuen was not feeling too emotional today so the chances of his Zanpakutou giving his or maybe her name to him would be unlikely. That therefore concludes that Linuen might be taking the hard way even though he really don't like more pain. He just received his first blow from Shizuka and he could say maybe five more of those and he would be diced up to pieces.

But gathering all his strength, Linuen began to stand up. He took a gasp of pain when he was fully standing and gazed at Shizuka with blurry vision. One blow of her blade put him in that state and it was alarming than ever; will she be able to hold back when the real training comes? He wondered to himself. However, he can't let her just beat him up till he's unconscious. He must put up a fight to her.

Shizuka began to speak about his Zanpakutou maybe acting stubborn but he didn't mind at all. If his Zanpakutou didn't want to appear at this moment, then he has no choice but to continue the training. He must be able to keep up with Shizuka or he dies in that place. He tightened his grip with his katana and then straightened his posture, ready for an attack. But before he could do his first move, Shizuka's Zanpakutou materialized before him. She gave off the same of his captain albeit in a more creepier manner and form; Linuen found himself trembling with fear. With a short swift movement from Getsuei, she was now beside him and then whispered some words at Linuen. The words Getsuei said to him rang deep inside him and felt like something began to stir up deep inside him. He didn't have any idea what it was but things were getting creepier by the moment that passes.

"There is no way I'm dying here!" Linuen yelled at the top of his lungs and then with a short sprint, he dashed forward to Shizuka. With a strong slash of his sword, he aimed a vertical slash in front of him and adding up the momentum of his sprint, the attack had tremendous strength with it. Now that his Zanpakutou had the least chances of showing up, Shizuka might have no choice but to beat him up. And considering her strength, he might not be able to survive for the day. But he had to try to fight for himself then.

She had been pondering what she should do next, so wrapped up in her thoughts that she barely noted the fact that Linuen was charging towards her. Her zanpakuto spirit noticed though, and Getsuei in a flash appeared beside Shizuka, whispering in her ear,
“Watch out, he’s attacking. He’s not down yet.” Shizuka’s eyes focused and she had barely enough time to draw her zanpakuto out, shift to the side and half-block the attack. Only half of the damage had been diverted and now Shizuka had a massive long cut across her shoulder, where a cut had been before. Damn it. Blood trickled out of the wound, even though it was not as severe as Linuen’s wound. Eugh. Her momentary distraction had been enough to make an opening for him to attack her. Using shunpo again, she darted away to a safer place. She needed to think for a short while. With her abilities, she probed his mind for memories and read his emotions. His emotions were not exactly overwhelming like it would be needed for the Shikai to be released. “Did your words work?” she quietly asked, looking at nobody in particular.

“No, not really. All it really did was stir his zanpakuto spirit awake, but whoever he or she is, they’re pretty stubborn,” Getsuei materialized beside her, as Shizuka thoughtfully glanced at Linuen. Shizuka repressed a groan, although she could not stop the grimace from appearing on her face. “I guess there’s nothing left to do. I’ll just have to take the risky first option,” she muttered, annoyed by the fact that she would have to injure her own third seat. Shizuka had been about to move quickly and attack Linuen when Getsuei said, “Wait one second. There might be another solution.” Shizuka raised an eyebrow, but kept silent, allowing Getsuei to continue in whispers, “You were reading his memories of his Sensei, the late Fourth Squad Captain.” Shizuka frowned in confusion until her eyes lit up with understanding. She scowled at that idea also. “Do I really have to? I don’t know how much it might take a mental toll on him. People have really weak minds sometimes.” she mumbled under her breath, not wanting to do that. “It’s either that or there’s the risk of him dying. The mind can always be repaired but the body can’t be. Anyway, you can monitor him emotionally and stop it if it’s too much,” Getsuei replied. Shizuka nodded, making up her mind and Getsuei faded away.

In one swift movement, she moved closer to Linuen, wincing slightly. However, she did what she needed to do. With her Shikai, she could control emotions and force the other to feel something. That was exactly what she was going to do now. She drove grief and pain of loss into Linuen, which she had felt when Kei had died and the overwhelming emotions had overtaken her. It was a dangerous thing to do and to be on the safe side, she slowly increased the input of grief and pain of the loss a little bit by little bit. Rearranging her face into a hard and cold expression, she narrowed her eyes. This was necessary, no matter how painful this was for Shizuka herself, if she wanted to truly help Linuen.
“Now…these emotions are what the others felt…after your Sensei died,” her voice was a mocking tone, as she needed to rile him up and make him emotionally drag his zanpakuto spirit out.
She moistened her lips and forced herself to say the last most cutting words that she could find at the moment, with the most spiteful and hating voice she could find.

“Honestly, I don't see why they wasted so much time grieving. He was a weakling and weaklings like that should not deserve to be able to live.”

The moment the emotions surged deep inside Linuen, all he could was scream in agony and despair. Linuen immediately fell at the ground screaming as if in great deal of pain. The emotions he felt was far worse than he felt during the times when he grieved for his Sensei, it was too much to handle. He shivered across the ground, reaching out to Shizuka for the emotions to stop. His katana lay several feet away from him and he had no strength to cling on to. From time to time, he caught glimpse of Shizuka and he hoped that she saw his pain and cause her to stop. However, she did not stop.

Linuen continued to shiver at the ground and began to see the pains of other people besides him. He saw Kei Aoi dying before his eyes, his bloody body falling at the ground. He saw the enemy that struck him many times before and the other woman who fought alongside his Sensei. The emotions kept rushing in and out, so hard to constrain. Linuen felt like dying. Moments after this torture, tears were now gushing out of his eyes and Linuen began to scream louder than ever.

It was only a single moment when the Linuen's katana flung towards Shizuka's direction with extreme speed hardly anyone could see it happening.

She diverted her eyes from Linuen, even though she could still hear him screaming in the background. This was necessary. If he wanted to avenge his Sensei’s death and become stronger, there needed to be a sacrifice. It was either this or she had to kill him slowly one at a time. The emotions were entirely at the level that they would totally damage his brain or wreck his emotions forever, but she had to continue, at least until his zanpakuto spirit would reveal itself. As he started crying, she was about to cancel her control over his emotions, but at that moment in time, his katana flew in her direction. Luckily, this time she was paying attention and she managed to shift to a different dimension before it struck it. “Looks like your bet paid off.” Getsuei’s voice rang in the silence, although there was no sign of the white-haired girl in sight. Shizuka used her shunpo and in a hurry, she shifted to Linuen’s side.

If he wanted to kill her so be it, but this was her problem and she was going to rectify it now. Carefully removing the effects of the grief and pain over losing his Sensei, she instead changed the emotions she fed to him, instead giving him more positive feelings. She slowly added the idea of happiness, of what she had gleamed of the more positive emotions about Kei – about his selflessness and about the fact that he was a very nice person. She drove the feeling of calmness, joy, happiness and even love – all the emotions of a life well spent and a loss greatly known. As she did this, she lifted Linuen so that she was half-cradling him, much like a mother would treat her own child. Her own eyes were full of tears and pain, as she had experienced what Linuen had felt and had felt that way many times over. “I wouldn’t advise trying to kill me now, Linuen’s zanpakuto spirit. It was you and you alone that drove me to this. If you had been less stubborn like the others in revealing yourself, I wouldn’t have to go this far. I never wanted to go this far.” she quietly said, blinking back her tears as she wiped away Linuen’s tears with the sleeve of her own Shinigami uniform.

The very moment the katana landed at the ground with a sharp thud, Linuen felt dizzy and sleepy. For a short moment, he saw Shizuka standing beside him and then he fell unconscious after that. He felt as if someone lulled him to sleep in an instant. But before all the drowsiness he felt, he was certain something cold touched his cheeks. Then, he closed his eyes and drifted into the darkness.

"You have a rather dirty skill, onee-chan." A voice of a small girl said out of the blue. "It's really disturbing... manipulating emotions and the mind; I find that sickening. Depriving of the human mind to control his own emotions and wallow on those you choose." It was only that moment when a girl appeared out of thin air and stood behind Shizuka. The girl was awfully pale and had a cold expression on her face. Her eyes were as blue as the sea while her lips were as red as blood. She wore an unusually pretty scarf that was in light-blue of color. She looked at Shizuka with an irritated face.

"I am...., Linuen's Zanpakutou." She said without changing the tone of her voice. All of the sudden, a spear materialized in her hands and then she pointed it at Shizuka. "Frustrating people in their emotions really disturbs me, Taichou." She added and then with a snap, she glared at Shizuka.

Shizuka raised an eyebrow as Linuen’s zanpakuto appeared and started rebuking her. A dirty skill? Well, definitely, Getsuei would not be pleased by that statement. On cue, Getsuei materialized beside her again, standing between Shizuka and Linuen’s zanpakuto spirit. Her face was angry, but she did not explode, merely crossing her arms and glaring at the other zanpakuto spirit. It was interesting to see what was going to happen. “Controlling emotions is terrible?” Getsuei’s voice was cold and harsh, “Then tell me, what do you call people’s abilities if they can inflict physical pain and damage on others, or someone else who can influence the senses and then deprive, as you mention, the other person of their ability to control their own senses? There are many more terrible things in the world, and don’t tell me that you’ve never seen them. They’re everywhere around you and if you were not looking, that is your own fault.” Shizuka sighed and rolled her eyes. Her zanpakuto spirit was really irritated when it came to people mocking or labelling her abilities negative things. “Stop, Getsuei, it is true in a way. I shouldn’t have put that all upon him, not all at once.” Shizuka muttered to Getsuei, who had not stopped glaring in the other girl’s direction.

“Like you said, you did this only so that Linuen would achieve Shikai and for his...stubborn zanpakuto spirit to finally come out.” Getsuei retorted quickly, her gaze not moving from the other girl’s face. Shizuka groaned. When Getsuei was in that sort of mood, it was literally impossible to change her. Anyway, it seemed like Linuen had drifted into unconsciousness at the most crucial time, when he could finally talk with his zanpakuto spirit. She lightly brushed her fingertips over his cheeks, to attempt to wake him up. “Come on, wake up, Linuen. It’s about time you met your zanpakuto spirit.” Shizuka whispered under her breath, not concerned about her own safety as the moment since she knew that Getsuei would warn her beforehand and she would have enough time to shift to the other dimension. She lightly tapped Linuen’s forehead several times, hoping that he would wake before his zanpakuto spirit left.

Alesthat glared at Getsuei for the longest of time since she materialized in front of them. She said, "I will not change my opinions regarding your skills, Zanpakutou. I will show myself when I see that this man here is fit to use my skills. I may not be the strongest of all of the Zanpakutou but I can feel when he is capable of handling me and right now, I don't see him as one." She said in a cold tone. She waved her spear and then in a blink of an eye, Linuen was now lying in front of Alestha. "I can't... give it to him this early! HE WILL DIE!" she yelled at the top of her lungs. A single tear fell of her eye and then she turned to look at Shizuka.

"If he handles my powers too early, this will happen..." Alestha began and then put her hands over Linuen's chest. Slowly, Linuen began to freeze, his body turning to ice in a matter of seconds. His breathing slowed and cold smoke began to come out of his mouth. Then, she stopped. "But what do I know of Linuen? He is such a strange creature... even his Sensei fears him in some way."

There was a soft swish of air and Alestha was now gone. Linuen's katana lied beside him while he slowly woke up to his senses. He shook his head in confusion and then looked at Shizuka and her Zanpakutou. "It's cold..." he said and then shivered.
