I was having a discussion today with family members that we as humans are taking a toll on the world around us, making species go extinct etc.
They argued that we should protect animals threatened with extinction, I think this should not happen for a few simple reasons.

Would you protect the cockroach if it went extinct? How about mosquito's? Or maybe lice and flee's?
Nobody would, now these animals will not go extinct fast because of their physiology and evolutionary advantages over other species.

But animals like panda's should be protected, while they have a terribly low reproduction rate, can only feed on bamboo and 75% of their offspring will be smothered to death because their mother rolls on them in their sleep. This seems to me like a terribly disfunctional species, and if we wouldn't interfere they would go extinct anyway.

Several predators hunted certain other animals into extinction, this is natures way of weeding out the weaker sorts. We as humans have a great advantage as we have the ability to think and create tools that help us to survive. But to think that we are no longer part of nature is idiocy, we are still evolving, and maybe if we make certain species go extinct its the way of nature.

I agree on one point: man is still an animal, there is no real line between man's world and nature. And while you do make a good case for allowing 'weaker' species to expire, I can think of worse things to expend our energy on.

I think if we took all the money and effort that it would take to make one new reality television series, one new fast food franchise or one more late night infomercial and instead put it toward keeping some interesting strain of bacteria alive and then it still went extinct -even then I personally would think it was a better use for those resources.

But that's just my take on it. People can do what ever they want to with their time & resources.
