Lately I've been noticing how the "matching for the sake of matching" has kind of been lost. A while ago you could work any items as long as their shade matched.
Now things like facial expressions, themes are in evidence.
Also, certain items have been seen all around despite their price and rarity (Oisin's blessing, I'm looking at you).
What do you think are the styles that are in Gaian fashion now? What items do you think are considered to be in nowadays?

I think matching for the sake of matching has died with the AvA. 3 Even if you just want to match, you have to have some sort of good description, theme, story or people don't pay attention to your entry. So, I think that the matchers have given in and at least pretend that they have a theme.
I don't care about theme. An avatar does not have to be legally blind in order to equip a White Cane. But~ themes are all good too! I just don't mind matching for the sake of matching either.
Facial expressions truly are in right now. Long ago, we didn't have as many contact and other items that create facial expressions. So, they weren't as important. Now, we have many awesome items for facial expressions. I think people are having fun with facial expressions. It might get old and commonplace eventually, but not yet.
And, personally, I've been slacking on my matching for the sake of matching. That came about for a few reasons: I used to equip anything as long as it matched. This meant that the overall shape of my avatars was usually bad and had no flow. I'm more conscious of flow and shape now. (Which has led to me using less companions, plushies, wings, petals, etc.) Now that I pay more attention to shape, my avatars don't match as well. I'll use an item with a better shape (and is a close match) over an item that has an awful shape (and is the better match). I still don't care about theme, but I sacrifice a bit of matching for the sake of good flow. I love playing with expressions. o wo I don't have contacts in every color. So, sometimes I'll use a contact with the perfect expression over a boring contact that matches. (I need more contacts. XD ) I also now have blush! For the most part, my avatars stopped matching perfectly after the Masquerade blush arrived. I wanted blush for yeeeeeaaarrs. And now that I finally have it, my face just looks too empty without it. So, I might equip a rosy pink cheek glow on an avatar that otherwise has no pink. It just depends on how much I care about matching on that specific outfit.
....As far as what's in fashion, I don't really know. I do know that expression is in. Complex detail is in. If the detail is not complex, the person has at least made sure to accessorize.

Another tendency I've noticed is that you don't see as many pure demonic/angelic avatars. But a lot of princesses, dolls and cute in general.
Is that from the items being released with less demonic/angelic theme but a lot of cuteness?

dreamish Another tendency I've noticed is that you don't see as many pure demonic/angelic avatars. But a lot of princesses, dolls and cute in general. Is that from the items being released with less demonic/angelic theme but a lot of cuteness? Maybe the ATers finally complained enough and got enough people to change? XD I still see a lot of angelic light blue and gold avatars. And I see a lot of demonic red and black avatars. They just aren't clutterballs of items with names like "angel" and "demon." XD I guess there are more options now?
I go in and out of phases where I play zOMG. Right now I'm playing it again. To me, it looks like the style there is... either really poor or very rich. But the very rich just equip a bunch of sets or expensive items to show off. And the very poor run around with the cheaper MCs and EIs, trying to show off. These "styles" have been around for years, but I still can't believe that people can waste such good items. Even the cheaper outfits can look so much better if they had some sort of theme or style. x .x; So, on zOMG, the style is having no style. XD; And, well, the other style is wearing "i am" poses. (But that's nothing new either. > <;;; )

Theme and character incorporating matching seems to be in style - along with a few must haves (which drive me nuts to some degree). Lately those "Porridge" hairstyles and the Pale Marionette seem to be the in-thing for everyone who can afford them, and Oisin's eyes are eternally popular with the girls - esp. paired with the Hime or porridge hair. I think for girls "cute" is in.
I have seen a few good ultra-clutter avatars about, and zombies are also pretty popular.
Popular through for the forums at large vs. the AT is pretty different.

I just wanted to report something. Lately, I was trying to get a general sense of, well, not so stylish avatars. Clicking through the CB, I just found lots of people wearing that very simple, nonmatching style. But... with some sense of style.
I loaded into several Rally layers. I did not see one "gangsta" outfit. Maybe I'm logging in at the wrong time? There used to be an overwhelming amount of gangstas every time you logged in. (I used to enter for the Sour Patch Kids prize wheel.) Now everyone is... ninja. XD; Well, all the guys are wearing a form of the starter ninja set. And all the girls still have on bathing suits and/or short shorts.
And zOMG... well... zOMG's still pretty much the same. It's a general mix of styles.
Rally shocked me though. Are we witnessing the end of the gangsta trend or do I just keep loading into Rally screens that aren't the norm?

Also certain shades are in fashion. They correspond to shades of new premium items. And not many older common items work in those shades.
My example is the Reve gold. It's like a dull gold, more brown than yellow. Almost no old gold items match it.

Good one. :] There are a few items with the reve gold color... but they mostly exist in EIs or CIs. XP We definitely need more gold shop items that color.
The color trend I've noticed lately is beige. I swear each CI gets at least one rare beige item. And it's not easy to work with that beige unless we have all the other expensive RIG items. x .x; And before that, mint was very popular. :} For that much, cyan/mint is still a popular accessory color on RIG items. I hover around the GCD the most. And since they like to wear the latest items, the GCD is very beigy~
<.< >.> The current trend I see at this exact moment is more steampunk and pirate avatars because of the summer event involving airships~ :3

I totally agree about that "you have to have a theme to go with matching" thing. I just realized that I've started to work with that as well. Matching the colors is still my priority, but at the same time I want to have a theme or a cool look of some kind. Most often an adventurer or a video game character.
And I also agree about the steampunk and pirate avatars. I've started to see all kind of steampunk avatars around! o.o At the same time I think the genre has gotten new twists, like new colors and item combinations and especially more sophisticated styles. And steampunk seems to have been bred with other themes as well. Very interesting. o.o
