when I was creating this subforum, I was thinking about all the part of Japanese Pop Culture, and I thought of Pocky. I'm trying to decide if its appeal is the product itself or just the marketing. it's very interesting.

Mastarrghen Tasogare Anyone ever tried Nattou? I never have, but then I'd be scared to from the things I've heard about it. sweatdrop I heard its really... BLEK!! xp , especially to foreigners. no, but I have taken a whiff of it, and it wasn't pleasent. My friend whose studying in Japan said in one of his emails that he had it and it was "one of the most disgusting, foul things" he'd ever had. A lot of Japanese people don't seem to like it that much either. It seems every culture has questionable food that only a minority actually like. Like poi in Hawaii. The english have some strange food too.

i think pocky is appealing cause it's convenient and has all kinds of flavors, endless possibilities!
i have never tried or seen actual nattou, unless i have, but it was under a different name... does it even have an english or any other language name for it?
wasabi is the spiciest green thing i've ever tasted!! usually, people eat raw stuff (raw fish....) with wasabi, because they say that it helps prevent stomach aches. there's also wasabi-flavoured chips and other flour-based snacks. they also taste good on the first couple dry seaweeds, but after that, IIIICE PLEEEASE!!!!

Which is why I never want to try wasabi . I mostly like the normal chocolate pocky, mostly because it's the only kind I can find over here where I live

OMG natto. DO NOT TRY IT FOR THE LOVE OF WESTERN HUMANITY! xp
Unless you like the taste of rotten soy beans.
Japanese just absolutely LOVE to ask a foreigner "oh... do you like natto?" because they know that 90% of the time the reaction will be one of sheer disgust... and they just smirk and laugh inside themselves. TRUST ME someone in Japan WILL ask you and send me 1000 yen if they do the exact thing I said they would! mrgreen
After seeing my husband eat it everyday for 2 years, it is almost.. tempting. Really, when he smears it all over white rice, it does look almost appetizing, probably reminding me of something melty-cheese-covered.
I did take a mouthful of the stuff 3 years after my first taste (and that was when I had only one bean), but the result was still... BLECH.
Gaijin just.. cannot like natto.
