"So...you really like the seaside? Why?"
One of the first things that Filanth and Tiepet had done once it was clear they were somewhat free for the day was take themselves down to the shore, the beach rather warm and inviting with the better weather. Filanth said she wanted to go because she had never seen the waters before (which was very true) and Tie felt like it might be a good idea to try and get out of the barracks. She was not allowed to take her dragon amongst the herdbeasts, it would greatly upset them, so taking her to the shore was the best idea and the easiest as well. Tie liked being outdoors instead of being cooped in, and the two flitters that swirled over Filanth's head seemed to be in high agreement.
Another thing Tie was so thankful for was Filanth's open love of the two flitters and their instant acceptance of her. Even Caine, who normally spat at everyone, had loved Filanth and taken to her as though she had been with him from the moment he shelled. The fact he wasn't unhappy was a boon and everyone was taking advantage of that as they sat in the warm sands.
I like the seaside because it is quiet, peaceful. There are dolphins here, and more of my little cousins. Someday we will meet them.
"How can you be so sure?"
The timid shepherd pulled her knees to her chest, waiting for an answer. Her only response was a snort from her dragon and the sounds of the surf and tide rolling together.

Their free day had dawned bright and clear, and as soon as she'd been able, Inaari had abandoned the Weyr with Ianath, much to the mild disapproval of the dragon. Mine, why must we leave? There are things that can be done in the Weyr! Her dark-haired partner barely stopped while shucking her braid up around her head in a coil, pinning it deftly to shade her freckled neck from the sun. There were a few places that burned yet, and that was sadly one of them. Dragon and girl both didn't need to be peeling! "No way Ianath! I can't stay cooped up here anymore. We get a free day to do whatever we want, there's no duties today. We're going to go swimming. Wouldn't you like to have a giant pool to swim in? I promise, you'll love it! All that salt will make your hide gleam beautifully, and everyone will remark about what a lovely and healthy gold you are!" It wasn't quite entirely a bribe, the salt would do wonders for the gold hatchling that everyone seemed so keen on.
This had indeed mollified the dragon and so she ambled down the beach with her rider, frolicking in the waves with a child's abandon. Inaari was joining her, skirts kilted up about her waist as she kicked water about and giggled. She didn't even see Tiepet, too wrapped up in Hers, who suddenly chirped and bugled a greeting. It is Filanth and Hers, Inaarimine! We should join them! She remembered this girl from the Hatching Feast, the one she'd had to apologize profusely to when Ianath had all but ordered her dragon out of the way. This made her slightly hesitant, but the queen would brook no hesitation and smiling in what Inaari hoped was a friendly manner, she started over towards the other Weyrling.
"Uhm...hi! Sorry, are we intruding? I was trying to get out and get Ianath to come with, so I figured she'd like the beach. There's a lot more though. If we're in your way that is! Otherwise it'd probably be nice for the dragons to play you know? Ah...hi! Inaari." Embarrassed at the awkwardness of her introduction, the freckled youth held out a hand to the other girl and tried to keep her smile on as she blushed beneath the freckles. Ther didn't mind so much when she put her foot in her mouth, but not everyone was the same! Ianath bugled again, and the accompanying thought was entirely supportive of her rider's mild distress at sounding like a fool.

Ianath and Innari, Mine. Look up.
Tiepet's attention was grabbed by Filanth speaking quickly into her mind, the pair having fallen into silence for a bit and enjoying it, so she started slightly which in turn caused her two flitters to shriek at her emotions and dart away. She'd managed to regain herself by the time the young woman and dragonet were actually close enough and had started talking.
"I know who you are, and who your dragon is. Filly told me, and our Weyr makes sure that everyone knows who rides the Golds. You're very important to all of us."
Tiepet didn't reach out to take the extended hand, instead tightening in against herself, though she did smile politely and bow her head. Next to her Filanth moved from her semi-sitting, semi-laying position to a more formal stance, dipping her head somewhat respectfully towards the Golden dragonet. Her mind was somewhat swirled so Tiepet couldn't understand what exactly she was feeling without the Green saying anything.
Greetings, Ianath.
"I would shake your hand but I'm very dirty and smell bad of blood and fish. I don't want to make you gross."
The remains of a fish sat near the small girl's left foot, stripped roughly to the bone with its guts and other innards laying spilled around it. Likely Tiepet had gone into the water and somehow managed to catch the little creature (or else her flitters had done it) and she'd used her fingers to clean it out and give little treats to her companions and her dragon. Neither of the flitters had returned just yet, but that was alright.
"But...you and Ianath are...welcome to join us. We're watching for dolphins out in the waters. Filly says she likes them, but I don't know how she knows."

Shards, she'd put her foot in it. Inaari, not quite used to her new and lofty status, forgot that she was now the topic of conversation to the Weyr and everyone knew on sight who she was now. Very few women in the Lower Caverns had treated her differently as the Weyrling went about her chores down there after all, and T'ron certainly never changed. Biting her lip and laughing with an embarrassed edge to it, the freckled youth shook her head at her own mistake. "Apologies, I forget sometimes how important Ianath makes things for me. Though she certainly won't let you forget who she is, it's rather charming once you get used to her." The hand had dropped to her side, but the fish had gotten a speculative and approving look from the girl before she plopped down in the sands.
Ianath, for her own part, was dutifully ignoring her rider in favor of fostering relations with her green clutchmate. Her own flat head had inclined towards the dragonet had inclined slightly and tiny wings had flapped lightly in pleasure. Greetings, Filanth! It is free time today for you and Yours too? Do you like the water? It's so nice on your hide! It was very important for her to make a good impression and rapport, so much more so than Inaari cared. After all, she was the queen!
Nonetheless, it was nice to meet another Weyrling that wasn't male, and so Inaari gratefully sat next to Tiepet and inspected her fish. "That's really good, by the way. My brothers used to bring some back and would try to make me do it, but ma was insistent. You catch 'em, you clean 'em, so I never really learned. I can cook them?" Her smile was wide now, comfortable in a topic she enjoyed, before swapping over to the reason the green and her rider were here. "So...dolphins? I've never seen one before but then, I'd never seen a dragon except overhead until I was Searched. It's amazing how much of Pern you don't see in the Holds." Especially the older Holds, the ones that had been around since Pern began. The ones whose Weyrs refused to acknowledge Atypicals. It made the new rider wonder exactly what else there was about Pern she'd been missing out on.

I do like the water, and the creatures in it. Has Ianath's ever seen a dolphin? Mine says she's seen one only once, so we're down here looking for them.
Filanth had started speaking before she'd actually heard Inaari's reply, and a mental acknowledgment on Tiepet's behalf over what the Goldrider was saying was quickly noted. If Ianath's had never seen a dolphin then it was very common for the little green to assume that the gold would not as well. They were the same age of course, coming from the same clutch.
"I...I don't know how to co-cook or properly c-clean fish, I...I just know how to gugut them like this. I...I don't have to worry about my ...flitters getting sick from eating them no matter how babadly I gut."
An awkward silence rose between the pair, the Shepherd having no idea at all what to say. Before this girl sitting next to her had been nothing but a common Candidate, and now she was the person the Weyr would look to for their future. In that regard Tiepet was a simple greenrider, not that it was a bad thing. Her heart was always full of pride thinking about Filanth, and that was enough for her.
"So...you..you're from the Holds? WWhich one?"
While ours talk then, why don't we go into the water? Mine has shown me how to swim, even if it's just a little bit.

Playing in the waves had been thrilling and exhilarating, so immersing her entire body in them like a huge salty bath could only be so much better! Ianath's eyes were immediately as blue as the ocean depths, whirling with interest at her green clutchmate. I would love that! I have swum a bit in the lake for the Weyr, but never this! It was the most uninhibited anyone had ever seen the proud little gold as she started to splash out and away from the girls with a happy bugle. We will have fun and swim and meet dolphins! It seemed really like the best thing to be doing with her free time, and probably even Inaari couldn't have pulled her from the water at that very moment!
Eager to teach and make a friend, Inaari simply grinned. "It's not too hard to clean once you gut at least! I'm pretty sure all that happens now is that you just sorta take the head off, and very finely slice away the scales. Though sometimes if you're gonna fire-cook them, the scales are useful to use as a padding. And yeah, I'm from the Holds. My family owns a small cot over near Fort, which is where my ma sent me when she thought I was being a little too unmanageable." Fingers touched her freckles with a bit of a rueful amusement. "I bruise easy, and I have been freckled forever. My overprotective ma thought that it was some big issue, so I didn't work outside like everyone else, but I love to climb and do things. So she sent me up to cousins at Fort for fostering, which sorta backfired since now I spend more time outdoors than I would've ever at a Hold." And she liked it that way. "What about you? Where d'you come from? Around here? I admit I haven't seen a whole lot of the islands past the Weyr, they brought me in and I've been sorta here ever since!" It was the best thing that had ever happened, really.
