Hello there! Welcome to the Fairy Tail Frequently Asked Questions Thread! Having trouble with something? Well, first off, read the threads explaining the NBS or "New Battle System" as a whole and how to train yourself (since that's what it seems most people have questions about). If you ever need to find these threads again, they are in the subforum titled "The New Battle System!"

Still have questions about status/duels? Or are your questions completely unrelated to either? Then read on!

GENERAL FAQ

Q: Subforums? What are you talking about?

A: Subforums are the list of topics below where your avatar is on the screen. The reason Guilds have subforums is to keep threads with different topics organized. For example, we have a subforum called "Manga Talk: Fairy Tail" where you can find threads all about Fairy Tail. You won't find a thread about what each member ate for breakfast in that subforum! Also, sometimes people say "forum" instead of "subforum."

In most Guilds, it's considered a no-no to post a thread in the incorrect subforum. The most common occurrence is that people will post their thread in the main forum (the place you're automatically taken to when you click "View Forum" ). For the most part, we try to keep the main forum clutter-free, so people can easily find Announcements and Stickies, which contain invaluable info like this FAQ! So please, post in the correct subforum! If you're unsure where your thread should go, put it in Fun & Games at the very least.

Q: Dice rolls? But I don't have any dice at my house! How am I supposed to use the New Battle System?!

A: On Gaia, when you make a new topic or reply, there is an option immediately below the white box where you type. The option is called "Post Action." If you click on the word "None," two more options will appear. Click "Roll Dice" and a new light blue box will appear below the Post Action. In that box, you can choose what kind of dice you want to roll (like 4-sided or 100-sided) and how many of that type of dice you want to roll (the most you can roll at once is 20 dice). Once you hit the "Submit" button for your thread/reply, you'll see what the results of the dice roll were above your post, like in my Scoresheet here. Notice that the blue bar tells you the results for each individual die (singular of "dice" ) as well as the total.

When you go to edit a post, you don't have the option of including a dice roll, you can only make a NEW post with a dice roll.

Q: What does it mean to "change my post style to Document?"

A: In the same area as the Post Action menu, there is a Post Style drop-down menu as well. Click where it says "Say," and a list of option drops down. If you click one, you can see the little picture box to the immediate right change. This is a preview how the background of your post will look. "Say" is the default option, and looks like a speech bubble. "Document" has a brown background and looks like a piece of parchment.

Two things to keep in mind about Post Styles:
1) In Guilds, when you hit "Preview," it will not show the changes in Post Style you made.

2) Once you submit a post with a Post Style, you cannot go back and change the Post Style. Meaning if you meant to have a Document style post, but forgot to change it, you wouldn't be able to edit it.

Q: It says I can't see the S-Level Jobs or Second Floor subforums! gonk Why can't I?

A: Those two subforums (along with the Conference Room) are designated as Crew-only. This means that only those promoted to Crew can enter the subforum, and see/post it the threads inside.

Q: A Sticky? Sounds icky! User Image

A: LOL. But seriously, a Sticky is just a name for a thread that stays above normal threads, but below Announcement threads. If someone tells you, "Read the Announcements and Stickies," they mean to read any of the specially marked threads found at the very top of a forum. It is a very good idea to read them, because they contain important information on how a Guild/forum works, and keeps you informed about any events going on. Rules are usually in Announcements/Stickies, so make doubly sure to read those!

Q: Why do you guys keep talking about "skeletons?" It's kinda creepy.

A: A "skeleton" or "skelly" are different nicknames for an unfilled sign-up form, like the ones you would fill out for joining an after-school sports team or registering to vote. It contains a list of information formatted in the way the person in charge wants everyone to submit their information. The most common way for people to provide a skelly is to provide the coding for it. If you see a box with text that looks like this:

Username:
Favorite Food:
Favorite Movie:

You should highlight all the text in that box, copy it, then paste it into a reply, and fill it out according to the rules of the thread. An important thing to remember to do is watch out for the format coding in skeletons, like "[b ]" and "[ /b]" (without spaces). If you're not careful, your post could look like a mess, and your submission may not be accepted!

When using the sample skeleton above, your post would look like this when done properly:
Quote:
Username: Sami Von Disco
Favorite Food: All of it.
Favorite Movie: All of them.

If you're not careful when filling it out or copying it, your post can look like this:
Quote:
Username: Sami Von Disco
Favorite Food: All of it.
Favorite Movie: All of them.

Looks pretty crappy, huh?

NEW BATTLE SYSTEM FAQ

Q: What does "NBS" mean?

A: It stands for "New Battle System." This Guild has always had a Battle System where we could fight each other using the Dice Roll post action, but it wasn't until approximately August 2010 that a user named Amaiiko joined our Guild, and proposed radical changes to the Battle System. While they were certainly more complicated than the old system, it was better balanced, more versatile, and more engaging. Amaiiko simply called it "The New Battle System" or the "NBS."

There's your history lesson for the day! lol

Q: So what do we do in the NBS?

A: With the NBS, you create a character using this skeleton (scroll down until you see green text) in a similar fashion to how you would create a roleplay character, although stuff like Biography and Personality aren't as important as the stats. Once your profile is all set up, you can begin fighting! That's right, you can challenge other members to a duel, or fight any of the training tools provided to level up. The NBS is like playing Pokemon, only you are the pokemon!

Q: Okay... I have no idea how to fill out the skeleton! gonk

A: Alright, don't panic! There is a learning curve to the NBS, but if you take a little time to figure things out one by one, you'll get the hang of it easy enough. 3nodding Now, I'll help you focus on the core aspects of character creation: the stats.
Quote:
Role-play Name: Whatever you want your character's name to be. If you're not into roleplaying, this can just be whatever name you want to be known as around the Guild.

Level: You ALWAYS start out at level 1. You gain a level for every 1000 experience points you earn.

Pool: Pool is your current level plus nine, so when you start out, your pool will be 10. (level 1 + 9 =10) Your pool is the number your Attack stat and Defense stat should equal when added together. Half of your pool is what one set of your spells should equal when added together. So for 10 Pool, your total Attack spell value would be 5, and then your Defense spells would also equal 5.

Rank: Levels 1 through 10 are "F rank," so you would put F here.

Attack: Attack and Defense are a package deal. You can have these stats equal anything you want (I lie, each stat has to have a minimum of 2), as long as Attack + Defense = Pool. So with a pool of 10, you could have Attack be 5 and Defense be 5.
Defense:

Health: Health is your Pool + Defense stat. So if your Defense was 5, you would 10 (your Pool) to it to get 15 Health.

Experience: Your total experience earned from training, fights, achievements, and contests. You start out with 0.

Jewels: Jewels are the currency to be used in the NBS for buying "Consumables." Consumables are things like potions, scrolls, etc. but haven't been implemented in the system yet. So for now, keep track of how many you have, but they don't do anything yet. You start out with 2000J.

Streak: Your number of matches won in a row against another member. You start out with a streak of 0, and if you lose against someone your Streak resets to 0. Training fights and competition fights do not count against you, and do not add to your streak.

Q: What do I put for spells?

A: Well, the power of the spells (the part that says Attack +3, for example) is flexible, but determined by your Pool. See the question above if you're already confused.

Now, spell names and descriptions are just things to make the NBS more customizable, and to roleplay a little. It's assumed that you'll be a certain type of mage, like one who uses Ice or Fire. Check out the Book of Mages part of The Lore if you're having trouble coming up with your "type of magic." The only effect of Spell Descriptions that has an effect on the game is the number, but everything else you can make up as you please.

Q: My Pool is an odd number and doesn't divide evenly, how does this effect my Spells?

A: Since 10 divided by 2 is 5, that means all your Attack spells can add up to 5. But if you level up and your Pool becomes 11, dividing by 2 gets you 5.5. Fractions/decimals don't work in this system, so you always round down. A Pool of 11 means your Attack spells would still have to equal 5.

Q: Are my Spells permanent?
A: No, actually. One day you can have two Spells being Attack +2 and Attack +3, and then change them to Attack +1 and Attack +4 the next. You cannot change the power of your spells mid-fight though. Any time outside of battles though, you can change around your Spells as you please, as long as you keep in mind that the total power of the spells must equal half of your Pool.

Q: How many Spells can I have? How do I get new Spells?

A: You can have a maximum of ten spells; five Attack, and five Defense. You are allowed to create one new spell each time you level up, but you are not required to make a new one; you can choose to increase the power of an existing spell.

Q: How do Talents work?

A: A Talent is a passive bonus to your character when engaged in a fight. "Passive" meaning that it automatically kicks in, and you don't have to do anything to make it work. Once you have a Talent, you can name it anything you want to better fit your character.

Q: How do I make a Talent?

A: You use things called "Runewords," and there are three types of Runewords: reagent, reactor, and catalyst. To make a talent, you need one reagent and one reactor. A catalyst is optional but they do provide another bonus. A list of Reagents and Reactors can be found in The Library part of The Lore, along with their effects. The effect of a Talent is determined by the Runewords used to make it. You cannot make up your own Runewords.

Q: Can I have more than one Talent?

A: You can, but you can only use one Talent in a battle if you are below D Rank. For more information about Runewords and Talents, check here.

Q: Do I have to have/use a Talent?

A:

Q: Yay! I understand how to fill out the profile! blaugh Now what do I do with it?

A: You post your profile here, in the Profile Gallery. It can also help you keep track of your stats if you post it in your Scoresheet as well. In the Profile Gallery, be sure to update your profile every so often by going back and editing the first post you made.

Q: What's a Scoresheet?

A: A Scoresheet is a thread you will make in the NBS subforum that has your up-to-date stat info in the first post. Your Scoresheet is also where you'll do PvE training and keep track of all the experience you earn that way.

Q: What's a Fight Sheet?

A: A Fight Sheet is a thread you will make in the NBS subforum that has a link to your profile post in the Profile Gallery and a link to your Scoresheet. In the Fight Sheet, people can challenge you to fights, and you can either accept or deny the challenge. If you want to fight someone, go to their Fight Sheet and post a challenge.

Q: How do I level up?

A: To level up, you have to earn 1000 experience points, or EXP. You can earn EXP through training, beating someone in a match, earning Achievements/Medals, doing Jobs, or participating in Tournaments.

Q: What happens when I level up?

A: When you level up, you should immediately update your profile. When you do level up, your Pool will increase by 1, and any stats related to the Pool will be changed as well.

Q: What's the deal with Rank, and how do I go up a rank?

A: Rank is just a way to clump people of similar power levels together, and make it easier for balancing things like Runewords, EXP rewards for defeating members, or providing Rank-specific services like Meditation, which is reserved for F Rank and F Rank only. Here is the list of the Ranks, and what levels make up those ranks.

Quote:
Master Rank: Level 91 - 100
Rank S: Level 61 - 90
Rank A: Level 51 - 60
Rank B: Level 41 - 50
Rank C: Level 31 - 40
Rank D: Level 21 - 30
Rank E: Level 11 - 20
Rank F: Level 1 - 10
The way you go up a Rank is by leveling up 10 times, as this list shows.

Q: What happens when I rank up?

A:

Q: What are Medals/Achievements, and are they important?

A:

Q: Why does the NBS use so much math?

A: Because math is power.

DUELING/BATTLES

Q: Who/What can I fight against?

A: You can fight against monsters as part of a job or against another Fairy Tail member (called a duel). For more information on different type of duels that may happen in our guild, click here!

Q: SWEET! How do I start a duel with another member?

A: There are a couple ways to start a duel with another member. To start a duel with a specific member, go to the Battle System sub-forum, then to the member's scoresheet. Post something like "I challenge you!" (something to indicate that you are challenging him/her) and post your status too (just copy paste from the Profile Gallery).
Also, remember, lower level gets to choose whether he/she wants to start first. If both users are of the same level, the challenger rolls a 1 6-sided die. If you accept the challenge, copy and paste your status onto a new post and roll 1 6-sided die.
If both dice roll is the same. The one accepting the challenge starts first.

Q: So how does the combat system actually work?

A: Simple. Rolling the dice is equivalent to your chance of successful attack or defend. Your Attack is your attack power, your Defense your defending power. Damage and calculation wise is based on whether if you are in Attack position or Defense position and the number given from your dice roll. Basically, fights happens in rounds. Each round, you can either be in Attack position or Defense position (Attack position being you roll the dice first and Defense position being you roll the dice after your opponent has made his/her move).
For full details, go here.

Q: What happens after a duel/mission is over?

A: In PvP matches, you gain a number of experience points based on your Rank as well as your opponent. In Gamble matches, you may also gain jewels, consumables, scrolls, etc., whatever that is in the "pool".
For more information, click here and here.

Q: Can we have teams?

A: Yes, of course! To invite someone to a team, go to their Scoresheet in the Battle System sub-forum and type something like "Hey, would you like to join my team?" (something to indicate an invitation to a team). Get your members, and PM it to Amaiiko. Amaiiko will then post up your teams in the Team Scoreboard in the Battle System sub-forum. Of course, you get to name your team. Give it an interesting name, like Raijinshu** (Raijin Tribe), etc.
**Raijinshu is actually the team name for Laxus' bodyguards. Consist of Freed (or Fried), Evergreen and Bixlow.

OTHER FAQ

Q: Can I make a job?

A: Yes, anyone can post a job. Jobs can range anywhere from "Defeat the Dragon" to "Draw My Avi". It's completely up to you. The only rule is that you offer a sufficient reward according to the difficulty to the task.

Q: Can I offer EXP as a reward for a job?

A: Yes, you can offer EXP equal to or below your exp as a reward. Remember though, the reward and difficulty of the job should be equal!

Q: How is RP different from a job?

A: Not much actually. Your RP may or may not be related to NBS. If you want to make an RP and give certain rewards that benefits your and other players' NBS character profiles, make sure your RP has an actual storyline and consist of 250 posts or more before completion. Your posts must not be spams or OCC talks.
Same, your RP session must offer the amount of experience and jewels equivalent to the difficulty.
