I do remember last time I played, there were MANY random people popping up. I'm sure most weren't part of the guild. These people said they knew NOTHING about chess.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO KNOW A THING ABOUT CHESS TO PLAY CHESS IN TOWNS WITH THIS GUILD!!! THE KING IS THE ONLY ONE THAT SHOULD KNOW AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY NEVER SIGN UP FOR THE KING POSITION!!!
It does help to know the basics of chess, however, king or not.
For beginners joining the guild, I suggest this site here; http://www.conservativebookstore.com/chess/grules.htm
It is a site that is easy to use and maneuver through. As far as I know, everything is accurate (I know chess quite well as I've played it since I was young, around age 8 [so been playing 11 years]) and I can say that this site doesn't list anything that isn't accurate, as far as I've seen. On the site, you will find little shields with names next to them. Most are chess pieces. Within the pieces, Rook, for example, you will find a description, how to move the Rook, and how to "take" an opponent's piece with the Rook. There is also mentioning of special maneuvers, such as "Castling," which is actually a new concept to me. eek I was in chess club from 6th-8th grade, as well as taught to play years previous by grandparents and my dad, and I don't remember ever hearing how to do the maneuver, nor doing the maneuver, though, I had heard of it. I did read up on it on the site, though. I have a general understanding of how it's done.
Anyway, good luck with learning about the game.
One last thing, to newer members, I would recommend either playing actual chess, playing online chess ( http://www.chess.com , for example [challenge me there if you need a practice partner; username is Sora_Of_KHK]), playing chess in towns (with the guild) or other methods of playing so you can get better. Play at least 3-5 times a week. Also, don't bring people to the guild's reserved chess board if those people aren't in the guild and don't plan to join. It's best for non-players to NOT know the location so that we don't have any interruptions during games. Obviously you can practice among your friends if the guild isn't holding a game in towns when you'd like to practice, but as said; it's best they don't know the guild's chess board if they aren't planning to join the guild. Sure you should play regular chess to practice, but I'd recommend playing Towns chess at least 2-3 times a week, and normal chess a time or two a week.
It is NOT required to know chess basics, if you're not a king, but it IS a good idea to know the basics anyway.
Happy Chess-ing, xp

sweatdrop There was an entry about the general basics of chess? gonk
I'm sorry... emo All I saw was an entry about the rules of chess for Gaia Towns...
I figured I'd try doing something more productive toward the guild, rather than just being a member, who is (other than playing a chess game with the guild) just sitting here, doing nothing beneficial at all for the guild... neutral

It's gotta be one of the more welcoming guilds I'm part of, as well as one of the more active. rofl I'm part of 13 others, plus my own zOMG clan (though the clan has just 1 member other than me). None are really all that active. Gets boring, and most people leave.

I had previously planned to make my own chess basics thread, but--due to a ridiculous photobucket error--I didn't complete that ******** you pawn image error. ******** you.
Anyway, if someone did that it would be totally awesome.
crying mine had custom graphics and stuff that showed all the specifics about the pieces' movements. Not just how they move, but about how they attack, what stops them from moving. It was so awesome! D: SCREW YOU PHOTOBUCKET

O-o Sin, try ImageShack or something, because that image sounds awesome! What format is it though? The format may be what keeps photobucket from allowing the upload.

If I remember correctly, I suggested playing some chess with new members on yahoo chess or chess.com. Using teaching games, and learning how skilled certain people were.

I can be a mentor if need be. I gave my Chess.com info within that post with hopes that someone would challenge me if they needed practice or tutoring of any kind. The site provides chat within so you can tell people what they're doing wrong or right in any game. You can also turn time limits on or off (probably off during tutoring sessions).
I may have gotten a bit rusty having not played chess in a year up until joining this guild. I was in an accident about a year ago, which put me in a bed a lot, and I could've played on chess.com, but honestly I forgot about the site until I joined this guild, sweatdrop and now I'm on chess.com every other day trying to get my skills back up. I know the general rules of game-play. I'm still trying to grasp an understanding of castling though (reading how it's done on the site I provided and trying it on chess.com)... I was never taught that. Hell up until recently I didn't know you could exchange a pawn (once it reached your opponent's side of the board) for a Queen, Rook, Knight, or Bishop.... I was taught to just exchange for Queen ,which is the best choice, but I'd have liked to have been taught the other options too, even though they aren't really required.
