Lala lounged in a chair by an open window in an empty, little used room as Perditith sniffed about curiously. The window was open and a slightly chill breeze wafted in, blowing back the young woman's long hair from her face. She had her long locks bound back in twin braids today, but allowed the shorter strands to float about her narrow freckled face rather then pushing them back with a scarf like she normally would.
'Is it time yet, mine? This room is very boring.' Perditith asked plaintively as she came over and pushed her head into her rider's lap and huffed.
The woman rolled her eyes but stroked the large, soft head fondly all the same "Almost time, you remember to be gentle, I won't have you knocking any kids over, got it?" Lala said, allowing a little sterness into her voice to remind her dragon of the lecture she had given the green earlier.
Tanda, one of the creche workers, had approached her the day before and asked her if she wouldn't mind letting the children of the creche to get a look at a hatchling dragon, before she grew so big that she'd seem more threatening to such small children. Having worked with children quite a lot herself while growing up in a trading caravan, Lala had agreed readily. She couldn't see any harm so long as her dragon could remember that children were far less sturdy on their feet than adults. So, here she was, sitting in the room Tanda had asked her to meet them in, waiting for the fast approaching time when she would see just how well her dragon could control herself.
'I wouldn't!' Perditith countered, almost sounding offended before adding '...what's a kid?'
Lala sighed "kid is just another word for child. Little people...like human hatchlings."
'Oh right! I have seen some! They seem small and squishy.'
"I...guess they are...no testin that though please. Be gentle, no jumping-"
'-no prancing, no running, hopping, bopping, fopping or otherwise. I got itmine.'
"Good. Just make sure you don't forget." Lala thought for a moment, one eyebrow arched as she asked "What's fopping?"
'...I don't know.'

Tanda led a small flock of children under ten turns through the corridors of High Reaches Weyr. The children trailed behind her, each one holding the hands of two others so that they formed a long chain. Tanda held the hand of the youngest, a boy just barely five turns, who clung to her in abject terror. He was the son of two miners and had almost no occasion to see dragons. He was convinced that he would be eaten, in spite of Tanda's reassurances. The rest of the group talked in hushed voices about how excited they were.
"All right," Tanda said, stopping the group before they reached the chamber she'd asked Lala to bring Perditith to. "Let's go over the rules one more time."
"Ask before touching," a girl of seven said. "And touch gently, like with Raya and Shibra."
"Mind your manners," another girl chimed in. She was the oldest, just a few months shy of ten turns.
"Use indoor voices," a boy of six added. "And don't all talk at once."
That was more or less the most important of the rules. Tanda might've asked Rath if he'd mind letting her introduce some of her charges to a dragon with him, but A'ram had been in a foul temper and in no mood to tolerate small children. Also, Rath was a full-grown brown, and significantly larger than the average child. For children who had never been near a dragon, it would be better for their first experiences to be with a smaller specimen. Asking one of the newly Impressed had been a stroke of inspiration. There was no dragon smaller than a young green.
"Right. And remember that Perditith may not speak directly to you, and so you must also pay attention to Lala, yes?"
"Yes," her five students chimed. She hadn't wanted to overwhelm the dragon with too many visitors all at once, since all the children would be excited and young dragons could be very empathic.
With that, she led them into the room, knocking first as a warning. The children filed in and glued themselves to the wall farthest from the weyrlings, staring wide-eyed at the pair. They seemed a bit over-awed. Tanda remembered the hatching and how spirited and friendly this spotted green had been and grinned.
"Hello, Weyrling Lala, Perditith. Thank you for agreeing to meet some of my charges. They seem a little intimidated at the moment, so would you mind maybe telling them about how you Impressed?"

Lala pulled away from the wall as a knock sounded at the door, and Perditith swung around to face the door excitedly. "Remember to play gently." Lala reminded her lifemate one last time as the door swung open and Tanda walked in with her young charges.
"Afternoon." She said, taking a step away from the wall and smiling at all the wide eyed visitors. She nodded to Tanda and went to crouch down next to Perditith, who was shifting slightly in excitement. "This here is Perditith, and I'm Lauretia, but you can call me Lala." She said in her warm, slightly accented voice "I impressed her at the last hatching, so she's still young, but real friendly." Lala said with a fond smile for hers, who in turn turned on large blue eye towards her and popped her jaw in a draconic smile.
"I was out on the sands, thinking I was the last one out there she'd pick, but sure enough, she came runnin right up and nearly knocked me right over by duckin' between my legs." she explained with a grin at the memory "When she first spoke to me, it was like a whole 'nother world just opened up inside my head, and there she was."
'I remember that!' Perditith said to hers, happiness coloring her mental voice 'That was fun. Do you think the little ones like fun? Do they want to play a game?' she asked eagerly.
'We'll save the games for later, sweetheart. Most've these kids have probably never been this close to a dragon. Let 'em get used to you first.' she replied mentally before turning her eyes to the children.
"Would anyone like to touch her?" she asked with a smile.

The children listened to Lala tell her story. They were young enough to be charmed by a youthful face and pleasant smile, and not a single one of them could long resist the idea of a friendly, playful dragon. Except the boy clinging to Tanda's hand. When Lala invited the children to touch the dragon he turned and buried his face in Tanda's skirts. Tanda let him do it for now, hoping that the sound of the other children enjoying themselves would draw him out, and that she wouldn't have to take any more direct action.
The fifth member of the group of children was a boy barely nine turns old. He brushed fluffy brown hair out of his eyes and squared his chest resolutely when Lala asked if anyone would like to touch Perditith. The other children hung back, hiding intimidation behind a veneer of good manners, but he strode forward a few steps, only hesitating briefly to glance at Tanda to make sure it was really okay. When she nodded he continued.
"I'd like to, if she won't mind. I've never touched a dragon before." He said this shyly, but then seemed to realize that all the other children were watching him to see what would happen. So he added with more bravado, "Someday I'm going to ride a bronze, so I should start practicing now."
Tanda smiled at Lala over his head, hoping to convey that he was harmless and didn't mean any actual offense. He hadn't been raised in the Weyr, but had come here with a crafter parent, and wasn't adjusting all that well to Weyr life. Nonetheless, he wasn't a bad young man. Just displaced. Her attention being mostly on Lala, Tanda almost missed her six-turn-old charge beginning to run forward so that he could be the first to touch a dragon, now that it was apparently all right.
"Wait," she said very quietly, catching him by the collar. "One at a time, remember?"
Meanwhile, the crafter's son finally reached the spotted green and improvised, bowing to her like he was a candidate going onto the sands before a gold. Tanda was more amused than surprised. Maybe he'd been talking to some of the other weyrbrats who had been present for hatchings or were near to being allowed to become candidates. Using two fingers, like he was petting Tanda's striped green firelizard, he petted Perditith's shoulder, his eyes growing wide at how her hide felt.
"She's warm!" he exclaimed, letting his palm press flat against her. A grin lit his face as he turned around and waved to the others. For him this was a moment of triumph. He had been first and fearless.
"I wanna touch now!" the younger boy Tanda had stopped exclaimed, pulling free of her grip and trundling forward on short but sturdy legs. He was stopped before he reached the spotted green by the boy who was already there, protesting that it was still his turn. Tanda cleared her throat pointedly and the older boy relinquished his position sullenly taking a few steps back toward the group.

Lala shared a smile with Tanda over the first volunteer's head. She took no offense to his claims, it was cute, really. Boys always did like to boast, she knew from experience.
"Go ahead." she told the boy as he laid a gentle hand on Perditith, who let out a little thrum of enjoyment from all the attention she was getting from the children. He was reluctant to give up his place to the younger child, but with Tanda's deft handling, he was talked into stepping aside to allow the others a chance.
"Don't worry, everyone will get their turn." Lala assured the children, smiling at the first boy as he did the responsible thing and took a step back.
Perditith snuffled curiously at the new little boy's hair, stirring the brown strands with her hot breath 'These little people are noisy.' Perditith remarked as she turned her head this way and that, as curious about the little boy as the boy was about her.
'Does the noise bother you?' Lala asked hers worriedly.
'No, I like it. The little people are funny. And they like me!'
Lala gave Perditith a pat and then smiled at the little boy "Here, try touching her shoulder." She said, gesturing for the boy to place his hand on the dragonet's shoulder. She would have let him scratch the dragon's eye ridge, but small children were never well known for their motor skills, and she didn't want her green to get poked in the eye. Perhaps some of the older children could though when they were more comfortable around her's.

Degan, the younger boy, did as Lala suggested, though probably not quite what she'd intended. He rubbed Perditith's shoulder vigorously. His actions didn't concern Tanda much, since she knew from a lot of experience that dragons weren't really all that fragile, even when they were young. They had delicate parts, sure, but a dragon's shoulders hardly fell under that category. Minrim, the younger girl, did not have Tanda's confidence, however, and barely muffled her protest at Degan's careless handling of the young dragon.
"Not like that!" she mumbled, her horror that the dragonet might be injured helping her to overcome her shyness. "Like it's Raya or Shibra, remember!"
She took several steps forward quickly, to forestall any potential disaster. Degan looked at her over his shoulder and said, "But Prettith doesn't mind. Does she?" He directed that last question at Lala, looking suddenly wide-eyed and afraid that maybe he was wrong.
Standing off to the side, Shalan rolled his eyes. Clearly he had expected no more from Degan. Tanda caught his eyes and gave him a warning look. Shalan rolled his eyes at that, too, but he returned to where Ulya, the older girl, hung back. He was whispering, and so Tanda couldn't quite make out what he said, but Ulya's expression cleared, and Tanda was pleased.
"Can she fly?" Degan asked, patting Perditith's shoulder absently while Minim watched, anxiously awaiting her own turn.

"Don't worry, she's fine." Lala said in an amused tone as the boy looked up at her worriedly from his vigorous rubbing of her bonded's hide. The tall woman nodded encouragingly to the little girl who had come forward and Perditith turned her spotted head so that she could get a better look at her with one of her large blue-green eyes that whirled quickly with happiness and excitement.
When another question was directed at her, Lala shook her head in the negative "No, not yet, her wings-" here she laid a gentle hand on one of Perditiths wings and had her extend it to full size so that the children could see it clearly "aren't strong enough yet. the bones and muscles aren't fully formed since she is still growing. That and she doesn't have the muscles to manage it yet." she explained, gesturing to the 'arm' of the wing "See, dragon wings are just like arms, they even have fingers" Lala said, pointing out how the ribs of the wings were similar to their own fingers "The big difference is that their are webbed. Just like your arms though," she remarked, looking at the children's own small arms "her's aren't done growing yet, so they can't carry as much as an adults."
Perditith crooned at hers 'I will one day though, and then we shall go adventuring! It will be fun!'
Lala smiled, hoping that this would, indeed, be true.

Minrim didn't come any closer, but she stretched her arms to the utmost so that she could just touch Perditith's shoulders with her fingertips. Meanwhile she stared in fascination at the dragon's extended wing, watching as Lala manipulated the appendage to show how it went together and worked. The other children were equally fascinated.
"Can I touch?" Degan asked, referring to the membrane. He addressed the concerned girl beside him when he said, "I'll be very careful, like I am with Tanda's 'lizards, Min."
Tanda leaned against the wall. Pirdis, the boy who was convinced he'd be eaten, had his head turned toward the dragon and was watching them from between his fingers, but he still showed no signs of interest in touching her or going any nearer. You couldn't win them all, Tanda supposed. Off to her right Shalan was still working on convincing Ulya to come closer, but the older girl was reluctant.
"Degan, let Min have a real turn," Tanda said, guessing the child wouldn't relinquish his position for anything less than an authoritative command at this point. "Ulya, why don't you go with Min so that she's less nervous?"
Ulya shot Tanda a look of pure terror, but she stepped forward and joined the younger girl, who also seemed more or less petrified. By giving her a responsibility, Tanda had forced Ulya to do what she probably wouldn't have done without that little push, no matter how hard Shalan tried.
"Lala," Shalan asked, "How did she know you were the right one?"
