How do you feel about people not getting hired just because they don't speak Spanish?

I don't think that it should be my problem if people move here without learning English first. I should not be negatively effected because of it.

I'm not talking about people who were forced to move here and haven't been here long enough to really learn. I don't have a problem with people who are trying. It's the ones who have been here for years and years and still don't speak a word of English.

What's the occupation?

I think it's a good incentive to learn spanish. The job market is pretty demanding right now.

It doesn't matter. I still feel that it shouldn't be my problem if people chose to live here and refuse to learn English.

We need to stop enabling them. I'm sick of it! Maybe they need an intensive to learn English. I think that speaking the language should be a requirement for citizenship.

I totally agree! If you can do the job well, who cares if you dont speak Spanish or not! I only speak English and French and I'm doing fine. I dont see why the job market in California is so damn demanding of the unemployed to actually go out and learn something that isnt that needed much. I may learn it, but i'd only use if i go out on an archaeological dig in Central America or something.

as for those who come into our country, they need to learn english or go back.

Oh it is. I mean it goes both ways. People who only speak spanish should learn english and vice versa (depending on the area and the rest). The more you know the more you're worth usually.

See, the thing is that employers don't care what language the customer speaks, as long as they give them money. Hence why, to them, employees who speak Spanish is a good thing, and its probably not going to stop being an asset any time soon.

I just find it totally unfair that there are those who get a job well before me b/c of some language issue. I put forward a shitload of effort to get a job and i just get pushed to the side for those who can speak Spanish.

Whos to say that they didn't put forth just as much effort, and more? They obviously put the effort into learning another language as well as working toward whatever goal they have for a job, and you, apparently, didn't. I didn't either-- I just don't care as much, because I really admire people who speak multiple languages, and I think that they deserve recognition for their efforts.

Yeah, learning another language is really hard. I've actually tried but my brain just won't retain the information. Maybe it's because I resent having to learn the language. I would probably do a lot better if I was doing it because I wanted to and not because it is a job requirement.

That would only bother me if they were less qualified in every other way. Like if they had no job experience and you had a year of experience.

I know that having someone who is bilingual is helpful but I don't think that the average joe should get their application thrown out for not being bilingual. Unless you are planning on doing something that requires you to physically travel to another country or at least have some form of communication with someone in another country.

Ohhh, geeze, it's REALLY HARD, why didn't I think of that? So obviously because you gave up on doing it, for whatever reason (apparently pride? laziness? Because its REALLY HARD?) the people who persevered in their efforts to further their own education so that they could open up better jobs for themselves should be overlooked? That's a really pathetic argument.

I'm sorry if I sound rude, I know I do, but seriously WTF. I don't even speak any other languages either, but I'm not going to complain about it if people do. I'm also not going to complain when a job that wants me to have several years of construction experience doesn't hire me because I was too lazy to ever pick up a shovel and do some yard work. The point is that this country is supposed to be one of the best educated in the world and it makes me SICK that people here spend half their time crying about Spanish. People in Europe, even Canada, are BORN speaking more than one language.

If we honestly want to continue to consider ourselves as one of the best countries in the world, we need to be more responsible about our own education.
