Well, this guild sure has been dead lately. I come, fellow fans, to ask a question which is probably going to be difficult to answer. However, I'm pretty sure whatever you guys can come up with will make more sense than what I have.

In my YYH/IY crossover, there's a tiny plot point involving the origins of Yusuke's family. Due to this, I need to know what year Yusuke was born. I suppose it makes sense to count backward fourteen years from 1992, given that he was fourteen in that year, which would make his year of birth 1978. Does that sound about right, or does anyone else have a better way of calculating it?

For that matter, when do you think Yusuke's birthday is? (This isn't necessary for the fanfiction, I'm just curious.) I think it's possible that he celebrated his birthday in the six months that he trained with Genkai in the first saga, or that it was never mentioned in the series. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned in any paratext, either. Anybody have any ideas?

I'm not sure. A quick search in Japanese leads to this on Yahoo Answers Japan (AKA chiebukuro/Bag 'o Wisdom) asking about Yuusuke, Kurama and Hiei's Birthday. They got a really detailed reply. I'll translate it below:

I don't think those three's birthdays are mentioned.
It can't really be helped.

But we can guess at what it might be.
Before Yuusuke went to the Makai to meet Raizen, he said something like "Even though it's my birthday tomorrow...(I have to go)" to Keiko.

With that in mind, I think Yuusuke's birthday is around May.

When he was fighting Sensui is was around April (because he was promoted to the next year in school) [Note: The school year in Japan starts in April], Shori (Kurama's mother) remarries in July, and I'm guessing Kurama goes to the Makai two months later than Yuusuke.

In other words, it's like this:
April: The gang fights Sensui, and then live peacefully for a while.
May:Yuusuke promises Keiko that he'll go the next day to the Makai(His birthday)
July:Kurama's mother's wedding and then Kurama goes to the Makai.

When Kurama goes to the Makai they said it was summer vacation, so I'm guessing. It might be late May to early June.
Anyways, don't think that my reply proves your guesses wrong or anything!

Other than for Keiko and the seven psychics of the Chapter Black arc, Togashi gave no official birthdays.

Though I agree with the explanation Bokusenou gave, I have trouble thinking of Yusuke as a Taurus. I'm convinced his rising sign must be Aries. xD

Huh, I never really got into astrology.
My Western Astrology sign doesn't sound like me and my Chinese Astrology sign sounds like my complete opposite. sweatdrop
Is Yuusuke like an Aries? (not sure what rising sign is...)

Your sun sign - which is what most people mean when they talk about their astrological sign - is your core, internal [so to speak] personality. Your rising sign, which is determined by your time of birth, is what you act like on the outside, or how most people perceive you.

It's probably just me, but Yusuke definitely acts like a fire sign.

[By the way - the reason your astrology signs might not sound like you is because there so many more planetary influences acting upon you than just your sun sign. Sun sign descriptions are general and do not take into account one's moon sign [how one feels emotions], etc., etc. Same with Chinese astrology - depending on the element of the year in which you were born, your personality can deviate from the sign.]

Huh, that's interesting. The only astrology-like thing I've done that was almost completely right(none of them have been completely right sweatdrop ) has been my Japanese-style blood type personality. You know a lot about this stuff, don't you? 3nodding

Astrology is one of my secret obsessions [which is strange, considering I also have a deep fondness for its scientific counterpart, astronomy].

If you are interested in a more extensive [and therefore hopefully more accurate] astrology profile, may I direct you to the free one at Café Astrology located here?

Yusuke TOTALLY acts like a fire sign. (I'm pretty sure Kurama is a water sign.) It wouldn't surprise me if he was an Aries. Thanks for all the discussion! One question: if the Japanese school year starts in April, then do they still have summer vacation in June and July?

Thanks! I'm not that into astrology but I do dabble in it for fun from time to time.

Edit: Read it. While some of it is is really right, some of it seems off or even contradicting...often if seems as if it's talking about me during my teenage angst phase.
It was definitely interesting though.

InkMistress, yes they have summer vacation but it starts on July 20th

...I'm suddenly very, very glad I live in America. Only six weeks of summer break would make me cry. crying

As for the astrology thing - I try. xD I feel like a lot of reports are contradictory because while they analyze the influence of each planet separately, they don't merge them together and explain their combined influences, or tell you which side wins out. Which means no report will ever be completely accurate, but hey.

I find astrology amusing because according to the principles of numerology, my Life Path number is 11, which means I'm very spiritually aware and bound for greatness. xD [Actually, most of my readings seem to be convinced of this too. Maybe this is why astrology's still partially alive - it caters to the ego of the person.]

@ InkMistress:
Kurama could also potentially be an air sign - perhaps an Aquarius or a Libra [but definitely not a Gemini].

STOP!

One thing to keep in mind before we jump to conclusions is the different seasons of in Japan and how the show was westernized. It could very well be that they added little commentaries, "April Showers," and such just to make the show more appealing as a dub. If you look at the Japanese sub, it might be completely different and never mention any of these. Therefore "A pretty summer wedding" could very well be in December for all we know.

No, the manga agrees that Shiori's wedding was definitely in the summer. Despite the Americanization of both the dubbed manga and anime, facts and timelines tend to remain the same. [And the manga remains fairly true to the original, because Funimation just edits gratuitously.]

Also, keep in mind that Bokusenou used a Japanese source, thus ridding us of any American bias. I believe that Bokusenou also favors the Japanese versions anyways.

Yes. While Shiori's wedding MIGHT be in the summer, it does not necessarily mean it is in JUNE/JULY/AUGUST. Remember that in Japan they have different seasons in different months than us.

Well I dabble in astrology for fun but don't really take it seriously.
It's not that it can't be true, it's just that I find at best some parts to be true and some not, and saw this show were two people were given a astrological reading and the first person believed everything but the second person said that some parts were true but some weren't and people tend to focus on the true parts. Also, as you mentioned some things said, like "You are a very deep person." could work for anyone because no one thinks they are shallow.
I definitely believe you're bound for greatness though. smile

About the Japanese seasons, while Japanese kids will often ask "Does your country have four seasons?" and Japanese people oft believe there's something unique about their seasons, it's more a kind of patriotism (Usually called Nihonjinron or the "Japan Argument" ) the seasons there are the same as in the US. True in Hokkaido (Japan's Alaska) or Okinawa (Japan's Hawaii) the seasons would be a bit warped compared to most of the US, but the seasons and months are pretty much the same. It's not like Australia or something.
