Santōryū – Three Sword Style
Style Description: Santōryū is a way of sword fighting that deals with the wielding of 3 katana; one in each hand and one in the mouth. There are many different techniques for this sword style, including high speed attacks (Shishi Sonson), direct hit attacks (Oni Giri) and air compressed projectile attacks (Hyaku Hachi Pound Hō). The Roronoa Clan are world famous swordsman who are originally from Kirigakure, uses this style. The Roronoa Clan's fighting style revolves around an unusual sword style that uses three swords instead of a single sword, but in the course of learning the clan's users will undergo training requiring them to learn how to be proficient with not only three swords, but one and two and even learn how to fight with their bare hands, these sub styles are known as Nitōryū, two sword style, Ittōryū, single sword style and Mutōryū, bare handed style. In adition to these three sub styles the high ranking shinobi and masters of this style have developed a genjutsu that takes their style beyond the bounds of all known physical limits, it is known as Kyūtōryū.
Style Basis: Taijutsu (Speed, Stamina, and Strength)
Clan Abilities:
- Learns Taijutsu Techniques/Styles 2 posts quicker
- Taijutsu is stronger by one rank
- Inhuman Strength, Speed, and Stamina
- Can react to attacks with the reflexes of a Sharingan user, but cannot predict movements.
- Movements of Santōryū are hard to follow even with Sharingan, but the attacks can still be copied.
- The Clan Members will exibit great chakra control when channeled through their swords during the techniques of Santōryū ( -1 needed chakra for the performance of Santōryū techniques only)
- Clan members have chakra reserves greater than that of normal shinobi due to their advanced training in strength, stamina and speed (basic chakra being added to by 3 points at academy, 6 at genin, 9 at chunin, 12 at jonin, and 20 at Kage/Sanin level)
Stage One - Mutōryū
Genin
Special Techniques:
• Tōrūnendo (トルネード, Tornado): This technique is a direct variation of a Santōryū technique. The user spins around with their hands held into fists, creating a dragon-like tornado that both strikes and blows away the intended target or targets. By the time the user reaches even Nitōryū the user will have achieved enough power to bust apart a tall establishment all the way through the topmost ceiling with this move and is one of the Roronoa Clan's most powerful attacks. The lack of swords means the technique is not a cutting technique, and is more used to send the opponent flying. However, getting hit by one of the users arms as they perform this move could also send the unlucky recipient several feet skyward. This was first seen being used by a grand master who saw the necessity for unarmed combat.
Stage Two - Ittōryū
Chuunin
Special Techniques:
• Ittō-Ryū Iai: Shishi Sonson (一刀流 「居合」 獅子歌歌, One Sword Style Draw and Resheath Technique: Lion's Song) Placing the sheathed sword vertical held to the user side, along the users body. The user will then listen to the "breath" of his opponent and attack rapidly unsheathing, and coming out with a strike from right-to-left/left-to-right(depending on the users preference). The blade is held back-handed making the slash having immense strength. The user then sheaths the sword with great speed. The Roronoa Clan can cut anything with this technique up to the hardness of steel. This technique is performed back-handed as opposed to from the waist while still having a standard grip on the sword. Typically this technique is used only when the Roronoa Clan needs to cut through metal. This move was his very first Ittō-Ryū attack to have been created by the clan.
• San-Jū-Roku Pound Hō (三十六煩悩(ポンド)鳳, Phoenix of the 36 Earthly Desires): The user will first cross their sword arm over their chest, raise their sword told hold the blade horizontally across their shoulders with the tip of the sword angling down, the users off hand being placed around their sword arms wrist. Through the use of acute chakra control and Chakra Flow the user channels their chakra through their swords blade. This extends the reach and the cutting edge of the blade. The user will then bring their sword around performing a circular swing that then fires a crescent of compressed chakra whenever the blade is swung, launching the compressed chakra blade projectile spiraling towards the target. This attack uses the users chakra itself to slash the target from a distance.
• Hiryū Kaen (飛竜火焔, Flying Dragon Blaze): Using one sword wielded typically in the left hand while right hand gripping his left wrist for support (or vice-versa if chosen), the user then jumps high up into the air slashing his opponent with a violent downward angle of his blade going from left to right (or vice-versa). The opponent then bursts into blue flames radiating from where they were slashed. The depiction of a chinese dragon in the flames as the opponent is engulfed in the flames. The sapphire-blue flames are said to be as hot as the sun, and ignite at the focal point of the slash. The flames are extremely powerful, said to be capable of burning through anything in their path, even smothering regular flames easily. The blue flames are said to burn for three days and three nights, and cannot be extinguished with water or any other normal methods. However, the flames burn fairly slowly, allowing anyone struck by attack an opportunity to remove whatever clothing or body parts have been caught ablaze, while the initial sword slash still having it's effects. Use of the technique also puts a great deal of strain on the user, usually causing their hands to bleed.
Stage Three - Nitōryū
Jounin
Special Techniques:
• Sai Kuru (犀回, Circling Rhino): Zoro holds his swords in front of him with his grips inverted on the hilts the blades pointing up, like rhinoceros horns, and then spins the blades quickly before coming around with wild slash to either side.
• Nitō-Ryū Iai: Rashōmon (二刀流 「居合」 羅生門, Two Sword Style Draw and Resheath Technique: Castle Gate): A dual sword drawing technique so powerful that it can split large obstacles in half. The user will get low to the ground almost neel and draw their blades from either side with crossed arms lifting up drawing their swords with immense power and speed, then sheathing them just as quickly, able to split a large solid in half.
• Nana-Jū-Ni Pound Hō (七十二煩悩(ポンド)鳳, Phoenix of the 72 Earthly Desires): Same principle as the 36 Pound Cannon. Holding their two swords horizontally above the shoulder, and then performing a circular swing that launches two large compressed chakra based projectiles spiraling towards the target instead of one, making it twice as powerful. Due to the shear force being exerted behind the attacks the user may strain their arms, if not pull a muscle. In either case the fight will continue as the training within the style is much more brutal.
• Nigiri (弐斬り, Double Slash): A stance where two swords are held parallel so that the tips are pointing to his right or left side, this move is a pre-requirement to perform the combination of strikes; Tourou, Outourou, Hirameki, Samon and Maguma. When these moves are used in succession both the speed and attacking power double, while subtracting from the chakra amount being needed to perform by one.
-Tōrō (登楼, Climbing a Tower): The user will dash towards teh target in the stance are sent upwards while jumping as Zoro swings his swords in Nigiri stance and then perform two quick and powerful upward slashes.
-Ōtōrō (応登楼, Reply Climbing a Tower): Coming out of the Tōrō . the user will bring the blades back over eitheir shoulder and toss them forwards in downward aimed slashes. Having let chakra flow into the blades the user will send two chakra blade projectile slashes downwards towards the target.
-Maguma: (魔熊, Demon Bear): While falling after performing Ōtōrō, or jumping into the air for using the technique alone the user swings their swords downwards to attack the intended target, with the gravity complimenting the force of the attack. Upon landing on the ground after executing the strikes, upon success or failure the user will jump back.
-Hirameki (閃, Flash): whether landing from jumping back from Maguma final part or performing the technique alone, the user will imbue their blades with chakra once more and send two chakra blade projectiles forward after swinging both swords from the left or right side.
-Samon (砂紋, Sand Drawing): The user will then again send two chakra blade projectiles flying diagonally down from left to right (or vice-versa) after swinging both swords from the left or right side.
Stage Four - Santōryū
Saanin
Special Techniques:
• Oni Giri (鬼斬り, Demon Slash): A three-way simultaneous slashing attack. The user crosses their arms across their chest and places the blade in his mouth horizontally. The user will then approaches the target at high speeds and cut through by swinging the swords outwards in an "X" like pattern to cut across the targets chest, resulting in a descending diagonal-crossing slash from both swords while the mouth blade performs a horizontal cut from either the left or right, depending from which side of his mouth did the user position their sword's main blade. If one can block the front most sword then, at that instant, the entire technique will be rendered useless. Doing so however, requires an enormous amount of strength.
• Tora Gari (虎狩り, Tiger Hunt): The user will crosses the blades he holds in his hands his over the blade he holds in his mouth. The user will then swing forth a forward descending slash with all three blades. At close-range, this can incapacitate at least two average foes at once.
• Santōryū Ougi - Sanzen Sekai (三刀流奥義 三・千・世・界, Three-Sword Style Secret Technique: Three Thousand Worlds): The user holds the two swords in their hands at an angle against each other, with one sword having the point angled up and the other down by a simple flipping the sword around in the users grip. The user then creates a small inverted triangle by placing the butt of one sword against the underside of the cross guard of another, creating the inverted triangle shape with the hilts of his swords. The user rotates the held blades rapidly in opposite direction while running towards their opponent to create momentum; they then slice upwards at the foe with full speed and power using all thee blades. This is the ultimate and strongest technique of the Santōryū. If it is used successfully the technique can deal three enormous slashes over the targets body.
• Tō Rō Nagashi (刀狼流し, Bleeding the Wolf): At close-range, the user will lean toward the opponent, using the two held swords to block the opponent's attacks while twisting their body around as they continuously move to approach and dodge other attacks (if there are any) and eventually cut through the opponent's stomach with the third sword.
• Tatsu Maki (龍巻き, Dragon Twister): Zoro spins with his swords to create a dragon-like tornado that both slashes and blows away the intended target or targets. By the time the user will reach this stage of ability they will have achieved enough power to bust apart a large buildings all the way through the topmost ceiling with this move. This is one of the Roronoa Clan's most powerful attacks.
• Yaki Oni Giri (焼鬼斬り, Burning Demon Slash): A variation of Oni Giri. A three-way simultaneous slashing attack while the blades are enfused with chakra making them burst into sipphire-blue flames. Should this attack connect, the opponent will also be set on fire. The main flaw of the technique is that the user will also be burnt while using it, but due to the intense training the user is more immune to the flames effects also making them more resistant to fire based jutsu.
• Ushi Bari (牛針, Bull Horns): The user will cross their arms tightly over their chest and hold the blades in their hands jutting out forwards with the butt end of the hilts against the users forehead making the blades ressembl a bull's horns with the third blade still held in their mouth. They will then execute a multi-strike running attack with all swords.
• Gazami Dori (蟹(ガザミ)獲り, Crab Seize): All three swords are horizontally parallel, the user holding the sword in their moth close to the target with another sword in their hand below and the last above their targets head. The user will then suddenly clamp down on the target like a crab's claw for a guillotine like effect with the two held blades making them strike into the third with a move that would normally cut a person's head off.
• Hyaku-Hachi Pound Hō (百八煩悩(ポンド)砲, Phoenix of the 108 Earthly Desires): Same principle as the thirty six (36) version of the same attack. The user will hold their two hand held swords horizontally above the their head, one blade perfectly horizontal the other slightly slanted downwards crossing the blade while the other blade is held in their mouth in the same direction. Through the use of acute chakra control and Chakra Flow the user channels their chakra through their swords blade. This extends the reach and the cutting edge of the blade. The user will then bring their hand held swords around performing a circular swing and a side slash of the blade held in their mouth that then fires a crescent of compressed chakra whenever the blades are swung, launching three compressed chakra blade projectiles spiraling towards the target. This attack uses the users chakra itself to slash the target from a distance.
• Karasuma Gari (鴉魔狩り, Demon Crow Hunt): The user will lift into the air and perform multiple slashing technique with great speed, the hand held blades held with inverted twisting the neck.
• Gyūki Yuzume (牛鬼勇爪, Cattle Demon Brave Hoof): The user will turn to the side and hold their swords so they are positioned all tips pointing towards the enemy. The user will then lunge forward and strike their target with an immense impact and force causing great injury.
• Enbima Yonezu Oni Giri (艶美魔夜不眠鬼斬り, Charm Demon Sleepless Night Demon Slash): A stronger variation of the Oni Giri technique. A three-way simultaneous slashing attack. The user crosses their arms across their chest holding their blades to either side horizontally the tips pointing upwards and placing the blade in their mouth horizontally. The user will then approaches the target at high speeds and cut through by swinging the swords outwards in an "X" like pattern to cut across the targets chest in a descending diagonal-crossing slash from both swords while the mouth blade performs a horizontal cut from either the left or right, while twisting the swords during the slashes for added force, resulting in this attack striking multiple opponents instead of one. If one can block the front most sword then, at that instant, the entire technique will be rendered useless. Doing so however, requires an enormous amount of strength. During its use, the user will generate a sapphire-blue tinted steam which makes their swords look like they are bending and also adding a cover to the rapid movements.
• Ichi Gorilla (一剛力羅, One Gorilla): The user will flex their left bicep to superhuman strength from just the just shear intense training. The user will do this in preparation for Nigori-zake.
• Ni Gorilla (二剛力羅, Two Gorillas): The user will flex their right bicep to superhuman strength from just the just shear intense training. The user will do this in preparation for Nigori-zake.
-Nigori-Zake (二剛力(ゴリ)斬, Two-Arm Strength Slash): After using both Ichi and Ni Gorilla, Zoro swings his swords so that the tips meet when they hit the opponent, with the swords in his mouth and left hand being held at the same level and the right's hilt dropping at an angle. The pun here is that nigori zake also means 'unrefined sake (Japanese Rice Wine)'. The literal translation of this move means 'two great-strength decapitation'. This was first seen being used against Kaku. This attack is powerful enough to disperse Kaku's Bigan. When he use these attacks, his biceps seem to get almost 2 or 3 times bigger, being it similar to Urouge's ability of increase his muscle mass. His arms also bulk up likes Chopper's while using Arm Point. In the Viz Manga, this is called Two Gorilla Cut.
• Hyō Kin Dama (豹琴玉, Leopard 'Kin' Ball): The user will hold one blade with a normal grip, the other with the blade backwards, and the final blade in the mouth, then move forward while jumping forwards and turning to the side spinning in the air forming a buzz saw like effect with their blades. This is basically a feinting maneuver, so even if the target manages to read the pattern of this attack and move out of the user's trajectory, the user will still be cut as they careen past the target with the added length of their blades and chakra blades extensions.
• Daibutsu Giri (大仏斬り, Great Buddha Cut): A series of horizontal sword slashes that are powerful enough to cut apart a small building. This is the first new Santōryū technique Zoro has used since losing Yubashiri. This move can also be performed vertically. This was first seen being used to provide Sanji with "ammunition" for his "Jenga Hō" technique.[3]
• Yasha Garasu (夜叉鴉, (やしゃガラス) Night Yaksa Crow): Zoro spins like a rolling wheel at an enemy with his swords, eventually coming to a head with a tornado-like move while continually thrusting the swords at the opponent. This attack leaves cuts shaped like crows' feet. This was first seen being used to carve up Oars' arm. Yaksa is the devil which embraced Buddhism.[4]
Stage Five - Kyūtōryū
Saanin
Special Techniques:
• Kiki Kyūtōryū: Asura (鬼気 九刀流 阿修羅, Demon Spirit Nine Sword Style: Asura): The technique that allows the Roronoa Clan to use Kyūtōryū. This technique is the only Genjustu within the Roronoa Clan. The user will manifests its chakra to a dark aura emanating from the user. The full activation of this technique will caused the ground to darken several meters in diameter from where they stand gust of wind emitting fro them blowing dirt away from around their feet. The user will then become engulfed in a dark mist like aura that then solidifies into physical form, or so it would seem, forming into a being with nine arms and three heads known as an Asura. This style of attack is the most powerful of all Roronoa techniques. The technique utilizes chakra to a Genjutsu to trick the target int thinking the user has more arms and swords for attacking and blocking and can be used for blocking, when in actuality this is just an illusion used for intimidation and distraction.
- Asura: Ichibugin (阿修羅弌霧銀, Asura: One Mist Silver): The first technique with the style, holding the swords so the blades are pointing towards the victim, the user will leap towards the target, powerfully slashing them with all nine of his swords at once afterwords ending in a position where all the swords are held in a way to make them look like they're fanning out. This technique is used to make the user think they are being struck somewhere while really striking somewhere else, or if the target knows they are jutsu keeping them guessing as it would be impossible, unless being a sharingan user, to tel which blades and arms are real and which are not.
- Asura: Makyūsen (阿修羅魔九閃, Asura: Demon Nine Flashes): The user approaches their intended target and slashes upwards vertically using all nine swords and ends with a stance where all nine swords are in a wheel shape with Kyūtōryū a few meters away from the opponent, the wound is similar in shape to the sword stance. Due to the Genjutsu nature of teh attack the user will begin to fade all nine arms and swords in and out from sight while performing this attack making the attacks actual effect invisible until a few seconds later.
