The setting sun painted the sky various shades of reds and purples. It was a canvas that any artist would envy. And one that most bystanders could admire. Ellial was one of those bystanders.

Earlier he had ventured away from the watchful eye of the mare watching over him, and had opted to do some exploring. Now he stood on a grassy hill, his cyan eyes watching the setting as if he were in a daze. For his young mind, the colors were so entrancing. He felt that he could watch the scene for hours if he were to be uninterrupted.

There was no denying that sunset was beautiful, and this particular one more so than some, but the little filly who was wandering the grassy plains and enjoying the taste of freedom had no real interest in observing this natural phenomena. No, she was more interested in exploration, in being able to travel where she willed without the fear of having her adventures curtailed by an overly protective mother.

Though she may or may not have passed through this area on one of her many escapades, her mind was often not on enjoying the surrounding landscape as much as it was on fleeing possible pursuit, so she was taking a pleasant stroll dismissing from her mind that which she really couldn't care less about and taking her time to admire that which managed to catch her attention- which might range from a pretty pebble, to an unusual plant, or a colorful insect or bird- one never knew what might catch her fancy at any given moment.

Walking up an incline, she noticed a colt watching the sky as if entranced. What was so interesting about the sky? Was there a flock of birds or something flying by? Or maybe it was an Angeni. She sighed wistfully. Ever since hearing stories from the annoying flutter as her mom had affectionately dubbed unca Laures, of these mystical beings she longed to meet one. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she moved to stand slightly behind the colt.

"What's so fascinating up there?" Zorana tilted her head back to look up at the sky and saw nothing special or unusual.

The sound of a foreign voice jolted the young colt from his trance like state. After all this time, he had grown quite used to being snuck up on, but that feminine voice is what startled him. It was not the voice of his usual stalker. His very much male stalker.

With prancing steps, the colt turned to face the female. His attention instantly caught by her horn. "Oh wow! You've got a stick sticking out of your head!"

Questions shot through his mind like little bullets. Zipping by so fast, he had no time to focus on just one. Does that hurt? How did it get there? Was it magic? Did she use it to she use it to spear fruit? Or others... would she try to stab him?!

Everything went silent in the young colt's mind, his cyan eyes appearing to glaze over.

Zoey's head jolted back in surprise, and offense. Had this colt never seen a unicorn before? A stick, really! She snorted as she walked closer.

"Are you really that dense?" Zorana couldn't help but ask. After all, his reaction wasn't very promising. "I," she tossed her head proudly," am a unicorn. That so-called stick is actually a horn."

And while she was taught that a unicorn's horn was the source of their magic and special abilities- that it was meant, most of all- to heal, but could also be used as a weapon. Naively she had told her maman that she could never see using her horn to hurt someone. But right now, she was very seriously reconsidering her stance on the matter.

A stick. Of all the mundane and insulting objects he could have chosen, that was probably the most degrading.

Then she shook her head. Though the colt showed poor manners in making such a tasteless comment before introducing himself, she was raised to be above such things. Taking a deep breath- or ten- she managed to calm down, though her voice remained cold.

"My name is Zorana. What is your name?" She even managed a credible bow, despite her feelings.

Not noticing that he had offended the filly, the colt simply stared. His mind soaking up the offered information like a sponge.

A unicorn... he'd heard mention of such Soq, but had never seen one. Deirdre had said that they were healers. That must mean that they're nice if they other, right?

As a child's mind tended to do, Ellial's mind drifted off into imagination land. A land where he himself was a healer that all respected and adored. The day dream soon faded into gray, and was forgotten.

The bowing of the filly before him drew his mind back to reality. Unbidden, his body moved to mimic the action. "Oh uh, I'm Ellial. It's nice to meetcha!"

Though her lip curled at the colt's manner- he was just so crass and different and common- she remembered her lessons. She was the daughter of a lady, thus she should be above the type of behavior she had thus far been exhibiting. If her maman had been around, she would have not dared.

Taking a deep breath, and snorting her forelock away from her eyes, Zorana decided to try and start over. "Pleased to meet you."

There, the words weren't as hard for her to say as she would have thought. Perhaps there was some merit to her maman's insistance on manners after all. Maybe he'd be more willing to answer her first question, now that introductions were over.

"You were staring so intensely at the sky earlier... Why?"

In contrast to the mare, Ellial had never been taught manners beyond the standard please and thank yous. His young mind knew nothing of the world of proper etiquette and refinery. He'd pretty much been left to run free.

"The sky?" murmured the colt in a clueless manner. When had he... oh! Right! Excitement shined in his cyan as he shot his gaze back to the colorful sky. The colors having darkened since he began speaking to the filly. "I was looking at all the colors! They're always so pretty, and I like watching as they vanish, like they're going to bed as the stars wake up."

He went silent for a moment, and then as an after thought, he added, "I always wonder what makes all those different colors..."

Zorana gaped, as soon as the colt's gaze returned to the sky and he was engrossed. Though it was a severe breach of conduct, and quite unbecoming besides. He was enthralled by the simple setting of the sun and the coming of night? But why? What was so great about a sight that was visible daily?

She could not see anything special about it, and in her mind, if one didn't share the same views they were simpletons or not worth her time. There was also the fact that this colt had insulted her quite gravely. Normally, this would be more than enough for the little filly to leave, rude or not. But for some reason, she didn't quite want to write this rather strange colt off just yet.

She sighed silently and stamped her hoof on the ground as she made up her mind. Perhaps the view was more meaningful or special from where he was standing? She took a few steps forward and looked up. Nope, there didn't seem to be anything different from here.

"What does it matter what makes all the colors?" She started imperiously. Then realised how she sounded. "I mean, it makes no difference whether we know how or why, it will happen regardless."

"I'd just like to know." It was a simple answer but true none the less. He wanted to know things simply to know them. What made the grass green? What made water flow? Those questions and much more floated within his young mind, and he hoped to one day know the answers to all of them.

As if often did, Ellial's mind derailed and then hopped right onto another track, the previous thoughts pushed back. Despite having just been talking about the sky, within his mind, it felt like it had taken place hours ago. "Zorana's a pretty name, does it mean anything?"
PostPosted: Sun Jun 27, 2010 7:32 pm

"One can't ever the how and why of everything, so why is it important to know stuff just for its own sake?" Though she was far from being dumb, the young filly didn't see the purpose of trying to know anything or everything. Though that was probably due to the fact that maman tried to force her to learn and know. Not that that was in itself a bad thing, but Zoey preferred learning only things that were relevant to her life and situation.

She blushed lightly as the Ellial said that her name was pretty. She was fond of it herself, but she was unused to getting compliments on it. Her voice was soft as she answered, "It means dawn."

"Does Ellial have any special meaning?" She wanted a moment to recover her composure.

She hated to feel off balance, but that seemed to be the state she was in ever since meeting the very odd colt.

"Knowledge is just something that's nice to have..." Ellial trailed off, the last threads of his attention towards that subject slipping from his young grasp. It was a rarity for his mind to remained focused on one subject for too long.

Dawn. Though he doubted if that information would ever be needed, he filed it away in the depths of his mind. Today seemed to be an education day for him. Or was it evening? Most likely evening...

"My name doesn't have a meaning that I know of."
PostPosted: Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:19 am

Zoey watched as he processed the information, his eyes starting to glaze over again just as they had before the last conversation change. She sighed inwardly, preparing for a new completely unrelated topic to be brought up, hoping that she could keep up. Ellial was rather taxing to talk to but she marshaled her patience and filed away his behaviors, planning to ask her healer mother if it was some sort of illness that could be cured.

"Really?" She asked doubtfully. Then she brightened. Here was a way she could steer the conversation and still be able to keep up. " Perhaps you could come up with a meaning for your name yourself. Something like star gazer. Or one who seeks knowledge. Or something like that."

That... was a great idea! Excitement shined in the young Ellial's cyan eyes as possibilities shot back and forth within the confines of his mind. Young dreamer. The knowledge keeper. The young at heart...

All those thoughts and ideas came to screeching halt as a question rose up. The excitement was chased about by doubt. "Am I allowed to do that?"
PostPosted: Fri Jul 16, 2010 5:05 pm

The filly smiled, feeling like she'd done some good and helped someone for the day, when she saw Ellial's face seem to fall as he felt some doubt and was concerned. What was wrong now? Would it be a problem she could fix? She started to take a step forward when he spoke.

Am I allowed to do that? The question caused Zoey to snort, though she was careful to hide it from him. Was that all? Why should he worry about something so small and trivial?

"Even if it's not allowed, who's to say anything otherwise? It's your name isn't it? You should be able to decide. It should be something that you should be proud of." The young filly's voice took on an imperious tone as she tossed her head proudly. This was something she well knew and understood, now if only he would accept this fact for truth...

The young colt's mind pondered over the mare's words. It was true that it is his name. But what if his path were to cross with someone who's job was to assign definitions to names, and they already have a definition for his name? Would it displease them to know that he had gone ahead and made his own?

And what if he didn't like their definition? Would it be his right to completely disregard it, with this name being his?

Ellial shook his head, willing the fog that circled his mind to absorb his thoughts. As the thoughts faded, his lips curved to form a serene smile.

"I like what you said, 'one who seeks knowledge," replied the colt, acting as if he'd never asked about it being allowed or not.
