So next week it's my school's leadership training for next season's marching band. I'm super nervous because this is my first year applying for leadership and I have no idea what to expect at the camp. I'm trying out for assistant pit section leader because there's this guy older than me who is probably going to be section leader. Oh and even though I called it leadership my school is changing the name to Role Model Team, but I, myself, call it role modelship. XD
So the question is are you on leadership or applying for it next year? 3nodding

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance...
Our band is so small [roughly 65] that we don't get a choice. Seniority rules over all.
... In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.

Our band is only about 10 people larger then yours, and we still get a chopice. this past marching season, a sophomore was flute section leader over the senior.

Oh my school has a huge band we've had over 280 members in the past, but it has lost a few members because of other high schools that have recently been built

Your leadership's set up a bit different than ours. We usually have two Drum Majors, then a section leader for each section. None of this "captain" business! xd
I'm trying out for drum major sometime, though...whenever the try outs are.

I'm trying out for drum major sometime, though...whenever the try outs are. That's cool, we have four drum majors at mine. I think it's interesting to see how leadership is set up at other bands because there is no wrong way smile Does anyone want me to change the poll to whether you get to apply for leadership or not since the positions at my band are different?

Ours is like Terras.Though amount of dms depends on how many people try out and actually do well. If one person is good enough, hen that person will be the only dm, if three people are good enough, all three of them will be dm

I was flute section leader this year, but next year I might switch to tuba for marching, since we'll only have two actual tuba PLAYERS next year (a freshman and a senior), and I can get lessons for free, but that means I won't get a section leader spot. sad
I'm still gonna try to go to a USA Band Leadership camp over the summer though! :] And I'm kinda hoping someone will nominate me for band president (as I'd actually attempt to hold meetings, which our lovely president hasn't, ha).
As for the leadership positions, we have a head drum major, two assistant drum majors, two section leaders per section for large sections (flutes, clarinets, trumpets...) and one SL for each small section (mellophones, tubas...). We also have a band council with one representative from each class.

My high school band has: a drum captain, a horn captain, a pit captian, a flute section leader, a saxophone section leader (over ALL the saxs), a clarinet section leader, a low brass section leader, a trumpet section leader (who usually ends up being the horn captain), colorguard captain (one for flag, one for saber, and one for rifle), usually one drum major and an assistant drum major, and then we have the band senate. The senate is the section leaders and captians along with the librarian, president, uniform managers, equiptment managers, and the band senate secretary.
Yeah we have a pretty big senate even though there is usually only 60-70 people in our band.

I want to be drum major of our pretty small band, but sadly, my band director isn't fond of me and I feel like I constantly disappoint her. There was hope at one point, but the chance of becoming drum major is becoming slimmer and slimmer each day. Every time she screams at me, I make more mistakes, and she keeps screaming at me. I think our drum captain will have also have to be drum major next year.. sad

Unfortantly I can't be any leadership. Except drum major. You can try out for drum major sophmore year, but section leader and everything else senior year.
Although the current section leader and the current sophmore person, think that in my junior year I'm going ot be the section leader..... strange how the one that could possibly be section leader says that I'll be section leader.... yay junior year ^^
anyways.....this year our band was pretty big about 87 people as opposed to the usual 60 something people it usually has. but still not very much leadership chances.

we have 2 types of leaders: section leaders and band council. band council is higher up than SLs, and they used to have positions, but not anymore. just president...and everyone else. plus the drum major. including at least one guard. theres a section leader for each section (marching section. theres no bassoon SL or anything.) plus guard captains. there used to be 3: flag, rifle, and ID/sabre. then we (the guard) got super tiny and we went down to captain and assistant captain. that was how it was announced anyways. by the end of fall marching it was more like co-captains. that was last year. this year is the same, with me as the assistant-turned-co-captain. its somewhere in between assistant and co- though. she's still head captain, but our coach keeps saying i'm flag captain... there was no one else left to be captain, so i didnt have much choice unless i wanted to be a douche...i didn't think i was a leader. then i got better, but all the ones who were in guard with me last year don't respect me. i guess by this point in the year thats mostly my fault, so oh well. 2 more months till graduation...

First of all: Number is no excuse at all. We have 25 kids in our marching band and we still have a choice. Twenty. Five. Kids.
I'm a drum major for my second year (as a junior this year) and band council president, as well as band librarian. We only have band council, section leaders, and drum majors in our program because of our lack of people, and don't have the people to have field captains and stuff. We have a Section Leader for the high woodwinds (clarinets and flutes together) Sax (alto and tenor together), Trumpet, and then low brass. We also have a woodwind expert (Dalton) and a brass expert (Shane).
