Asu has discovered a bad loaf of bread, so Hayden had snatched it and left the house before she had time to realize that the bread was gone. He trudged along the path through the park over to the duckpond, figuring that the only creatures in the world that would eat bad bread would be ducks.
As he approached the pond the flock scattered, quacking and flapping as they moved to the center of the pond. "C'mon, I have bread!" Hayden tore open the plastic bag which held the bread and then pulled a piece out. He ripped it up into small bits and then tossed a few pieces in.
The ducks didn't budge. Hayden stared at them blankly... Weren't ducks supposed to love bread? He folded his arms over his chest, extremely disappointed that these ducks were the lamest ducks in existence. "Maybe it's only fresh bread..." Hayden grumbled in disappointment and sat down Indian style, leaning his arms on his knees. Well, since he was out of the house he might as well think of something to do...

Shiny had brought him to the park and told him not to get terribly dirty then settled onto a bench where she'd have a good view of the surrounding area. With that one rule hovering in his mind Ask wandered around looking for interesting things.
When he saw the pond he felt a strange sense of deja vu and wandered over to peer at the ducks in the center of the pond. He also saw a child on the other side of the pond with bread and looking annoyed that the ducks were in the center.
Well as long as he stayed over here he shouldn't have to meet the other child. Shiftily he pulled a rubber ducky from his jacket pocket and put it on the water to watch it float. Shiny didn't know about this ducky, he'd found it where it'd been forgotten in the back of the bathroom closet while looking for his other bath toys.
The rubber ducky of course wasn't one to obey the whims of it's owner being bound by the pond's current instead and immediately started to float towards the other child. Real lame ducks might not like bad bread but apparently rubber ducks did. Ask's eyes widened and he had an internal debate: chase the toy or stay away from the other child.
Ask took off after his duck around the edge of the pond, it was his duck after all.

Hayden glanced up to see Ask, but didn't really pay him any mind. He was busy trying to think of a grand scheme to put into play, so of course he didn't have the time to talk to some new kid.
That was until he saw the rubber duck floating toward him, and then saw Ask running after it. Did he lose it? Hayden got up and moved close enough to the water to pluck the duck out of it, thinking he was rescuing it rather than making a thief out of himself. "I got'cher duck." He announced with a rather proud expression on his face.

Oh no! The other one had picked up his duck now he'd have to ask for it back! All of his plans for quietly snagging the wayward duck and not having to say anything withered. Upon catching up with the duck Ask scuffed his foot against the ground shyly and peered up at the stranger. "Um... Can I have it back?" Ask's eyes widened preciously and hoped he looked cute enough for the duck's safe return.

Hayden raised one brow curiously. This kid sure was shy.... He hadn't met any shy kids yet. Even River had warmed up pretty fast. "Y'shuddn't put it 'n the pond y'know." He held it out for Ask to take, since he honestly had no interest in the rubber duck at all. Real ducks were cooler.
If they ate bread, anyway, these ones were lame so the rubber duck was probably cooler than them. "What'ser name?" He tilted his head a little, shifting from one foot to the other.

"Cleopatra." Ask said in response, promptly and decisively. Shiny had told him about the Egyptians when he poked one of her gold bracelets. "Why shouldn't I put her in the pond? She's a duck, she's 'sposed to float." This older kid seemed ok. He gave the duck back after all, and he'd wanted to know his duck's name. Maybe it'd be ok to stick around and talk a little more.

Hayden blinked a bit. Darn that speech pattern, he'd meant to ask for Ask's name, not the ducks... But hey, the duck had a pretty cool name. "'Cause the water'll take it away, thasswhy." He nodded as if he knew this for a fact. "An' if it gets too far out you'll never get 'er again." Of course, he did know this for a fact because once upon a time, he'd put a boat in the pond and it had floated away, never to be seen again.
"'M Hayden, what'ser--" he paused correcting himself, "what's your name?" He reached down to grab his bad loaf of bread and redid the tie Asu had put on it, since the ducks really weren't all that interested.
Except they were, now that Hayden wasn't staring daggers at them. They'd paddled their way over to the soggy crumbs and were munching at them quite happily.

Ask pouted at the thought of his duck floating away into a watery future. The idea of never seeing his Cleopatra ever again was a little scary, that happened? Why would his duck leave him? "I'm Ask, nice to meet you Hayden." Politeness, Shiny's number two rule. "But Cleopatra wants to float on the water. Can we tie string or something to her then pu-" Ask cut himself off as he saw the real ducks floating over and eating the bread. He let out a delighted giggle when one duck dove butt up to get some sinking crumbs. He instantly forgot what he was going to say about his rubber duck in favor of watching the real ducks that had gathered to feast and quack over the bread. "They quack!" Ask was delighted by the real ducks.

"Ask?" Hayden raised one eyebrow curiously. Who named their kid Ask? That was a bizarre name... He was distracted from the thoughts as Ask giggled happily. He turned his head to see the ducks and narrowed his eyes. "Oh suuure, eat it now when I'm not looking." Hayden stuck his tongue out at then and undid the bread again.
"Wanna throw more in an' see if they eat it?" He offered the loaf to Ask. "An' a'course they quack, therr ducks!"

"Yup, my name's my name." And as if that explained everything he reached out to take some of the bread, broke it into smaller pieces and pelted the pieces at them. Watching wide eyed as the ducks ate the bread he plopped down on the ground and held Cleopatra while grinning at the real ducks. "I've never seen ducks before! I like them!"

"You never saw'd ducks before?" Hayden seemed astonished. This kid was surely deprived, and he wasn't even sure what "deprived" meant. "Ducks're cool when they eat the bread but these guys wern't eatin' it." He shrugged and tore up his own piece of bread and tossed in the crumbs. "Maybe Cleopatra made 'em wanna eat it?"

"Yup, Mom just got me the other day and this is my first time at the park. And real ducks are so much better then pictures." Ask said brightly. "And of course the ducks followed Cleopatra." he hugged the rubber duck. "Cause she's a brave duck and came over to visit you!" Ask was rather pleased that his duck had floated over, Hayden seemed very nice, even sharing his bread.

"Ohhhh, that s'plains it." Hayden nodded, he remembered that he hadn't seen ducks either before Asu had gotten him. He laughed a little, Ask sounded a little funny talking about his duck as if it were alive. "Maybe, maybe. I bet the real ducks're just scaredy cats." He nodded, tossing a few more crumbs into the water.

Ask looked a little confused, "Cats? How can ducks be cats?"
He'd seen a cat before and they looked nothing like ducks. First they didn't like water. Second they had fur and not feathers. Third their faces and heads were different. And finally cats ate birds right?

"It's an espression, y'know?" Hayden blinked. "Like uh... I'm so hungry I could eatta horse." He nodded, pleased that he'd come up with an example. "I wuddn't really eatta horse though..." He frowned, horses probably didn't taste very good anyway...
