This is a Private Roleplay for

Aphismet and Rivener (Aphismet)
and
Vivi (Atmadja)

Time: Early morning
Place: Farmer's Market in Gambino
Weather: Clear skies, warm and wonderful.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:40 pm

The car ride's conversation had been rather one-sided, as most conversation with Rivener was lately. Aphismet tried to engage the Sigel in talk but Riv would only stare out the window petulantly, leaning his chin on a fist and replying with a vague "hn" once in a while. It was disheartening, but the white-haired chef convinced himself this was all for the best. Rivener needed to get some air, needed to be around people again, needed to feel the sunshine. What better place to do all this than at the Farmer's Market?

Aphismet made it a habit long ago: every weekend he'd go to the Market in the early morning and pick up things for the day's meals. Those were his days off from work, and he could cook whatever he wanted, not just the items off a menu. It was fun to see what caught his eye at the farmers' stalls, and then come up with something to concoct during the day. He had a whole family to feed now, and the weekend journeys were a joy. He truly hoped he could pass on some of this joy to Rivener.

The Sigel, for his part, wasn't very impressed with this whole thing. He was more of a night-creature, staying up late to feed on starlight and moonlight... Getting up this early left Riv cranky and sore. Add to that the fact that his broken wings were still bothering him, strapped against his back like a useless lump of bone and leather... The Scorpion wasn't keen on being seen like this, but Aphi had insisted.

The pair of men abandoned their car in a parking lot and made their way to the open-air Market, finding it already bustling with people. Riv winced already, just knowing that someone would bump into his sensitive wings in this crowd. It was BOUND to happen. He was not looking forward to this, not one little bit.

"Look around and tell me if you think anything looks particularly delicious, okay? Maybe we can come up with today's food ideas together!" Aphismet offered what he hoped was an encouraging smile, but it only came off as tentative.

Rivener sighed and nodded, shoving his hands in his pockets and braving the mob, moving forward into the throng.

Voices darted to and fro all around the pair as they entered into the rabble, conversations from haggled numbers to shared recipes mingling into one pleasant din. Healthy piles of produce lined the many stalls in a rather impressive array: great red mountains of apples, mounds of plump indigo blueberries, soldierly lines of zucchini. If inspiration was what a chef sought at the Gambino Farmer's Market, inspiration was what he would get.

"And 755 gold is your change. Thank you for coming!"

"Merci, merci~!!"

Vivi collected the paper bag of strawberries she had just purchased from a vendor and smiled brilliantly, peering all around her at the scene currently in place. Ah! Was there anything more exquisite than the morning sunlight casting such beautiful shadows off those mango? Or the pleasant color of the gorgeous watercress that lay in wait for her to purchase? Optimism, nothing but a fresh sort of optimism ran through her veins this morning, freeing her from the vague unpleasantness that had dogged her since... well, since she'd begun her attempts at soul-catching.

But this morning, there were no attempts at soul-catching, no animals to be scrutinized or dithered over. There was only produce, and the gorgeous morning light, and the pleasant noises of fellow food aficionados all around her.

And, of course, the somewhat unhappy-looking gentleman -- or, rather, half a gentleman -- that she narrowly missed walking into on her way to the aforementioned watercress.

"Ah, pardon!" the ex-acrobat apologized automatically, gracefully tiptoeing backwards out of the Raevan's way. How had she missed him? The bright green leaves of the watercress may have been lovely, but certainly not so outstanding as this pugnaciously charming vision in black and red. In any case, she certainly was not missing him now, peering up at him with apologetic attentiveness through heavy lashes.

Rivener tensed and flinched away from any slight touch to his person, having narrowly avoided bumping his wings more than once so far. This latest near-miss was accompanied by some foreign-language word that must be an apology, and Rivener spun to face this person- this woman- with a slight nervous frown. He carefully made sure he didn't back into anything as he turned, just leveling the girl a pair of ruby-red eyes.

She kept staring at him. Of course it didn't help that he in turn kept staring at her for some reason. She was pretty, with long dark hair and dark eyes... The sudden realization that she was somewhat similar to the one who'd left Rivener in this state made the Scorpion bristle, a look of disdain crossing his face along with a wince of pain; his wings tried to rustle and snap open threateningly, only meeting with bindings and stabs of agony. "Ow!-... What? What are you staring at me for?" The bristling was evident enough in his posture despite the lack of his usual wing-display. He squared his shoulders and loomed a little higher, frowning.

Aphismet had wandered off for a short moment, and of course that was all the time his confrontational Sigel needed to pick a fight with some hapless passerby... A dainty-looking woman at that. Aphi sighed and hurried back through the crowd, a bag of green beans under one arm. "R-Rivener! Rivener, stop that, what's going on? I-uh, I'm sorry, miss, he's just-... not a morning person." He smiled sheepishly, placing a hand on the Scorpion's arm just in case...

An amused voice in Vivi's head told her that it was long past time to look away politely and go about her business, but she found herself quite reluctant to tear her eyes away from this particular Raevan. First, she had actually never seen a Sigel before, and this Sigel was beyond intriguing, all masculine baubles and sharp, careless edges. And his coloring was in line with her own favorites, as evidenced by her scarlet dress and patterned silk headband. Still, devastating handsomeness aside, Vivi's sense of decorum triumphed, and as Aphismet arrived, she was a flurry of easy smiles and lilted apologies.

"Oh, no, you must not -- it was my fault entirely. I spied the watercress behind him and am afraid I was entranced! If he were a bus, I would have walked just the same. But in this case, I am afraid I may have inadvertently caused some pain?" Her gaze went from the white-haired man to his Raevan, a shade of concern in her lifted eyebrows.

This man, he must be the guardian! As Vivi's gaze went to the man, flurry of questions suddenly exploded in her mind (how did you when did you how was it that you), but she quashed them all into silence and focused on the present situation.

She offered the Sigel a cautious smile. "But, for the stare, I am afraid I cannot apologize. I fancy perhaps you have such an effect on many women." And she gave an airy laugh, trying to lift the tenseness of the mood.

This woman must have been psychic to know so easily how to diffuse Rivener's temper. Flattery was definitely the key with many Raevans, but the proud Scorpion foudn himself particularly placated by such praise today. He'd been self-conscious about his wings, but he was still handsome enough to earn stares? The frown lessened to a mildly smug look and Riv's stance returned to a careful neutral, crowding slightly closer to Aphismet simply to make sure no one else bumped into him.

"You didn't actually bump hard, so it didn't hurt,"
Riv answered rather magnanimously, pretty much forgiving this woman for the supposed slight. "...And yes, I suppose people do stare a lot. Usually because I have no legs, but sometimes because of my looks." He smirked, blatantly fishing for more compliments.

Aphismet rolled his eyes but relaxed visibly, now that a fight wasn't about to break out. He grinned at the french-accented woman, a bright and cheery expression. "You don't have to keep praising him, he's bound to get a big ego."

"Hey!"

"I'm Aphismet Delaran," the chef offered, extending his free hand for a shake. "This is Rivener. Always glad to meet a fellow Market-goer!"

"Only sometimes because of the looks, you say?" Vivi slanted an impish smile up at the dark-haired Raven, more than happy to continue her pleasant flattery. What with the downcast look the other had held before, Vivi felt as though he had a little extra coming to him. She knew how tough mornings might be for the afternoon-inclined. "I venture that this is modesty, not ego~.

Her smile became sunny as she took Amphismet's hand and shook. "I am Vivette LaCelle, called Vivi. A pleasure to meet you both. Are you here for pleasure or for business?" She gestured to their current scenery, where nearby patrons were expertly tapping melons and smelling bouquets of herbs.

There was a moment of mental hesitation as Vivi shifted her strawberry bag in her arms and snapped open her purse, but she quickly overcame it, extracting the heavy glass of her empty soul bottle to show the others. "Ah, also... I feel I can tell you, we are fellows in more ways than one!"

Rivener positively preened. She'd praised him even though Aphismet had tried to take the wind out of his sails, and so she earned herself a place in the Sigel's good graces. A self-satisfied smile made its home on Riv's face, the Scorpion holding himself up tall and emanating as much handsome presence as he could.

"Pleased to meet you, miss LaCelle." Aphismet shook her hand, grinning. It was a good day, starting out with making a new friend and perhaps even lifting Rivener's mood a little! "We are here for pleasure, discovering what our weekend menu is going to be. Although I often come here for business too-..."

Vivi's sudden change of topic took center stage then, Aphismet losing nearly all interest in fresh produce the moment that glass container was revealed. A soul bottle! This woman was going to be a Guardian? What were the odds! Lab 305 people just seemed to gravitate towards one another! The chef's face brightened into an excited smile and he carefully reached fingers out to touch the cool surface. "Oh, wonderful!!! It's empty still... Do you know what soul you will catch?"

Rivener hadn't really been paying attention, but the mention of catching souls drew the ruby gaze down. "Ah!" Riv inhaled sharply, leaning down to look at the object closer. He'd only seen a very limited number of soul bottles... One, perhaps two. One clawed finger tapped gently against the glass. This was what he'd come from, too...

"How exciting to meet another guardian and such an extraordinary Raevan in such a location, n'est pas? I must be very lucky today, indeed." Vivi laughed. As the scorpion's finger ticked against the glass, her hand extended, offering the bottle to him in case he wanted to further examine it. She did wonder about the Sigel -- whether he knew the circumstances of his birth, or his creator, or from what he was made. What would she tell her own Raevan when he or she was born? Would she tell him or her about the way she'd agonized over this ridiculous soul capturing scenario? Or how his or her soul was chosen, or taken?

... if she could ever take one. If her Raevan ever would be born.

But now was not the time for that! Her eyes turned up to Aphismet as he spoke, and she made a low pondering noise in response to the question he'd asked. This man seemed more than capable, more than able to take care of his own Raevan, but clearly that task had not been easy. Somewhere in the back of her head, Vivi wondered just what his story was. The Lab, how did they choose their people?

"I am still in the process of finding the correct soul. It is a terribly difficult thing, this selection," the baker said with a sigh, lifting her shoulders into a shrug and flashing a helpless grin. "But, it shall solve itself, I am sure! Fate seems to have supplied quite optimally for everyone."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 13, 2010 8:21 pm

Rivener took the offered bottle like one might hold a baby, cradling it carefully even though it had yet to hold an actual soul. It was the same to him, really. This bottle would disappear and become part of the new Raevan. He tilted his head at it, fingers carefully drifting across the fabric half-draping one side... did this fabric matter, he wondered? The other bottle he'd seen had a different color... Did the bottles have colors because they were pre-set, like they'd only accept one kind of soul? Or was Dr Kyou somewhat psychic, able to know what color he'd end up needing?

It was fascinating. Rivener suddenly wanted to watch this Raevan grow completely, from bottle to Sigel, so he could see how it began, how it grew... A small smile tugged at his lips. It wasn't his place, he knew, but maybe if he asked nicely he might get to see?

Aphismet chuckled at Vivi's admission that choosing a soul was difficult. Indeed, it might have been... Had Aphi known what he was doing back in the day, he might not even have picked a scorpion soul. "Fate has supplied indeed, hah! I misunderstood the instructions when I received the bottle, and thought it would "give new life" to an old friend of mine... So I accidentally captured its soul and he became Rivener." The chef shrugged. "For the best though, like you said! It solved itself. And really you needn't wrack your brain. Eventually you'll find your opportunity, I'm sure! I'm sorry if I'm being overly curious, but what kind of Essence did you receive from the Lab?"

"A happy misunderstanding, it seems!" Vivi said with a little chortle, her eyes crinkling at the corner with gladness as her gaze swept over Rivener, amazed at the softness she saw in the scorpion's expression while he held the bottle. It seemed many people in the lab reached their souls by some serendipity! Perhaps, after all, she need not worry herself quite as much as she had been. "I keep saying to myself that such a thing will happen to me, but who knows? All I can do is wait and see, I suppose."

"Ah, I could tell you -- but I can do better. If you would like to see... " she continued in a musing tone, unzipping an inner compartment in her purse as she spoke. From within, she slowly pulled out a black lacquered cigar holder: a rather elegant, masculine thing, its outside shell looking like dark swirled marble. She undid its top and slowly, carefully, slid out her fel essence vial onto her palm, the soft colored light glimmering from inside the glass. The little fragments of morning looked as fresh and easy as always, and that faint, refreshed feeling of calmness slid sweetly across Vivi's being. "I bring it with me... perhaps it is silly, but I hope that somehow it will call to the soul it desires! It is called the Broken Dawn. You may hold it, if you like? It gives a rather pleasant feeling, I believe."
PostPosted: Wed Apr 14, 2010 6:52 pm

Aphismet had figured as much. If she went around with the bottle, it was only natural to assume she'd also have the Essence, simply in case something happened and she needed to drop them both off at the Lab... But he hadn't expected Vivi to so openly offer to show him the vial instead of just explaining it. A small thrilled tremor went through him, and the chef's grin broadened happily. "I don't think it's silly at all! ...Broken Dawn, hunh? It's so pretty!"

With great reverence Aphi took the vial, lifting it up to the light. It DID make a certain kind of calm wash over him, but that might be his own mind playing tricks on him? Rivener's Night Rock had never given off any kind of vibe, back in the day... "It really is very VERY pretty."

Rivener glanced over as well, inching closer to peer into the glass tube. So whatever was in the bottle would combine with this vial, and the result would be another Raevan. Again, one long-clawed finger raised to gently tink against the smooth surface, the small impact serving to jostle the fragments inside just the tiniest bit. Rivener smiled.

"Hey, do you think I could see it when it's born? Your Raevan, I mean. I'm curious to see what it'll turn out being. And I want to know what Soul you've caught too, when you do catch it. And how does it work anyway? You just leave a bottle open and it catches the closest thing?"

"Rivener, don't just demand things!"

"I"m not demanding," the Sigel corrected with a barely-tolerant sigh and a glare towards his Guardian. "I'm asking."

"Merci, merci~ I think it is quite lovely, as well! " Vivi said with modest delight as the chef complimented her fel essence. She hadn't had the essence for long -- and she hoped not to have it in that vial for much longer, either -- but she did feel quite proud of it, looking into the faint, blushing light that it radiated. "I often find myself wondering what other treasures such as these this lab must be in possession of!"

She turned to Rivener, eyebrows raised in interest, as the Raevan began to speak, and she felt well pleased to see the smile breaking across his face.

"I assure you that I would be quite delighted to share this Raevan's progress with you! When born, he or she shall be quite in need of a friend. I can only hope that it would not impose too much! She then paused, wondering if there would be any harm in explaining the soul bottle's working to the Sigel. It felt a little strange, but she supposed there was no reason why it should be -- for Raevans, this was just the necessary process of birth, after all. "I am taken to believe it is something like a magnet? It will catch, I am told, only what is in the same coloring as that cloth. If a creature of the correct coloring comes near it for a time period while it is open, their soul will go to it, and be given the opportunity to be reborn as a Raevan. When I ... eventually find the correct soul, I will be more than happy to share its origins with you!"

Vivi indicated the fel essence demurely, adding: "... would it be... too improper to ask from what you were born?"
PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2010 8:09 pm

Aphismet laughed and nodded at Vivi's ponderings. "I wonder, too! Who knows what other Essences the doctor's hiding away... And he comes up with the WEIRDEST things sometimes." Thoughts flew back to the menagerie of pets at the Delaran house, many of which could directly be attributed to Dr Kyou's odd experiments.

Rivener was glad Aphi seemed to have let go of the whole don't ask for anything incident. The chef seemed happy and chatty again, not even minding as Vivi turned to Rivener and assured him that he'd be welcome to know the Raevan's progress. "It wouldn't be an imposition at all! I'm curious, after all." He'd take pictures, he'd keep a binder about it, documenting its life as much as Rivener could know about! Maybe in so doing, watching another Raevan instead of himself, Riv might discover some sort of secret about their kind... If there even WAS a secret to begin with. In all likelihood Kyou just built them on a whim.

And of course, it was only fair for Rivener to answer Vivette's questions when she posed them. He gave back the soul bottle as Aphismet gave the Essence vial, smiling. "It's not improper, it's not like it's a secret or anything... Although to some of us it is. Weird. Why'd you always just tell me, anyway?" the Scorpion asked, turning to his guardian with a slight frown.

Aphismet shrugged. "If a kid asked me where babies came from, wouldn't it be alright to tell him? You asked, so I told you."

The Sigel digested this for only a second before shrugging a shoulder the same way Aphi had. "Anyway, I was made from a Scorpion and a piece of the night sky called Nocturne Rock. So Aphi here tells me."

"It was my pet Scorpion!" Aphi declared with a snicker. "Though Riv's a lot less friendly than my pet was."

"I am NOT anyone's pet!" The Scorpion bristled, wincing as his wings gave a reflexive twitch in their bandages.

"The... weirdest things?" Vivi repeated curiously, noting Aphismet's emphasis on the word 'weird'. Were there other creatures like the Raevans being worked on inside Dr. Kyou's lab? Other things he wasn't as ready to share with the world? And who was this Dr. Kyou? The image of the Wizard of Oz in all his emerald glory leapt readily into the acrobat's brain.

She watched the two banter with a faint smile; Aphismet's frank honesty with Rivener was both refreshing and sweet. All of the people she had hitherto met in the lab all seemed to show the same quality of great parental devotion toward their Raevans.

"A piece of night sky ... how beautiful it sounds! And a friendly scorpion? Both things one does not often get a chance to see in this world. Tell me... how does one know if their scorpion is a friendly one? " laughed the Frenchwoman, looking at Aphismet. A pet scorpion? She would never, not in ten million years, have pegged Aphismet as the sort who had a pet scorpion, and that made her like him all the more. She then turned her gaze to the Sigel. "But do not worry, Rivener. I do not think anyone could mistake you for a pet. "

A rock made of the night sky, and the broken shards of morning. Would they get along? Vivi wondered. Would it have any effect, the origin of the fel essences on their personalities? Light and dark were opposites, of course, but both would be born of the sky. Would that make them kindred? Or opposites? Oh, who knew what mattered, with this sort of thing. But still, looking at Aphismet and Rivener, with their obvious bond and history, she certainly hoped that the unborn Raevan would indeed get along with the Sigel.
