Old cities were always the best places to visit. Weather-worn ruins devoid of regular human presence, ancient sites that haven't been touched by hand in thousands of years.
It's always quiet there. Birdsong and silence.
Through fallen pillars and crumbling streets you wander. This particular town deserted thousands of years ago, and the archaeologists don't come here anymore. Why bother? The people didn't leave anything of value. No interesting hieroglyphics, no priceless artifacts. Just their city, their homes. Too far away for tourists, but close enough for you to lose yourself when you need to be alone. There's plenty of towns nearby now- modern towns with modern conveniences. Modern noises, modern headaches.
But this, this is peaceful.
Your wandering inevitably takes you to an old shrine. You've been here thousands of times before. There are still books on the shelves here- no survey found anything in them worth salvaging so they've been left to succumb to the ages with the ruins around them.
As you gaze at the shelves, you notice something... different.
Why did you never notice it before?
One of the books.
It seems... new.
Still quite aged in its own right, but the years have been far kinder to it. It lies on its side on a shelf in the back of the room. The wind must have disturbed the dust on it- part of it's beautiful blue cover is showing through.
You slowly make your way across the room, footfalls echoing off the walls. The book is larger than you had initially perceived; but strangely, it has little weight to it.
You remove the dust from the cover, carefully.
The cover is luxurious, almost like velvet.
The wording is carefully crafted in golden script.
"
Annus Mirabilis"
Year of Wonders?
The books is too old to have been here when the city stood- perhaps someone has left it here accidentally.
As you crack the cover to peer inside, you find that the book is still in pristine condition. The text is hand written calligraphy of highest quality- the aged images of places and people are all crafted carefully and with great detail.
Great love and care went into creating this book.
As you continue to flip through the pages, you begin to realize that it is not a history book, not a religious text, or even an informative book.
This book is a fairytale. A story book.
You begin to read. Within moments, you can clearly see the scenery in your head- hear the characters speaking amongst themselves, and feel the magic of the story flowing through your veins.
You can see it- the world, the people, the beasts- all of it as if you were standing just before them.
You begin to feel dizzy, as though the physical world around you were spinning and shaking. Lights dance across the corners of your eyes.
Are you imagining things? Why can't you look away?
Your vision slowly fades away and you feel yourself fall, the book slipping out of your hands as your awareness vanishes entirely.

When you awaken, you find yourself lying beneath a tree, miles from any civilization. The ruins are nowhere to be seen, but the night sky above you is illuminated by a stunning aurora.
You come to realize that you can't be anywhere in your own world any longer.

The fairy tale is now your home. How will you write your future here?

As you look around your new surroundings, a woman appears behind you. It is her voice that draws your attention- without speaking, you would never have known of her presence.

"Greetings, traveler. Welcome to my fairy tale- I am Daypaw, the fabricator of this book. Now that you are here, return to your previous life is, lamentably, impossible." Her sadness for the situation seems feigned- non existent, at best. "Survival here is simple. There is no hunger, no aging. You will never want for anything that can never be in this world, as you need only harness the creative power within yourself to thrive here. You will find no doors you can not open, no rivers you can not cross. However, by law of this universe, there are certain feats that simply can not be accomplished."

  • Please, for everyones sanity, try to stay literate.

You absorb the information as the woman relays it to you. She seems quite content with herself, and continues speaking with you. "This fairy tale is forever incomplete, always at the beginning and end of its self. However, if you are unsure of where to start, I will provide you with a short glossary to assist you in getting your bearings. Once you are ready, proceed to the last page- this is where your adventure shall begin."

She kneels in the grass, and begins writing with her fingertips across the ground- as her fingers pass over the blades of grass, golden script appears. You read it carefully after she finishes, but before you can present any questions, you find yourself again alone below the tree.
The author has vanished.

You find in the early pages of the book a collection of scribbles. Were these left by the author? They seem to indicate changes and modifications made to the world around you- perhaps it would be wise to keep an eye on these, some seem recent. It might be nice to know if your new expansive prison were going to implode or burst into flame.
There seems to be documentation from ages ago indicating that pages have been destroyed. Nice to know.

As you wander the pages of the book, you find evidence of formal gatherings held by the author if this prison. There are two sorts of records in the script- the type that awards a prize, and the type that is done purely in celebration or for fun.
You find yourself questioning the sanity of this authoress- why hold an event within a book?
Perhaps the others trapped here find some merit in the idea; who knows, if you're here long enough you may just give into such insanity yourself. Even if you can have anything you want from a material standpoint, you can't fabricate bragging rights.
Note to self: Beat someone at something.

There are presently no contests running. Check back at a later time for updates or new information :3

Further exploration of the early pages of the book yield an interesting find; a cast of characters. These must be the other people trapped here, as far as what information the author has gathered on them. Perhaps with this information you can find others more easily. There even seems to be information about the author herself.
You briefly ponder whether or not tracking her down would be worth the effort, then realize that this is a book and she could easily relocate before you can get there.
If you're going to be stuck here for a long time, perhaps it would be best to see about having your own information added here so that others may find you as well.

The Author
Daypaw
Daypaw created the book in which you are now trapped in a time unknown and for reasons undisclosed. She has left no mention within the book of means of creation, though dark arts were likely involved. You wouldn't be trapped in a book if there wasn't something magical about it. Her biography in the beginning of the book indicates that she often visits ruins and seas within the boundaries of the book, and that she has a fondness for the dragon and wyvern characters that roam the world. The faeries are also a favorite of hers.
It is noted that she is not always present within this world. Does that mean that she knows of a way out of the book, or that she has a connection to the world outside? Perhaps to other worlds beyond your own?
There is very little written about her personal life, if she has one.

Delving further reveals information about the setting of the book. Places created by others, where they dwell mostly- as well as some other areas that you are able to explore in the pages that have been written before and since your arrival. None of the information is particularly detailed- but there in an interesting note.
To reach any destination, you need only wish yourself there.

Nufornia - Written contribution by Rivlen
The area in which you first appeared seems to be called Nufornia. Beyond the tree where you began your journey here, the area is hot and receives little to no rain. There are hills all about that are rumored to be filled with gold, and the surrounding basin is bordered with vast gray mountains, over which a vast ocean can be found. Despite the climate and lack of rain, there seems to be a great deal of forest and natural life here. There are many forms of indigenous wildlife detailed, including;
Coyotes
Reptiles of all sorts
Mountain Lions
Bears
Pigeons, Ducks, Hawks, and Owls
Rabbits, Gophers, Raccoons, Squirrels, and Opossums
Cows, Pigs, and Horses
The entry also details natural disasters to include mudslides, wildfires, and earthquakes. The tree under which you appeared does not seem to be native to the area, possible coming from further north- and there are notations that it is rumored to be the largest tree in the world.

Talon's House - Written contribution by Daypaw
This entry is short, with no detail of any sort. There's not even any writing- it's just a simple two-dimensional box and triangle drawing of a house on a piece of notebook paper that's been taped into the index. There's a few stick figures drawn around the lawn.

You find bookmarks between some of the pages. They seem to mark interesting passages written in the pages, and interesting strings of events that have caught the authors fancy. There doesn't seem to be any particular value here beyond entertainment value, perhaps the author is attempting to chronicle the portions of the story that she enjoyed?

Nothing here yet <3~ Check back later.

There are footnotes at the bottoms of some of the pages. They seem to explain terms, names of minor characters in the story, names of minor places. Probably a good source of reference material if you ever find yourself questioning what is happening on the pages beyond where you are now.
It would also seem that, in addition to vernacular and data, any questions that others have asked the author relating to the book have been scrawled here as well.

This section is basically for any Q&A that happens to pop up along with anything that recurs and might need explained for new participants.

Upon flipping to the back cover of the book, you find a glossary. It seems that the author has made note of places she likes to visit when she isn't here.
Great.
She traps you in the book and then tempts you with places you can't go.
Way to go, author.

This section is reserved for links to other locations here on Gaia that I enjoy visiting. None of these links will take you off-site.
