I can sort of echo recommendations of the manga of Lucky Star, with the caveat that the official English translation... is... often really odd. I can't explain it well. It seems more poetic than understandable...? And I like the anime, but the subtitles come basically straight from the manga when they're adapting a scene from it. I like the dub translation better. (And if you get the DVDs, don't forget to watch The Adventures of Minoru Shiraishi! biggrin )

I've only watched the first episode of Haruhi so far.

I'll say before I start that none of the ones I'm recommending have real robots (transforming, combining, or whatever), magical girls, real vampires, aliens, tentacles... and since I've already mentioned Lucky Star, I'll say that none of the below have ghosts. (Lucky Star has one.) Also, they're all cute, funny, and sweet.

Yotsuba&! - Rated: All - Mangaka: Kiyohiko Azuma - It's a series about an energetic 5-year-old and her father who move into a new neighborhood, and her experiences with new things. But because we're watching this li'l genki girl discover them, it comes alive, at least I think so.

The first 5 volumes were originally published by ADV Manga, but Yen Press picked up the series and translated them their own way. I have the first 8 volumes, and the 9th is set to ship in December.

Ichigo Mashimaro - Rated: 13+ - Mangaka: Barasui - This series is about a 16-year-old (20 in the anime, which I don't have) girl, her 12-year-old sister, their 12-year-old neighbor girl, and their 11-year-old friends (Although one of the 11-year-olds isn't in it until vol. 2). It has been described as "cute girls do cute things in cute ways". Little bit of a caution, though: if you're a male, living somewhere where people are paranoid about child molestation, then maybe consider not getting into this series. If it's found by the wrong people, well... it's likely to be evidence in favor of their false assumptions. Girls, you should probably be okay getting into it.

It's published by Tokyopop. I have 5 volumes and am waiting for the 6th to be available.

Azumanga Daioh - Rated: 13+ (Manga) TV-PG (Anime) - Mangaka: Kiyohiko Azuma - This series follows 5 girls through their 3 years of high school, and picks up a 6th in the second year. (We also watch a couple of the teachers.) The humor comes from their personalities and how they react to what happens. The anime can also be pretty contemplative, and doesn't necessarily break the mood of the scene for a joke.

The manga volumes were originally published by ADV Manga, then put into an Omnibus by Paw Prints. I don't know about the version with Supplementary Lessons, though. The Classs Album version of the anime was put out by ADV.
