Name: Tag Swagger

Negaverse Alias: Lieutenant Osumilite

Nickname: Mr. Ron Burgundy (mockingly by his friends)

Age: 30

Birthday: July 29

Sign: Leo

Gemstone: Ruby

Blood Type: AB

Fav. Food: Filet mignon with a glass of red wine.

Hated Food: Goat balls. He’s tried them. They taste like goat balls.

School: Adult

Hobbies:

Journalism: Tag is a reporter for Destiny City’s local news station, WKDC, Channel 6 News. Channel 6 News is a very popular news station, but many of its broadcasts and Tag’s segments are commonly criticized for its yellow journalism and tabloid-esque focus. Channel 6 News is to Fox News as DCNN is to…something someone can put a grain of trust into. He’s a pretty well known reporter in the city, noted for his good looks, charisma and dedication to the story. He is typically assigned to crime or investigative stories, and in his interviews doesn’t shy away from asking the tougher questions if it means getting a more cutting-edge story.
Journalism is not just a job for Tag, it’s a major influence on his life and aspirations. His fascination with journalism began in high school writing for the school newspaper. He quickly discovered how the news media influence the minds of the public, and this type of power was very intriguing to him, so he continued on in this path. He graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism from DCU while maintaining an internship at WKDC. His internship became a paid job and he quickly rose through the ranks after scoring well with several female demographics and covering groundbreaking stories. He’s content with the position he holds now, but is willing and ready to do anything it takes to rise further in the ranks.

Picking up Chicks: Tag is young, single, attractive, charismatic guy with local-celebrity status. So, yes, he gets around the block.
He enjoys the single life and having one-night stands. He doesn't rule out the possibility of girlfriends, but he doesn't get involved too seriously in a relationship. He's just looking for fun and sex, and if things start getting serious, something usually goes awry and he ends up single again. He's a little bit of a commitment-phobe, but he wouldn't admit that.

Hanging Out with his Son: Tag has a two year old son, Liam, from a past relationship. Liam lives with his mother, Chelsea, a few blocks away from his apartment. While Tag wasn’t ready to raise a son, he found that Liam has been a blessing in his life. His relationship with Chelsea has lost whatever romance once existed, and was never too serious in the first place. Tag is a good father to Liam, but does not hold custody, only visitation rights. As such, he does his best to show to Chelsea that he is there for the both of them, and he's developed a strong platonic relationship with her that extends outside of their time spent with Liam.

Basketball: Tag plays basketball with his friends in a court across the street from his apartment building. He’s a decent player but the worst of the guys he plays with, but it’s a good source of fitness and a good deal of fun. He played some intramural basketball in high school, and at DCU he just played with his friends in no official league. Basketball is much more a form of exercise and social bonding than it is a truly passionate hobby of his own, but it is something he does often.

Virtues:

Charismatic: Tag knows how to tell a story in a way to captivate his audience, or just to entertain a group of friends. He uses his words carefully, and likes to think that he can sweet talk his way out of trouble. And no, babe, those pants don’t make you look fat because there’s nothing out there that can make you look anything but the most beautiful woman on this planet. He panders to what he thinks people want to hear. Tag has recognized the importance of being charming, because it can help him get the things he wants, and takes pains to come across as such.

Hard-Working: Whatever the case may be, Tag will put in all his effort. Morals and integrity can be set aside when Tag is assigned to a task. If he’s told to cover a story about the city’s oldest dog’s birthday, he won’t be happy about it, but he’ll make one hell of a story out of it. Luckily, these types of stories are beneath his ranks, he is usually asked to investigative or crime stories, in which he gets right into the action and reports the story as best as it can be told. Tag gives his work his 110%.

Social Butterfly: Tag is still young, and he's single, so he enjoys to go out and have fun. He is very comfortable in social settings and is always open for having fun, provided that he doesn't have any deadlines at work that could interfere. He loves meeting new people, especially fans (and female ones even more so), and hanging out with old friends. He's very outgoing and open to a lot of experiences, living life to the fullest.

Charitable: Tag donates a fair amount of his earnings and time to local charities (often underprivileged children or medical research) and often pushes to sponsor these charities in his broadcasts. Ever since Liam was born, he’s donated much more, and more frequently to children-oriented programs. His motivations for his charitable donations aren't too selfish - he doesn't do it for the publicity or attention, but a bit of self-gratification. As a newscaster, he inspires to influence the world, and donating helps him feel that he is doing just that. By giving back to the community and helping others, he feel he is making some impact on the world and asserting a level of power and influence. He does care about the charities he donates too, he has compassion, but his donations are his way of inflating his own ego and demonstrating power in a healthier manner.
As a young journalist, he isn’t exactly swimming in cash (although he came from a well-off family that helps him out when he overspends), but as a Negaverse agent he frequently loots his victims to take their cash. One may call that reprehensible, but Tag would argue that he uses the money to give back to the community and its not like the victim was going to be using that money. That’s a fair rationalization, right?

Flaws:

Power-Hungry: Tag’s a pretty well-known reporter now, but he’d kill to become an anchorman. Don’t tempt him. He is obsessed with the idea of moving up, getting ahead, and being the top dog in every aspect of his life. He desires to be the alpha male in every room, and he has no problem flushing out his competition. He has betrayed the trust of many people he has formed a professional relationship with in order to get ahead. His thirst for power has left him with very little tact. Did you just lose a family member in a violent accident? You can count on Tag waiting with his cameraman to capture your initial reaction and ask you for an interview. Tag’s image is very important to him, but he sometimes forgets that his reputation is dependent on other people, and is capable of neglecting their feelings in the name of a good headline.

The Douchebag Factor: You know that trait some people have, its something annoying about them but you can’t quite put your finger on it? But whatever it is, it causes you to label them as a douchebag? Tag is one of those individuals. He’s over-confident, flaunts his success, fully aware of his good looks and fan-following, loud, obnoxious, chauvinistic, and pretentious. While Tag doesn’t mean to alienate (he wold rather people like him), his overconfidence and pretentious attitude might turn some people off. He has a compulsion to one-up people in conversation and boast about himself, and doesn’t realize that what he is doing could annoy anyone.

Full of s**t: The man has charm - but is what he saying truthful? Not always. He uses his charm to exaggerate stories, and often even flat-out lie. With his beautiful white smile, handsome face and carefully-chosen words, it can be hard to detect when Tag is being honest or not. Hell, sometimes he hardly knows. He isn't a pathological liar, but he allows himself to believe in the mistruths that he tells, it eases his conscience. Because if Tag were to tell the truth, then truthfully babe, you do look fat in those pants - but its not the pants that make you look that way. He has no issue or guilt using his charm to tell a lie if it means getting what he wants, and he's grown so accustomed to it that its practically an impulse. This sort of behavior has gotten him in trouble in his personal life, damaging several of his relationships.
As a journalist, if a story isn't that interesting, it is his job to make it interesting. Never content with a minor special interest piece, he'll beef up the story by slanting it in the most exciting light possible. He'll get the facts out there, but he knows how to spin them just enough to make a story of the city's oldest woman blowing out her birthday candles sound like the world's oldest woman defused a bomb using only her breath. For bigger stories that are more cutting edge, he'll do his best to tailor the interviews he does with the right sort of leading questions and false dichotomies to guide happiness witnesses into providing him with the quotes that are just misleading enough to sound horribly damning once the station gets through with editing them.

Self-Focused: Tag is mostly out in the world for himself, and he doesn't mind stepping on the back of others to serve himself. Many of his actions are motivated by his self-interest and he has a very manipulative mindset. Behaviors such as his charm and charitable donations are often fueled by self-serving factors. His selfishness can be found in his reluctance to selflessly help others and his vocalized self-concern whenever a situation arises that may impact a group he is included in. He tries to mask his selfishness and manipulative nature with charm, but it is not impossible to see past. Consequently, maintaining long-term relationships is a challenge as he is suspected of ulterior motives.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Eyes: Cool, captivating blue-green eyes.

Hair: ‘Dirty-blonde’ hair. Clean cut, masculine.

Face: Strong facial features. General attractive, charming looks.

Civilian Clothes: Button down shirt, maybe a few buttons unbuttoned, and dark jeans.

--NEGAVERSE--

Challenge: Coming tonight to you live, this is your demise!

Uniform: Form-fitting, fashionable, designer-looking suits. [1][2]

Weapon: Non-functioning Microphone → Functioning Microphone → Super Amplified Microphone

Non-functioning Microphone: Just a non-functioning microphone. Could be plastic, or could be a real one that simply does not work.
Functioning Microphone: The microphone is real, if it wasn't before, and now functions through magic. However, it works just like a normal microphone. He can shout into it.
Super Amplified Microphone: The microphone's is magically amplified to be super-loud and can cause screeches or give headaches. The noises can be distracting.

Why Tag?: Tag would be a good fit in the Negaverse because, as a news reporter, he has some media power which influences the population. A news reporter is an artist in their own right - their words tell a story that the public believes. He could be of great value to the organization. He can diffuse anxiety about the happenings in Destiny City - with teenagers getting beaten up, Senshi super heroes, citizens falling into comas, etc. - and manipulate the facts. A public relations manager of the Negaverse, one might say. And remember folks, don't trust the Senshi.

Tag in the Negaverse: Tag power hungry & manipulative flaws would definitely start showing their ugly heads more and more when Tag is corrupted. He likely wouldn't try any power-plays on his Negaverse authorities, but may try to undermine his lieutenants. His loss of humanity would also impact his work life and his thirst for power may come to full force there, trying ever harder to get to the top, with less concern of consequences.
As for Liam and Chelsea, Tag will do the best he can to ensure their safety. He loves and cares for the both of them, and is likely to try arranging deals with authorities to ensure their safety for as long as he can. Furthermore, his authorities can easily manipulate him by threatening to harm his family.
Most of his Negaverse work would likely entailing gathering intel and making sure the Negaverse has a strong influence over the population. If he knows of someone who knows too much, he'll hunt them down and steal their starseed, but he isn't the type who would start out by running around causing mass terror.

Tag and his Son: Tag's son is his greatest weakness. He's a father who cares deeply about his son and isn't allowed to spend as much time with him as he'd like to due to only having visitation rights. He is extremely protective of both his son and of Chelsea, and would do anything to ensure their safety. As such, he can be very easily manipulated if Chelsea or Liam's lives, reputation, safety or livelihood are at stake.

HEY SPY WUZZUP.

Let me start off by saying that Ryan is absolutely hilarious, and definitely passes the bill of 'would I want to rp with this character?' (which, really, is ultimately what any of us are shooting for). Reading his profile, I get a very strong sense of who this guy is, how he acts when he steps into a room of people, etc etc etc, and that's a great start. Most of what I have in terms of critique are going to be in question form, because all in all, it's not a matter of what you've got, it's what you don't, and I think a little bit of clarification and depth could make this character all the more charming.

You mentioned in his hobbies section that he likes 'Picking Up Chicks', which, granted, seems like a very in-character thing to do. A good question to make this explanation longer than a sentence is why? Does he like the attention? Is it just because he enjoys the sex? Is there any particular reason he won't commit to something more long-term (i.e. Chelsea)? Basketball's another hobby that could be expanded on: does he just play it, or does he watch the games/keep track of any teams/collect paraphernelia? Maybe he was on the intramural team for DCU? The more in-depth you get about their hobbies, the better you can use them in potential rp situations (and not have to backpedal later on if you realize that the character is going in a different direction than intended).

His virtues blend pretty well, but again, I'd be curious to see why he's so charitable. Does it make him more attractive to the ladies? Does he do it to counteract his natural douchebagginess? The fact that he donated before the birth of his son means that there's some other motivation, and that'd be interesting to develop. Another thing to note is that the stampers tend to steer people away from characters that are 'naturally liked', so while it seems fine to me, that's an area where you may want to tread carefully.

I'd like to see another flaw, because right now the biggest problem with Ryan is that he seems to be a typical charming rich a*****e with a narcissistic complex (see: Tony Stark and many other such characters) and his flaws only seem to reflect that stereotype. The fact that one of your flaws is called 'The Douchebag Factor' doubly shows this, and I'd really like to see how Ryan is unique in that aspect. A suggestion here would be something like "Insincere", because I imagine that as much as people like him, they'd have a hard time taking someone who only ever tells them what they want to hear seriously, and it could even come to compulsive lying. Also, amongst one of his flaws needs to be a weakness, so that's something you need to look into.

There's not much to his Negaverse concept, which really, if you want him as more than a Civilian, you're probably going to want even another post on Negaverse-type information. Will he act any differently as Cummingtonite? What will corruption do the enhance the more 'evil' aspects of his personality? What place will he serve in the Negaverse. It might seem clear to you (I'm guessing you plan to have him sneak subliminal messages into the media and manipulate the public that way) but it's super helpful to the questers if you just spell everything out for them so that they can get a good look at your line of thinking and especially your plans for him in the future. Several people in-shop already have had their plans for their characters denied because of not double-checking with the staff, so even intrapersonal plans matter!

Like I said, the concept for Ryan is awesome, he just seems unfinished. If you go through and ask 'why' for everything, it should help to fluff up your profile a little more and ultimately it'll make for a more well-rounded character. Good luck with your quest! And if you get him, I could totally hit you up with plots for Zircon. biggrin

Hey Spy!

Wow! I nearly died reading his name. I don’t know why it didn’t click the first couple times I’ve seen it, but that’s hilarious! In fact, I agree with Fallen. He’s a very entertaining character! I’m going to try and not repeat the things that Fallen has already mentioned, but I agree that it’s more about what you don’t have than what you do, because I see nothing wrong with what you already have. I love how I can envision him as a real person I might meet at a bar.

One major thing I thought about when reading his profile is if he’s an “over-reacher”? The kind of person that wants so much but ends up pushing it too far and failing in the end. The main examples I can think of (which you may or may not have read) are Christopher Marlowe characters, such as Doctor Faustus, the Duke de Guise from Massacre at Paris, and Barabas from The Jew of Malta. Someone who wants so much that they don’t really understand the concept of accepting what they have, and it ends up hurting them (or getting them killed, as is the case in my examples). I feel that this could work as a flaw if you’re looking for ideas.

I would also love to hear about why he’s so Charitable. Is it because he wants good PR or is it because he really does care? Does he pretend to care but doesn’t or doesn’t care but pretends to? Or… Cares and shows that he cares?

I think his last three hobbies can be developed more. Maybe a bit more of the history in them, such as picking up chicks. Has he always been a lady’s man or in the past did something prevent him from being as attractive? Just curious because one of my friends is the biggest lady’s man I’ve ever known was a larger child and wasn’t really used to all the attention.

What do his friends think of him? Are they really friends or are they only friends because they are riding on his good fortune? Is he loyal to them, or would he take starseeds from them if it meant he would get promoted in the name of the Negaverse? What if his son had a valuable starseed? Or would he try and have Liam be recruited, too?

I really do like the idea you’re going with for having a news reporter and a microphone for a weapon. It’s very clever, I believe. I also think you might need to go a bit further into why he would be a good Negaverse character. Good work so far! <3

First off, I like his readability. He does seem like a realistic character in the sense that he has a job, family, and could very well be the guy that lives next door.

Hobbies:
With his son, what is his relationship with his mother? Strained? Polite? Is he careful about what he does/says when he's around her? Other then that, hobbies seem rather well done.

Virtues: The first two I don't have any problems with but the last one throws me slightly. When paired with some of his flaws, I actually see more of some of his actions as rather self serving in the sense of how he is manipulative. Is he willing to use his charisma and ability to manipulate to further the charities he personally support or does he fall back to the 110% factor for hard work? It seems to come into a bit of a head but with his manipulative and power-hungry nature. Donating to charity seems more like a thing that falls under hobbies IMHO but, I can see how it is a virtue.

Flaws: Power hungry and manipulative are pretty easy with how he is formed when paired with charismatic.
Douchbag factor I love because IRL you do encounter a person that you just hate for no particular reason. And with charisma, and how you describe his pride and arrogance, this comes off rather well.
Full of s**t: Because he's a reporter, he's supposed to know all the facts, and with his manipulation, does this mean he's careful when picking and choosing how to present a story to get the highest ratings, (picking and choosing what to let the public know, aka basically going against what an ideal journalist does)? Can he straight up lie to your face and smile while saying it? When he lies and fabricates stories is he smart enough to cover his tracks and his a**? Can he makes things up on the spot to explain why X is going on?

Another reason he might be good for the negaverse is as a reporter and a manipulator/fabricator, he'd make a very good 'Secret agent' to snoop as a civilian for clues about the senshi and even possible identities. Reporters also tend to work with law enforcement, so he might be able to get info there. What I'd like to know is how does he make the starseed quota if he's mostly a source for information? Is he expected to just as much as say, A fighter based Lt, or is he expected to do more along the lines of work as keep making the 'terrorists' look bad and try to find out from police records about senshi sightings and possible routes they patrol?

Revised!

~ Firstly, changed his name from Ryan Gould to Tag Swagger. Tag Swagger is a much douchier name - and its catchy like a news reporter's name usually is.

~ Addressed the other issues above! Added more to Chelsea and Tag's relationship, revised his Charities virtue, his Full of s**t flaw, and expanded on the "Why Tag" and "Tag in the Negaverse" sections.

'Manipulative' doesn't count as a flaw the way you have it written -- you're showing that he's GOOD at it, and in spite of the intentions that makes it out to be a virtue! XD Flaws are characteristics that make people look down on your character -- it's something they're bad with or a way they're bad at dealing with others, etc, etc
PostPosted: Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:51 am

I don't know if I would call being manipulative a virtue, even if he's good at it? I see a virtue as something that's admirable about a character, not something despicable. A pathological liar may be an excellent liar, but I wouldn't call it a virtue.

I could emphasize what lengths he'd go to to manipulate others though, if that would help make it more clear as a flaw? He'd do anything for powers, he's obsessed with it.

Quest thread bump~
PostPosted: Wed Dec 08, 2010 11:07 am

Tag's definitely a very vibrant character - I love the personality you've given him and you've detailed it wonderfully.

I also love how you've given multiple sides to him as well - he's a sleazy womanizing reporter who's GOOD at his job but at the same time, he's struggling to remain and maintain the status of Responsible Father. He gives to charities, but it's self-gratifying in doing so. Very nicely done.

Out of curiosity - what happens if one of his embellished stories gets called out for being... well, embellished! Does he take the blame, does he dish out or redirect the blame - what does he do?

And I think what Mouse means by her comment on the manipulative flaw is that flaws are generally seen as having a detrimental effect on that person's life. Being clutzy, insecure, etc are all flaws that affect the person - being manipulative and getting your way with it more benefits the person than it hinders them. The fact that his manipulation has the potential to get out of hand COULD be considered a flaw - if he gets power hungry or determined enough, bam, things have gone out of control and snowballed, causing himself trouble. Maybe he's been so used to manipulating people that it's become second nature to him? Or maybe his manipulations, when they start to snowball, are more easily noticed and he's called out on them?

The term 'manipulative' is seen in a negative light but it can be beneficial to the manipulator if gone unnoticed by those he's manipulating. It's one of those toughies, I know.

I see what you mean. I've now edited the form to split up "Power Hungry & Manipulative" flaw into a "Manipulative" virtue and a "Power Hungry" flaw.

As for him getting called out for over-embellishing, it depends on who he's being accused by. He'll try to charm is way out of it, and if he needs to he'd probably pin it on someone else - likely someone who he views as a competitor. Otherwise he may take the blame if he knows that he can use his charm to avoid consequence.

~ Changed name from Osmium to Osumilite, as Osmium isn't actually a mineral.

~ Removed "Fatherhood" as a flaw and moved it as a character-side note as "Tag and his Son."

~ Removed "Manipulative" as a virtue, and reworded "Charismatic." Added "Self-Focused" as a flaw.

I think this quest has a lot of potential, but there are a few things that I keep coming back to as I read it. My main concern is that he comes off as too amazing, too successful, and too prosperous for a 25-year-old who is fresh out of college with a young son in an extremely competitive and difficult-to-make-it profession. All of my notes pertain to ways to help make him lose some of those larger than life! qualities in exchange for more hang-ups and drawbacks.

ON THE CIVILIAN:

I really adore the fact that he works for the local news station. It's a great job, good source of many RP experiences. My hang-up is that twenty-five is pretty young for a ~*~BIG NEWS~*~ reporter. I can definitely buy that he does reporting, but my impression from reading your description is that he is a super successful one, which is what gave me pause. Reporters tend to be very poorly paid, especially younger ones, and nowadays, the average age of an American journalist is 41 years old. Pay rates are fairly low for newbie reporters. With a Bachelors and Masters, he graduated college probably one year ago, maybe two. So he is likely making less than $30,000, which can't be easy with a kid to boot. If you made him older, I think it would make a little more sense. Otherwise, I think his hobbies look really solid.

In terms of his virtues, I think you might want to tweak the 'charismatic' trait, specifically the bit about him being able to talk his way out of anything. That seems too overbearing, and it places the assumption on whoever he interacts with that they will be charmed by him. I'd just go back in and try to write it in a way that is less polarized.

The 'charitable' virtue runs into trouble with the bit I mentioned above about his salary. News anchors for major stations make the big bucks -- but a fresh-out-of-college on-site reporter for the local station? He would not be rolling in it. He would be far from rolling in it. Being a reporter is like wanting to be an editor. You start out with a crap salary and crazy hours, but you don't care because your field is really competitive and you just want to do achieve your dream so badly! Personally, I think there is a lot more potential for a financially-strapped Tag Swagger than a rich-not-a-care-in-the-world one. Does he have student loans too? I just think these are things you might want to consider to make him feel more realistic. Making him rich is convenient, but it is more interesting (and probably accurate) for him to be struggling, or at least not Mr. Moneybags.

Moving on to flaws -- I'd revisit "Power-Hungry" and make it more clear how this hurts him. Right now, it reads as something that makes him super good/determined at achieving what he wants. It could almost be called "By Any Means Necessary" and bumped up into the virtue section, which kills it as a flaw.

Quote:
Its not that he is an a** hole or mean to others, he just carries himself in such an obnoxiously perfect way that makes you want to punch him in his face.

In this line, you say that Tag carries himself perfectly. This is much too strong. In general, I like this flaw as a conceptual part of him. He is THAT douchebag who thinks he is so perfect and so charming, but he actually can really alienate people and overstep his bounds. I'd rewrite this flaw to make those inherent down sides to assuming that everyone will be ~*~charmed and impressed~*~ by him all the time. I feel like that is where his most significant character flaw lies.

In his 'full of s**t' flaw, you say that he sometimes makes up facts and lies in his news reports. This is not something that he would realistically be able to do without getting caught (and fiiiiired)! This ties into some of the earlier concerns I raised about how you framed his job.

In general, I think all of his flaws could stand to be more negative. Most of them seem to have a positive spin on them that all feeds back into why he is so charming and so good at his job. I think you need to go back in and really highlight what he does that really causes his a lot of conflict, pain, loss of relationships, etc etc. You said he can't commit to women -- has he ever been able to commit to anything other than work? It might be good to bring this up as a potential flaw. He is the guy with all the friends... who is completely alone because of the false charm he employs so often. Just a thought~

ON THE NEGA:

I think his weapon works, and the challenge fits it well. Please go in and detail the magical aspect of his microphone (unless it really is just a normal microphone) as well as the extent of its sound attacks so that it can be eligible for stamping. Things might get confusing with the Knight class and their weapon rules, but Negas are intended to use things that are more conventionally weapon-like. (Though Nealite had a mirror with slight magical properties that became a mirror on a staff.) So maybe he goes from a broken plastic microphone, to a steel/hard metal one that he can shout into, and then his final is an even more ornate, larger microphone that can send out an amplified blast of sound.

I am not necessarily the best at Nega weapons though, ahah.

THIS WAS LONG. But I hope it helped get your mind rolling on where to take Tag next! Please let me know if I can clarify anything.
