The sun had long gone left the sky, the only light to the world being the moon and the stars. So boldly, so proudly they shined their light to help guide the creatures of the night. One such creature wasn't so much a creature of the night, but just more along the lines of one whom wasn't ready to settle just yet.

Her black coat seemed to blend her amongst the shadows, yet her white markings sort of acted like a dead giveaway along with her pale wheat locks.

Deirdre slowly sank her gaze from the sky above to the lake that sat in front of her. Pale eyes met the reflecting ones staring straight back at her.

Same coat, same eyes, same hair, same expression, hey even the same fireflies dancing around her.

She couldn't help but wonder why her life had gone the way it had, and if it would continue down the same track.

Deirdre. The name breathed through his mind as Malchediel trotted briskly down the path. He had never met a mare like her before. She was only a regular soquili, though inwardly he scoffed at the distinction. His mother was "only" a regular soquili too. It was only his father and his sisters that were the high and distinguished angeni.

That night he was searching for her nearby the area where they had first met. He had a sprig of magnolia flowers in his mouth and was freshly decorated with leather bands that he had received from the humans, a feather he had seen fall from a hawk, and the paw of some creature that looked fierce, though he couldn't identify it. He thought that he cut an impressive figure and hoped that Deirdre would think the same.

Of course she will!
he told himself as he went. What mare wouldn't find me handsome... dashing... brave... He smiled around the branch at those thoughts. Yes, he'd charm her into being his soon enough! He was certain of it.

Ahead of him he saw the light of fireflies reflecting off a glassy surface. A lake? He came out from the trees and saw an expanse of water stretching out before him. It was a pretty enough scene, but what really caught his eye was the glimpse of a black and white figure further down the bank. Deirdre!

After a passing moment the mare smiled and shook her head in slight amusement, her wheat colored locks tossing around as a light spring breeze breeze passed by. How was she supposed to move on from her problem if she was constantly thinking about all the bad moments and having 'Why me' moments. She suppose it was because of the fact that standing in place is always easier than moving in to the unknown.

Letting out a silent sigh she watches as the trees shook lightly, a few leaves drifting off and hitting the water to sale around like miniature canoes.

'What's that?'

Deirdre's stance stiffened a tad as she felt like eyes were being laid on her. Was a Kalona? A skinwalker? Maybe it was just another Soq passing by, but even if that they wouldn't stand around watching her for too long, right?

Willing up some courage she slowly turned her head, her pale eyes scanning the treeline for any kind of figure, and there it was, a stallion. A familiar stallion at that. 'Malchadeil...' The mare sighed at the sight of the stallion she had encountered who knows how long ago. It wasn't too long, but in her mind it seemed like forever since she figured a second meeting was impossible, but it seemed like he made a note to make it a reality.

"I see you've managed to find me after all. Did you really want to meet me again so badly?"

Malchediel puffed up and brightened when he heard the mare utter his name. He tried to reply back with something suave and charming but the magnolia branch in his mouth garbled his words into senselessness. That was embarrassing. Malchediel recovered his aplomb as quickly as he could and pulled the smile back onto his face. He was still charming. Some mares found a bit of clumsiness cute, he knew.

It was obvious he couldn't talk until he had the flowers out of his mouth, so he extended them out towards Deirdre. Though he still couldn't talk properly he hoped that she would understand the offering gesture.

Her ears flicked as her brow slowly rose at the splattered and muffled 'words' that escaped the stallion's mouth. As she blinked and tilted her head in slight confusion, she couldn't help but find the moment odd, yet slightly amusing none the less. He might have looked foolish, but at least it had a positive note to it.

Shaking her head, her mane bouncing a tad, Deirdre stared at the flowers that were being offered to her. That was just another clue that Malchediel's 'promise' wasn't going to be left untouched and untried for.

Did the male really want to try and play such a game with her, to waste time trying to win a heart that had long sense been locked away? Well if he wanted to, then she wasn't going to stop him. She would just have to make sure to always be a step ahead, but what if things take a turn, no, going down such a road once more wouldn't be an option again, she hoped...

"Well, thank you. They're beautiful." She carefully stepped closer to the stallion and reached out to gently take the flowers in her own mouth. Looking them over, the mare trotted her way to the nearby tree to set them down for now. "Now, what was it you were trying to say before?"

She took the flowers! That had to mean that she liked him, didn't it? Malchediel's optimism bloomed and he smiled widely. Up close he could see clearly the beauty that had captivated him as soon as he had met Deirdre. He loved the way her hair fell in soft curls around her face, the way the white markings on her back looked like white clouds in the night sky. He started to smile dreamily but caught himself.

"I was trying to say..." He couldn't remember exactly what he had been trying to say but he thought of something else quickly. "I was trying to say that... that the moon shines down and is beautiful but that you're far more beautiful! To me. And to everyone else... or you really ought to be." He wasn't used to giving compliments and it came out overly dramatic and overly long.

If the pauses in the male's words meant anything to Deirdre she would have to guess one of two things; either he was making stuff up off the top of his pretty little head, or he was just plain bad at coming up with romantic compliments and phrases. She may have not been able to give him an A for being smooth, but he could have points for effort, if anything else. Either way, the mare couldn't help but raise an amused brow at the moment.

"Oh, well, thank you? I guess someone who is chasing after another would think something like that, but as many have said, there are those more beautiful and worthwhile than myself. I have learned the truth of that line very well over time. However,"

The mare turned away from the flowers and made her way towards Malchediel. She stopped a foot or so away and just stared him straight in the eye, though she tried to keep a strong look on the outisde, her guts and mind were screaming at her to just move away and leave.

"Why would someone like you want to bother with me anyway?"

Malchediel's nostrils flared halfway through Deirdre's talk and by the time she was close to him he had lost track of her final question entirely. Instead of answering why he would bother with her, Malchediel responded to the earlier statement. "Many have told you you're not beautiful?" he growled. His ears flattened back and he tossed his head in protective aggravation.

"Got any names? I'll find them and I'll kick their teeth out if they say you aren't beautiful." In the middle of his angry huff he remembered that he had been trying to be suave. He was starting to revert to his usual behavior and he didn't know if shouting about kicking people's teeth in was actually very romantic. Suddenly chagrined, he stopped and scrambled to think of something else to say.

"I mean... er... Why would anyone say you're not beautiful when you're as beautiful as... as the stars in the sky!" If his first compliment had been awkward this one was even mroe so, especially since he had compared her to the moon for his last one and the stars now.

Deirdre silently sighed and shook her head at the stallion's jumping words. To go from breaking teeth to the stares in the sky, my he must be a in a mix of confusion and nervousness, or something that wasn't exactly trying to work together for him. Still though, she just couldn't come to understand why someone with so much spunk and life would want to chase after someone like herself. It must just be someone kind of phase, right? Could he really be spilling stuff he really meant, actually words that held truth?

Mentally shaking her head, Dei made her way back over towards the lake where she was once standing to watch the summer fireflies and the moon glisten against the shimmering water.

"As beautiful as the stars huh?" Whatever he was seeing, it must have been something he could only pick up because she rarely saw something so bright within herself, someone she once was so long buried under times of wear and tear.

"Are you sure about that, Malchediel?" She stopped by the edge of the lake, a bit of the water making small waves at against the bank and hitting her hooves. Her eyes glances over the flying orbs of light that danced around the willow trees and above the lake. "Can you really see someone who shines as bright as the stars? Someone who can strike the imagination and make people dream with all their imagination? Someone who can make people yearn and wish far and wide across all areas and put all their hopes and dreams in to it? Would you really match me up with something that is so beautiful, yet so unreachable, and when it decides to fall to the level of everyone else then those who believe the most will take the time to travel miles to find it to hold it in their arms?

Malchediel followed Deirdre to the lakeside but his gaze did not linger where hers did. While she looked out over the water he watched her. Why would he want to look at something so common as fireflies when she stood right there in front of him? He could see fireflies any night.

He listened as she spoke and her words struck a chord within him. Somehow she spoke the words about herself that he wished could have come from his lips. How was it that she could describe what he was feeling without even knowing that it was? The false bravado began to melt off Mal in hearing those words.

"Yeah... I can see someone like that," he said when she was finished. "It's just like that. I just couldn't say it like that."

Deirdre stared at Machediel out of the corner of her eye as her ears lightly flicked at his words. Really, such a thing seemed impossible to one part of her, yet her more "logical" and "open" side, the side that still believed in such fairytales, told her such feeling still did exist with some souls out in the world.

"If such feelings hold true for you, then why not explain it to me then, if such a request can be done?" She slowly moved to stand face to face with the stallion.

"You say things connected with love, lust, puppy love, whatever it may be for you. You follow me, bring me gifts, try you best to spill sweet words, but why? Because you claim to be attracted to me? Well tell me, why are you attract to me? Because I am "beautiful", or maybe because I am just something to fix then leave?"

Deirdre shook her head and gave a sigh at her own questions. Why did she always have to bring up such things like she was interviewing someone?

"Just tell me, why should I even give someone like yourself my delicate heart? Why should I even trust you with the thought of such things, when you may eventually grow up and move on? For all I know I am most likely a part of a case of puppy love, so you will move on from me when you open your eyes."

That had stung. Mal blinked a little in shock while his thoughts ran riot in his head. She thought it was just puppy love? That he wanted to fix her and leave? Why would she think that? A little stab of frustration followed. Did he do something wrong? He hadn't thought so. He had tried so hard to do everything right but for some reason she wasn't responding like he hoped she would.

"I wasn't planning on fixing you and leaving..." he said with an attempt at neutrality that didn't quite cover his conflicted confusion. "I didn't know you needed to be fixed."

As soon as he said it he wondered if that was another wrong thing to say. There was something wrong with her that he hadn't noticed. He had just admitted to not even noticing that she wasn't quite all right. Stupid.

"I mean..." He hurriedly tried to salvage things. "I mean I really like you. And I haven't ever liked anyone like this, so maybe it's that puppy thing you're talking about..." His brow furrowed with a slight huff. "But if it is just puppy love then it doesn't feel like it. I wouldn't say things and make myself look stupid if it wasn't for a good reason." On purpose, that is.

Her ears slowly folding back, the mare couldn't help but feel a slight ping of guilt stabbing her in the chest. She knew her words sounding depressing at times, and at others were enough to make some fed up with her and push them to leave, but it wasn't something she could help. In her own mind it was just better to be hurt and alone than to be surrounded by others who could continue to hurt her.

Shifting a bit, Deirdre kept her gaze on anything except the male. Her guilt was enough at the moment. She couldn't imagine it getting any better if the expression on his face was something she wouldn't want to see.

"You say that, but..." she shook her head as she tried to swallow the mix of emotions battling within her. "But it's hard to believe words you've heard so many times before only to find out they were nothing but lies."

With a light chuckle she turned her attention back to the lake to stare at her own reflection.

"I'm sure your words could be true and full of good intentions, and I do want to believe that, especially since I always told myself there had to be someone trustworthy among all the liars out there, but as I said it's hard for a shattered heart to learn to trust again. If...if you do happen to mean what you say, and you feel your feeling are true, then, I suppose, even with a guarded heart, I can try and open up to you."

Malchediel drew in a quick breath. Did she just say she'd open up to him? The potential weight of his actions seemed to be drifting down upon him. There was so much about her that he didn't know. He hadn't expected to have such a potential of responsibility. He had thought that he'd be nice to the pretty mare and that maybe she'd like him and they could enjoy themselves together.

He wasn't exactly the most schooled in mare emotional behavior, but even Mal knew that what she was offering him was important. He was suddenly filled with uncertainty. What was he supposed to do now? What if he didn't do it right?

He took a cautious step toward her then another. He still wasn't close enough to touch but he had bridged some of the distance between them. The look on her face sent a stab of emotion through Malchediel's heart. He didn't want to disappoint her. That was what he understood.

"Thank you... I think," he said while watching her and feeling those flickers of emotion running through him. "For trusting me, I mean. I'm not a mean person. I'd protect my sisters with my life and you're..." He hesitated, not knowing what was going to come to his lips next. "You're important just like them... or I want you to be, at least." No longer was he saying pretty things for the sake of saying them. Now he was in uncharted territory, in the realm of true emotion.
