It seemed to mercy that the range of chores assigned to candidates spanned the entire spectrum of possibilities - she wasn't sure if they were trying to expose them to as much alternate lifestyles as possible in case they didn't impress - and lets face it a fair number did not - or if they just randomly handed out needed work to anyone available. She was inclined to think it was the latter choice.

Which made the prospect of spending time on the cliff top helping the vet's do...well something, health checks of some sort even less appealing then if she had thought it was for her greater future good. She sighed and trudged along the path. Honestly she had no clue where exactly she was going - the directions had been somewhat vague but she assumed if she kept going down the path eventually she would run across the people she was supposed to be helping out.

Unfortunately for Mercy - while she was quite good at paying attention to people around her she wasn't so observant when it came to animals, especially the larger herd beasts and when she rounded a boulder jutting up from the ground and causing the path to curve around it she was not expecting to run across a rather large specimen of the bovine variety. At least she thought it was bovine in the fleeting second before the startled beast flung up its head at her startled yelp and shied into the small cluster of beasts beside it - which got them riled up and before she knew it Mercy found herself surrounded by stomping snorting and thoroughly spooked beasts.

Great. She had absolutely no idea what to do and taking a few steps backwards she cowered against the rock.

The first lamb of the Turn has just been born, and thank Faranth Tiepet has been there to see it. Just as important to the herders as it was to the dragonriders, the first creature out almost always gave sign over what was to come next. This specific lamb was also very important because it was to be placed amongst the rest of the breeding stock, ready to produce bigger and stronger offspring with each generation.

It was a healthy ram, his cries strong and his urge to suckle stronger, leaving all the humans around to make noise of their own at the success. Tie was cheering as well, though her cheers slowed as the herdbeasts still out in the pasture began to stir and low. Something was obviously bothering them.

"Let's go check it, shall we?"

Her words were meant for the two flitters in her company, a green called Skybox who soared above her head, and a small black called Caine that sat nestled in her mass of hair. The green chirped and moved out ahead, her flight quick, while the other two slowly jogged to catch up. Skybox was quick in relaying images to Caine, who popped them in turn to his person. Someone had come into one of the other laying pens apparently and the animals were upset. The timid Shepherd rounded a corner with a whistle just in time to watch Skybox stop over a girl, shrieking mildly.

"Hey! You're not supposed to be in here!"

Mercy's attention was somewhat divided on one and she was eying the milling herdbeasts - which were far to close for her comfort...and on the other the angry green firelizard darting about over her head, it wasn't made any better when someone came around the corner and yelled at her. Cripes she could just die! She thought to herself. This was not the type of impression she wanted to give a total stranger and clearly she'd broken some sort of rule - great.

Well, it wasn't like she'd done it on purpose! "Obviously" She remarked in a low voice as she edged away from an animal that was looking at her in a way she didn't much like the looks of. Of course being sarcastic to the person who'd run up probably wasn't going to help her much and so she called out in a louder voice. "I'm sorry - they sent me up here without much directions and I guess I made a wrong turn or something" She explained. "If you'd just er..call them off or something?" She asked with a quick pleading look at the stranger.

"Skybox won't hurt you."

Tie was a little too nervous about the animals to be nervous around this person. Usually quick to stammer and try to get away, the fact that this girl was amongst the animals during lambing season and in a pen where many of the ewes were ready to drop at any time. While nothing seemed to be so dangerous, it still certainly wasn't a place for someone not versed in caring for herdbeasts. Certainly not a place for a green Candidate as this one seemed.

In an effort to calm the other girl lest she startle the ovines into an unneeded stampede, Tie gave a sharp whistle that called her flitter back to her side. Skybox gave a hiss and returned quickly to Tie's side, settling on her shoulder and snapping at Caine's tail so he'd move it.

"How...how did you get in here? P-P-please come with me, we'll go somewhere else."

Tiem for questions...and time for stuttering.

Mercy was rather glad he'd called off the angry firelizard - she'd heard more then a few stories about the beasts and their sharp claws - and that one had certainly seemed angry enough. Hazarding a few glances at the milling herdbeasts she edged along the rock towards the stranger. Gaining confidence the further she got away from the animals mercy stopped to brush some dust from her clothing.

"I just followed the pathway, they told me to come up here and help the vets with something or another, I don't know why, I was learning how to heal people not animals" She exclaimed "I don't know much about animals" she further admitted. Her mother had never felt it proper for a young lady to learn about such things and Mercy had never been to eager to argue that point. Who wants to muck after herdbeasts? She'd admire them from afar thanks! Well until now.

The girls stutter was not lost on Mercy, but it seemed somewhat rude to react to it.

"Healing animals is just as important as healing people. Without many parts of the animals, their dung or their blood, many medicines cannot be made. We cannot eat sick animals either, you know, and the sick cannot heal when starving."

Tiepet was very quiet as the girl got to her side, responding only in a soft whisper. It always mildly irked her to have people say things about animals, about healing animals being not as important as healing people. Healing animals was almost far more important, as a Weyr depended on the creatures it ate just as much as it depended on the Dragonriders who protected them. It was a fair circle, she only wished people would know it and respect it.

Now that this other was with her, Tie started towards the more open area, the safer area. She could easily take this other person back with her into the lambing pens, but the shepherd seriously doubted that someone dressed so nicely, someone so clean, would even be slightly interested in watching animals give birth. So what was there to do then? Skybox had flittered off to go watch the ovines, as she was supposed to, and Caine merely dug his little claws into her head and he watched with beady red eyes this stranger.

"You...you're are w-w-we-welcome to help us with cleaning stalls, or we can just w-w-atch the ovine. We can even s-s-sort them for fun, if you'd like."

Mercy stopped trying to get the dirt off her clothing as the other explained the necessity of caring for animals. she supposed the other might have taken some offense to her words and thought it might be best to set the record straight. "I think you might have misunderstood me" She told her with a smile "It's not that I don't think the animals are important, they are clearly essential to our way of life. I just don't know anything about animals is all...So I suppose what i should have said is I don't understand why they sent me here instead of someone that even knows what sorting Ovine's means" She said with an apologetic shrug.

Mercy hoped that her clarification would be enough to sooth the girls ire over her previous statement. She hadn't meant to sound so callous "But" She continued after a few moments of thought "I suppose since they did send me here they mean for me to learn something, so where do you suggest I start doing that?"

Tiepet really wasn't offended that badly by what Mercy had said, even if her tone suggested otherwise. It was silly how angry she could sound when she was just talking naturally about things she was sure over, which was probably one of the reasons why Tie didn't talk much at all. Not really a bad thing, it just made communications rather awkward.

"I think....you just....got unlucky? Chores are assigned at random so..."

Tie really didn't know what else to say. This girl looked horribly out of place next to her, next to this whole field, but it likely would have been very, very rude to say so. Instead she just bit her tongue and tried to figure out what she could do next - and thankfully this girl was willing to try anything.

"Cur...currently, we're watching a lambing. An...another...ovine is do so-so-soon, so we can wawawatch that?"

"Well thats typical' Mercy stated with a small smile "I'm always unlucky when it comes to things like that". Eying the creatures for a few moments though they seemed to have settled somewhat since she'd run across them initially. That was a relief, how embarrassing would it be to not even make it to the hatching because she got trampled to death by a bunch of shaggy animals? Somehow Mercy was pretty sure the other girl wouldn't find that very amusing so she kept her mouth shut on that account.

"Oh a birth...babies of all sorts are always cute that would be great!" She told her sincerely, sure the adults might be smelly and moody but the little toddling babes were always sweet to watch no matter the species. It suddenly occurred to Mercy that she didn't know the other girls name, well that had been rude Mercy chastised herself and hurried on to correct her mistake. "I'm Mercy" She introduced herself in a cheery tone 'Whats your name?"

"T....Tiepet. I...my family...."

There wasn't really much else to say except for the fact she could lead the other girl in to where the ovine where indeed lambing. She didn't really know what to do, the other girl would hopefully follow, and soon the pair where inside the shed where an obviously very pregnant ovine paced a bit in her stall. There were several adults around, one of them covered in blood up to his arms, and Tiepet squeezed as close to the front as possible.

"Re...ready? This one...it won't be long now."
