Wykla stands knee deep in lake water. Her pants, and old and much abused pair, were rolled up over her knees. An equally old shirt covers her torso; her hair pulled into a high ponytail then braided to keep it out of the way. She watches her bronze firelizard floating in the water near her legs. His wings stretched across the water help buoyant him as he doggy paddles around. He cheep and churbles happily.
She eyes him as she bends down to wet the sweetsand in her hands. Sure he was happy now, just wait til he found out what she had planned. As soon as the stuff in her hands begins to suds up she grabs the flit and starts to coat him in soap. Boreal squeaks in surprise as his mistress grabs him. Squeaks turn to happy hums as she pays attention to him. Wykla chuckles and sets to soaping her little flit with a will. This was turning out much easier than she'd thought. After she got him clean she could give him a good oiling.

Mercy had found she enjoyed a good walk by the lake whenever she got the chance, which might not be as often as she would like but she couldn't complain. After the initial shock to her system Weyr life had represented she'd found herself settling in pretty well.
Humming a tune - even though she wasn't really musically talented - Mercy meandered along the shoreline, pausing as she caught sight of a girl bathing a flit, the little beast didn't seem to be complaining much, in fact it looked like he was rather enjoying the attention. Mercy hadn't met this girl yet, which wasn't all that surprising considering how many people were in the weyr...and how busy those people were kept but she wasn't one to let opportunities go to waste. "Hello there!" She called out cheerfully.

Wykla hears the greeting and straightens up in surprise. She turns towards the voice; Boreal dangling in her hands. Staring a moment before manners kick in and she blinks. "Hello." Looking curiously at the girl, she wonders where she might have seen her before. Did she?
Well Boreal was clean enough for now. She bends down to set the flit into the water. "Go rinse off well Boreal. Then when your done I'll oil you really good." Boreal gives a happy cheep and paddles into deeper water to rinse off all the suds. His mistress really did use too much, but she enjoyed it. That made ok so he didn't mind.
Wykla splashes back towards shore slightly away from the other girl so as not to get her wet if she didn't want to be. Once out of the water she walks over. "Hi again. I'm Wykla, I don't believe we've met." She smiles, trying to be friendly. Behind her is a pile of towel and a bottle of oil in the sand.

"Mercy" She told the other girl with a cheerful smile "I think I might have seen you at the hatching? But we haven't actually met no" she continued fairly certain that th other girl had been there - she looked familiar anyways. But then maybe she'd just seen her in the halls somewhere - ah well Mercy was sure the other girl would set the record straight if that were the case.
"Is your flit friendly?" She questioned conversationally - there were quite a few running about the weyr and not all of them were particularly welcoming to strangers. If she was being honest Mercy would have to say she hadn't paid much attention to the little beasts before coming to the weyr but they'd been steadily growing on her since then.

Wykla nods. "Yeah it was my first time standing. Were you a candidate then? Did you Impress?" She seems curious. A quick glance assures her Boreal is getting all the suds off with his vigorous splashing.
She giggles, "Most definitely friendly. If you wanna come sit with me I'm sure he'll let you pet him." She turns back and strides over to the towels. Bending to pick one up she speaks conversationally. "I have to keep him well bathed and oiled otherwise his hide itches and cracks. He loves it thought." She smiles fondly and sits down. "Boreal! C'mon get dry and meet Mercy."
Reluctantly the bronze exits the water. He flutters water-logged over to his mistress and lands on the towl in her lap.

Mercy smiled but shook her head "No..I wish though, but it was my first time as well and I've been told lots of people don't impress their first time out." Which was pretty much parroting what she'd been told by another after the hatching - but it was meant in the best of intention. There was always next time right? Seemed like good enough advice even if it had been bittersweet when given right after the hatching.
Since she didn't have anything else she needed to be doing and Mercy rarely gave up the chance to get to know someone she followed Wykla over to the towels and took a seat as the bronze fluttered over. "How long have you had him?"

Wykla starts to towel dry the flit as he hums with pleasure. "Well considering there were so many candidates and only so many eggs some have to be left." She smiles, "but if we all Impressed the first time there wouldn't be any body left to Stand for the next clutch right? Still it is kinda a let down not to Impress the first time. Like we failed somehow. It's not us I'm sure, just our dragon hasn't been hatched yet. Next time there's a clutch we should stand together."
With the flit completely dry she pours a small bit of sweet smelling oil onto her hands and begins to rub him all over. "Not long really. No more than four sevendays I think. Impressed him when Ralae and me went to check out a flit nest. Before the Hatching." Wykla makes a face, "I'm kinda glad I didn't Impress now. Can you image how hard it'd be with a baby flit AND a baby dragon." She giggles at the thought of both demanding to be fed at the same time. With the oil well spread and soaked into his hide she carefully lifts him to her arm. Holding him towards Mercy, "Boreal this is Mercy. Say hi."
Almost all of his eyelids close as his mistress dries him off. He loved when she paid attention to him. Spreading his wings so that she can get every part of him coated with the oil. His eyes are a contented blue, whirling very slowly. When she moves him onto her arm, he grasps with his paws but doesn't use his talons. Boreal turns a blue eye on the girl His wanted him to meet. He gives her a polite trill.

Mercy nodded "All very good points" She replied with a smile "That would be great" She added in reference to standing together"And next time at least we'll know what it's like to actually be out there, we can call this first try 'practice' ". She rather liked the thought of her dragon just not being born yet - it made it seem less like a failure and more like some as of yet unseen moment of fate.
"But yeah, the little mouths seems almost as demanding as the big ones" She agreed "But at least theres less of Boreal to scrub" She cooed at the pleased looking bronze as he trilled a greeting at her

Wykla looks thoughtful. "Practice. I like that. Certainly could have used that before the hatching." She makes a face remembering the wounds she received from the gold hatchling.
She gives a soft chuckle. "That they are. Can you believe he had me up and on the other side of the Bowl when the hatching started?" She shakes her head ruefully. Boreal gives His an innocent 'Did I do that?' look. "Oh yeah, a lot less to scrub. Still bathing him is kinda fun." She gives her flit a playful grin, "and now when I Impress You can help me scrub my hatchling."
Wykla looks at Mercy. "Say, have you ever thought about what color you'd like to Impress most? You don't have to answer if you don't want to. Just curious."

"Same here" Mercy remarked as she recalled the uncertainty and nerves that had plagued her, wondering briefly if that had played it's own part in her lack of impression. Surely a dragon wouldn't want t impress to a rider who was flighty and uncertain right? Mercy vowed to be braver next time she found herself on the sands - and she would have a while to work on that since she didn't think any of the reds or golds were due to fly anytime soon.
"I've seen them help allot of other riders" She commented while watching the flit "And I imagine when the time comes all the help you can get will be much appreciated" She continue with a slight laugh "I've seen a few of the candidates that did impress and they look like they've been run ragged lately" She remarked before pondering Wykla's question.
"Well I guess we both agree we'd be happy no matter what we impressed" She stated with a slight laugh "And an atypical would obviously be nifty, maybe a black? I've heard they're pretty mischievous...but I'd be just as happy with a sweet green"

"Well we got the first one under our belts." She grins. "Should do fine next time. We'll know what to expect."
"I think the dragons like them helping too." She makes a face. "It'd save a lot of climbing around, esply when the dragon got too big to reach over." She gives Boreal a scratch on his eyeridge which sends him humming with pleasure.
Wykla chuckles. "I bet they are! One going off is bound to set the other off. Kinda like a litter of puppies ya know? I'm sure it wont last long before the flit grows out of it. They do grow so fast." She gives a soft sigh.
She nods slowly. "Yes, I think your right. Whatever dragon finds me suitable would be more than enough for me. I've thought about it long and hard. No matter when I decided I've made up my mind, I get second thoughts. I just can't seem to pick. Do you think that affected them?"

Mercy chuckled slightly at the correlation between a pack of pups and the dragonets - she had to admit it was probably quite a bit similar, though the dragonets were quite a bit larger..and possibly a bit more demanding. But that was to be expected - look at how large they had to grow in such a short time!
"I've wondered that myself since the hatching - I mean i was pretty nervous and uncertain when I was out there and I've been thinking maybe that had something to do with it...but then they say the dragons just know who theirs is, so I would think they would be able to see past a bit of nerves..I dunno, I think next time I'll make sure I'm a bit more confident though. Just in case" She told Wykla with a slight nod.

Wykla looks at the other girl. "So where have you been staying since the Hatching? I don't remember seeing you around much. What chores do you get assigned?" She was suddenly curious about the other. If her questions seemed rude she didn't realize it.
Wykla nods slowly as she thinks about it. Boreal mimicing her movements with his head as he sits on her shoulder is comical. "Yeah I'm sure a lot of those who Impressed were nervous. They must have a way to see around it. Well next time I wont be. Then I'll Impress for sure!" Wykla was totally setting herself up for failure.

"In one of the Candidate bunks" She told Wykla, she assumed the other girl must be staying in something similar - but it wasn't all that surprising that their paths hadn't crossed until now, or at least that they hadn't noticed each other - everyone was kept pretty busy after all and there had been a crush of candidates before the hatching. no one had really had much time to get to know anyone.
"Mostly they seem to assign me to helping the Weyr healer, I was an apprentice healer before coming here and theres always enough scrapes and injuries to keep a healer busy...though they sent me up to help with the livestock one, that didn't end well..I don't have much experience with animals." she admitted "How about you? Where do you normally get sent?" she asked with a nod of encourage over her last statements "If we stand together then we'll be able to keep each other from being nervous even"

"Oh, it must be on the opposite end from me. Well since there's some open by me, you could switch if you want." Wykla makes a face. "Or maybe not if you like your sleep. Boreal tends to trill in his." She pets her flit gently.
Her eyes go wide. "Really? They have you helping the healer?" She digs her toe into the dirt. "You're lucky. Must be nice and easy." A long sigh. "I get assigned glow changing, sweeping, and if I'm really unlucky..... The Kitchens." She shudders.
A small nod and a smile. "Yeah I think it would help to have someone to stand with. I'd like to stand with you next time. I was going to try standing with Ralae, but I couldn't find her in time. Then she Impressed so she wont stand anymore."
