The setting: a field of flowers, blood red, the place where Yuki departed from. There are skeletal black trees here and there, providing the only cover in the expanse. The large area is a circle fenced by a waist-high outcropping. The sky is gray, overcast, and there's a good chance it will rain.

X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X Fefnir made his approach to the place slowly, gently, almost floating. He could barely feel his own footfalls, heavy as they were, drudging him toward a place he swore he'd never return to. Of course, when he'd thought about it, there could be no other place for what he was doing. There was nowhere more fitting, save for maybe Squad 2, but it had long since been remodeled, and it would be a miracle to find any of the places he'd trained with her before now. Instead, he would settle for this area, this field stained red, for his battle. His empty red eyes scanned the area with lackadaisical pace, fully confident that he would find no adversary there, but trained to treat every situation as worst case. A short leap dropped him down into the bowl, and he glided to the center at a sort of half-jog, half-float.
Kneeling, he ran his hands through the loose soil in a particular spot. Still there... he thought, finding a small strip of metal that glowed white hot in his hand before placing it gingerly back in its place, That's where she left from. Yuki... I hope you can see this, whatever you're doing... Can you feel me like I can feel you? As if in response, there was a definite pang of pain in his chest, right in the middle, where one of several scars was. Fefnir had no idea if it was a sign or not, but if anything, it meant 'Hurry up and get this done!'
"This makes twice, on both fronts," He stated rather dejectedly, "but it will be good to see him again, and good to have someone succeed at the task. Let's hope this time my opponent can win,"X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X

It's feels strange, no matter how many times in your life it occurs. Even someone of my age still gets caught in the anticipation of meeting an old friend. However, it's strange that I would be summoned by him out of the blue like this. I am almost certain this meeting will prove to be more than just chatting away the afternoon with someone. Kuro shifted in and out of sight as he shunpoed toward the location he was to meet Fefnir. It seemed that the young man that he had knew so long ago had made quite a name for himself in the Sereitei. A small grin curled across his face as he neared his destination, the faint traces of Fefnir's reaitsu could already be sensed in the air. As he came to the edge of the field, Kuro stared at the hundreds of deep red flowers that had bloomed there. His crimson gaze slid from side to side, taking in every detail of his surroundings before he slowly began to step through the tall grass and many flowers. Near the center he could see a man standing alone.
...And there he is. Kuro's grin broadened as he began to lazily stroll toward him while simultaneously removing a small silver flask from his robes and raised it into the air. He was now standing directly behind the captain and gingerly placed a hand on Fefnir's shoulder while removing the cap from the flask with his teeth. "How 'bout a toast to old friends?"
Without waiting for a reply or any kind of physical response he took a gulp of sake from the flask and wandered several feet away, planting himself on the ground at the foot of a large skeletal tree that stood gloomily over the field of crimson flowers. "So..." Kuro said as he stowed the flask away and rested his left hand on the hilt of his zanpakuto, a light beat erupting into the air as his fingers drummed upon the end. "What have you called me here for, Fefnir?" His usual carefree demeanor had faded slightly as his blank stare came to rest on the man before him.

X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X Fefnir could feel the old captain a long ways off, but he still smelled the booze first. In fact, he couldn't remember a time when Kuro HADN'T had some kind of alcohol on his person (or his breath). This time was no exception. Fef was never much of a drinker, so when Kuro came up behind him an asked about a toast, he decided he wouldn't partake. When he turned to the right to say as much, though, Kuro had already meandered over to a tree and plopped down, which resulted in the red man spinning in place like an idiot until he got a visual.
Fef gave a nervous laugh and scratched the back of his head lightly as he walked over to join the old man. He elected not to sit, however; this wasn't going to be a social visit, though it was good to see an old friend. He looked well, considering his drinking habit, though he could use a shave and didn't seem exactly as spry as he had once been. Still, he looked alright, all things considered. At least well enough that Fef wouldn't feel too bad asking for his help. "Maybe after we're done here, I'll treat you," he said with a smile, "But for now, I need to ask a favor,"
His empty red eyes scanned his guest's and he judged it alright to continue. "I need you to fight me so that I can learn a new skill. I tried before with someone else, but he couldn't hurt me enough to make learning it viable. And of course, I have to actually be trying to win the fight, or I can't make any progress with it. You were an obvious choice because very few people have ever hurt me as bad as you did back when I was Yuki's VC," He stopped for a moment, brushed the long red hair out of his eyes, and asked, "Will you help me?"X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X

Kuro ran his fingers through his hair as he contemplated the request. "I see..." He sat motionless, his fingers tangled in his long black locks as he stared up at the man. Without a word he pushed himself onto his feet and leaned lazily against the black bark of the tree. "Shinigami, or should I say, humans in general, are rather curious beings, aren't they? Through life we strive to grow stronger in order to adapt to our world and to rise above the rest. Some wish to be gods and others simply wish to become strong enough to survive in their unforgiving existence." He spoke in a low, slurred voice as he staggered around Fefnir, his eyes darting up and down the man as if sizing him up. "Fine..Fine, fine, fine...I will help you out, I suppose. Though I definitely won't be forgetting your offer to have some drinks later."
Though the man only appeared to be in his twenties, the very aura around him and his kind, yet cold eyes revealed that he was much more experienced than his appearance would lead some to believe. He crossed his arms over his chest with his back turned to Fefnir. His black haori danced in the soft breeze that had manifested and begun to sweep lightly through the area. The stirring air seemed to magnify the scent of the flowers that surrounded them. "I will simply beat you to a pulp until that power you wish to obtain is forced to the surface so that you can wield it. Since you seem so determined I will have to take this seriously and not hold back." Kuro slowly turned his head to glance back at Fefnir. "Plus, I must admit I am rather curious as to how much you have grown since our last encounter. Being the Sou-Taicho after all means you must be quite strong. Who knows, maybe you will even prove to much for me to handle. Though, in my long life, defeat has been a very rare occurrence." Kuro spun on his heel and placed his left hand on his hilt and gripped it tightly. He placed a hand on his chest and half bowed, swaying slightly as he did so. "Anything else you wish to discuss? If not we may begin whenever you are ready."

ENEMY, you may think,_____ but never VILLAIN…__________
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X The former captain's manner made Fefnir smile. Staggering about, repeating himself, slurred speech... he knew once they started, tipsy or not, Kuro wouldn't be a pushover. He knew he'd need to be completely serious once things started, so he steeled himself then and there for the combat ahead, shut out all the excess emotion he could...
A British accent screeched out, Get the ******** on with it, boy! The dragon growled in agreement.
Shut up, you two.
So he got on with it, more or less. Slowly, he pulled the swords from his hip and back, a soft ringing sound coming from them as they burst into gold and silver light, gold on the left and silver on the right, and with a concentrated effort, pulsed reiatsu into his eyes and around his feet, pushing himself to One Step Ocular Shukuchi and the same in his regular Shukuchi. With two blades, he was less aerodynamic, and couldn't reach his top speed with both swords out as a result. Still, he was wicked fast, and it would be no easy task to take him down, even without him releasing a shikai. As he stood there, completely still, it looked like his legs were vibrating slightly, blurring at the edges, and crimson energy poured out of his retinas, coming off in tendrils of crimson. It wasn't often that Fefnir stood after using one of those techniques, mostly because he didn't have any sort of way to relieve the tension caused while standing still, but this was a special exception. He respected Kuro too much to just up and strike. He would give him a definite starting signal before making his move. He cringed against the pain welling up in his limbs as he said, "Let's begin. We'll save the chatter for later. The faster this is done, the better,"
Hah! Foreshadowing. he thought in a surprisingly off-topic moment.
With a sudden forward thrust, Fefnir was gone, rushing in toward Kuro with scattered, intentionally separated steps thrown in to confuse. In just the blink of an eye, he was on his foe's right side, and he struck with a kick to start, using the condensed heat and energy on his feet to deliver the strike at Kuro's shoulder with intense power and speed. Not only would a strike like that hit hard, but would burn as well, maybe even taking a chunk of flesh with it.X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X

Kuro slowed his breathing as he watched Fefnir unsheathe both of his blades that immediately were enshrouded in light. Two blades...interesting. Combined with his speed techniques he should prove to be a challenging opponent. I never have liked fighting speed specialists...they jump around far too much. It was then that Kuro sensed a shift in Fefnir's reaitsu as the captain began focusing the flow to his legs and eyes. The old man's crimson gaze fell upon his opponent's legs where just at the edges a slight blur could be made out. I remember this technique from the last time we battled. Though the name itself escapes me I know that it significantly increases his speed. However, I saw this skill used many years ago. I would be a fool to think he hasn't gotten faster or developed any new techniques to use alongside this one. I must simply watch and learn what I can for the next few minutes. Keep a clear mind and analyze every feature, every detail of your opponent. With a deep breath he continued to stare at Fefnir who had began to talk and then...he moved. With a flash he was darting directly at Kuro with amazing speed, his steps mixed in a flurry of movement in an obvious attempt to confuse his opponent. He was definitely fast, but Kuro was able to easily follow his movements for now, though he was certain this wasn't the captain's top speed. A sly grin formed on Kuro's lips as Fefnir neared him. The captain suddenly appeared on Kuro's right side and performed a powerful kick aimed directly at his shoulder. With a twist of his body, the former captain bent backwards narrowly avoiding the kick, though it did brush his shoulder leaving a light scrape and burn. In the flurry of movement Kuro's zanpakuto seemed to simply appear within the grasp of his right hand as he dodged the attack. He allowed Fefnir's own momentum to carry his kick past him and with a swift flow of motion Kuro slashed his zanpakuto at the captain's other leg, aiming for his inner thigh. If successful he would cut rather deep into the muscle and drastically slow Fefnir's movements. Kuro then shunpoed several feet away with his blade hanging lazily in the grasp of his right hand. He allowed himself a slight glance at his lightly burnt shoulder. He sighed and with a light cough to clear his lungs he steadied himself once more. He released more of his own reaitsu, the many flowers at his feet swayed as the pressure around him changed slightly. Then with no warning he burst into motion, his own speed was quite remarkable as he soared toward his opponent in a single flowing motion. He appeared directly in front of Fefnir and attempted to slash at his abdomen. However, such a head-on attack would be rather foolish against someone bearing two swords. He couldn't help but wonder if Fefnir would realize this in time for as his blade came within range he shunpoed, leaving an after image in his place, only to appear several feet above the captain with his left hand outstretched. If this ruse was successful Fefnir would already be in a sequence of movement to prevent the fake attack. A rather childish technique but it had proven useful in the past. His lips moved rapidly as he whispered the words, "Hado 63: Raikoho". In an instant a giant blast of yellow reaitsu shot towards his opponent directly below him.

ENEMY, you may think,_____ but never VILLAIN…__________
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X Fwoom! Fefnir's foot had the distinct sound of a large object being swung at high speeds as Kuro pulled away from the strike. He continued the motion, pulling his back leg in and creating a right angle with his thigh and calve so that the captain could move forward with the momentum of the attack. Through some luck and some skill, Fef saw the slash coming out of the corner of his eye and had enough time in that split second grace to shift his thigh away from the strike and take some of the power away from the hit. A distinct burning and sticky sensation resulted; Kuro had drawn blood, and a decent amount of it, too. The wound wasn't incredibly deep, but was still bothersome, to say the least, and there was a hole in his lucky uniform now, which was another thing entirely. The familiar metallic scent of the blood mixed with the the musk of his uniform, worn a full day already, and the humidity in the air to create a sickly, swirling olfactory assault, but the captain was more than familiar with the scent of blood; he'd been covered in it so many times it didn't even phase him anymore.
When Fefnir's right foot touched down, he'd managed to turn himself toward Kuro in a combination of athleticism and standard physics resulting from the angle his kick had been delivered at, and he immediately pushed away from the man, retreating to get another, better angle to attack from. It seemed Kuro had the same idea, however, as the ex-captain shunpo'd, creating more distance between the combatants. It was then that he felt the tactician release a bit more of his copious reiatsu, and Fefnir readied himself for the next assault by utilizing his finely-honed agility to quickly move back and forth between three points about twenty yards apart, stopping for just long enough to create a fairly solid image of himself standing in the same position he had been when he's moved back.
It was then that he saw what was wrong with the picture.
The Kuro he had felt vividly wasn't where his image was. He felt Kuro somwhere else, somewhere close, but the shunpo made it a little difficult to track. Then, he recalled something: He opened with this last time! He'll be above, I bet anything he will be! Well, Fef was only partially correct. Kuro had done a similar move directly after entering shikai, but the style of move was the same. The sudden spike of reiatsu above him and the voice calling its name confirmed the red man's need to get out of the way right then and there. He'd even timed it properly to strike above the center image as Fefnir passed beneath it, but Kuro wasn't aware of just how much the former Squad 2 VC had grown.
A sudden, swift direction change sent the red judge spiraling off to the right, circling him around behind his opponent in a fairly large radius, out of range of the kido blast but not quite far enough to make him out of rushing distance. The spell struck the ground with great destructive force, launching debris and blood red petals from the flowers into a massive swirl to concealed both combatants as it furled outward. The reiatsu pouring from Fefnir's eyes had the natural tendency to push the dirt and plant matter away from his field of vision, keeping him from getting blinded by all the obscuring matter floating about, and he used the same reiatsu tracking that had allowed him to dodge to find a rough location of Kuro in the cloud. With the same grace that had saved him from the kidou blast, he moved gently through the cloud toward where he'd last judged Kuro's back to be exposed, and leveled a downward strike with the blade in his left hand, turning himself sideways as he did so to use the first slash as a ballast and to push himself up some in order to bring the left hand sword down with more force from an awkward angle into the shoulder of his opponent.X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X

Kuro watched intently as his kido exploded as it made impact with the ground below. He had missed his target just as he had anticipated. Fefnir had grown stronger and faster since their last encounter and he was slowly learning the extent of the man's growth. It was then that Kuro decided that it was time to stop testing his opponent and truly begin their battle. He had acquired all the information he needed for now. Within moments he was consumed by the thick cloud of debris. Within the shroud of dust and petals he was left blind but not completely defenseless. He would still be able to follow his opponent's movements by tracking the captain's reaitsu. Fefnir's speed was truly remarkable. In a flash of speed he had narrowly avoided the explosion and quickly had appeared directly behind him and was already unleashing his next attack. Kuro remained focused on the captain. He would have to be vigilant of his surroundings and his opponent if he wished to win. Just as Fefnir appeared behind him Kuro burst into motion, turning on his heel in an instant allowing himself to face the captain head on. Sparks flew into the air as his zanpakuto made contact with Fefnir's first strike. The two blades grinded together as Kuro fought to hold the attack off just as the second attack was cutting through the air toward his shoulder. Kuro gathered reaitsu around his left hand as he caught the second blade in mid-swing. However, this had only managed to dull the force of the attack but not totally stop it as a thin stream of blood poured from his palm and down his wrist. Ignoring the pain, Kuro tightened his grasp on the blade and used both of Fefnir's zanpakuto as a platform to launch himself upward. He arched his back as he soared upward, using the force of his thrust to send a powerful kick toward Fefnir's chin. Kuro thin shifted his weight so that he would still continue flying until he was only a few feet above Fefnir. His reaitsu suddenly spiked as he muttered an incantation. "Bakudo 39: Enkosen." A round shield formed directly above him. He flew toward it and planted his feet firmly on its surface and with a shot of reaitsu to the soles of his feet he launched himself off of it, the shield shattering under the force, and flew downward directly towards Fefnir. He raised his zanpakuto focusing his incredible strength into his swing as he fell, using the momentum of his fall to increase the strength of the strike. His reaitsu flowed into his blade as it began to glow with intense heat that would sear any flesh it touched. With this attack he would attempt to cleave Fefnir in two.

ENEMY, you may think,_____ but never VILLAIN…__________
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X Fefnir's eyes widened as the kick was delivered, and out of pure reflex, his arm flew in to try and absorb some of the force. That reflex was the only thing that kept the red man's jaw in place and him more or less on his feet as he bore the strike with a slight grunt of effort. The strike hit his arm solidly, and he felt the strain on his bones almost immediately, but he was honestly more scars than skin at this point in his life, so the sheer toughness the captain had acquired kept him thinking and moving. The arm was forced practically to his chin anyway, and the force pushed him backward several feet as the tactician's momentum carried him into the air more. It would have taken a novice off-balance, maybe even a moderately skilled shinigami, but with the experience under his belt that Fefni had, he kept himself somewhat balanced and landed fairly solidly.
Kuro's grab had been impressive, sure, but he'd seen others do it, and knew that unless Kuro actively worked to take the blade from him, he just needed to continue holding it and he'd keep control, so he'd prepared himself a little more for what would be coming afterward instead. This happened to be something pretty cool, and something that would have been useful to know if Fefnir was any good at kidou: the shields could be used to redirect movement. The ex-captain launched himself solidly toward the red judge, blade searing hot, and with the force of that shunpo behind it, the strike was extremely strong. It had one problem, though.
Fefnir wasn't standing still.
When Fefnir uses Shukuchi, he's not standing flat-footed, waiting on the enemy to get to him. He's actively pursuing and engaging in minor hits here and there, wearing at the opponent for the most part. It's basically high speed guerrilla tactics, one man against another or against a group, and that's part of what made the captain of Squad 1 so formidable. It was so damn hard to hit him a few times in a row at the beginning of a fight, so you had to hit him strong with the first or second hit, before he got in his counter-strikes, like the one he'd deliver moments after the ex-captain landed.
At One Step Shukuchi, Fefnir was quick enough not only to move out of the way of the powerful slash altogether by just running forward, but could cut back toward the one who launched it just as quickly. The slash was delivered to a little remainder of energy left by his small stop when Fef perceive Kuro's move with his One Step Ocular, combined with the ambient heat of Fefnir's reiatsu, and the red man took his chance to try and lay another slash on his foe. He pushed forward, powerfully and nigh-soundlessly moving among the crimson poppies toward an opponent he thought wouldn't be expecting it, and just as he would have been in range of a counterattack from the blade in the right hand, he made a shard step around the back and aimed a cut upward from the right side of the stomach up along his back. He assisted this motion by allowing the momentum to carry him along, turning him toward the man as he landed and skidded backward while facing Kuro's former location.X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
