Ellette froze mid-step as the tree she was walking under decided to suddenly drop a truckload of snow and slush. She stood there for a full minute, breathing deeply and counting backwards from one hundred but her brown eyes still flashed with irritation when she finally shook the mess off her mane, back and tail.

She shivered as she continued on, she needed to find someplace warm and safe to spend the night, This particular forest was no place for idle wandering, there were many dangers even in the best of conditions let alone in the dead of winter. She wouldn't have taken this path if she had had any other choice, despite that she has lost the path a few miles in and was now quite thoroughly lost. She glanced up at the thick screen created by the tough evergreens but it was no use. Even when she could manage to catch a glimpse at the sky she couldn't get her bearings as the majority of it was obscured by thick gray storm clouds.

It was a wonder she had managed to pass this far unmolested, she could only hope that the rest of her journey passed as uneventfully.

Aryon trudged through the forest wearily. He had been wandering around for most of the winter and was slowly getting better at avoiding the worst of the dangers. He even had a small cave he had made home.

It was this cave that he was heading towards and he knew he was getting close. His cave was really nothing more than a hole in a large hill. The entrance was well hidden by a very large snow drift that had the benefit of blocking most of the wind unless it was blowing in just the right way. The 'hill' itself was so large you almost didn't notice it until you came upon the edge of it which dropped about twelve feet down. ((think those fun little limestone caves by the vermillion falls. ^^))

As Aryon weaved his way around a tree that was prone to dumping snow from its boughs, he spotted another soquili in the distance and tried to step lighter so that 'crunch' noise his hooves made in the snow would be as quiet as possible.

Ellette's warm brown eyes narrowed to dangerous slits as her sensitive ears picked up the crunching of hooves and the faint hiss of breath. Within a matter of moments her entire demeanor changed, she shifted to a defensive stance, her ears laid back flat against her skull as she bared her teeth defiantly.

"Show yourself!" She demanded, slowly advancing towards the source of the noise. It would be dark soon, the evening descended early in the forest, better to deal with a threat now while she still had light to her advantage.

"This is your last chance, I warn you I am no easy meal, if you mean no harm, show yourself." Better any beast blunt its teeth on her, but she could still feel the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

Aryon grumbled to himself that he had been discovered so easily. He'd been trying his hardest to be stealthy but apparently it hadn't worked. He took a moment to observe the brown mare in front of him before complying to her demands. He noticed she seemed to know what she was doing in terms of defending herself and wondered if he would ever be as good as he could tell she was.

With a sigh, he reluctantly stepped into the open. "I'm not gonna eat you...I was just passing by looking for my resting place for the evening. It's getting dark you know."

Ellette gazed at him solemnly, sizing him up while surreptitiously listening for more hoof beats. The stallion seemed harmless enough bu it wouldn't do to be attacked from another direction if this was some sort of trick. What in the world was he doing in this forest if he couldn't even move through the underbrush without making a racket?

The thought made her smile and amusement sparkled in her warm brown eyes, softening her threatening demeanor.

"I certainly hope not, I doubt I would enjoy being eaten."

freezing wind hissed through the trees, making the branches above them whip around in a wild dance. A resounding crack sent a buzzing wave of fear through her body, she dove foreword, unceremoniously tackling the stallion out of the way as a tree trunk as thick as her torso crashed to the ground where they had been standing.

"Shelter, not a bad idea at all as there is going to be a rather severe winter storm shortly..." She murmured, casting a critical eye through the branches at the dark gray clouds boiling overhead. She cursed and pulled herself to her feet, "I don't suppose you have room for two?"

Aryon sat for a moment in the snow, having fallen when Ellette tackled him. His heart was pounding a mile a minute and he felt the beginnings of panic setting in.

"Wha...?" he mumbled in response to her question, not quite comprehending the situation.

A snow-flake drifted down during a sudden pause in the wind and landed in his eye. He blinked rapidly at the sudden cold and shook himself. Shelter. The other soquili had asked about shelter. He could do that. His cave was just a few hundred yards away.

"There's room for two or three actually...follow me." he got to his feet at last and started towards the cave. His pace was surprisingly sturdy for all that his heart was still pounding from his latest brush with death. Why had he ever come to this forest?

Ellette's mouth curled in a wry smile as she followed him, he was sweet but that wouldn't get him very far in a forest known to be home to kalonas and more than a few skinwalkers. The thought made her shiver, and not from the cold.

She pressed a hoof into the thick branch of an evergreen that had nearly crushed them and gripped one of the leafy green appendages with her teeth. A sharp pull and twist and she had a smaller, portable version which she dragged along with them, sweeping away their marks in the snow as they moved.

"Since it seems we are to be living together for a night-
-or two," she amended with a glance up at the storm blooming overhead, "What am I to call you?" her words were slightly slurred as she spoke through the branch held between her teeth.
"I am known as Ellette"

Aryon watched in fascination as Ellette brushed away their tracks. It had never occurred to him to do something like that. Perhaps that skinwalker a few days ago would have been easier to flee from if he had some of her knowledge...

"I'm Aryon, it's nice to meet you." he answered, coming up to the edge of the hill/ravine that contained his cave. He looked around for the path he used to get into the cave and found it next to a tree growing sideways off the side of the rocks.

"This way." he motioned with his head and lead the way.
