NEW BATTLE SYSTEM FAQ
Q: What does "NBS" mean?A: It stands for "New Battle System." This Guild has always had a Battle System where we could fight each other using the Dice Roll post action, but it wasn't until approximately August 2010 that a user named Amaiiko joined our Guild, and proposed radical changes to the Battle System. While they were certainly more complicated than the old system, it was better balanced, more versatile, and more engaging. Amaiiko simply called it "The New Battle System" or the "NBS."
There's your history lesson for the day!
lol Q: So what do we do in the NBS?A: With the NBS, you create a character using
this skeleton (scroll down until you see green text) in a similar fashion to how you would create a roleplay character, although stuff like Biography and Personality aren't as important as the stats. Once your profile is all set up, you can begin fighting! That's right, you can challenge other members to a duel, or fight any of the training tools provided to level up. The NBS is like playing Pokemon, only
you are the pokemon!
Q: Okay... I have no idea how to fill out the skeleton! gonk A: Alright, don't panic! There
is a learning curve to the NBS, but if you take a little time to figure things out one by one, you'll get the hang of it easy enough.
3nodding Now, I'll help you focus on the core aspects of character creation: the stats.
Quote:
Role-play Name: Whatever you want your character's name to be. If you're not into roleplaying, this can just be whatever name you want to be known as around the Guild.
Level: You ALWAYS start out at level 1. You gain a level for every 1000 experience points you earn.
Pool: Pool is your current level plus nine, so when you start out, your pool will be 10. (level 1 + 9 =10) Your pool is the number your Attack stat and Defense stat should equal when added together. Half of your pool is what one set of your spells should equal when added together. So for 10 Pool, your total Attack spell value would be 5, and then your Defense spells would also equal 5.
Rank: Levels 1 through 10 are "F rank," so you would put F here.
Attack: Attack and Defense are a package deal. You can have these stats equal anything you want (I lie, each stat has to have a minimum of 2), as long as Attack + Defense = Pool. So with a pool of 10, you could have Attack be 5 and Defense be 5.
Defense:Health: Health is your Pool + Defense stat. So if your Defense was 5, you would 10 (your Pool) to it to get 15 Health.
Experience: Your total experience earned from training, fights, achievements, and contests. You start out with 0.
Jewels: Jewels are the currency to be used in the NBS for buying "Consumables." Consumables are things like potions, scrolls, etc. but haven't been implemented in the system yet. So for now, keep track of how many you have, but they don't do anything yet. You start out with 2000J.
Streak: Your number of matches won
in a row against another member. You start out with a streak of 0, and if you lose against someone your Streak resets to 0. Training fights and competition fights do not count against you, and do not add to your streak.
Q: What do I put for spells?A: Well, the power of the spells (the part that says Attack +3, for example) is flexible, but determined by your Pool. See the question above if you're already confused.
Now, spell names and descriptions are just things to make the NBS more customizable, and to roleplay a little. It's assumed that you'll be a certain type of mage, like one who uses Ice or Fire. Check out the
Book of Mages part of The Lore if you're having trouble coming up with your "type of magic." The only effect of Spell Descriptions that has an effect on the game is the number, but everything else you can make up as you please.
Q: My Pool is an odd number and doesn't divide evenly, how does this effect my Spells?A: Since 10 divided by 2 is 5, that means all your Attack spells can add up to 5. But if you level up and your Pool becomes 11, dividing by 2 gets you 5.5.
Fractions/decimals don't work in this system, so you always round down. A Pool of 11 means your Attack spells would still have to equal 5.
Q: Are my Spells permanent?A: No, actually. One day you can have two Spells being Attack +2 and Attack +3, and then change them to Attack +1 and Attack +4 the next. You
cannot change the power of your spells mid-fight though. Any time outside of battles though, you can change around your Spells as you please, as long as you keep in mind that the total power of the spells must equal half of your Pool.
Q: How many Spells can I have? How do I get new Spells?A: You can have a maximum of ten spells; five Attack, and five Defense. You are allowed to create one new spell each time you level up, but you are not required to make a new one; you can choose to increase the power of an existing spell.
Q: How do Talents work?A: A Talent is a passive bonus to your character when engaged in a fight. "Passive" meaning that it automatically kicks in, and you don't have to do anything to make it work. Once you have a Talent, you can name it anything you want to better fit your character.
Q: How do I make a Talent?A: You use things called "Runewords," and there are three types of Runewords: reagent, reactor, and catalyst. To make a talent, you need one reagent and one reactor. A catalyst is optional but they do provide another bonus. A list of Reagents and Reactors can be found in
The Library part of The Lore, along with their effects. The effect of a Talent is determined by the Runewords used to make it. You cannot make up your own Runewords.
Q: Can I have more than one Talent?A: You can, but you can only use one Talent in a battle if you are below D Rank. For more information about Runewords and Talents,
check here.
Q: Do I have to have/use a Talent?A:Q: Yay! I understand how to fill out the profile! blaugh Now what do I do with it?A: You post your profile
here, in the Profile Gallery. It can also help you keep track of your stats if you post it in your Scoresheet as well. In the Profile Gallery, be sure to update your profile every so often by going back and editing the first post you made.
Q: What's a Scoresheet?A: A Scoresheet is a thread you will make in the
NBS subforum that has your up-to-date stat info in the first post. Your Scoresheet is also where you'll do PvE training and keep track of all the experience you earn that way.
Q: What's a Fight Sheet?A: A Fight Sheet is a thread you will make in the
NBS subforum that has a link to your profile post in the Profile Gallery and a link to your Scoresheet. In the Fight Sheet, people can challenge you to fights, and you can either accept or deny the challenge. If you want to fight someone, go to their Fight Sheet and post a challenge.
Q: How do I level up?A: To level up, you have to earn 1000 experience points, or EXP. You can earn EXP through training, beating someone in a match, earning Achievements/Medals, doing Jobs, or participating in Tournaments.
Q: What happens when I level up?A: When you level up, you should immediately update your profile. When you do level up, your Pool will increase by 1, and any stats related to the Pool will be changed as well.
Q: What's the deal with Rank, and how do I go up a rank?A: Rank is just a way to clump people of similar power levels together, and make it easier for balancing things like Runewords, EXP rewards for defeating members, or providing Rank-specific services like
Meditation, which is reserved for F Rank and F Rank only. Here is the list of the Ranks, and what levels make up those ranks.
Quote:
Master Rank: Level 91 - 100
Rank S: Level 61 - 90
Rank A: Level 51 - 60
Rank B: Level 41 - 50
Rank C: Level 31 - 40
Rank D: Level 21 - 30
Rank E: Level 11 - 20
Rank F: Level 1 - 10
The way you go up a Rank is by leveling up 10 times, as this list shows.
Q: What happens when I rank up?A:Q: What are Medals/Achievements, and are they important?A:Q: Why does the NBS use so much math?A: Because math is power.
