Some people might not consider cosplay an art, but idc because I do. It takes serious creativity to wrangle a costume into shape, ESPECIALLY if you sew it.
SO! I need some place to boast about my cosplays, as I'm kinda a noob and coscom doesn't seem like the best place. Plussss... this thread motivates me. It's like, c'mon, finish!
Current Status:
Revving up to start on Gippal. This will be tough, but incredibly rewarding!

x x xCosplays: Current, Dropped, and In-Progress ...in order of appearance.
Misa Amane - dropped, [x]- entirely store bought. Worn at Oni-Con '07 and Anime Matsuri '08. Retired ever since, probably won't go near it again - looking back, I feel like a slut. OTL (itty bitty reference)
Maka Albarn - current, [x] - Coat gotten from a thrift store, turned inside out. Added the cuffs and buttons, sewed down the seams, and voila! I'd like to remake it, but for now it'll do. Skirt, shirt, tie, sweater vest all quite store bought because, uh, dude, who bothers making that sort of thing?
Boots. Oh, these are a continuing nightmare. Currently, strips of white fabric (finished at the edges, of course) are staple-gunned to the sole of the boot. Planning on hot-gluing AND staple-gunning for the next con, because it's a pain when they come undone.
Scythe detail below. (reference)
Hungary (Elizaveta Hedervary) - current, [x] [x] - Entirely sewn. Used a McCall's costume pattern, mushing several styles together and adding the collar and cuffs. Totally freestyled it for the apron - that was really weird to do. This was my first sewing project ever, so the hems are pretty wonky.
Those boots are the best things that have ever graced my feet. Fake flower glued to a clip for the hair (no wig! no wig! just a straightener!)
Worn to Oni-Con '09 and Ikkicon '10. Planning on taking her to A-kon '10 as well. (reference)
England; Pirate Version (Arthur Kirkland) - current/in-progress, [x] [x] - Technically still in progress, but has been worn to Ikkicon. Also entirely sewn, right down to the pants! Used another costume pattern. Sadly I had to use felt for the coat - it's not very accurate or realistic, but it was simple to work with and is much less stifling than the other options.
Added a plume and a rose clip to the hat, because no pirate is complete without a plume'd hat!
The vest is brocade & satin, and the cravat is silk. The cravat was seriously the coolest thing ever to make - 1/6 a yard of silk, finished the edges, and voila! One dollar and one hour. The wig is ill-fitting but suitable.
As a costume is NEVER finished, I want to re-do the trim and add epaulets next. And a friend might help me make a cutlass.
(reference)
Thorfinn - 90% complete, [debut] - Took about a week. Used osnaburg and faux fur, along with a piece of pleather and a piece of microsuede. Sewed using a Burda pattern and a LOT of ingenuity.
The boot covers were probably the most difficult, using the same materials as the body plus iron-on velcro (oops) and some elastic. The covers were second only to cutting and styling the wig. Which needs fixing. Desperately. (I had two hours to cut and style a Punky S down to the proper length and flatness, okay?) The blades used cardboard, a Goldfish box, paint, and a scrap from an old toy sword.
...yeah, it's ghettotastic. It needs a lot of re-working before it's acceptable to me.
(reference)
Gippal - [planning stages] - Been saving money, about to start trolling thrift stores for good finds, especially for the shirt & jeans. Also about to start pricing for everything else.

x x xOther Sewing Projects
Pea Coat - Yet to begin. Pattern bought, but fabric is still tbd. I intend to make the butt-length one. This'll definitely be a summer project so that I can have it in time for winter.
Skirts - Yet to begin. Pattern bought, but fabric is still tbd. I intend to make several - the bubble skirt, the one with the tie, and one of the long ones.
Crafts: Weapons and Props
Scythe - Maka Albarn. Well, this was a pain in the a**. The pole is 3/4 inch PVC pipe, about 6 1/2 feet tall. I intend to cut that down before A-kon; it's not safe otherwise. The head thing was painfully constructed from poster board, pool noodles, and duct tape. Then the pole and head were spray-painted gray, and then details were added on in acrylics. Then a hole was cut in the head for the blade. The blade was made of some foam my dad brought home from work, cut, then spray-painted SEVERAL TIMES. In fact it needs another layer of red. The blade was inserted into the head then hot glued around. It's shaky but usable.x x x

UPDATE
THIS IS SO EXCITING
I HAVE MY CONTACTS! I'm such a dork, I know - but Maka, Hungary, AND England all have very very green eyes and I am obsessive so I got some green contacts. Acuvue 2 Colours. They're fabulous. And hopefully they'll kill red eye! Because I have blue eyes, I get glaring, awful red eye in every single flash picture I'm in. It's awful, I look demonic.

Cosplaying is totally a art. Doesn't matter if cosplay isn't technically a real word. The little skirts are a bit much in my opinion as well. I have no sewing skills but I love making costumes. A tip: Foam doesn't make very good weapons. Unless maybe foam core board and you could use wood filler or Bondo [Bondo's stronger] to make the sharp side of the blade. Would use a lot less paint, too. I know a few things about accessories and helmets if you want to know anything in that department. I've made 2 helmets, some gloves, and a full body Transformer costume. Your costumes are really neat though.

By the short skirts bit, do you mean the assumption that a short Hot Topic skirt and a fox tail constitutes a cosplay? (Annoying as hell.) Or the ones I've used in mine? 'Cause they're, y'know. Canon.
For the scythe, gah, that thing is a nightmare. The problem with using any wood at all is that it has to pass inspection and the cons I go to have VERY strict weapons rules, so my scythe has to have a blunt blade & tip and have a lot of give.
And wow! I would never dream of making armor like that. Sewing is my thing, I don't really have the patience for anything else.
& thanks very much!x x x

I don't like any short skirt unless it's paired with pants really but I guess I'm tomboy like that. I've never heard of inspection of fake weapons. D8 Why not cut our hands off so we can't punch each other if we want to? Rules get taken too far sometimes. I've never made armor. The Transformer costume is an old school Soundwave made of cardboard boxes. You're going to A-Kon? Me too. I'm entering the cosplay contest with that costume too.

Haha, I can understand that. I actually need to replace my Maka skirt, it's gotten indecently short because I can't stop growing.
WOO A-KON! Maybe I'll see you there and say hi? But A-Kon has an epic, intense-sounding weapons policy. All prop weapons have to go to the security table to get checked and approved. Which means more trouble for me for at least two days.
& haha, cardboard is WONDERFUL. I used it for the first version of my scythe, and if it hadn't gotten so much abuse, it'd still be there.x x x

Go to my profile and you'll be able to recognize me by my A.bot helmet. I'm gonna check out the Gaia thing so I can get some free pizza and maybe a small prize for cosplaying as my avi.

Woah, that is AWESOME! I really love your gloves!
I'll be at the Gaia thing too. I can't resist the lure of free stuff - and maybe a chance to subtly b***h at them about the state of Guilds. XD;

I love my gloves too. Even if they are difficult to remove. Wish I could think of something to 'subtly' b***h at them for. But it's kind of hard to when everyone bitches over every tiny change. Though I am ticked that we get taken to the Gaia page when we have a request instead of straight to the point. But as long as they don't change the layering I think I'll be ok. And woo hoo. 2k redeemable gold cards. I'll take DJs or a halo I can sell to buy DJs please and thank you. [:<

-Claps- I am amazed! biggrin I wish had the time/skill to make cosplay costumes. (BUT since I have yet to go any anime convention..because they were always at the WRONG TIME..it wouldn't matter if i had any skills xp )
I really like the English Cosplay (haven't seen the anime.) It looks very cool and don't worry about the historical details (ITS AN ANIME CONVENTION.) it doesn't matter anywho. 3nodding
