He was so close to his coming-of-age ceremony he could feel the vibrations of the backlash in his bones. He hadn't found his spirit animal yet. It was a heavy weight on his mind, and as it pressed down he grew quieter and quieter, even around Quin. In a rare reflection of his puphood, Kevarian had wandered from the main dens without telling anyone and wandered as far into the quiet forest as he could. His paws carried him down soft slopes of hills and through trees dusted with the freshly-budded leaves of spring. The loudest sound out there was birdsong, and that helped him settle his mind into a peacefully blank state.

There was too much going on; he just needed a break. A chance to step away from everyone would hopefully give him some perspective. He had to find his spirit animal. He didn't know what happened if he didn't before the ceremony, but it couldn't be good.

Quin was a blessing, with his unique ideas brought from beyond the pack, and Var knew his secrets were safe in the heart of the black-and-white wolf. There was no way Var could tell his father; Kalain would... Var had no idea what he would do.

He passed a small stream and then paused and went back to take long, slow drinks from the water. Today was a day for himself--

No it wasn't.

His back stiffened slightly as an uncomfortable feeling of someone nearby washed over him. It was almost like they were breathing down the back of his neck, but when he turned his head there was no one there. He slowly stood straight and let his eyes sweep the recently-melted woods, the feeling sitting with him although he tried to dash it away. He hadn't heard, seen, or smelled anything yet to indicate another wolf and there was no other way to tell someone was around.

With a gasp, Mealla woke up: heart racing, head pounding and hair standing on end. It was just a nightmare... She put her head down as the details of the dream still danced around her eyes. Paws hitting the muddy earth with fear and urgency, chased by wolves she barely knew, soaked in rain and caked in mud, pure fear, and finally a wolf struck by lightening and lying motionless. She's used to this dream... It's all that she can remember of her parents. Her mother lay victim to the storm, and her father confronted the pack of hunters by himself to save Mealla's life. All she could do was run, and she continues to run to this day... wandering from place to place, and living off rodents and fish that wash ashore.

Mealla took a few deep breaths, and got her bearings. She had found herself a nice little patch of forest to rest in for the night: quiet, lush, and it didn't smell like it was anyone's territory. Remembering that there was a stream nearby, she gave a big yawn and a stretch and set out for a morning bath. As she got closer to the stream, however, she started to smell something unfamiliar. Before she even had a chance to interpret it, she caught sight of a wolf by the stream.

She froze. Besides her parents, who she remembers only from her nightmares, she has never met another of her kind. Ears pulled back and tail between her legs, she started to sneak away, but the loud snap of a branch under her paw rang through the quiet forest like a gong. There was no running away now: He had seen her.

Kevarian was so intent on shaking the strange feeling that it wasn't hard to catch the slightest sign of movement from something as large as a wolf. He tracked the female from the corner of his eye as she got closer, trying to determine her mood and where she was heading without being obvious, and forced himself to remain calm and relaxed as she froze. He couldn't believe it would have taken her that long to know he was there, but judging from her failed retreat, it was clear that that was the case. As an exceptional hunter for his pack, Var was good at tracking prey and the like. Visitors were no exception, even the ones who tried to be sneaky.

With her full attention on him, he had no trouble lifting his head and regarding her full on. He took in her emaciated form. This wolf was no threat it seemed, and certainly not strong enough to hold up in a fight against him, but he had seen animals close to dying put up quite a vicious struggle despite illness or bloodloss. The female cowering near him looked submissive, painfully so, and Kevarian found himself feeling compassionate, despite her trespassing on the Aves lands. She needed water and food. And some cleaning, for that matter. A lone, definitely.

For a few moments he stayed silent, making no moves to go near her. Then he slowly lifted a paw and set it a few inches back, the other paws following until he was a few steps back from the stream. He was purposely behaving slowly so he wouldn't spook her, and the lack of speech was for the same reason. He wasn't a talker usually as it was, but this time around he was worried that if he made any sound, even to offer her a chance to drink, she would take off running. She had that skittish kind of look to her pose.

So, despite the usual greeting lingering in his mind, he stayed silent and just watched her, his movements away from her an open message that he had no intention of scuffling with her. Her colors were bright, too much so for spring, but he imagined that in the summer they were not only a warning that she was dangerous-- all wolves were still predators-- but fairly decent camouflage as well. If she took the offer, if she came closer and lost that panicked look some, he would offer her his name and the name of his pack. If she wasn't a danger to him, there was no reason he couldn't help her find a meal or her way. Assuming she had a way, of course.

Mealla stayed eerily quiet as she tried to judge the wolf's movements and see his intentions. Her eyes stayed locked onto him, and her posture was low to the ground; ready to bolt at the first indication of aggression. However, despite a very tense minute or so passing, he didn't show any; in fact, he was backing away. Surprised and slightly confused by the wolf's actions, little by little Mealla took her guard down. She perked up her ears a bit, and walked slowly to the edge of the water, keeping her eyes on the male. Finally, she let down all of her guard and lay down next to the water, taking soft sips with her eyes closed. This move went against her instincts, but she simply figured that if she showed that she trusted him not to harm her, than he would be less inclined to take advantage of her.

The entire situation was lengthy and uncomfortably silent. After having some water and composing herself, Mealla timidly approached the male, awkwardly cleared her throat, and in a mousy and sweet tone she addressed the male- "I hope that my presence hasn't bothered you at all. I'm just passing through and I'll be out of your territory soon. My name is Mealla-" It's nice to finally have a use for my name she thought to herself, as she continued to try and assess the situation. She knew nothing of what to expect, and was therefore quite blind as to how this situation may pan out.

He watched her drink silently, not wanting to interrupt in case this was her first chance to drink in a while. There was no way to tell where she had been before she found the safety of the Aves lands. While he had a moment to think, he considered bringing her to a deeper stream for her to clean up in and then bringing her back as a visitor to the dens. He could ask Mother if she could stay a night or two, at least. Safety tended to be a situation that evaded lone wolves, so even a haven of a few nights might be good for her.

When she crossed the stream and came closer, his face briefly reflected surprise, but he quickly hid it and let her have her say. Everything she said confirmed what he had assumed, and he put a small smile on his face.

"You certainly haven't bothered me," he assured her, "But you are in the Aves pack lands. What brings a summer-colored wolf this far North?"

Submissive, definitely. Var disliked being the one to invite new wolves into the lands. It required talking, and he usually wasn't one for talking. He said what needed saying, and then... that was that. What else were you supposed to say? At least she was quiet enough that he didn't have to put up with keeping pace with a boisterous personality.

Mealla kept her submissive pose, more out of habit then out of fear. "North? Is that where I am?" She looked down, embarrassed that she didn't know where she was. "So that's why it's so much chillier... To be honest, I don't know why I'm here specifically. Fate maybe?" She gave a weak laugh at her poor attempt at humor.

Although it may have been obvious to him, she still didn't want to admit that she had been wandering since she was a pup. She didn't remember much from her life before, but she remembered her old pack's impressions of lone wolves. It was far from good.

"Listen, I'm sorry to have trespassed on your pack's land. You can let your pack leader know that I'll be out of the area as soon as I can, and that they have nothing to worry about. Please just... don't send them after me."

The request made Kevarian blink and he pulled his head back slightly. What? Another study of the wolf simply pressed the image of a beaten, long-term lone further into his mind. He was content being silent as he studied her, not too concerned with speaking just yet as he debated how to handle the situation. Backing away had been practically instinctual, but this was a bit more complex.

"Our pack is friendly to outsiders." Mostly true. "We would never chase you from our lands so long as you mean us no harm." True. Either way, there was no way for the lone to find a lie in his words. For Var, whatever he said came out sounding like the truth. It was the product of a long life of finding what people wanted to hear and giving it to them.

"If you need a place to stop for the day, you can stop here. So long as you don't start trouble you'll find that our pack is polite. Not everyone can help being a lone wolf." He met her eyes again. He wasn't usually overtly dominant, but it was easy with a serious submissive. "You don't look to me as if you had much choice in the matter."
