Rags huffed to her self in pain and anguish as she worked her way back to her home; back to her pride. She could see the gray; off in the distance; gods it was so close and yet; so far away. She closed her eyes and smiled to herself. Home. She was going home.
And she was going home FAT! She frowned at that idea; surely the prince would tease her for it; as well as their Goblin god. But she didn’t care; she’d been asked by her king specifically to go out in search for new blood; and what better way to bring that to him than through cubs?
Too bad they were the reason why it was so difficult getting home. She’d had to pass through a canyon; through the desert; and now through the weird rock filled hills of this dead wasteland. She’d passed by very few animals at this point; and why would there be any other animals here? Out here was where other animals came to die; why else would the Goblin pride have hidden them selves away behind a dull and gray dead forest? Who went into a forest when they knew nothing but wicked things lived there? Only those that wanted to die.
Rags sighed to herself; hoping she didn’t find any of those here. She was normally one of the ones that helped patrol the outer lands even though she wasn’t a ‘hoggle’. She liked finding the animals that had given up; and bringing them back to her pride where they were wanted and welcome; for the most part. But she hadn’t been here in so long… How many had died in those woods since she’d left?
She closed her eyes as she continued on her way; her tail dragging along the ground as her stomach made it awkward to walk. She wondered if her king would be there waiting for her? She doubted it; he did after all have more important matters to attend to. Like keeping his young heir in line. She worried at her lower lip and looked up again as she got closer and closer to the forest. The last time she’d seen her king he’d been a bit sick with something or other… she hoped he was alright. Well of course he was alright! She reassured herself; he was the king; a mere cold he would be over in no time. Of course he would be much better by the time she made it back to his den to report to him what all had happened. She was certain he’d be amused at the male she’d had to mate with… And she hoped he’d be a little jealous as well. That was just wishful thinking of course; the king had never taken a queen. And with pride traditions like theirs; there really was no need to. Why should he even look at her with her strange pelt anyways?
She sighed and sat down for a moment; her ears were falling heavily and her whole body sagging. She worked at the small bag around her neck and pulled at it with her teeth; inside was water she’d captured for herself and she drank some from it sparingly. Not wanting to waste any of it should one of the hoggles not remembered to refill the water bag hidden away at the entrance to the maze before the pride.
It had been a long and strenuous trek; this had better been worth it. She heaved herself to all fours once more and started off again; it was mid day already; if she didn’t keep moving she wouldn’t make it to the entrance of the maze in time and that would have been no good. She needed the whole day to walk the labyrinth; she needed the sunlight to see which way she was going… she picked up her pace if only a little. Knowing that she was so close to home gave her a little bit more energy at least.
The energy burst quickly faded though as she was only a few yards away. ugh what a pain. She just wanted to be home; she just wanted to lay in her own den; talk to her own pride members. Fight with the prince and try and win the favor of her own king. Surely this would make him happy with her... bring even more favor upon her. Some had claimed she was infertile since she'd yet to produce babes for the pride. But maybe... just maybe; her king would look at her; and see how pregnant she was; and suddenly decide he'd like to have other off spring; his own flesh and blood off spring with her.
Rags smiled to herself; how she longed for that. For the king to look at her as more than just a close friend. He'd saved her after all. As cliche as it sounded; he had. He'd found her; bruised and broken; laying in the dead forest waiting for death as well. But he hadn't allowed that; he'd gotten a group of others to bring her through the maze; to help make sure she lived; he made sure lived. He'd made her feel wanted and feel as if she really did have a purpose in this world. And though he made her feel as if it was crafting bags; she knew it was really to only serve him.
She sighed wistfully to herself. It was then that she knew she needed to serve this lion. He was such a perfect king. Someone she'd go to the end of the world for. Just to find him something he'd requested. So when he'd asked her to go out and get new blood... how could she refuse him? He was the perfect male as well; handsome; large; the alpha of any pride to be sure; and still he was intelligent and friendly. And though he kept the pride mostly to itself; he had nothing but good intentions for them all; and they had prospered becuase of it.
She wondered briefly what the pride had been up to while she'd been gone. Who was pregnant; who was mated; who was feuding with who. She chuckled at the thought of it all; the prince was probably trying to woo another female again. Something she was certain the king would shoot down the moment he heard of it. He needed to focus on learning to be king after all.
Rags nodded her head slightly in agreement to that statement; he was a bit childish; despite the lack of others to play with... the prince picked it up from their goblin god she was sure. He was just as immature as a newborn cub. She rolled her eyes wondering how the king could put up with it so easily. What ever the reason; it didn't matter to her now. The trees were no longer one big clump of gray; no longer one long line of nothing. She could distinguish them from one another now; see the branches on them now; and as she got ever closer she could even see some of the markings on them from lions that had stopped to sharpen their claws.
She she came upon one she gingerly reached up and raked her nails through the wood; her ears perking up as she did so. God it felt good to be someplace familiar to you; someplace you knew so well. She liked that most about the pride. There were really no big surprises here; the pride was small enough that everyone knew everyone elses business. Nothing got by anyone. And you were never the last or the first to know anything here.
She smiled to herself. Looking forward to something for the first time in a very long time. She was going home; and that was a very; VERY good thought indeed.
She took in a big deep breath; drawing all the familiar scents and smiling widely to herself as she let it out; closing her eyes for a moment to really appreciate it all. Home. She was coming home.
