Rohan wasn't entirely sure he understood everything that had happened that evening; in fact, he wasn't sure he could have told anyone exactly what had happened, or if it was even significant in any way. It sure as hell felt like it was significant to him, but then again, he'd been known to think differently from other people quite often and he didn't quite trust his own thoughts on the situation.

And then, of course... there was Ursula, and the fact he didn't quite dare to figure out if she had made the situation better or worse with her sudden interest in him and Khalla. Actually, it was probably safe to say that anything Ursula got herself involved into was going to end unpredictably. At any rate, Rohan was trying to figure out if he was perhaps, being an utter idiot by pondering over the situation this much; maybe it hadn't been as particularly interesting for the girl that now walked beside him, as it had for him.

At least they were out of that gym, and out of the crowd of people that had made him feel like a fish out of water (even if he did, in fact, belong to their group). It had been interesting to note that Khalla had managed to fit in impressively when inserted into such an event. In fact, had anyone been looking at them, they'd have probably thought that girl belonged there, while Rohan looked like a bit of an outsider.

His gaze slipped over to the object of his thoughts as they walked down the well-lit street (After all, he really wished to avoid trouble that night, and even though he was pretty sure most of the negaverse, if not all of it, had been accounted for at that wedding, which meant tonight was pretty much a.... off-night, he wasn't sure what other dangers lurked around). Instead of asking what he really wanted to ask, he motioned towards her dress of choice with a nod of his head, "Hopefully you're not feeling particularly chilly?" he kicked his mind when it kindly reminded him rather cheerfully that another slow, close dance would have fixed that right up!

Stupid, stupid mind. And stupid, stupid, unhelpful thoughts.

Khalla had known when she agreed to go to this wedding that it was going to be somewhat of a.. spectacle. Not only because she wasn't on the best terms with the bride (though it was really Khalla who held the grudge more than Ursula) but because everything about Rohan and the situation implied that he wasn't in the company of females very often and for him to actually be seen in this company was probably rarer still. She had been setting herself up and knew that, and yet somehow it all managed to exceed her expectations - both in good and bad ways.

She had been glad to pull Rohan out of his shell - the dancing, what little they did anyway, had been a nice touch that she hadn't thought him quite capable of. He had been sweet and sociable when she thought him incapable and that meant he'd shown her a good time amidst people and company he was obviously nervous around. Everything afterward, on the other hand, was a bit of a hassle. Mostly because everything afterward involved Ursula. Even at her wedding, maybe especially because it was her wedding and she had been feeling particularly bold, she had time to try and ruin a good thing.

Still, they had managed to get out of there alive, if not a little earlier than they should have, and Khalla deeply appreciated the pleasant walk home.

"What?" she asked softly, her bright eyes turning up to look at him where he was framed by the lamp light above them. "Oh, it's not that chilly out here. Just a bit breezy, but I'm fine, really," she smiled and looked back down at her hands where she had been rolling one of her pale dreads between her forefingers. It never occurred to her that claiming to be cold was a perfect way to get male attention, mostly because her mind just didn't operate that way. She simply told the truth.

With a contented sigh, she pushed her dreads back over her shoulder and dropped her hands to cross them behind her back as she walked at his side. "It really wasn't so bad tonight, was it?" After a pause, she laughed weakly and added, "Ursula aside."

The fact she seemed distracted did not pass unnoticed. For the most part, the girl was usually pretty attentive and tried to answer anything anyone asked her right away (as if she thought it were rude not to do so - he was pretty sure she did think that).

Instead of chiding her, he motioned to her dressing attire with a wave of his hand when she looked up at him, startled out of whatever thoughts she'd been dwelling on, "Your dress, Khalla. I figured you'd be cold," in a way, it was mildly comforting to know he wasn't the only one that felt distracted and drowned in thoughts; turn about was indeed fair play. However, at the same time, the notion she didn't look all that happy at the current moment didn't sit all too well with him (for whatever reason - he wasn't bothering to try to understand or analyze his own thoughts, since it was proving to be a futile at the moment, given the fact it was creating more questions and stress than it was solving).

His gaze stayed on her as she finally answered, and though she assured him she was fine, Rohan didn't look all that convinced. But then again, that might've been his mind prodding at him, being more treacherous than he'd thought it to be possible, "If you're sure," he said as he stuck his hands inside his pockets, trying to not look mildly disappointed (which he wasn't sure he was pulling off correctly). He'd been about ready to sink back into the comfortable silence and his thoughts when she spoke up again.

It was only then that Rohan realized she was right; it hadn't been a bad night at all, and the notion pretty much contradicted all former expectations for said night, "No, it wasn't all that bad," he agreed as he offered her a small smile, "Not at all. Ursula included. I think she was only trying to help; she just has a very strange... way of helping."
PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2010 10:12 am

If their roles had been reversed and he had been the one to ignore her when she was trying to ask a question, she certainly would have reprimanded, however lightly given their current situation. She was thankful that he was patient with her, however, because the night had certainly been a whirlwind to say the least.

"I'm sure," she said softly, though she had a slightly puzzled look on her face as she picked up the small hints of disappointment on his own. She hadn't ever really been on dates or interacted with many males - at least not ones hoping for a little romance. Castor didn't count. The fact that he was hoping to keep her warm with an arm around her shoulders, or maybe offer her his jacket went way over her head. "If it gets too cold I'll let you know, okay?" Maybe he just wanted to help - that was a feeling that Khalla could definitely sympathize with.

"You say helping," Khalla murmured, one hand rising involuntarily to stroke the dreadlock she had used to hold the rest back. It was an instinctual reaction, checking her hair to make sure it wasn't coming down, but her dreads seemed to hold up better in this style than loose hair ever had. It seemed even the mention of Ursula set her shifting, and with good reason. Khalla didn't particularly like people that were nosy and dramatic - never mind that she was nosy, if for different reasons. "Some days I think that woman lives just to torment me." She sighed at this, realizing instantly that she was letting herself get down and starting to feel negative. She didn't want to remember this night like that - it had been a night of progress! A good night!

"Let's talk about something else," she said softly, moving so she could hook her arm in his (without asking) so that the talk-and-walk felt more personal and less like two random strangers on a dark night. "How about the dance, was that okay?" She smiled up at him, squinting a little as they passed by a lamp post that framed his figure and made him a bit difficult to see. "You looked like you weren't completely tortured by the end."

Rohan could have laughed. He really could have; however, as it was, he chose to remain politely quiet as she offered to let him know if she got cold. Apparently (thankfully, really) the reasons why he'd been asking such questions in the first place had gone 'woosh' over her head, which meant that... in a way, he was pretty much back at square one, but then again, on another hand, at least it wasn't because she wasn't interested.

It was just that the notion hadn't even crossed her mind and idly... he wondered if that was worse. He turned his gaze away from her and towards the sky, which offered them a cloudy haven, even though it didn't seem like it'd be raining any time soon. His gaze only slid towards his companion momentarily as she spoke, "She's special, no doubt," was all he offered before returning his gaze to the clouds, as if by doing so he could hope to attempt to somehow clear his thoughts away from derailing into fields he didn't quite want to go into just then and now. He chose to close his mouth upon her request, after all, he knew the two females didn't quite get along (and he couldn't quite begrudge Khalla, both because he was apparently.... biased, which was ironic, and because he really did know Ursula was a handful at the best of times).

The fact he'd been lost in looking up at the clouds (as if they could offer insight on his multiple problems) meant that when she took his arm, he was thrown entirely for a hoop. His gaze snapped back down at her instantly, though in his defense, he actually managed to hold his ground and not trip, which was, in his mild opinion, quite the feat given the circumstances.

A good night indeed, though possibly not for the same reasons Khalla thought it was.

Rohan quickly decided that though this didn't quite feel like the dancing, it was leagues better than having her drag him around by his hand. Again, he swiftly decided he could, in fact, get used to it "It was fine," he told her, and then decided that she actually deserved the truth, "I really enjoyed it," a pause, "Thank you for it," and now that he'd actually admitted to it, he was forced to take his gaze away from her, because her close proximity was making him feel extremely self conscious.
PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2010 10:13 am

Khalla hugged his arm to her, pleased as she walked along at his side. The click of her heels against the pavement was a familiar sound, though she wasn't used to actually wearing heels unless she was in her fuku. At least that had given her a lot of practice in them and her feet had yet to get sore. A little bit of dancing and a walk home was nothing compared to running around on rooftops and kickboxing in those badboys.

"Don't thank me," she said with a small laugh, watching him as he gazed down at her, "you're the one that invited me, remember? That means this night is completely your doing." She patted one hand against the arm she had wrapped her own around, then turned to look ahead of them down the sidewalk. "I should really be the one thanking you, you know. I don't really go out and do much, my roommate fusses at me for it all the time." She let go of his arm with one of hers only, just so she could reach up and nervously toy with the amber stud in her earlobe. She had such a variety of nervous habits. "So thank you for inviting me and showing me a good time, otherwise I may have just spent it at the homeless shelter giving out more soup." Not that she thought that was a bad thing, but Amara constantly chided her for working too much. She was beginning to see the point, a little, at least if all her 'time off' was as nice as this.

She kept toying with her earring then, staring ahead of them down the sidewalk and content to walk along beside him in silence. At least until she thought of something else she wanted to ask him. "Do you think you'd mind coming over for dinner?" She made a slightly irritated face, at herself, and added, "obviously to my grandmother's house, not my dorm." He'd shown her a great time and the only way she could think to pay him back was to do something nice for him. She liked to cook, doing something herself for someone was always the most personal thing she could imagine. Plus it just made her happy.

She looked away from the empty street and back up at him as she waited for his answer, smiling at him in ever-patient silence. As if she'd ever do anything else.

Rohan was still trying to process how he felt about her taking his arm when she decided to take it a step further and moved to hug it to her. It was then he decided that yes, this was pretty much up there with the dancing, because while it was a tad less contact, it made up for it with the fact she was pretty much clinging to him in a way that made him think he might be some sort of lifeline. He wasn't entirely sure what had elicited such a reaction from her, but he wasn't about to question it, least she think twice about it.

After all... he was still enjoying himself quite a bit, even if all they were doing was something as horribly innocent as walking. Then again, he hadn't done something as innocent as walking side by side with anyone in a very long time, and he was pretty sure it'd never felt quite as thrilling as this. He pretty much felt like he was a child, waiting to board a roller coaster and waiting eagerly in line - well, more or less anyhow. Still, the comparison stood, "You're the one who accepted," her patting his arm forced his attention back down on her just in time to see her retreat one arm in order to mess almost neurotically with her earring.

Before he even knew what he was doing, he reached out with his free hand and took hold of her fussing hand. Of course, no sooner had he done that, that he paused and felt like a deer caught in spotlights, because now he had no ******** clue how to proceed, because in all honesty, he could not, for the life of him, recall his brain issuing a command for his arm to even bloody well move. After a few awkward seconds, he let her go, "You shouldn't fuss with it, it's fine," this from the man that had neurotically fussed with his tie so much he'd loosened it up a whole few inches from it's original position. Not to mention the way his shirt cuffs had looked before Khalla had straightened them out.

In his defense... he felt Khalla was tempting fate. He was pretty damned glad the girl had no way of peeking into his mind, because he was pretty sure that at that point in time she'd have probably issued some sort of restraining order against him. Woe was him, "I would've spent the day hiding in my apartment," at least if Ursula had let him - he wasn't entirely sure she would have. She might've crashed the door down and dragged him out. A pause followed after her question, though it was more due to him thinking something along the lines of 'Maybe the restraining order won't be necessary. Yay!' than anything else, "I'd love that," another pause, "Why?" it just... he just wasn't sure what he'd done to deserve it.
PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2010 10:14 am

"Well, that's true, but you still -" and then her sentence promptly cut off as he grabbed her hand with his own, shocking her into silence quicker than anything probably had in her life. All at once, reality came crashing down onto her and the oblivious Khalla became suddenly very self-aware. The dance, the way it had relaxed him, the falter when she grabbed his arm and now.. this. When he let her hand go her own stayed exactly where he had left it, poised in mid-air. Her eyes were a little wide and lips parted as if she were about to go 'ooooooh' in her sudden revelation.

Wow, she felt stupid.

Everything she'd been doing the whole night had probably led him on. He'd been seeing her as an actual date instead of a friend that had stepped up to help him out. She wasn't quite sure when it had happened, but her cheeks were suddenly on fire with a blush and she was positive she could hear her own heartbeat in her ears. She wasn't used to guys looking at her like that and for some reason it had never, ever clicked that Rohan of all people.. She dropped her hand out of the air and let it hang loosely at her side, glancing away from him.

"I, well, because," she stuttered and stammered over her words, even more self-conscious now over her decision to invite him to dinner. Before the hand-grab it had simply been an innocent way to return the favor. After it, though, it felt like it had all kinds of other meanings that Khalla (in her current mindset) couldn't even begin to comprehend.

Still, if she simply revoked the invitation so suddenly it would be rude.

"Because I.. want to return the favor. Uhm," she faltered again, hearing a hundred different meanings in every word she said. "You know, show you a good time too." She groaned inwardly at that one too. This was too awkward for her. She didn't want to just turn and run away because she did really like Rohan, he was a sweet heart, and he meant a lot to her. She wasn't even sure that he had upset her because of what he was implying. She just wasn't.. ready for this.

With a small sigh, she slowly uncurled her other arm from his, chewing on her lip and staring down at her feet instead of daring to look up at him. He'd been hiding a secret from her, and now she knew. He had to know that she knew. This was about to get ten times worse.

Rohan watched her as realization finally hit her. Amusingly enough, he was torn between feeling mildly amused that they were now on the same wavelength, and slightly concerned that she seemed to be taking it so hard. He opted for the former, though he still couldn't help but feel tendrils of concern; apparently he'd been right to assume the possibility he actually liked her hadn't even crossed her mind. Though in her defense, he'd been pretty careful to hide it. He'd only slipped a couple of times, and this one had been the most obvious of them.

It was decisively endearing, the way she was not fumbling over words and stumbling to try to form coherent answers that didn't have double meaning. She was, however, failing rather miserably at it, now that she was so self conscious, and had it been any other time or any other person, Rohan might have just considered laughing. Instead, he watched as she dropped her hand from his arm and looked awkwardly about; somehow, he could understand how she was feeling, and besides, he'd not really been expecting anything from her to begin with.

Instead of answering her statements, he smiled slightly at her (something which he did all too rarely), "Don't worry," it came out of nowhere, but... he simply couldn't ignore the proverbial elephant in the room (or road, as it was), and let her suffer, "It's fine," he reached out with a hand and placed it on top of her head, allowing it to linger there for a few moments before carefully ruffling the hair (making sure not to to really undo the hairdo she seemed to fuss with so often), "Really," the underlying message was clear 'I wasn't expecting anything from you,', "I won't do anything," after all, he hadn't been the one to initiate any of the contact they'd shared that night (or even previous days) - he wasn't particularly good at initiating things, as a rule of thumb, and while he had grabbed he had, he actually couldn't recall his mind issuing the actual order for it.

After a few moments, he retreated his hand from her head and stuck them inside his jacket pockets, his gaze returning to look up ahead, "Am I still invited to dinner, then?" he felt it was only fair to ask, considering the change of events.
PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2010 10:15 am

The hand on her head shocked her out of her shy silence, her eyes startled as she glanced up - though this time for a completely different reason. The gesture was almost the complete opposite from what she would expect of someone in Rohan's position. It was almost.. demeaning. It was something one expected of a brother and a younger sister. That, and she was instantly worried about her hair as soon as he touched it. Unfortunately, it had become a bit of a weak point in her confidence.

She understood the gesture though, and despite the fact that her hands instantly went up as his came down, she was offering him a weak smile. It was an icebreaker of sorts, a way to break the tension. She was toying with her hair as he was trying to explain himself to her and though she seemed preoccupied, she was listening. Her hair was another good distraction from having to look at him and see.. anything in his face. Guilt was what she didn't want to see, most of all, and she was afraid it was there.

"I know you won't," she said finally, dropping her hands from her hair once she was convinced that it wasn't a disaster. "You're a better man than that." And yet, she was still standing a bit away from him - not nearly as close as before. It was hard to be as free and open with him when she suddenly realized there was something between them, especially when that something had been there all along and she had just been blind. It was like suddenly realizing you were standing next to a tiger that had been invisible beforehand.

"Yes," she said slowly at his question, chewing on her bottom lip again as she thought about her invitation from before. She wouldn't revoke the invite, she wasn't rude, and she did really want to repay him for showing her such a good time. She tapped her fingers against the side of her leg, thinking for a moment, before she finally looked back up at him. "But I think.. that maybe I just need a little time? My parents are coming into town for a couple of weeks and I'll be busy." She could have done it before they came, she still had a little time before they were going to take over her schedule, but she really did want to stop and think about this.

"After that, I'll call you and let you know when." She glanced down from his face and ahead of them, down the sidewalk that led deeper and deeper into the city and closer to home. She had every intention of keeping the promise, she just needed some time to think about this - it was like her whole world had been flipped upside down.

Despite the fact he'd barely ruffled her hair, her hand instantly went up to fuss with the dreads. It always amused him (albeit silently), that she was so self conscious of something he felt didn't look bad on her at all. If Ursula had wanted to, she could have told her to do a great many other things that would have been further more degrading than the dreads, that was for sure. As it was, Rohan tilted his head to watch her as she fussed and took in his words; he would've told her he thought her hair was just fine, but at that given moment in time, what with her sudden epiphany about him, he wasn't sure she'd appreciate it. Thus so, he kept his mouth shut.

Had she bothered to look up, she'd have realized that guilt wasn't amongst the emotions he was feeling; as far as he was concerned, there was nothing wrong with what he felt, so long he coped with it and did not expect anything from her in return. After all, liking someone wasn't a selfish feeling, and he'd more or less come to terms with it a while back; it was when she pulled stunts like the dancing that he was caught off-guard (but he'd pretty much decided he'd like that part too). He figured she'd be more careful now, but at least she hadn't yet run for the proverbial hills, which was a pretty good sign in his eyes.

The irony of her words. If she only knew what sort of man he really was, "No, no you don't," he told her, arching a brow as he watched the way she now walked, as far away from him as she possibly could, without being rude, "But that's fine. That's why I'm telling you," he was watching her out the corner of an eye. Amusingly enough, now that the proverbial cat was out of the bag, he felt far better and far less awkward than he had before, though apparently, it meant that it was her turn to squirm around, which was pretty unfortunate. Still, Rohan felt that the fact she hadn't revoked the invitation was a good enough sign.

"I can deal with that," he told her, "I have work to do these next few days anyhow," both back at the school and... for his extracurricular duties. He was sure that now that the wedding was over with, they would be asked to double their efforts, "I can wait," with that, he directed his gaze back ahead of them, letting them sink into a comfortable (for him, anyhow) silence as they walked the now more familiar streets. Her house was just up ahead; he could see it, even in the dim lights. It was interesting to know he recognized it and yet he'd only been there a couple of times. As they reached the front part of the house, he turned to look at her for a long, silent moment, "You did nothing wrong, Khalla," a pause, "Will you be fine?"
PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2010 10:16 am

"You're not making a very good case for yourself," she remarked, turning her gaze back up at him finally. He was telling her he wouldn't do anything, and then telling her at the same time that she had no evidence that he wouldn't. It was contradictory, but at the same time she could only smile at it. It was a very small, weak smile, but it was still there. It was all very much a Rohan thing to do and even if she was uncomfortable in this new situation, she recognized that one familiar thing.

She saw her house approaching in the distance, growing larger and more real as they got closer. The porch light was on - a thoughtful gesture on her grandmother's part, no doubt. The soft light illuminated her dark yard and the sidewalk in front of it as the pair stopped to talk just a bit more. She was relieved to have finally arrived, though a bit saddened that their night ended so oddly.

"Alright, then that sounds like a good plan. I'll spend some vacation time with my parents and you can work on whatever it is TAs keep themselves busy with." She clasped her hands together in front of her, lacing the fingers and squeezing them together a bit out of nervousness. Everything about their night had turned from light-hearted to awkward, and all it had taken was one little mistaken grasp of her hand.

"Oh, I know, and I'll be okay," she said with that same weak, small smile. "Like I said, it's just something I need to think about. It's kind of a surprise." She untwined her fingers and took a small step backward, then half-turned before she brought up a hand and gave him a small wave. "I'll see you again before you know it, ok?" Then, with that, she turned her back and started her way up the long path to her porch. She climbed the stairs, opened her door, and went inside with only a small glance over her shoulder for the guy that had shown her such a good time.

It was a shame they had to part on such strange terms, because she really had enjoyed herself.

He watched her silently as she turned away from him, apparently deciding that he had nothing useful to add to the now finished conversation. Still, he did not wish to move from where he stood till he was sure she was inside the house and safe (though Lord only knew what or whom he was protecting her from, seeing as how he was probably the worst threat to her in within the vicinity).

When she turned that last time to glance his way, he offered her a polite nod and then watched as the door closed behind her. All things considered, things could have gone a hell of a lot worse, as far as he was concerned. That in mind, Rohan offered the house one last look before turning around and walking away.

He felt like he'd taken a load off his shoulders, and he was only concerned that she probably felt it was her turn to bear said load.
