The day was bright and sunny but not too hot that the animals at the zoo hid away to avoid the heat. There were lots of children and adults milling about gaping at the creatures. The perfect day had brought a huge crowd and it would be easy to lose a child in the swirling mass of people.
Ask was amazed by the zoo, there were so many different animals. The deer and birds were neat and the big cats and hyenas were amazing. The monkeys made him stare in horror and awe. They were just so loud and crude but even so they were funny in their own way. There were also squirrels that ran hither and thither stealing food away from children and scrounging around the trashcans and picnic tables. Ask thought it was funny that there were "wild" squirrels in places where wild animals were in cages.
Ask had had a lot to say about the various animals from "neat!" and "wow!" to "awesome I want one!" However, it only took one glance at the snake tanks before he pointed at the inhabitants and declared, "GROSS". It was the first thing that popped into his mind and out of his mouth, loudly and decisively declaring his opinion. Those squirmy, crawly, scaly, slimy things needed to stay as far away as possible from him.

"That's disgusting, look at it. No, I'm serious, look - oh GNARLY, it's like oozing around. That's YOU!" "Oh yeah? I don't see a BEE EXHIBIT at this zoo, goes to show how many people want to look at you." "It'd be way cooler if there was, they just can't have any of those because bees are too dangerous. They do things, they don't just roll around and eat."
Two children were harping back and forth at each other, clinging to the guard rail that stood in front of the glass enclosure. A thick, heavy looking yellow snake had turned it's massive head toward the pair, and was staring curiously through the glass at the girl - who was leaning as close as possible with genuine fascination. It looked almost like they were having a silent conversation, even if that was a ridiculous concept. You could see a few expanses of purple skin under her outfit, but her face was all but obscured by a round black hood that was pulled up as far as it would go.
The conversation ended abruptly when someone took the time to yell 'Gross!' at the animal in question. Theodore spun around with the longest stretch of a grin possible on his face, although Adeline just flinched and stared forward. It looked like the bee boy had just won the lottery, or that he was about to run over there and hug Ask for offering his opinion.
"...They are SO gross, right? I was just saying that. I mean look at it." he pointed a colored finger at the snake again, his smile wild with pointed teeth as he laughed. "You're pretty smart, what's your name? Hey, Adeline, I told you I was right."
His sister remained frozen in place, not daring to turn and see the kid he was talking about. Though try as she may to avoid showing what was under her hood, the faint glisten of golden scales that moved from behind her legs wasn't hiding. Her tailsnake was effectively glaring in the direction of the toddler, as if he were just as gross himself and had no place to speak.

Ask's eyes widened when one of the children in front of the tank whirled around and smiled a wide, sharp toothed, gleeful grin at him. The other boy was kind of intimidating with those sharp teeth and ok maybe the fluffy antennae were not so intimidating but his vibrant teasing energy was. The other child totally had the right opinion about snakes though and that was enough to break the ice.
"I'm Ask." He answered with just a little awkward pause. "It is SO gross. It's all wriggly and slimy and crawly and scaly. I don't like them." He would probably had continued with his diatribe against all things serpentine when he spotted one snake that was definitely not inside a tank and in fact seemed to be glaring at him.
Well Ask was not one to be easily riled but snakes... well snakes just rubbed him the wrong way entirely. So he glared right back at the tailsnake and did the mature thing. He stuck his tongue out at it.

There was something in the way the girl hunched her shoulders and slid closer to the glass 'pen' to stare down at the snake, that made her seem extremely ill at ease. Even without her face showing, the body language she projected was screaming her discomfort louder than her words might. A flinch jerked her shoulders a second time, immediately after Ask stuck his tongue out at...well, her.
Her tailsnake lifted it's head and opened it's scaly jaws in a furious hiss, but it seemed as if Adeline were purposely pretending she didn't know about it so she wouldn't have to turn around.
It would've worked better, had her brother been able to contain himself. Theo began laughing again on cue, shifting his weight to one side and elbowing Ask none-too-gently in the shoulder. "Well I'm Theo. And it seems like you have an admirer, isn't that awesome?" His joke made him snort in the process of laughing, but he was not concerned with being made a fool. "Adeline. Adeline! Come over here and meet Ask. Don't be a jerk. ADELINE. SISTER. HEY."
He was waving in her general direction when just a glimpse of amber eyes flicked over, and a single yellow snake peeked around the side of her hood. Although her expression was burning with frustration, but the only word that passed her lips was, "No."
"WHOA, LOOK AT THAT! Dude I told you they were gross! See? This kid agrees with me." the boy recoiled dramatically, pointing at his sister in mock fear as he threw his free arm around the toddler next to him. His face was split with a smile so huge that he arguably appeared to be a much bigger threat than his 'freak sister'. Thankfully, he was snake-free, and therefore acceptable.

Yes it was thankful that Theo was not in any way related to snakes. Wait. His sister was a snake. Well that couldn't be any fault of Theo's. Ask wasn't remotely afraid of snakes not even snakes that seemed to be attached to the girl in front of him. As a matter of fact, Ask, who was usually an easy going non-confrontational child would quite willingly stomp on a snake.
"I don't want to meet Missy Snakes either. And she can keep her nasty hair and tail away from me or I'll pull 'em." He said, crossing his arms and huffing in offense at their mere presence. It didn't matter that the girl with the snakey features was uncomfortable she had snakes as hair and even a tail snake. Not even one snake was forgivable.
"But, it's nice to meet you Theo." Snakes didn't get politeness. Bees apparently did. Bees hadn't ever bothered him before and they helped create more flowers and stuff, which was useful, not like snakes that just undulated along hissing and killing cute little animals like shrews.

A short, 'Hee!' made it's way between Theo's lips, a hardly restrained laugh of glee that the kid he just happened to run into was playing along so perfectly. What were the chances of that? Not only did Ask not like snakes, he HATED them. And he forwarded that feeling onto Adeline. You know what that was? Hilarious. He squeezed the kid's shoulder like they were fast friends, and nodded seriously.
"No, no she should stay far away, you're right. If I were you, I'd rip the snakes right off - I fully understand." He continued nodding, turning them both just slightly away from his sister but talking with a voice loud enough for her to hear. "Maybe if we pretend it's not there, it'll lose interest and leave. I think that's the best idea." And he glanced over his shoulder again, about to burst into hysterics.
The purple girl was right on the edge of fury, taking a step forward and then faltering and staying there, hands balled into fists. What the heck was this? A joke? She could remember distinctly, her mom insisting that Theo was only trying to get a rise out of her. And that she should ignore everything he says to bother her. ...How was that the case if this random stupid boy was agreeing? And who was he to call her NASTY?
Her eyes flashed dangerously and snapped wide open in an unearthly stare that whipped straight into Theo's glance as it passed over, and he went rigid. His mouth was still pulled up in a huge, distinctive smirk, but his eyes looked bewildered. The smile started to fade, and the hand on Ask's shoulder twitched a little. The only thing he could manage to say was, "...Not...funny..."
( So it's clear, she is mildly paralyzing him - but Ask won't be unless he looks at her. You can choose to have him do that or not. : D )

"I don't want to touch the snakes..." Ask trailed off as he heard Theo's "Not funny" and how he stilled so suddenly. He looked up at Theo who seemed frozen while looking at his sister. Something was fishy here. "Theo? Theeeoo?" He asked tugging at his shirt hoping to snap him out of it. What was that snakey girl doing to to him? Stupid. Evil. Snakey. Thing!
Ask was close to losing his temper for the first time, why he aught to go stomp on her foot or tail snake or something.

The awkward freeze in time continued for a few moments, as Theo's body didn't budge when Ask pulled on his shirt nor did he look over. The very most that Theo was able to do was crane his head just an inch or so to the side, even if his eyes seemed cemented forward without fail. It was an additional few seconds of staring before Adeline suddenly blinked, and the little 'spell' broke.
At this point in time, Theo jumped back with a twitch and closed his eyes immediately, just in case. He then proceeded to shake himself out in disgust and stomp a few steps away, dragging his new comrade with him like a dog on a leash. "UGH." He gagged, kicking his leg a little as if still trying to shake off the leftover 'Adeline'. "That. Was. DISGUSTING, ADELINE. UGH. What did you even do? Don't look at me ever again you freak. Oh my God. I need a shower. Did you even see that, Ask?"
As her brother spasmed away, Adeline just stood straight with her thin arms twisted in front of her chest in indignation, her lips pushed out in an angry pout. She was visibly angry - maybe moreso than before - but there was a hint of pride in her face that she actually had successfully shut someone up for once. "Don't even talk, Theo. I'll do what I want, I don't care what you think." She glanced pointedly at Ask, and her lips pursed further. "What?"

To say that Ask was concerned, was to put it mildly. A few minutes with barely any movement from the obviously energetic bee boy seemed abnormal. When he did move Ask was pulled along with him even farther away from the snakey thing. He couldn't say that was a bad thing.
When Adeline looked at him challengingly Ask stared right back and almost visibly puffed up. "I did see that Theo. And I think the snakey thing is way too proud of herself for using her powers on a kid for no good reason. Just like a snake. Can't say I'm surprised. I'd rather go see a decent animal like hyenas." For some reason, even with a prime example of her power Ask couldn't bring himself to be afraid of Adeline, he just couldn't back down either. Give a snake an inch of wiggle room and it'd swallow you whole after all.
