Hello everyone, TyllMarvel here. Due to the recent surge in discussion about Christian beliefs, I felt it would be prudent to start a thread answering some of the questions some of you might have.
First a little information about myself. I am 21 and have been a Christian as long as I can remember. I have not been to church in years, because I find many people there to be very hypocritical. I do not belong to any sect or particular school of thought about my beliefs. As I will probably say a lot here, the words may have been given to us by god, but the bible was written by man. So I believe that there is room for interpretation there.
Disclaimer (because I'm that kind of guy): While I'm a Christian, I'm not the best source of all things Christian. So there may be some questions to which I have no answers. That's the way it goes sometimes, but I will attempt to answer your questions as best I can. I'm not here to convert anyone, and I'm not going to be swayed from my religion any time soon. I'm pretty open to any questions, so if you have anything to ask feel free to do so. Feel free to ask no matter how silly the question might seem. Just try to keep it civil in here. I know how heated people can get when discussing personal beliefs.
Well, it's open. Bring on the questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability.

Well, many would probably consider me a bad Christian. I don't go to church, I swear, and cavort with sinners. I don't like the idea of there being different types of Christians. It should be one book, and a better one at that. The separation creates hatred between us, and that's not right for a religion that preaches so much love to practice so much hatred. Plus there are good messages to come out of every different interpretation of the bible, so restricting one's self to just one is rather limiting of how much of the Bible one can truly understand. In a rather round-a-bout way of saying it, I am my own type of Christian. I'm not sure whether or not I share my beliefs with any particular group of Christians. So for now I am a Christian of my own belief.

I really don't know what to ask you. I've never met a christian before that's actually upfront about being "bad". it's incredibly appreciated. ^__^
alright, uh.....
Do you celebrate Christmas and Easter for their religious value?

My mom's Christian, so I usually go to her for my Christian questions. But she hasn't gone to church in a very long time. She still considers herself Christian because she still believes.
My one question I asked her, that she couldn't answer.. In the bible, it covers Jesus's life from 0-12 y.o., then skips to 30. What happened to in between? Possibly just some of the chapters that were tossed aside when the bible was being put together that the people didn't like? (like the rumor of his Mary's chapter being discarded)

Rizu-Sensei well said, tyll. =[ wink I really don't know what to ask you. I've never met a christian before that's actually upfront about being "bad". it's incredibly appreciated. ^__^ alright, uh..... Do you celebrate Christmas and Easter for their religious value? Yes in fact I do. To head off the next question that naturally ties into this, Christmas may or may not be the actual day of Christ's birth. It's just the day we choose to celebrate it and honor it. Same as if I were to celebrate the day of my birth in July, when in reality it resides in a much different month. kage no neko My mom's Christian, so I usually go to her for my Christian questions. But she hasn't gone to church in a very long time. She still considers herself Christian because she still believes. My one question I asked her, that she couldn't answer.. Possibly just some of the chapters that were tossed aside when the bible was being put together that the people didn't like? (like the rumor of his Mary's chapter being discarded) I have no idea what happened in between. It is highly likely that it happened that way, along with many other left off parts, or edited parts. Also it's possible that nothing happened in his life between the ages of 12 and 30. It could've just been very boring, but I doubt that's the case. Also since his life was recorded by scribes and people who were actually literate, it's highly likely that he could have been wandering the country side learning and teaching, with no one to record his adventures. And he came back to the civilized world to continue his teachings, because that's where he was needed. All we really have at this point is speculation.

Rizu-Sensei how do you feel about the resentment generated towards members of your religion? It makes me sad for two reasons. Firstly, some of it is deserved. There are a lot of hypocritical members, who are Christian only in name. And secondly some of the people spreading the resentment have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, or hold the actions of a small amount of us as what is true about all of us. It's still prejudice, no matter who it's against.

I'm am happy for the freedom of religion in this country. It, along with many other things, helps keep diversity everywhere. Although there is hatred in that, there will also be understanding for those who keep an open mind.

I used to go to Christian church services with my friend Jessica. This was a condition thought up by her parents. If I wanted to spend the night at her house, then I'd have to go to church with them the next morning. I did, but only because I liked Jessica. The services were frightening, to say the least. It looked as if all the parishioners had just taken shrooms. No joke. I understand that not all Christian gatherings are like this, but I just couldn't handle the dancing, jumping, shouting, and "speaking in tongues." I was raised Catholic, so I'm used to quiet prayer, and softly sung hymns. This "new age--holy roller" Christianity is definitely meant for extroverted individuals (not me). Just sharing wink

i wish the people in parish took shrooms. rofl they're mostly just old folk, so services are boring when i'm forced to go. i've only been to a couple catholic services, and both times i ended up being the only one sitting on the pew while everyone else was kneeling on the little bench-thingy. they kept giving me funny looks....

Further proof that 98% of Americans are named Jessica.

Boyfriend has a question I don't quite know the answer to. Some groups of Christians, the girls only wear skirts. Is there a reasoning for this? I knew a girl who did that, but I don't remember her answer for it.
