Did anyone go to Gay Day at Great America or Pride in San Francisco?

Ehh, I would never go to a gay parade. From what I've seen, it's just a bunch of homos walking around, kissing eachother and holding signs. With seems degrading in a way. Plus, there's nothing to really be proud of. It's not like as though achieved some great feat just by being gay. But I could be wrong. *shrugs*

Nah, I totally agree with you. I was just curious as to who went and who didn't.

you're starting to get on my nerves. You haven't done anything wrong, but you sure are... I don't have appropriate words.

While it's true that some people have forgotten the meaning of Pride and just use it as an excuse to be flamboyant and crude, that's not what it's about. As you said, being gay is not an accomplishment. But there are several associated with it. Pride is about our achievement in accepting ourselves as different. Pride is about our courage to face the world as who we really are. Pride is about valuing the community we have, the network of support and understanding, and the unique subcultures we have. Pride is about our right to stand up and be recognized as people. Pride is about hope and building a better future for those who will follow us.

Now, now, Vague. The fact is Metabolic and Jeff's view is gaining support because people are forgetting and simply using Pride as a day that they can shock the masses. People are getting use to the idea of GLBTs in the streets, and isn't that what we've always wanted? "We're here, we're queer, get use to it!" It was just eventual that people would become too use to it, bitter and sick of the whole thing.

On the other hand, you're right. Coming out, both in the literal and figurative sense, is still important as a show of support, even if people are just looking for a good time. Legalized discrimination still exists, and the civil rights movement will continue long after the issue of "same-sex marriage" settles. There's still the transgendered, the full protection as a minority, the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policies of the world, HIV and AIDS. There are still issues the support must be rallied and attention drawn to. I find it degrading to those suffering if we did not bring these issues to the public eye.

So... you won't go to a gay pride parade because you know what it's like... but you're never been to one either.

Anyone else have a logical dilemma with this statement?

Now, now, Vague.

I was looking at that post right on top of the asinine comment in the rejection thread.

Can we leave the attitude at the door please? And unfortunately, I do not agree that people are getting used to LGBT in the streets. Although a handful of heteros are simply getting annoyed with Pride every year... its ONE day. If they were used to it they wouldn't be so damn bitter about it.

Now I am no way near an advocate for a lot of the things that go on at prides, but I do believe that all that bitterness and anger will subside as your grow up. When I was 18 and first moved to LA for school (Go Trojans!) I remembered absolutely hating those guys who you would dictate as "flamey." I think its one of those things that you've been conditioned to reject being closeted growing up. What do you guys think?

No, but I watched one in the city near me. It wasn't so good. I guess we have more lesbiens than gay men. And the men that where there where obviously closeted because they where wearing clothes that they wouldn't be recognized in. But I saw a friend so I didn't feel so alone while watching the parade.

I think it was Taiwanese Pride participants who wore masks so they couldn't be identified in pictures or media. They have good reason to, when their everyday lives hang on a thread and it really is their only time to be unabashed about who they are. It's just ironic that people would liberate themselves, only to hide their faces or some other disguise.

Gay Gay at Great America was on May 28, and San Francisco Pride was June 26 and 27. ...And I don't even live in the U.S. Ah, the joy of Google!
