Had it been days since he fled the pride? He couldn't really remember, his sleep schedule having been thrown off badly by running through at least one night. Or was it two? Gods and spirits, it wasn't normal for a cheetah to be unable to tell how long he'd been awake and running. Of course, being a cheetah he was mostly limited to sprinting, and being injured he tended to do a lot of limping in between sprints. He decided to blame his confusion on the pain in his forepaw. Running on it wasn't helping, but he was sufficiently disoriented that he was no longer even aware of whether or not he was within the boundaries of his pride's lands or whether he had entered the rogue lands. For a cheetah who had been a runner for his pride, that was a little embarrassing. He was supposed to be intimately acquainted with every rock, tree, and puddle in the pride's lands. Either way, he knew they'd be after him and he had to press on.

His stomach growled and he realized he hadn't eaten in about as long as he hadn't slept. Longer, if he recalled correctly. He dropped reluctantly from his sprinting gait and began to plod along limpingly. His fear of pursuit was still sufficient to overcome a great deal of the discomfort of running, but it was a relief not to be running any more. He turned his blue eyes to the scenery, looking for familiar landmarks or maybe something to eat.

As he made his cautious way, he put his uninjured forepaw down on something that was obviously not the ground and jumped back, startled. The action of jumping back shifted a great deal of his weight to his injured forepaw and he went down with a groan that was half an attempt at a growl. He was injured, but he wasn't weak!

Dormin had been dreaming about butterflies. How pretty they were, and how fun it was to chase them. And how nice and gooey they were when you finally chomped them to bits. She smirked in her sleep and rolled over, just as something hard jabbed her in the side. "HEY!" She bolted awake, rolling to her feet and turning a circle to find what'd poked her so rudely. Of course the purp was easy enough to spot, with his bold red fur standing out even more than her livid green. "You stepped on me!" She huffed and tossed her head, fixing him with a look. "I thought cheetahs knew to look where they were going when they were running...hey. Hey your paw looks pretty brised there! Tell me that's not just from stepping on me!" She rolled her eyes and moved closer. "Geez. What's your name kid? You look pretty banged up. Huh...yup. Looks like you been fighting! Good thing you were out here and not in my home. Fighting's illegal when it gets this rough. Now let me see..."

Princess_Feylin
Mana scrambled backward hastily, disregarding how uncomfortable it was for him to do so. Delightful. He'd stumbled across a lion, and not only a lion, but a green lion. A dishonorable death in the last life. Before he was even aware of it, Mana's expression shifted from one of dismay to disdain. He may be a spiritless cheetah, but at least his coat wasn't visible proof that his last death had been dishonorable. He managed to school his expression to neutrality just before his scornful look reached a sneer. That would probably be a bad idea, considering how agile and limber this lioness appeared to be.

"I assure you it was accidental," Mana replied, bristling. "And it's not my fault that your coat is the same color as the grass. The fault for that lies with..."

He trailed off, making a split-second decision that he couldn't very go around spouting Mizumu'Tungikia beliefs now that he was no longer a member of the pride. Doing so would only make him stand out and when his pursuers came this way they would only have to ask if anyone had seen a cheetah of their pride and he'd be readily identified. It would be better - much better - if he could pass for just a regular rogue. That would attract far less attention. Thank the gods and spirits that he was invisble to the eyes of spirits. That's probably why she hadn't sensed him and woken before he managed to step on her.

"I'm Mana," he answered, not having a ready reply for when someone asked his name. He'd need to work on that in the future, he thought to himself.

It somehow didn't surprise him that this green lioness came from a place where fighting was illegal. She would probably be green in every incarnation until the end of time. Mana definitely didn't want someone with such a disgraceful spirit looking at or trying to heal his paw. And so he lied unconvincingly, "It's not nearly as bad as it looks. Even if it was, I really don't have time to hang around and mess with healers."

ShinosBee
Alright now, what was with that look he was giving? You'd think she was something foul or a pile of goo or other, with that face. Geez, the thanks she got for trying to help people..."The fault for that lies with my mother, thank you. A great warrior, I'm glad I got her markings." She puffed herself proudly. "Being green makes it easier to hide from my prey. You on the other hand, well." She chuckled. "Well your name's certainly nicer than your tone, Mana. You go around treating everyone who tries to help you like they've rolled in rhino dung?" She raised a brow at him. "Maybe that's what got you hurt to start with," She mumbled to herself before scooting closer. "And you're worse at lying than you are at watching where you're going. Give it here now. I'm NOT a healer, but I know a thing or two about battle injuries. That's what my pride's all about, you know. We police the area, make sure people don't get picked on or abused. YOU look like you've been had at, both the way that paw looks AND your attitude."

Princess_Feylin
She was proud of her markings? Her mother was a warrior? Gods and spirits, outsiders were strange. Mana felt a fleeting moment of panic as he thought these things and wondered if it was too late to return to the pride and beg to be forgiven. He would return as a slave, though, and only if he was fortunate. As a slave he would be mutilated for his participation in the rebellion and his flight. No. It was definitely too late for him to go back, which meant he had to keep running. And, apparently, he'd have to deal with strange people like this one. What a joy. He grimaced at the thought and hoped it would be mistaken for a reaction to how his paw felt. It did feel grimace-worthy, but he was too proud to show that willingly.

"I'm sorry," he said, backpedaling. "I was startled and, as you can see, in some pain. It's not an ideal condition for speaking. I should have thought before I spoke."

He debated letting her look at his paw. If she was really trained in battle injuries, it would be good to have her assistance, but he couldn't help thinking that she was not a creature worthy of his respect, let alone his trust. The idea of a pride that policed the area was alien to him, and he was entirely certain he wanted nothing to do with them. A pride that forbade fights and thought itself deserving of monitoring and controlling others' actions seemed like just the sort of pride he wanted to avoid. They'd probably feel obligated to turn him in as a runaway slave, too, when his pursuers reached them. Unless they knew what was in store for him with the Mizimu'Tungiku. Then they'd probably be horrified and take his side. He was distinctly unimpressed by this pride.

"I appreciate your concern," he said, making an effort to sound polite and reasonable. "But really it only looks bad because I've been running on it." It didn't occur to him that he should probably prepare an excuse for why he was running.

ShinosBee
Hmph! Well he sure was a character. And all she wanted to do was help. Of course she didn't miss his mention of running, and she eyed him closer. "You're running? Hmm..." she looked thoughtful and then nodded. "Well if you're on the lam, you could come stay with us. We don't let people be bullied when they can't protect themselves. At the very least you should stop off to get food. If not, and you keep running on that, it'll probably never heal right. I doubt you want to be a cripple forever. You've got too much spunk for that."She nudged him and grinned toothily. "Seems like you'd be quite the spitfire in your top form. Shame. Then again, if you're going to be rude and refuse my help, maybe I should just report you. A refugee who doesn't want help's MUCH more suspicious than someone fleeing tormentors. Hmm..." Perhaps she could goad him into letting her help!

Princess_Feylin
Mana's eyes widened enormously as he began to realize what he'd gotten himself into. Spirits but this was a mess. Let it serve as a lesson, he decided, that he must be more cautious, even if it meant sacrificing speed. It wouldn't do to be caught because he had been careless. A voice in the back of his mind pointed out that his entire behavior was cowardly and that he deserved whatever he got, but he couldn't quite bring himself to believe the voice. He knew he was of relatively great worth. After all, he'd been elevated from the rank of follower to runner. He flicked his tail as though he could brush those thoughts away as easily as flies. This was not the time to reflect on the past, but rather to think about the future.

"I'm a cheetah. I run," he said with an off-handed shrug. "I would go mad if I couldn't run."

It took him a few seconds to realize that by his own words he had put himself in a position where he really had no good cause to refuse her help. And he still hadn't come up with a better reason for him to be running. Indeed, from the explanation he'd just given there was no reason for him to be in any sort of hurry. He should have time to let her help him, at least based on what he'd just said. He mourned his own idiocy in speaking without planning his words. He would definitely deserve it if he was captured.

With a weary sigh he tried his hand at lying again, this time keeping as close to the truth as he could, "I really am in a hurry to reach my destination. I can't afford to lose time to an extended period of healing. But you're right. I can't afford to be crippled either."

the cheetah looked conflicted...Of course Dormin had begun to suspect that perhaps he himself was a shady character, but so far he'd done nothing she could discern wrong, aside from nearly insulting her. Innocent until guilty and all that. So for now she'd have to take his side. Regardless of if he was good or bad, at least he'd given her something to do for a change. And for that she would forgive him almost insulting her coat.

"Aha!" She seized on his words. "So why not let me look at least? I think you can be a bit late. Better than never making it there. This area is fairly peaceful, but a little further on it gets hairy. There's deserts and canyons and all sorts of wonderful prides that aren't nearly as eager to help as mine is. Now then." With a grin she flumped herself right down beside the cheetah and layed a leg over his.

"It's certainly swollen. Let me see the underside...you didn't go through any thorns, right? Hmm. It's not broken, I think. That looks much nastier. Tell me if this hurts..." She applied a gentle pressure to the joint with her other paw.

Mana extended his paw reluctantly. Looking at it critically for the first time since it was actually injured. There was dried blood left by an attacker's teeth which was not nearly so obstructive as it had been when wet and flowing still. There was also dirt crusting in the blood, which he knew wasn't a good thing. The scratches which went up his leg weren't crippling, or even likely to scar. They just hurt. He decided he'd been fortunate.

And yet, despite his assessment that he'd been fortunate, Mana had a flash of insight wherein the phrase "long-suffering" crossed his mind. He decided that it would apply perfectly to him in this moment. Less than when he'd actually been injured and less than when he realized he'd chosen the losing side, Mana felt he was suffering. Trusting an outsider even to examine something as precious to him as his wounded paw was enough to make him die just from the stress of it. And lions were so much larger and stronger than cheetahs, as a rule. If she took it into her mind to retaliate for his sharp words earlier...

He closed his eyes and looked away. No doubt she would interpret it as some kind of weakness or unwillingness to look at his injury or think about it - Ha! As if he could help thinking about it. Mana didn't care. Her standards were clearly very odd anyway. What sort of normal, proper creature behaved as she did and as she claimed her pride did? He looked away and closed his eyes because it was easier for him to bear his circumstances if he blocked out at least part of them. He could see that at some future date, when he felt safe - if he ever felt safe again - he would have to do some serious introspection.

Turning it to show her the underside hurt some, but not as much as he anticipated. That was good. With his eyes still closed and his face still averted he replied, "No. No thorns. I'm not that unobservant."

When Dormin applied pressure to the joint his lips curled back in an automatic snarl and he snatched his paw out of hers. He looked over his shoulder to make sure no one else was nearby to hear his outburst and then said sheepishly, "Sorry. It hurts. I'm glad it's not broken. You think."

He couldn't resist adding those last two words with a hint of humor. It helped him think about something besides the spirits-cursed pain.

Busy inspecting the paw, Dormin was relatively unaware of the torment going on in her cheetah friend's mind. She wasn't even looking at his face to see him turn away while grimacing. Poor guy, he shouldn't have expected that things would be the same outside the Mizimu!

She smickered at his comment on the thorns. "Heh, so I see. But you've neglected it clearly, and you didn't even clean it! If it gets infected, or is already, it's on your head, you know. I've heard tell of limbs rotting right off once infected. Hey!" She glared at him when he yanked the paw away. "Of course it hurts! Don't be a baby, just sit still." She slid closer again to regain her grasp on his paw.

"Now, like it or not, first things first, and that means cleaning it." Without leaving him time to protest she bent to lick at the wound, clearing the dirt from it with a few tongue swipes. "Sorry, that probably stung. Huh. Now I'm not a healer, but one of my siblings is. I can't fix you like he could, but I can give you some tips." She released his paw at last and sat back. "One, you're going to want to clean it more. If you get dirt like that in it again it might infect, or the wound could close over it and make it uncomfortable with grit in there. Two, you're going to want to take it easy. sure you like to run, but it's going to pull at any new skin you form in that area, and at the VERY least, it's going to hurt like hell."

"And lastly," She fixed him with a stiff sort of look. "Don't be so quick to distrust people. I don't know where you're from, but you know, not everyone out here wants to eat you. Shortcutting through a pride's land can save a lot of time." She cuffed him on the shoulder, almost in a friendly way. "You might wanna rest before moving on. I can sit watch."

"I was in a hurry," he said defensively. "And no one really believes that limbs can rot off."

At least he sincerely hoped limbs didn't really rot off, because he knew he wouldn't have too many chances in the future to take the time to care for the injury. There were risks involved in that kind of neglect, he knew, but he had already decided that if it came down to a choice between having one paw mangled and having his entire self mutilated, he'd take the former. Though he'd rather not have to contend with either possibility. Which is probably why he allowed her to grasp his paw once more and lick it briskly clean, and even resisted the urge to point out that he could've done that for himself.

"You're right about keeping it clean. I just didn't think about it, I suppose." Being servile wasn't exactly alien to Mananakbo. After all, he'd not exactly occupied a high-ranked position in the Mizimu, but it still didn't come easily to him. He was a proud creature and all this humility was a bit of a strain.

"I'll be more careful," he promised insincerely. He couldn't afford not to run, even if it meant it would be painful and slow the healing process. If it wasn't going to permanently damage him, he had to run. He had to put enough distance between himself and the Mizimu that they couldn't find him.

"But I'm not sure I can promise to be more trusting. It's an upbringing thing, and my experiences haven't really lent themselves well to trusting in people." Trusting in people was what had gotten him where he was now, after all. A thoroughly unenviable situation.

"I...don't know if I could sleep, even if I wanted to." He said this last part very softly, almost to himself. As he said it he looked far younger.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 20, 2010 12:53 pm

"Sure they don't believe that." She smirked at the cheetah. Maybe a bit of fear for the wound would do him some good. Plus he was pretty fun to pick on! "And of course I'm right. When you're running from something that's all you think about. Panic sets in...well, you're not in a good state to take care of yourself. That's why warriors should be taught not to panic, even when hurt in battle. As for this though, well it's not nearly as bad as having an eye clawed out, or your side torn open."

"As for your upbringing...well. That plays a part but you're you, right? And far as I can see, Mommy and Daddy aren't here helping me take care of you. Might as well make your own decisions and live or die by them, not what someone else's taught you to do. Caution's fine, but if you die because you're too proud to get help, that's just being an idiot. And shameful to boot."

She chuckled at his fears on sleeping. "I doubt anything could get past me. And if it did, you'd have woken up and be long gone by then right? It's a win-win situation for you, dummy, you should take it. Either you get rested and go your merry way, or you get partly rested and still get off scott free when you hear me tearing whatever's after you into itty bitty bite sized bits." She lifted a paw, and not so gently shoved him in the chest. "Now lay down."

Man she was feeling moody. why was she suddenly feeling protective of the little jerky cheetah? Hng. Maybe what that white lion the other day had said to her had more truth to it than she'd thought. ...Nah. She was a fighter, not a mommy.

"I'm not a warrior," he pointed out unnecessarily. There wasn't any reason for him to mention it except that he felt he had to make some sort of excuse for panicking. He hadn't applied that term to himself yet, but now that it had been said, he realized with a pang of shame that that's exactly what he did. No. He was definitely no warrior.

When Dormin mentioned shame, Mana couldn't help it. He began laughing hysterically. The hysteria was probably a result of all the tension that had been building inside him since...whenever it started building, but it chose to expel itself in the form of helpless hysterical laughter. Shame! Dormin's entire coat was green, and she thought pride was shameful! The rest of the world outside the pride was apparently so mixed up, they probably thought birds swam and fish flew.

"Gods and spirits," he gasped between peals of laughter. "No wonder your fur is green."

Eventually his laughter abated and he heard Dormin's offer of protection. It was completely ridiculous for someone like her to be a warrior, he thought to himself. Against one of the Mizimu, she'd be torn to bits before she even had a chance to wet herself. The spirits got what they wanted, almost always, and a green-pelted creature like Dormin wouldn't have a hope of stopping them.

"There's a third option," Mana couldn't help pointing out with a wry grin. "And that's that I slink away while my pursuers tear you into itty bitty bite-sized bits. They're pretty good at that when they want to be."

Despite his protestations, Mana once more found himself in a position of holding still and listening. Holding still and listening wasn't too difficult. In fact, it hurt a great deal less than anything else he could be doing. The only problem was that Mana couldn't stop imagining Mizimu hunters tracking him down, drawing nearer and nearer while he stopped here to chat with this strange, pushy lioness.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 20, 2010 1:38 pm

Okay, so maybe the wound was infected. For some reason the cheetah had burst into laughter. She eyed him, sniffing for any scent of disease or fever. He didn't SEEM ill though, more than being hurt, which puzzled her. "What has my fur being green got to do with anything? You've mentioned it a few times now. I'm green because my mother was green. It's not like I got sick and TURNED green. If my mother had been red, I would be red. I'm sure your parents were colors you have." It was like this guy had no idea how things worked in the world. She shook her head at him. "Maybe you got hit in the head too, you're sounding a little fevered."

She choked on a laugh when he proposed his third option. "Well you've just made my point then, right? So either way you'd do well to rest. Either I'll kill them or they'll kill me. You'll get away, so why not rest?" After a moment's pause, she reared back with a great paw and smacked him upside the head, knocking him out cold hopefully. "There. You'll run faster to make up for it later." Mentally she made a note to be on the watch for anyone suspicious around after. And to report that there might be some ruffians in the area, of course. Content that he'd thank her for the snooze when he woke, she settled down nearby to keep watch.

Mana, too, shook his head. How could she have no idea of the spirits and the cycles of rebirth that occurred with lions? Gods and spirits, she was a lion. That knowledge should be innate. But then, he'd already seen that she didn't understand how her coat marked her as a being of lower value whose spirit had disgraced itself in its former death. She was probably ignorant of spirits altogether, which was odd, but not impossible he supposed. It was certainly simpler than any other explanation he could come up with. The poor, ignorant lioness. She would never be reborn in an honorable color.

"I'm not fevered," he protested. "And I didn't get hit in the head."

If he'd any idea what was coming, he might not have chosen those words. In hindsight, he decided he had actually invited what came next by asserting that he'd not been hit in the head. However, for the immediate future the last thing to go through his mind wasn't at all ironic, but panicked instead. He'd been betrayed! She had been lulling him into a false sense of security, and how could he have expected anything different of a green lioness who hadn't even told him her name?

When he woke from his unconscious state Mana recalled at once the circumstances for how he'd ended up that way and climbed to his feet with a wince. He didn't look around to see if the green lioness was still there. She had betrayed him, knocked him out. He had no idea how long he'd been unconscious, but it was too long regardless. The hunters of the Mizimu would be after him, and closer now. Gods and spirits, he was a fool.

He took off at a lope that quickly became a full-out run. With any luck, he'd still have a chance if he ran through the night. So much for the idea of feeding himself. He'd wasted all the time he could afford to and more during that little interlude which had ended so badly. Now he could only run.
