He was taking a short break from what he was currently working on, it was the difficult part where he was working on the smallest of details and it could him great headaches to be squinting all day long. Not to mention that even if Jing Lin himself could go for long periods of time without stepping outside it would appear that Bai Mei wasn't like that. The boy liked to get out and about, liked the warmth of the sun, and liked to breath in the fresh air. Its why they were where they were today. He decided that if they were going for a walk it would be a calm, peaceful one, like the one they'd taken to the temple some time ago.
The less people the better if you asked Jing Lin, it meant the world around him being calm and comfortable, it meant not pointing of fingers, and no whispers behind hands. There were days that he almost wised that he was a fox spirit because he was quite sure that if he were he'd have an easier time warding on people and their silly, unfounded fears. He gave a slight shake of his head then looked over to his son who was walking somewhat to his side and a little forward.
The boy had one hand outstretched, letting it run over the pretty flowers that were growing along the side of the path that they were taking toward a nice clearing within the woods. It was a place where the sun shown down on people, where the flowers bloomed, and where they would get some peace and quiet to just enjoys themselves or so said his father. He was prone to believing everything the man said so he was eager to get to the clearing already.

In the clearing they were heading to sat a pair of young people. A young man with dark hair sat quietly against a tree, painting with a simple set of oils. Beside him, running through the flowers was a child with long light hair and a lotus mark under one eye.
This littler one was presently singing in broken Chinese and making a crown of flowers to wear upon its hair, stopping mid-lyric when it noticed Bai Mei and Jing Lin approaching. Immediately she - for it behaved quite female, despite dressing more like a boy - dashed over to distract the newcomers from her "father".
"A greeting, great travellers!" she said with a sweeping bow, hopping up on her toes a bit to look at them. "Where do you be bound?"

Bai Mei turned his attention to the one who approached and gave a little smile, "Hello." He murmured, watching the way that she boy and hopped around, neat! This person seemed to be quite friendly and rather bouncy as well he thought to himself, "Bound?" He glanced over his shoulder to where Jing Lin was standing, curiously.
"He wants to know where we are going." Jing Lin filled in the definition of the word that had stumped his son.
"Oh, I see." He murmured then glanced over at the other person once more, "We are just out walking, to get fresh air. To much time inside working causes my Father to cough." He explained, something that caused Jing Lin clear his throat, not wanting for his son to worry anyone when his health wasn't at risk. It was just caused when his lung got filled with the dust left behind by his art.
"A nice walk and fresh air is more then enough to make me feel better." He said in a reassuring manner.

Gui pouted a bit when Jing Lin called it a 'he'. She was treated as a good little girl at home and her foreign appearance tended to be what led the rest of the family to accept her tomboyish dress. "I am a she." the child protested, ignoring the eyeroll Long gave as he packed his things up.
"So you're traveling to get fresh air. That is good! I have come to this place with the father of mine to relax." Her words were oddly formal but not very flowery, as if she was still learning the basic concepts of phrasing and hadn't gotten into either fancying her speech much or into slang.

Jing Lin look down at the girl and gave a slight flush, "My apologies." He said, giving a slight bow of his head. He'd not guessed that one very well, had he? Oops.
Bai Mei looked up at his father for a long moment before turning back to Gui, "You remind me of my friend Song Tzue, your look is strong like hers is." He said, giving a smile. He looked over to where Gui's father was before he smiled, "My father needs to rest as well. He has to much stress at home."
The jade smith flushed a bit more, patted his son on the head, and left him to play with with his new friend. He wandered, not to far though so he could keep an eye on them, so he could get a look at the area around them.

Gui's face brightened up again in a few moments. "It is all right! I forgive you!" she stated to the man before dancing around a bit.
"I do not know if I know Song Tzue. I am bad with names. Who is his or her family?" the young lotus inquired, cocking her head to the side and looking at Bai Mei for a bit.
When his supplies were cleaned up, Long stood, following after Jing Lin to give him a pleasant greeting. "Goodday, I hope we are not putting too much of a damper on your walk."

Bai Mei smiled, "He travels with a woman called Meilin." He told Gui, giving her a smile. She really was nice wasn't she? It seemed that on occasion he could have some good luck with meeting people that were nice... though just ask often one could run across not as nice people from what he'd found in his short life.
He lifted his hands up to fiddle with his own long hair, looking at the pretty marking that Gui had on his cheek. He couldn't help but to step very closer to her, looking it over, then gave a smile, "Oh! Wow! You have a mark like me!" He chirped, moving his hair so that he could reveal the marking that he had on the side of his neck, "That is so neat!"

The girl thought for a few moments, "I've heard that name! Father was to marry someone by that title! She's a girl from another family. But he says she was blessed by the gods somehow and he no longer has to." the lotus child said proudly, amazed she remembered any of that.
Looking down at it and then at Bai Mei's own marking, her eyes lit up, "Wow! We are the same!" she cheered, hugging him. Quite informal and maybe impolite in some situations, but Gui was a strange one.

Bai Mei's eyes got wide at that, "Wow! They were going to be married?" He murmured, looking thoughtful at that. He found himself glancing over toward his Father. He knew that before he'd been born that his Father was married, he'd seen the woman's clothing tucked away in an unused room in the house, but he had no idea what happened to her. He'd only ever asked about her once and the sad look in Jing Lin's eyes made him vow to never ask again as he didn't want to hurt the man.
Quickly he shoved such thoughts away and turned instead to looking at Gui once more and gave a jump of surprise when she was suddenly hugging him. It wasn't expected but at the same time he couldn't say he minded at all. The boy wrapped his arms around her and snuggled her close, "Its nice to meet someone else with this same mark, its a good sign." He said, his eyes sparkling with happiness.

THe girl nodded emphatically, not noticing her companion's brief drifting off of attention. "Yes, but he had never met her and didn't think she much wanted to marry him anyway. Their parents were going to make them." What a strange idea! Parents making you marry someone? But then how could you love them?
At his statements about the mark, she nodded, "Yes! It means the gods are very pleased! That is always good!"

The idea of parents decided for their kids who they were gonna marry was a strange idea, wasn't it? He couldn't say it was an idea he liked and he could only hope Jing Lin would never decide such thing for him. Bai Mei was much to young for that sort of thing after all or so he believed. His interests were for more innocent things at the moment, things like helping his father. Marriage was the last thing on his mind until today. Now that it was mentioned though it seemed to have come to forefront of his current thought process.
The Gods were pleased, that statement broke him away from his thoughts of marriage and if it were possible for him to get anymore excited over something that would be it. To think that this meeting was not only a good sign but it was something the Gods were smiling upon made Bai Mei quite excited, "Yes, its very good." He murmured before he gave Gui another squeeze before he took a step back from the girl with the pretty hair, "We should make the most of our time then, before our fathers wish to go on their separate paths once more." And before the two of them were forced to part ways as well.

The girl nodded emphatically at that, "Yes! Good idea! What should we do?" her words were still stiff and awkward in the language but the feeling was still there, "Do you want to play a game?"

He nodded his head rapidly, "A game sounds good!" He said, giving her a bright smile then crossed his arms over his chest, head tilting to one side, "What sort of game do we want to play?" He asked, looking thoughtful as he thought about the various things that they could place. Being able to play someone his own age, someone nice who didn't think badly of his family, it had him quite excited. Perhaps to excited since he couldn't for the lift of him think of a good game for them to play. It was enough to cause the slightest blush to appear on his cheeks.

Gui seemed to think hard for a while, not the best at this whole thinking bit. Instead, the girl gave up and merely tapped Bai Mei's arm, a bright grin on her features. "Got you!" she exclaimed before turning and dashing away into the trees. See if he could catch her now!
Long watched out of the corner of his eye as his daughter ran past, a wild grin on her features, "Either she's just done something horribly devilish, or they're playing tag." he commented.

Bai Mei's eyes went a bit wide as the girl tagged him before racing off. He turned to watch her go before he hurried to try to catch up with her. That was unexpected but it seemed like it would be a fun one! He gave a happy sound as he raced by the two men that were talking in an attempt to catch up with the girl who'd gotten a head start on him. He was determined to do good at the game despite the fact that he could be a bit of a klutz when he didn't concentrate on putting on food in front of the other.
Jing Lin watched as Gui ran by before turned to look for his son only to watch him run by as well, looking as though he were still in a good mood, "I am guessing its tag." He said, giving a smile. He seemed quite pleased to see that the children were having fun together and was even more pleased that Long seemed to have no problem talking with him despite the various rumors that went around about him in town.
