It was drizzling yet again. Backus didn't even know where he was going in all this rain. His dark fur was even darker and his eyes seemed to gleam against the dark colors. His ears were perked, ready for any kind of danger that might happen to cross his path. He wasn't a fighter, per say, but he would fight if someone started something with him. He was not a weak wolf, and the chips in his ears confirmed that, along with the scars in his back towards his rear and shoulders.
He got those from a dog fight, trying to save a couple of his friends. Backus wore them proudly, though he never talked about them. Even so, Backus had no place to sleep tonight, no place secure for food or water. He was probably on pack land or something; the scent would be washed away by the rain. That is why he was on alert. He shook himself off despite it still raining and he was standing right in it. In the middle of the field, he looked around, wanting to see some kind of game to eat. He didn't even care if it was a baby rabbit! That's how hungry he was.

Rain had never been enough to keep Sil from wandering about outside her pack's boundaries, it was in fact a bad habit that had persisted throughout her growth - from pup to adult.
Now that she was older however her adventures had a tendency to have a quieter air to them - or maybe she just had a better capacity for getting herself out of trouble then she had before. In any case it wasn't unusual to find her trotting along through the woods or skirting the meadow despite whatever weather mother nature decided to throw her way.
As such she found herself concealed within the woods and watching the progress of a dark unknown male in the meadow. She'd become more wary as she grew - a bit less likely to run up to every wolf she saw and insist on making friends, with growth came the awareness of danger after all. Still this fellow looked right miserable she thought to herself as she watched him shake the water from his pelt and Sil could never just pass by someone who might need some assistance - or at least that was the justification she used to make up her mind and step out of the trees.
Trotting across the slick grass Sil hopped over a quickly forming puddle and made her ways towards the black wolf. "Hello!" She called out to him "Do you need some asss..." She started to offer some help when the slick grass was sudden;y coupled with a patch of slick clay and Sil found herself skidding across the unstable footing like a wolf on ice.

Splashes of water that didn't sound like rain caught his ears and he looked over and arched a brow. Running his way was a darkly colored female who seemed harmless. His suspicions were confirmed when she started talking, that is, until she slipped up and started stumbling around like she was on an ice patch. His eyes went wide and he ran toward her to help her balance herself. When he got there, without managing to slip himself, he attempted to right her and gave a weak laugh.
"It would seem you needed assistance more than me," he said, voice raspy from not using it. Swallowing a bit more, he pulled back when she was righted and not in any more danger of slipping, only to slip on a rock himself. Down the big male went into the mud, on side and all he did was give a grunt and a groan.
Sitting up, Backus shook himself off again once he was a descent distance away from the female and shrugged. "Or I need it, too."

Silhouette let out a small yelp of surprise as she went skidding across the mud, thankfully it seemed the dark wolf was a gentlemanly type cause he ran forward and helped her find her footing again. "My Her..." She started to say with a laugh when the poor beast went down himself "..o" she finished the phrase a bit belatedly as she looked down at him in the mud.
"Are you alright?" She asked him, hoping that he hadn't hurt himself - that would not be a good start to this meeting, five seconds into meeting him and she'd managed to slip..and make him slip in return. Way to go Sil! She mentally cheered herself on wryly "At least the rain will wash the mud away?" She offered in a hopeful fashion, as though searching for a bright light in this otherwise dismal start to their conversation.

When she questioned him, he just gave a sheepish kind of look and a nod. "I'm fine." It was true. Nothing was hurt, except maybe his pride for right now; tripping over a rock in front of a wolfess. Yes, that was a way to make a friend. He stretched him out again and gave a slow groan at the sore muscles. Of course Backus was sore; he'd been traveling for as long as he could remember. "Backus. ..I'm Backus." That came out kind of clipped and quick. So he was nervous. Females weren't exactly his forte.
The first female Backus helped was tied up and he had to fight off dogs to free her with her mates help. He kind of found he lied the girl; but it never went anywhere, naturally. She was faithful and he wasn't going to wreck that. Then there was lovely last girl. She was going to be the one, he could feel it. But that went absolutely no where, as she'd taken off without a word.
He hadn't liked any other female since; he tried not to get his hopes up. Backus had been ...not really hurt, but wounded. Shallow wounds, so he was wary. No, Backus wasn't giving up on love. He just wasn't looking for it right now.
"I.... I mean... Sorry."

Well she was certainly glad he wasn't hurt, that would have put a real damper on her day - and probably his too. She wasn't sure if he was upset with her for making him fall in the mud or he hadn't liked the small joke she'd cracked about the rain washing the mud away but he didn't sound very happy as he introduced himself.
Then again those groans could indicate he'd hurt himself more then he was willing to admit. Males! They were such a prideful lot, never wanting to admit when anything was wrong - especially in front of females. If she wasn't afraid of further wounding his pride she might have scoffed at the silliness of those thoughts. Besides he seemed to have thought his clipped tones might have offended her because before she could respond he was apologizing for something and that was the only thing she could see him apologizing about.
"Silhouette" She told him with a slight wag of her tail "But everyone just calls me Sil" She continued and because she was a curious sort - you never know where you might find an adventure or two! - she had to ask him "What were you up to before I - well before I made you fall in the mud?"

Why was he like a teenage puppy right now? Awkward, second guessing himself, not knowing what to say, really. Backus hated himself right now. Sil? That was a pretty name. In a way, it fitted her. She wasn't as dark as himself, much like a silhouette was to a shadow. He gave her a small kind of smile and a wag of his tail to show that he really was fine and not in any sort of pain, other than pride, but that would easily be fixed.
"I was..." What was he doing? "Trying to find something to eat." And his stomach rumbled to make his point. A flash of lightening showed her his eyes were brown and yellow, and they were both, unblinkingly, trained on her face. "I hadn't eaten today, before the storm rolled in, and now all the pray is hiding." It was so true. He couldn't find anything now, and it just made him want to curl up and whine like a little pup.

Well if he had still been sore he must be feeling better Sil thought to herself, or at least he certainly seemed like he might be in better spirits now...although by the sounds of it quite hungry. "Well that is easily fixed" She told him with a smile "I could use something to eat myself actually if your up for looking together?" She questioned - she didn't want to sound too presumptuous but it just made sense to team up. Two wolves on a hunt were always better then one.
"There is a place not to far away where Pheasants like to hide in the underbrush - maybe we can startle a few of them into our jaws" She suggested after a few moments of thought "Or theres always fish back at the river if you want to head into my packlands. It will be fine - everyone is quite friendly there" She assured him, some wolves were anxious to wander to close to packs she knew.

He hadn't eaten pheasant in a long time. To Backus... it sounded like the perfect thing to do. "The birds would be quite alright. ...I'd like to not get myself wet." Of course he wouldn't let her know he was scared of any and all packs. He didn't know if he'd ever join one, unless he'd fathered pups and the female came to him for help. Maybe then. Shaking his head of those thoughts, he looked to the female and gave her a huge smile.
"Well, Sil... Why not... lead the way to these birds you've talked about? You've made me remember I was hungry again." Sure, leave it to Backus to forget that he was the one who'd said he was hungry. So it was a flaw in his character to have short term memory loss. Everyone had something, didn't they?

A belly full of food always made everything right to Sil's way of thinking and so with a cheery wag of her tail and slight bob of her head she turned about and trotted off in the direction of the Pheasants hide out. She was rather hoping for a nice plump one herself - it would be a welcome change from the rabbits she normally hunted on her own - and the fish most of her pack seemed so fond of.
"They're not to far off" she assured the male whom she assumed would have followed her "just on this side of the woods where the bushes are dense and low. They like to hide in them" She told him - and though they were fast to get into the air once startled Sil was confident that with two of them it wouldn't be to much trouble.
