Rosa Sullivan had flaked on the last meeting, leaving Sydney to watch Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland on her own, quietly nibbling on popcorn and sipping on soda. It wasn’t like it was a horrible movie; she had enjoyed it very much, and the reactions from the children as they found their beloved story to be not-so-innocent (and the regretful words from oblivious parents) was just as amusing. But that wasn’t the problem. Rosa hadn’t showed and she’d only notified the tomboy about it long after the movie ended.
Sydney was worried.
She stood at the entrance of the amusement, donning a black jacket with a white design on the front and back, once again drawn by the tomboy herself. Her jeans were baggy and torn at the end, brushing past her knees. A monochromatic cap and beat up sneakers completed the look, undeniably giving her the usual appearance of a lanky lad.
Anxious, Sydney fidgeted and paced, stuffing her hands into the pockets of her jacket and seconds later pulling them out, only to slip them back in soon after. She fished out her cell phone from the back pocket of her pants and flipped it open to check the time. It was only a few minutes after the time the pair had agreed to meet up at, so it wasn’t a big deal. But still, Rosa missing the previous time was leaving the redhead on end.
“She’ll show up. Of course she will! Of course she will . . .” she mumbled to herself.

Rose had not wanted to blow off Sydney, not by any means. She knew that her friend didn’t like others blowing her off. The problem was that Rose had a secret, and this secret was causing her a good deal of trouble. It didn’t seem like a good idea to simply announce that she had (lame) magic powers, but hiding it was becoming increasingly difficult. Most of her bumps and bruises had been easy enough to hide or explain away, but now she had stood up her friend to attend a secret, magical teen hero meeting.
Telling Sydney the truth simply wouldn’t work, so as Rose headed to the amusement park to meet up with her friend she tried to think of a plausible excuse. Jeans and long sleeves easily covered most of her injuries, and since they were her preferred style they wouldn’t raise much interest. No, the only things she had to account for was her slightly awkward gait – magical or not, heels were a b***h to fight in – and her absence.
When she finally felt she had a satisfactory alibi she picked up her pace, waving as Sydney came in to view.
“Hey! Ya miss me?”

Had it been any regular acquaintance of Sydney’s, she would be ready to claw at them as soon as they arrived. She could wait (had to, really), but didn’t particularly enjoy the experience of feeling each second tick into oblivion while she waited the day away, doing nothing.
But this wasn’t just any other person, this was Rosa. This was one of Sydney’s close companions. How could she dare to lose her temper so easily at Rosa? They were redhead and freckled friends (not that Rosa was her only redhead friend, because admittedly, she wasn’t). Instead, she was worried about her buddy’s condition. Was Rosa having family troubles? Was someone bullying her? Or maybe she had fallen in love? But that’d mean Sydney would be like a third wheel to this love drama! As more and more meaningless questions clogged her brain, she stood in front of the entrance, frozen and hunched over as she drowned in her paranoid thoughts.
Then a familiar voice broke her pondering and all her piling questions drained away. “Rosie! Rosie Rosie Rosie Rosie Rosie!” Sydney called out, stretching out her arms. Walking towards the other girl in long strides, it wasn’t long before the taller redhead scooped her up into a crushing bear hug. “Of course I missed you, you silly goon!” she answered, gently placing the other girl down.
Eyes firmly set on the front of the amusement park and unaware of the injuries Rosa had recently incurred, she grasped her hand. “Let’s go, the park is waiting for us.”

Seeing Sydney’s outstretched arms, Rose mentally braced herself for what she knew was to come. Trying to avoid the friendly greeting would only raise questions, but although the bruises were fading, she knew her back was not going to thank her for this. She winced within her friend’s grip, but quickly put a smile back on her face. She allowed herself to be pulled along, her eyes darting from Sydney park as she dug for decent conversation topics.
“ Yes, the amusement park and its candy apples. Hopefully they’ll be better this time.”
Rose loved candy apples and frequently got them at the amusement park. However, being the picky eater that she was, the last time she was thoroughly disappointed in her candy apple. She had complained that it was old, dry, and beginning to shrivel and had refused to finish eating it. She was going to give them another chance since this was the first time she’d had a bad one from here, but if she got another nasty candy apple… well, heads would roll.

While Rose silently drowned in pain, Sydney remained oblivious to the aches that she was subjecting her friend to. “Perhaps you thought the candy apples were lackluster, but I thought they were perfectly fine!” she argued playfully, a hand naturally slipping into Rose’s with ease.
Unlike Rose, Sydney was far from being a picky eater. So long as they weren’t green or black (because green meant vegetables and black was . . . a disgusting color for food) she was willing to eat it, particularly sweets! She had not a clue as to why the redhead would reject a sugary treat like candy apples (Fruit! Dipped in caramel!), but at least she had been there to eat what Rose had wanted to throw away. Why waste a perfectly tasty piece of candy?
UP until that point, the lanky teenager had been far too overjoyed at Rose’s presence to notice that she was walking oddly. As they trekked towards the front gate her brown eyes worriedly examined Rose head to toe. “Rosie, you don’t look too hot. Did you get hurt, or something?” she asked with furrowed eyebrows, gaze glimmering with worry. “Heck, if you tell me who did this to you I won’t hesitate to march right up to them and smack ‘em in the face!”

Rose had to bite back the faintly hysterical giggle that threatened to escape her at her friend’s comment. Oh, if only she knew.
“ You’d be smacking me in the face then. I hurt my ankle; twisted it in a close encounter with the pavement. Apparently double-dutch jump rope is not my forte’.”
A complete bunch of nonsense, of course, but Rose figured that it was plausible and just might throw her friend off track. She didn’t want to lie, but what else could she do? It wasn’t like she could tell Sydney the truth, especially not in such a crowded, public place. You never knew who was listening, after all.
“ That’s actually why I missed you the other day. I fell asleep soaking my ankle, for all the good it did.”
Rose nodded to a guard as they passed through the entrance, her eyes scanning the park. She didn’t particularly feel like getting whipped around by a roller coaster, but there was the old standby…
“ Bumper cars?”

Sydney’s jaw silently dropped, forming a childish ‘o’. Regaining her poise, she smiled and lightly tapped Rosie on the cheek. “Okay, there’s my smack for you then,” she cheekily replied. However, in the back of her mind she wondered if Rosie was ever the type to try double-dutch. Even so, who were her rope-turners? Double-dutch was not done alone, as far as the tomboy knew.
Idly swinging their interlocked hands back and forth, the redhead could only roll her eyes. “Fell asleep while soaking your ankle, hm? That’s a pretty lame way to miss out on the fabulous me,” she stated with a mockingly serious face. “But of course! You can make up all that missed time today!” Her expression turned gleeful, eyes brimming with eagerness. Roller coasters! Food! Games! All the fun activities were endless and she was fully prepared to hit as many as she could during their trip.
“Ho ho ho! Just don’t get sour when I beat your sorry little butt the entire time, okay?” Sydney warned with a confident grin, happily pulling on her friend towards the line. As it was not quite summer, the queue was relatively mild, which fueled her excitement even more.
She slid into the arena and hopped into a car, groaning when she discovered it to be a tight fit. “Me and my giant height!” she whined.

Rose grinned at her friend’s antics. After recent events she found the familiar company a much welcome reprieve. She slipped into an empty red car – red was an awesome color – as she said, “ Well, that’s what you get for eating Miracle Gro.”
Rose had always been slightly jealous of her friend’s impressive height, resulting in some teasing on the subject. On the other hand, Rose also teased her friend about her clumsiness, a trait she envied not at all.
Keeping her eye on the ride attendant, she put the petal to the metal as soon as she saw him flick the switch. Unfortunately for her, two boys collided head-on in front of her, blocking her speedy getaway. Annoyed, she pressed her hand to where the steering wheel's horn would be, if only it had one.
“ C’mon, move!”
Signs pointed to the possibility of Rose having road rage when she started driving for real.

Pouting, Sydney ran a finger down her cheek to represent a stream of invisible tears. “And I only wanted to be taller than the other boys!” she said in a high, dramatic voice.
She had always been on the taller spectrum when compared to the other girls, which pleased her. Back in her elementary days, Sydney had even been taller than most of the other boys, something that she liked to rub in at every chance she could. Heck, she had grown to the point where she was now an inch taller than her older brother. She tried not to tease her sibling about it, but the cheeky grin that appeared on her face each time they were side by side said otherwise. Of course, her height had its disadvantages as well, but she could live with those.
Watching her friend collide into a pair of bumper cars driven by a pair of boys, she rolled her eyes and rammed her car into one of them. “Needed some assistance?” Sydney jokingly inquired before smashing her own car into Rosie’s.

Rose’s nose scrunched up in frustration when her friend rammed into her. Traitor.
“ Not that kind of help!”
However, Sydney’s actions did open a hole for Rose, one she eagerly wiggled her car through. The ride was fun, as usual: Rose bumping Syndey gleefully, then acting disgruntled when she was bumped in return. Rose was not a particularly good sport when it came to games; not a bad sport, just not very good.
When the ride ended Rose waited for Sydney by the exit, blurting out something that had come to her mind during the ride.
“ Did I tell you I’m getting a new roommate?”
Rose had been hoping for a new roommate for some time, since she didn’t get along particularly well with her current one. Her current roommate came from money, and like many of the wealthy, proper Crystal girls she didn’t approve of Rose. Granted, she was fairly polite, but interactions between them had always been tense and strained.

Sydney cackled, her voice high and amused like a witch’s.”But help is help, is it not?” she reasoned, beaming widely as her eyes narrowed with delight.
They spent the rest of their precious minutes bumping and ramming into each other, even occasionally creating a competition to see who could crash into as many people as possible. Her smile stretched so hard that her muscles began to ache. Sydney had truly missed Rose and it was great to hang out with her again, though she couldn’t quite shake off the idea that something was off with her friend.
Waltzing out of the ride with a goofy, please grin on her face and hands behind her head, the smile was wiped off at the redhead’s sudden piece of news. “You have fun.” She replied after a small respite, attempting to lighten the mood. “Just know if you’re having trouble with your room mate just go and call me up, okay? I don’t mind getting my hands dirty,” Sydney joked, but the gleam in her eyes said otherwise.
“Anyways,” she chirped, grabbing a hold of Rose’s hand and unknowingly yanking it roughly. “Why don’t we play some games, eh? Like testing our strength!”

“ This one should be okay. I’ve met her before.”
Well, that was sorta true. Rose knew her new roommate was a fellow Senshi, so she assumed she must be cool. If nothing else there’d be an understanding about mysterious bruises and late nights, so no half-baked explanations would be needed.
“ Strength games? Bring it! Then let’s do some shooting.”
Rose always lost at the strength games, unless Sydney was feeling sorry for her… so she always lost. Not that that deterred her. It was a game, and Rose loved games. On the other hand, she tended to do slightly better at shooting and target games, so it was understandable that she liked them slightly more.
Rose wasn’t prepared for Sydney to try and bodily drag her to the game. Stupid really, seeing as how Sydney was always a rather enthusiastic person. Wobbling to regain her balance, she tugged back on her arm gently.
“ Hey, hey, easy on the cripple!” Then, to ward off any potential apologies, guild, or unwanted questions, she added,“ I know you don’t like it when I beat you in a race, but racing a handicapped person is hardly going to make you look better, now will it?”
That was more or less how the rest of the day went. Banter was exchanged, games were played, pointless challenges were issued, and Sydney’s occasionally overenthusiastic antics were met by Rose’s griping.
