I was trying to look for some home made shampoos. I came across this NO POO theory. Where you just DONT use shampoo confused The logic is that your hair works in a negative feedback system. The more you strip it of oils, the more it produces. So instead you refrain from washing your hair. I don't really understand if I'm suppose to continue rinsing my hair or not. It's also been said that when you NEED to wash your hair, use dilute baking soda and if you need to condition use dilute vinegar, but basically a minimalist approach.
I'm trying it. It's not as bad as I thought. I haven't washed my hair in 3 days and it doesn't feel greasy at all. 3 nights ago I washed with baking soda and conditioned with dilute vinegar. I thought the vinegar worked well as a conditioner and like I said, so far no icky effects.

Bob Marley supposedly had like 4 kinds of fungus growing in his hair when he died.
Think on that.

As long as you rinse your hair regularly, I think you're fine. My lover doesn't really have the best hygiene and rarely shampoos his hair but it looks and feels fine.

There are a lot of variations to that Bob Marley story usually concerning colonies of lice but it turns out it it's just an urban legend which has never been substantiated.
That said, I don't use the no soap methods because my hair is quite oily and smelly when I go more than a day without washing and I don't want to deal with that. I just use sulfate-free shampoos.

I use a mix of Dr. Bronner's liquid soap with baking soda. Works great.

once a week i rub baking soda paste into my hair and rinse with apple cider vinegar. it cleans my hair wonderfully without stripping it of natural oils, and my hair smells more like apples than vinegar afterward

I think I'm going to try this! I think I read somewhere that you can put lemon juice on your hair too and that will make it cleaner... but I also read that if you put lemon juice on your hair it will lighten your hair...any ideas?

Short Melancholic I think I'm going to try this! I think I read somewhere that you can put lemon juice on your hair too and that will make it cleaner... but I also read that if you put lemon juice on your hair it will lighten your hair...any ideas? the lemon juice lightening your hair is very mild and only works if you sit out in the sun with it in your hair until it drys. I use Aubrey Organics Shampoo & conditioner this stuff has no harsh chemicals and is vegan. well at least the honeysuckle kind i buy is. hell, this stuff wouldn't hurt you if you ate it, and that's the way to go. as for the no 'poo. I believe it will take a couples weeks before you see good results. your hair is going to get oily, but only so much and then it will slow down and your scalp will slowly stop producing so much oil. then with a daily rinse it should be back to "normal" oiliness.

I just don't wash my hair every day. It takes 3-4 days for it to get noticeably greasy. I do shower everyday though, so on non wash days I put it up cuz if it gets wet and I don't condition, then it feels like straw.
I tried the ACV thing and I really like it, though I can't use it often because I have colored hair and I don't want to ruin the color. Thanks for the tip Strega Mama!

[Kegan] Bob Marley supposedly had like 4 kinds of fungus growing in his hair when he died. Think on that. Do you have any sources on that claim ? I've met several people with deadlocks and I've never heard them complain about lice or anything like that.

My husband has be no poo for a year or so now. The first three weeks were kinda nasty- the whole negative feedback loop, but his hair is softer than mine is (I use some clarifying shampoo stuff 'cause I swim). He rinses his hair every day, scrubs his scalp down, and when it was crazy oily he brushed his hair out A LOT because it moved the oil from the scalp and made it more even. I keep wanting to go no-poo but it is hard for me to find a good 3-week period to not go out in public smile I get a week in and my hair is so funky I cave.
