V'tur was down at the shores of the lakes with Iweith. The two of them had just come back from flying passes.. He was hot and tired just as his brown was ready for a doze in the sun. Hatching would be occurring soon at Malvern and with the possibility of his Weyrleaders wanting to attend or anyone else, V'tur was of the mind that all the loose ends should be tied first. A task he took upon himself, at least within his wing. The brown rider knew his place in the weyr and was quite content with it.
"It's been a long day, Iweith. A good swim and then a nice nap in the sun. There are no signs of felines here, at least that I noticed from the air." V'tur commented.
Iweith merely snorted and plodded to the lake. Settled down into the soft mud at the banks, the brown looked in all directions as if trying to sense anything that might be out there. No. I believe it is okay. I would like to wade for a little while.
Striping out of his riding gear down to his light shirt and rolling his pants up, V'tur waded in after his dragon. His arms had older scars from a vicious canine attack when he had been a younger man. Now, just in his 3rd decade, V'tur could be called a decent looking fellow who had filled into this frame then taken it and made it stronger. Life had worn on him, allowing gray hairs and some wrinkles to line his face. "We don't have to report right away, so the afternoon is ours."

With drilling for the day over, another pair had come down to the shore of that particular lake for some relaxation. As the dragon of the pair was blue Opeth, this was taking some time to achieve. First he had been too tired from drills to want to move from the first place he set down, then he hissed that said place was uncomfortable and stomped over to a nicer bit of sand. After a while, he had decided he was far too hot and risen to wade into the lake.
Xan, who had been leaning back against him and dozing at the time, had fallen flat on her back in the sand. After a laugh and a not especially complementary comment flung at her lifemate, she had risen to join him; for one she loved to swim, and for another her thick black curly hair had become full of sand.
So it was that neither noticed the approach of the brown and his rider; the first Xan knew of them was a flash of movement out of the corner of her eye as she surfaced from a dive. Treading water, she shielded her eyes from the sun with one hand and squinted to see who had come down to the shore.
As her eyes settled on the lanky brown, she grinned. "Hey Opeth, it's V'tur and Iweith; I'm going to say hello." She wasn't exactly the best of best friends with V'tur, but she knew him as well as she knew many of Trine's riders and liked him fairly well. As such, she gave a piercing whistle to draw attention to herself and began to swim towards the brown rider and his partner.
Opeth, who was still swimming around underwater, gave a deep grumble, his eyes fading from a grudgingly content green to a dull annoyed orange. "Mine, I do not like either of them, why are you always so happy to see everyone?" Strange woman, even though she was His he did not understand her at all. She seemed to think the world was made of sunshine and rainbows, and would never hear otherwise from anyone... A small part of the blue acknowledged that this was one of the reasons he had chosen her, but the rest of him just got on with being cross.
Xan gave a snort of amusement at her lifemate's grumbling, and informed him that he was a silly grumpy tail as she drew closer to V'tur. Once she was able to stand up, she squeezed water out of her hair and offered the other rider a grin. "Hey V'tur, how're you and Iweith doing today?" He was a pretty good looking guy, V'tur, had she been a green rider she wouldn't have minded Iweith catching her dragon in the least!

Iweth was paddling around the waters when he noticed the blue come in and go underwater. Opeth. That one was forever in a foul mood and didn't like his pranks at all. Iweith, while the type of dragon other colors could look up to, was a much happier spirit. Still, he paid his respects to the other dragon. Good day, Opeth.
V'tur, in the meanwhile, was floating on his back when the piercing whistle had caught his attention. Allowing himself to sink so that he may get a look at who was doing the noise making, he caught a flash of a long black ponytail. Xan. He knew her from around Trine. Her blue was a very moody sort. Raised with a good set of manners, he swam in her general direction. When he was close enough, he called out to her. "Hello there, Xan and Opeth. Finished for the day or not even started yet?"

"Iweth." Opeth acknowledged the larger dragon grudgingly, because Xan pestered him if he just ignored people. "Mine hopes that you and yours are well," he added, again to avoid getting prodded by his rider. "See," the blue now addressed said annoying female, "I have greeted the jester, so you have no reason to tug on my tail later."
"Good boy," Xan grinned, holding a hand up to V'tur to let him know she was addressing her sulky partner, "but you'd better keep being civil to him!" Iweth being Iweth probably didn't care too much whether or not Opeth was nice to him, but she happened to know that deep down the blue liked to be around other dragons, and that wasn't going to happen if he just blanked them or grumbled at them.
Now focusing on the other rider once more, Xan pushed her waterlogged black curls out of her face "We're done for the day now," she affirmed with a nod and an easy grin, "just down here to relax for a bit now. You guys all finished up too?" She had a vague idea of when the other wings usually drilled, but sometimes schedules changed for one reason and another.

We are fine. Our turn for Pass duty. How dull to fly around and see that nothing is going on. Iwieth replied in a friendly tone. The brown ducked his head under water and blew bubbles in Opeth's direction. He then turned and used his wing to flip water at V'tur. Wet!
V'tur gave Xan a look. She was not quite as diligent in duties as he was but she was a damn good flyer in the air. And she had an air of confidence about her that he admired. But he had a strict policy of avoiding any closeness to others unless Iweith managed to win a Flight. Which was not something he encouraged. Still, it did good to be social and "It's our turn to fly Pass along with D'nay. You know him? He flies black Kassieth over the more rural areas. You know blacks and their sense of where."
Though V'tur came from a more traditional Weyr, he approved of the use of Atypicals to help fill in the ranks. A dragon was a dragon and that was all that mattered to him. "Iwieth wanted to relax before the evening meal. How have your dr---"
And then the wave hit them both.

She had been about to say something about D'nay, she did know him a little but hardly brilliantly, but before V'tur could finish his sentence allowing her to speak, the pair of them were drenched by a sizable wave.
"Watch out," Opeth sent a moment later, "Iweth is splashing around like a hatchling."
"Oh thanks Opeth!" Xan replied, spluttering and wiping water from her face. "Well, that was unexpected," she grinned once she'd recovered herself. "I'd suggest we go get our own back on him but he's way too fast for either of us to catch him, and it'll be a wam day between before Opeth wants to join in with something as silly as splashing around!" Sometimes a small part of her wished that a more fun-loving dragon had chosen her, but in the end it could only be Opeth for her; he might be a grump but he was her grump.

"Iweith! You brat!" V'tur bobbed in the water and huffed. The more serious of the two, the brown rider frowned at his dragon but let it go as the other rider didn't seem to take offense. He was happy he had stripped down to his lightest clothing, in this sun it wouldn't take too long to dry out. "Oh, we could get him back and he would let us. But then it would become a game of who getting whom that would last until the Turn's End I am sure."
You looked like you could use some fun. And Opeth needs to be shook up every once in a while. We could play catch me. The brown swam over to the two humans and looked down. Or I could go to the beach and sun. I feel like a shipfish.
"All ashore who is going ashore, eh?" V'tur asked human and both dragons.

Xan wiped down her face again, still chuckling to herself. "I'm not even going to try to compete with your Iweith," she grinned at her fellow rider, "I'm sure I'd get worn out way before him. Still, yea, I've had enough of the water for now." So saying, she began to wade to the shore and addressed her lifemate. "You coming mister grumpy tail, or would you rather lurk in there?" she asked teasingly.
"Mrr. I shall come," Opeth groused, "but only because I am getting too cool in the water." It had nothing to do with wanting to be with people, nothing at all.
Giving a snort of amusement, Xan shook her head. "Sure it isn't Opeth," she murmured, "suuuuure." As she stepped out of the water, the curvy woman stretched with a contented sigh and wriggled her toes in the sand. "Not too hot, not too cold," she commented, "gotta love it."
Not far behind her was Opeth, and the blue padded past her without bothering to pause, his eyes dull orange. "There," he flumped down and curled up, laying his head on the ground and glowering over at His, "I came out with you. I hope you are happy."
Smiling softly, Xan padded over to the grouchy creature and bent to pat his muzzle. "Thanks Opeth," she said aloud, "I do appreciate it."

"I must say, he is mellowing out as he gets older. This morning, he only hid his straps for a whole candle instead of two," V'tur chuckled lightly. He had made it to shore and looked down. His clothes were clinging to him, not that there was much to look at and the plan was to let the sun dry him out. "I heard that up north, they use springs and fancy muds as a way to relax. Imagine, wading around in the mud all day. I think its rumor."
I am happy. Opeth, you should relax and enjoy. Iweith chided. The brown had walked up and sat down behind the brown. His eyes are green-blue in merriment as he plotted his next move. He couldn't get the blue too angry but Opeth really did need to lighten up. Careful the trundle bugs. They will crawl everywhere with their scratchy legs.

Xan wrinkled her nose in distaste, shaking her head as V'tur mentioned the mud. "Seriously? Ew. Weird. I'll play around in the mud after a storm for a bit of fun, but I can't imagine relaxing in it. Mind you, everything's weird up north; they don't even like Atypical dragons. None of their weyrwomen can be all that bright, after all this time it should be pretty obvious that they're an asset, right?"
"Mrr," Opeth rumbled aloud as he thought that grumpy thought at the other dragon. "If any of them trundle on me, I'll eat them." Stupid brown, and stupid Xan for keeping him here. He had half a mind to just go back to their Weyr... Maybe in a bit. He'd tolerate the idiots for a bit longer yet.

V'tur made a scoffing noise in the back of his throat. "I heard that Benden's been sticking it's nose into Malvren's business. Hope they don't come meddling round here. Mind you, I come from Igen and they are considered a traditional weyr but not as hidebound as Benden or Fort."
It was one of the few time he mentioned his home before this one.
"As for colors, a dragon is a dragon and important no matter what. It's just like taking a bovine calf from the mother when it's stuck. You need to do what you can to save a life."
Iweith used his tail to tickled at Opeth's tail. Then he quickly pulled his tail back in and did his best to look innocent. In fact, if a dragon could whistle... The brown replied with a straight voice. If you eat them, they will stink your mouth up.
